Hey Gabriel. I have been training for almost 2 years now. I really want to be a pro and make a living of it because it feels like I dont want to do anything else. Im 23 years old now and I always think about how much time there is left for me to sereously reach that goal. Maybe you could do a Video on this? Also if anyone else reads this feel free to awnser:)

Gabriel thank you for this video! It's exactly what I was doing before... long training sessions, not sleeping well and as soon as I was getting back home for training I started watching fights until bedtime. With age you become 'wiser' so now at 44 I think I found some balance between work, training and having fun. 🙏

Training and watching fights over and over and over is a really good point. I burnt out hard before after many years of doing that. Just stopped watching fights for a while.
I’m back to watching ONE and RWS, but that mental burnout is for real bro. Another great point 🙏🏼

I do Muay Thai maybe 2-3 times at best a week and have definitely found the rest days necessary. Even spending time with the wife to watch Netflix to get my mind away from it helps with mental rest

1.Bought me a throwing dummy (never had a good takedown)suplemented a day a week of just throws and takedowns and it drastically improved
2.love to watch fights from other times and places also gym training footage
    3. electrolytes, you wouldn't believe how many folks get sad/lathargic from just low internal minerals, coconut water is a good option

I would highly recommend watching Dr. Andrew Huberman`s videos on dopamine reward scheduling and dopamine mindset and drive. Its a very dynamic double edged sword system that we all have. I cannot possibly summaraize it all in a single post but he lays out protocols that can definitely help you to not burn out on things you enjoy.

I came to some similar conclusions about training hours for Muay Thai, I typically do 2 days of two hour sessions and then 1-2 days of one hour sessions. I found that in addition to the problems you listed overtraining often leaves you vulnerable to injuries both from drills/sparring and overuse.

Hey Gabe, could you address what you think of “Gym bullies”? I just recently went to another gym to spar and their top guy (only pro) just beats up on everyone and he tried to do the same to me. I ended up surprising him and humbling him in front of his whole gym and they were basically coming up to me and thanking me after class for teaching him a lesson. I can’t stand guys like that

Another great video. Lately I've been feeling burn out at the gym; however, it's mainly due to the fact that where I train if mainly focused on the competitive team and is very "cliquish". May be a video on training at gym where you don't fit in would be helpful. Unfortunately in my case it's the only gym that's within a reasonable distance from where I live.

    • @kvarga9164
      @kvarga9164 ปีที่แล้ว +6

A cliquey gym is not your failing in any way. It is really unfortunate that some martial arts/kickboxing/boxing/
ground fighting clubs have cliques in them and/or can be cliquey.
I have seen that before and it is just all kinds of wrong. To allow it to happen or not know it exists in your club as an owner/instructor is a sad thing and it shows the lack of effort or belief in the reason of being a true martial artist.
As we get higher skilled - tougher - a better fighter we should also be more polite, more helpful, a nicer person.
People who train and then become bullies, rude, aggressive - beat people up whether that is in the gym or the street have not learned a darn thing.
They are truly not stellar human beings in any regard.
Too bad you are experiencing that.
If you are one of those types of people at any gym - CHANGE!!!!!!!
There are always people out there that are better, tougher, faster and can be mean as hell if forced and one day you will experience a serious beat down - so don't be a dick!
      Just my opinion
      Gabriel's dad- Keith

I help teach kids classes at the place I train at. Sometimes they try to get me to the sparing or doung the drills along with them because there isn't enough students. I stopped doing that because then I would be to tired for my class that is right after. Also doesn't make sense since I can't how the other students are doing. I get a lot less burn out and injuries because of it then those who have to doing things the whole time. Lucky I am good at breaking down instructions

Great idea for a vid to whoever suggested it. Burnout isn't just a problem for high level pros training full time six times a week. It can happen to recreational martial artists who have work, school and family commitments by day and then beating their bodies down at night at the gym even if it's only a few times a week. It's a lot to ask out of your body and your mind to balance all those stressors.
And then there's the guilt if you take extended time off but, really, you lose very little knowledge or skill with a little time off and can come back even better with a healed up body, clarity of the mind and new motivation.

Thank you so much for doing this topic. No one really talks about this, but sometimes we just have to go through the motions when we train. Motivation isn’t always there when we grind, and I think that’s the reason why most people quit martial arts. The grind is real. Sometimes it’s a struggle to keep going, and we need to take breaks. The important thing is that we keep coming back to the mat! Great Video!

I recently stopped fighting for not having motivations and no fun at all to train. And I was training for fighting. Not for fun.
If I wanted to just fight in promotions, no problem... but when I got ass-beat 9 months ago against someone who was training for fight... clock was ticking.
When I want to pass times resting or playing hockey ball at evening instead of training in boxing or MMA...
One last shot for debut March, one last small training camp to february to the fight, victory, farewell.

I started watching YT channels like this to find motivation.
Usually when my mood is lacking, I watch Anatoly making pranks in the gym. Then walk to the outdoor gym with a smile.

I am a perfectionist in a very bad way. I have been doing muay thai/ kick boxing for only 6 months and I work extremely hard, in early, out late, everyday I do stuff to improve. I know I am progressing but I am so impatient with myself, and I am so angry at my level. It makes it hard to enjoy what I am passionate about. I am sure others here suffer similar feelings.

I feel like being economical with the things that you would want to work on helps a lot. Writing down 3 or 4 objectives and spreading them across the week would help you with time management. Then as you get to the level that you desire, you can change the main objectives after at least 4 weeks while tapering the prior objectives. The more varied your objectives the more chaotic your training and adaptations get, which can make it fun, but quite tiring, depending on how busy your day to day goes. But if you can pull that off, it may help to gain more adaptations the more advanced you get, with respect to your individuality, genetics and motivation. Some people work better with less objectives, while others more, so see what works for you. You know that you aren't progressing if you plateau especially after 4 to 6 weeks on average. Then it would be good to narrow down your objectives. Or taper and rest. Rinse and repeat. Like me I'm currently sort of cycling the same 4-6 exercises on a weekly basis. And seeing some gains. God knows when I'll compete again. But I love training to death.

You need to keep your fist closed and tight at impact and also you need to use the correct technique and your problem will go away. Also some exercises will get you strong "hinges". Look at how Dimitri Bivol does push-ups.

Think I'm burned out. I train in the morning hurt or not and I'm fine with it, that is cross training with calisthenics or kickboxing at the house but when it comes to the gym (TKD) I just don't want to go. Especially at the gym because I usually volunteer 3 hours teaching than I train.
