  • Many of the videos on TH-cam say the same points and don't talk about the driving itself. Here are my tips on driving in Australia (on the left side of the road) from my experience.
The driving footage is not mine, just something to watch while I talk

You are absolutly right , but dont forget if you cross the street as a pedestrian look first to your right side then left and right again. Very Important especially for Kids.

Just Went to Australia from CA, these tips were very useful, especially keeping right side as your reference, my lane drift indicator kept beeping.
Few things I had to mention - Speed limits, there are cameras everywhere and Road signs/friends there kept warning me to be under the limit.
Rear View Mirror - Not sure why, but I always thought the angle was wrong :)
Parking - Some of the parking spaces, I had to do reverse parking, by rule. So look for signs. Also, I found it odd while parallel parking in the other side of the road.
Rentals - Rented a car at the Airport from AVIS, was a breeze both taking it out and returning, no hassle. Drove with US license, took International license too, but they just checked by CA license at the counter.
Some of the roads are way to narrow.
Having said all, it is great to drive in Australia, people were very friendly - other drivers, at the gas stations etc.

Thank you for this. We went to Australia from NJ in 2018. My husband drove the car for a few days during our trip and luckily it was an area that didn’t have many roads or cars. But it was nerve wracking to us. I kept laughing when he kept flipping on wipers and I kept reminding- stay left, stay left when we were turning (though he probably didn’t need it). At one point we were pulling out of a restaurant and turning right and I suddenly panicked and screamed because I thought it was wrong (but he was correct!) 😂. Then there was another time he headed right out of a busy lot and nearly drove into traffic the wrong way. We both had a panic! 😂. We made it fine alive but it was exciting to say the least. 😂

All good driving tips for driving on opposite side of the road to what you are used to. I’ve driven in European countries for a few days and weeks on end on a Germany driving holiday. Truely the hardest time is the first 5-10 minutes when I mentally kept saying “It’s Wrong, It’s Wrong It’s Wrong” Plus it can be just as dangerous when you return to the other side for short period, not really when you return home as you slot straight back into your normal mode. It’s just after weeks of driving in Europe travelled to Ireland were I was driving on what is my normal side. Drove out on to a quite county road with something not feeling quite right and had to promptly thrown the car to the left side from the right side of the road, even though it was a local right hand drive car, I had just gotten used to driving on the opposite side and had NOT readjusted probably as I was in unfamiliar surrounds. Aussie here who has driven in the US several times. I find that if you think to keep you as the driver on the center line it helps with the lane drift problem. Like think in Australia my left foot has to be near the middle or center line of the road.
Defiantly look both ways when crossing a street, I got clipped by a car in the US but not injured luckily.
I have also driven European trucks like Volvo here in OZ where the wiper and blinker levers are backwards but get to know the vehicle so it's not a problem.

To save having to adjust to the wiper and indicator stalks being on opposite sides, spend a little more and hire a European or American car (eg VW, Volvo, Audi, BMW, MINI, Saab, Jeep, Dodge, Chrysler, etc), they are the same as American cars, just on the right hand side of the vehicle.

Australia does not have American cars apart from a very few wallowing ancient gin palaces driven by people with no taste. The turn signals on my 1983 Mercedes were where all other cars in Australia have them, on the right, but in a Mercedes van I drove they were on the left.

Got my license in the UK so I learned using this system but never owners or driven here since 2013. my real proper driving after that has always been in rentals in places where they drive like in the US. So basically now I’d be as confused as you in Australia and would automatically go the wrong way despite the fact that i still live in the UK and see this every day. Not sure how I’ll handle it

Thanks for the tips. A question: it appears that you hang to the right lane, as opposed to the leftmost lane. Is there a reason for that? Where I live, that would be seen as rude, as that would stop faster drivers from passing you. Is it just the Aussie way to drive?
(And I say this flipping "leftmost" for "rightmost" and "right" for "left." Hope it makes sense.)

If you think roundabout are great, which also do! Try the “lock-in” roundabouts in the Netherlands you have to decide where you want to come out before you enter, as you are locked into the exit point. Or their double roundabouts where cyclists 🚵‍♂️ are on the outside circle, car inside and you have to give way to cyclists ALWAYS! After all it’s the Netherlands and bikes are king always. i.e. Hit anyone on a bike and you in the wrong automatically.
My wife almost freaked out while driving on a larger Traffic island in the UK, as she never been on a roundabout with traffic lights on it. But later redeem herself by throwing the car to the opposite side of a country road at speed when a large dear cleared a 6’ft high stone dry wall and almost landed in the front of the car, that’s what comes from growing up in the Royal National Park, you learn to avoid dear.

  • @stephanburgess654

Are you aware that America like many countries in very early days of driving and horse carriage you drove or rode on the left side of the road. Driving on the right side was totally a mistake made by a large car manufacturer put the steering wheel on the wrong side of there car. Because this car was the largest exported car around the world money countries adopted this as the norm. Now you have left hand drive and right hand drive. All due a mistake by one American car company that still exists today. Just. Now less 7000 employees according to this weeks news.

    • @Goldenclaw112
      @Goldenclaw112 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

No. When wagons came along, people would travel on the right side of the road so they could see how much clearance they had on the left (they'd sit on the back left horse so they could whip the horses with their right hand). When we started paving our roads in the mid 1800's, we'd have drainage ditches on the sides of the road; since people wouldn't want to run their wagon into the ditch, they'd sit on the back right horse (so at this point we're traveling on the right while sitting on the right). Naturally automobiles copied this when they came out (the first car produced by Ford, the Model A, had its wheel on the right). By the time the Model T came out, it was more important to tell how close you were to oncoming traffic than to how close you were to the side of the road, therefore the wheel was positioned on the left.
The reason why some countries like the UK and Japan drive on the left is because of colonial times, when it was important to joust your weapon with your right hand.
So no, it's not because we made some mistake.

You needed to take your own advice in regards to using the right lane markings as a guide, the start of this video had you vereing off into the left lane....I thought that bus was going to hit you.
