It’s literally impossible for our brain to do multitasking with two high-attention demanding tasks. If you need your phone for emergencies, then keep it in your pockets, out of sight.
Well that's no good, because if there's an emergency how are you going to call/text your parents? Kids need their cellphones, they just need to learn not to get distracted and not use it when its unnecessary.
As someone with pretty severe anxiety, I think a lot of Tiktok users just…expect people to be okay with their destructive and unhealthy coping mechanisms? Like vandalizing someone else’s property is not a good coping mechanism, and people shouldn’t have to bend over backwards and let you RUIN THEIR STUFF because it makes you feel better. Literally just use paper.

As a person who has been diagnosed with clinical anxiety, can people please not act like public vandalism is an anxiety coping mechanism. You can literally just doodle on your notebook which is what I did when I got stressed out in school.

Public vandalism is more likely a symptom of some sort of attention seeking disorder, not anxiety. Literally everyone here with anxiety, including myself, is mentioning we used notebooks to deal with anxiety.
@@Nakia11798 Though, not everyone with anxiety can access a small notebook. Some families may not have the money to buy extra notebooks for their child's anxiety. This is just an opinion though, don't take this to heart. Just a statement and i fully do not agree with drawing on the desk.

6:30 teachers are absolutely allowed to ask if a student is having a medical issue that’s keeping them out of class for extended periods. A teacher is NOT allowed to discriminate against someone for having a medical issue, and they’re NOT allowed to FORCE a student to tell them. But if you do have a health problem that’s keeping you from class, even just saying “I’m having a medical problem, I can try to bring a doctor’s note” is enough

I have Crohn’s and I always made sure to bring that up to my teachers PRIVATELY after class or during a quiet time outside the classroom just a small one on one chat bc I had to be close to the door incase I had to all of a sudden use the restroom and I did always try to ask my teachers if I had to go I did have one teacher tho that made me feel really bad for asking and it was a theater teacher and when I asked him all he responded with was “is it an emergency” and I always felt guilted into saying no because I didn’t wanna draw attention to myself or make my teachers start asking questions that I didnt wanna answer in front of the entire class
I wouldn't even consider that a hugely invasive question, like she does. If there's something going on that means the kid CAN and HAS TO stay out of class for a third of the time, then that should've been disclosed beforehand and is almost grounds for a different kind of education or extra lessons/work.
It's also a lot nicer to go "hey, kid" instead of "I've contacted your parents immediately, without even saying anything to you".
Not like the teacher needs to know your exact medication and address of your doctor's office. It'd just be nice to know if you're in danger of collapsing/allergic/in excruciating pain in certain scenarios so those can be adjusted. Like asking if someone has a nut allergy after avoiding cookies, so you can bring some without nuts the next time and the kid feels included.
They don’t have the right to make a student tell them their PRIVATE medical history.
The school should have a policy as to how many bathroom breaks each student is allowed per class. If the student goes over that number the office will be notified and a parent/guardian will be contacted for a doctor's note or some such thing.
it makes sense, you have to have a reason to be out of the class. The teacher is responsible for their students, if anything happens during class and someone gets hurt, it's their fault. If the student is not in the classroom, the teacher can't keep an eye on them but will still be held responsible if anything happens. Besides, many students are literally being disrespectful and smug and use toilet breaks for just skipping class so it's totally understandable if the teacher gets suspicious about someone's behaviour if they leave the class often but as said, a simple chat after class is enough if you have a condition or other reason - just let the teacher know, be fair to them so they can be fair to you.
uni on the other hand😂 at least in my country, they never care. If you skip too much class and don't pass it's your fault, they're gonna get money if you need to retake a course. And everyone is at least 19 at that point so they're not responsible for you anymore. You can even bring a laptop and play games, it's your call if you want to waste your time, money and opportunities
The fact that people are STILL shitting on this teacher makes me far too angry. I had a horrific school experience and she, from what she presents, is so incredibly understanding and reasonable. The fact that this woman who obviously cares and treats her students with respect is getting hate like this (and still is to this day) is absurd.
1. Drawing on the desks: It's pretty obvious that Chadchad was homeschooled and never saw a desk typically used in public schools, because they don't just get drawn on. The materials those desks are made out of get DESTROYED when people "draw" on them. Pencil carves in and permanent marker doesn't come off no matter what you use. I was a doodler, like a lot. And if drawing helps you listen, USE PAPER. There is no reason not to. It isn't about keeping the room "clean" it's about literally defacing school property when schools are already underfunded as it is. They can't just get new desks.
2. Taking way too long on bathroom breaks: Kids don't just blip from the classroom to the bathroom. A lot of times, bathrooms are quite a walk away from the class you're in. When a kid is taking 15 minutes on a bathroom break EVERY DAY, they're pretty obviously fucking around. And, most classrooms have bathroom passes, only one kid gets to go at a time. So, while Timmy is using that time to say hi to his friends in the hall and get some chips, you're sitting there, nearly pissing your pants, waiting for him to come back. Even though the school would be informed if the kid had something like IBS or some other condition, she STILL was nice enough to ask in private if there was some sort of personal, medical issue that would explain this.
3. The phone thing: I personally hate when teachers take phones away from students. This is the ONLY instance that I've not just been totally fine with it, but agreed with her. If she asked MULTIPLE times for this kid to put away their phone and they didn't, that's totally understandable. She isn't taking it away for any other time than the duration of the class. It isn't like those shitty teachers that try to take away personal property for a semester or something. She even said you would get it back walking out the door. She asked nicely numerous times, and then just made sure it wasn't going to be an issue or distraction for the rest of class. On top of that, her policies on phone time and brakes is beyond cool.
Fuck you guys for treating a reasonable, gem of a teacher like this. I had a teacher say directly to my face "You won't amount to anything", verbatim. I can count on one hand the amount of teachers who actually gave a fuck about me and treated me like a teacher should, not insulting me or making an obviously troubled kid's life harder. So people who have teachers like this should be thanking their lucky stars.

