Charlie is one of the most underrated guitarists much like Steve Rothery. Neither one of the show boats, shreds or have ridiculously fast fingers..... They weren't making noise for the sake of making noise.... They just made the Guitar sound incredible. In this, his Guitar sounds like it is sad, weeping......... emotional. Incredible.
j just saw simple minds on tv show for nelson mandela bir thday! let me say j'm happy cause j saw mel gaynor on drums! anyway it will be never enough my gratitude to simple minds for what their meaning in my life! thank you jim, thank u charlie!!
Just found this. It's one of my favorite Simple Minds songs ever! The video was giving me chills up and down my whole body. Jim Kerr is so so amazing! Thank you.
yes wot a performance , def the minds at there technical and artistic best, and at a period during which they changed the World, make no mistake about that , one of the most influential bands of our time
So glad to find this on here! I was right at the front with a flag and remember it like it was yesterday. This song, especially Charlies guitar solo still makes every hair on my body stand on end, just shear brilliance!
The way jim kerr comes on stage gives me goosebumps each time. The moment the song begins after he screams out mandela’s name is a f*cking powerful moment
Hey, I can say in my humble opinion that they got the recognition from the real music world. It’s a beautiful tribute from Jim and the band, I feel that Jim and Charlie will go on and on and this song especially shows they have a deep connection with life in general, remember they are From the the parts of the world that are hard as hell to get away from and they did it!! ❤ 🔊🔊🔊
Danke Peter Gabriel .- Eine Message, die immer, inmmer wieder Gültigkeit hat und die wir in die Welt tragen müssen. Peace, Love and Understanding . Wie schön wäre es !
I watched this live on tele when just a little boy...I still love the song. Safe Journey Home Mandela and thanks for the great examples you set for Humanity.
I was there that night. It was a more optimistic time. People were trying to make things better rather than give in to their worst instincts. I hope we can get better again.
Saw them live NYC Beacon theater early 80's and to this day I have yet to see another band that can move a crowd the way Jim and Band can!!!! The curtains opened and the energy that came from them was simply overwelming. I still think about it often.
RIP Mr Mandela, one of the greatest man all around the world go. My heart is sad. Mon coeur est triste aujourd'hui car l'humanité vient de perdre un de ses plus grands hommes.
@dbadz Thaks, for someone actually telling us when this was performed!. I have the 1988 one on C90 tape when it was simultaneously broadcast on TV and Radio 2 VHF, I was experimenting with a new stereo decoder that very day. Also Tracy Chapman and others, Dire Straits?. Wonder how much my quality tape has faded... I remember that day and the whole concert so well.

I couldn't agree more. My top two favorite guitarists! Both evoke such deep, passionate emotion without being showy or overbearing!
Somebody bring back the eighties, things were much more simple and full of quality!!!
Thank you Simple Minds, Regards from Greece