My school desks were not just drawn on, people would take whatever sharp object they got their grubby hands on and carve into them. Those things were a mess, I'm surprised we could use them.
Kids also deface the chairs in my school and they were ripping off the soap dispensers. The kids at my school are shitty...
I was looking for this comment! I don’t mean no hate but in this video it’s very clear that Chadchad has been homeschooled and hasn’t been to a normal school. This teacher is far better and more reasonable than any teacher I’ve ever had, she always asks nicely first, and even after the student doesn’t comply she won’t resort to yelling of other form of harsh punishment, she just does what’s absolutely necessary and does her best to not intervene with the students comfort too much.

yeah, if youre sitting in class and briefly check your phone to see if someone has texted you, you arent getting your phone taken away. If you knew beforehand youd need to be on your phone for important reasons, then wouldnt the teacher have known that already? or wouldnt you have explained it to her the first time she asked? I have no idea why everyone is so upset at her, she seems perfectly reasonable to me
There was one comment I saw that had a lot of replys, most of them were high schoolers telling adults that there are reasons to be on their phone while some of the adults were saying that you shouldn't need your phone at all for no reason whatsoever, I am pretty sure it is the top comment right now you can check it out
Yeah if you just tell most teachers (most not all) they’ll be understanding about stuff. I’ve even had a teacher who would let people leave class to answer phone calls as long as it was something important (most common thing was work)

For the medical conditions: teachers actually HAVE to know so they know how to respond in case of emergency. They could legally be held liable if they don’t respond properly because those kids are in their care. Normally the student would have paperwork about it though.
Also if some emergency were to occur the teacher would need to know where the student is as they're legally responsible for their students
Teachers really can't catch a break. They get criticized by parents, their students, the school board, the state, and the principals. It's an extremely underpaid and understaffed field because of the stress and pressure you're constantly under. I understand why they have high expectations placed on them, but it feels like every time teachers post anything online, they get critiqued for dumb reasons.
Bottomline: The backlash is just because Tiktok is a platform full of kids around her students' age range. And they hate school, at least for the time being, so they take out their frustration on her.
Honestly, teaching is such a thankless job. I work in a movie theater and 95% of the time the worst customers are either parents or teenagers. Teachers have to deal with both and for an entire year instead of just a few minutes per person.
@@thingthang2904 teachers are basically the professional version of a babysitter. i was kind of a troublesome student back then but when i got caught, i am not spewing out some kind of illness to justify what i'm doing. i would take the punishment and be tough about it. nowadays, kids are competing on who's more softer. it's embarrassing.

The fact that in the "sus", bathroom break one, all she said was "hey, if you're getting snacks, just let me know." She didn't even say you couldn't have snacks. She just said she wanted to know, because it's HER responsibility if you're out of the classroom during the class period. Like why are people so offended? But to OP, yeah, a lot of kids don't realize that wandering the halls is a safety issue, but the vast majority will listen based on authority alone and even more will when you give students the respect of explaining policy. High schoolers are almost legal adults. If we want them to be ready for that, we have to start treating them like that
The reason why you needa ask to go to the bathroom is because the teachers needa know where you are at all times, just in case of an emergency.
This phone in classroom debate feels so weird to me, in my school (Germany, graduated in 2020) we weren‘t even allowed to look at our phones in breaks between classes or even on the campus at all. If a teacher had caught you, some might even had it taken away from you for the whole day
They would take ours for days when I was in school if they even caught you looking at them over lunch. Granted that was the dark ages and some administrators were actually just stealing phones. So parental backlash killed that a few years after I left.

we couldn't have them anywhere at school. if we were caught with a phone (not using it, just having it) they would take it and give it back AT THE END OF THE WEEK unless a parent came in to take it back. only in higher grades would it be taken for just a day.

Yeah I agree, she was being super nice about it. I once drew a small line on my chair during class with a pencil and the teacher yelled loudly at me in front of the entire class and made me go up to the front of the class to get a wipe and a spray bottle. Then she said if it doesn't come off then I will get detention. I was a grade 6 lmao
In where i live, we have real problems. If u were to get in a fight in class... the teacher would just watch and tell us to continue. Who losses, the teacher would tell the principle u threw the first punch .....ayyy
Calling the school officer is definitely needed with some students. I guess you haven’t gone to a predominately underprivileged school, but those kids have huge problems with respect and authority figures and they always choose to pick a fight with a well meaning teacher, cause a huge scene and there’s nothing the teacher can do but call an officer to get that student out of class so the rest of the students can have a stress-free learning environment. I’ve witnessed this happen so many times and it’s so stressful every time. I hated those students because in my mind they always acted up for no reason. I know better now but no matter what demons they were fighting, at the end of the day they are still being extremely disruptive if the teacher has to call them out multiple times.

@@ginamoten2285 no, as someone who goes to majority of hose schools, and jump around a lot. No. That only makes things worse, UNLESS the student was being violent before or during the take of the phone, not if they’ve done absolutely nothing but check something on their phone. Taking away phones does nothing but entice children to go against the rule and lash out. From experience, I’ve been to both types, schools that don’t heavily enforce the rule the students do their work and there’s less lash outs, and those that enforce more usually have students that lash out at teachers (which only makes things worse) and care less for the rules
She’s a completely reasonable teacher from what I’ve seen. Not wanting snacks in the classroom is usually about making things easier on the janitors. The desk thing is because the schools usually don’t have the funds to buy new desks if a student damages the desks.
Also, yes, teachers are supposed to know about your medical conditions. You can’t take any meds in school unless you have a doctors note. Teachers also need to keep an eye out for any signs of a student having a medical issue while in class. Mental health conditions often require special counseling and scheduling through what’s known as 504’s and IEP’s. Students with medical conditions often require specialized workarounds for certain school rules.
Also, if anything happens to a child when they’re supposed to be in class the teacher can be held responsible by default unless they have proof that the child wasn’t under their care at the time (hence why teachers seem so concerned about attendance). Since kids, while at school, are expected to fall under the responsibility of the teachers literally anything negative can have severe consequences for the teacher.
The laws and procedures that public school teachers are expected to function under are designed to be strict because, when they aren’t strict, kids have gotten hurt.

As a European all I saw was a teacher being a teacher. How was anything she did and said disrespectful? If anything, she seemed pretty lax on most things. Kids these days are just so spoiled and think they can do whatever, whenever to whomever just by throwing ✨anxiety✨ or whatever other excuse to the teachers face. They are taught no respect and no accountability. I have anxiety and learned to overcome it in school settings. It got a bit worse in university but because I knew how to overcome it at a younger age I did just that. This teacher is so nice and understanding and puts up with wayyy more than my teachers used to I don't understand where all this drama is coming from since she is just doing her job.
Im sorry but not every "kid these days" thinks he can do whatever whenever to whomever by throwing anxiety "or whatever excuse"(as if anxiety was just an excuse for anything) to the teachers face. Some kids are spoiled ,some are not. Some are taught respect and others are not. Some kids do have anxiety and sometimes are met with incredulity or their anxiety isnt taken in consideration seriously because of an underlying idea that anxiety is not a real thing or just an excuse. Also just because you have learned to deal with your anxiety does nt mean that everyone else can do the same or that what you call anxiety is what others experience with their own anxiety. You dont know how it is for them ,maybe their anxiety is a lot harder to overcome maybe they dont have the same skills or opportunities as you had. Also just because your experience with teacher sucked back in the day, does nt set the limit on how much thing should suck for others in the future,we can still make changes in our ways for the better. Lots of things have changed in the way we treat people and do things since the time of my parents and of their parents even more and I dont think were done .All changes that made it better for the next generation but ,all the while my grand parents were telling my parents as Im sure their parents were telling them :"kids these days are like this and like that they are spoiled ,back in my time we couldnt do this or that and were treated like crap" , my parents had the same dialogue with me ,now some of my friends have started saying the same things to their own kids. Dont look down on every kid and assume bad things about them when you really dont know .I get that its an easy(still false tho) opinion to have ,and almost a tradition I suppose but it really is not helpfull in any way ,has no reason to be except for you to express some sort of frustration or whatnot which you could express in a variety of different other ways than this without the negative aspects like putting everyone in the same bag (thats not fair),without invalidating those who suffer from real anxiety problems etc.. Im sure you can remember kids from when you were a kid that were spoiled and some that had no respect and werent taught anything at home and some teachers who were hardcore strict af and some way more nice. As for her ,I agree that she seems like a very nice teacher and I dont get the drama either except for the bathroom stuff which I dont think it comes from her like Its not out of her own personal interest to ask what kids do in the bathroom or to have all children ask for her permission every time they want to go but more of a school problem in general even thought shes the one who has to enforce it in some way.
@kentspeak465 Well, I'm in my 20s it's not like I was in school 30 years ago or something. But it's so funny to me that just because I said that my teachers taught me respect and accountability and weren't as lax as teachers are today, you automatically assumed that my teachers "sucked" and that I had a bad experience with them. They didn't and I liked my teachers. I still keep in touch with some of them. Now that I'm older and see how entitled kids are today, I'm even more grateful for everything they taught me. I'm not saying kids are entirely to blame. The parents are responsible too. They shouldn't just be blaming the teachers. My sister is a teacher and children, and their bad behaviours are only reinforced by the parent when they refuse to "help" the teacher by siding with them instead of their child. Of course, they should side with their child but not always, only *when their child is right.*
As for anxiety and whatever other issue one might have, they have to learn to deal with it. It is your issue to deal with, not society's. People are not obligated to walk on eggshells around you just because you have a problem. It's your responsibility to deal with and you can't use it as an excuse to get away from things you have done wrong. Continously, avoiding accountability leaves no room for you to grow amd learn from your mistakes.
I never said that what worked for me would work for everyone. But people should stop blaming everything on their issues and learn to deal with them on their own and not expect the entire population to conform to them and their issues. We need to learn to take accountability for our actions and not always defer to something or someone else.
Lastly, of course there were spoiled kids in my class when I was in school. But the minute they caused trouble and the teacher informed their parents and they stopped. Because their parents sided with the teacher and took measures against such behaviour. I'm not talking about corporal punishment. That's awful, but they took away the kids' electronics, grounded them, talked to them about what is and isn't acceptable, etc. There was one mum that sided with the child who was clearly in the wrong and the entire class let the child know that what she had done, bringing her mum to school to yell at the teacher because she had rightfully taken away her phone, was disgusting and a childish move. Guess what? She never got her phone out and never caused a problem in class either. Nowadays, she'd be celebrated for bringing her mum over to berate the teacher. I say this with confidence because my sister and a lot of my friends have become teachers in different schools, towns, cities and even countries and their complaints are always the same. But I will agree that it's not entirely the children's fault. Parents are to blame, too.

The main problem that I see personally is that I have panic attacks at least once a day and sometimes several times a day. This leads me to use certain apps on my phone to help me regulate my emotions and get back to a state where I can actually do the work. If a teacher took away my phone while I was using it for coping and regulation, I would probably relapse into self destructive coping mechanisms like self harm and disordered eating. And if this is a problem I deal with regularly, I’m sure other students are as well.

I taught one year in HS, and it's a rough job as many kids don't seem to have a sense of what is respectful. At the same time, I think it's a sign we need to do school differently. Traditional schooling isn't working well anymore, and I feel for the teachers that are doing their best in that model.
"Traditional schooling" Theres nothing traditional about todays schooling, its 90% kids on laptops playing games and ignoring the teacher, tests are open books or also done on laptops, bullying is worse then ever before, no one learns anything, im having a kid soon and its 100% going to be home schooled, I just need to find a way for them to still build social skills.
It doesn't help districts and state standards are completely out of touch, and don't want to change things they're comfortable doing. My partner is a teacher, they want to make so many progressive, evidence based changes and they're just...not allowed.
If this teacher is “hated”, then students today are basically animals, and I am 100% grateful I changed my mind about being a high school science teacher. Apparently kids can’t even manage the minimum when it comes to functioning in society. They are in for a rude awakening when it comes to entering the job market. If they’re caught defacing company equipment by drawing on it, there won’t be any gentle warning. They’ll straight up be fired.

Kids literally talk about r4ping girls in front of my teachers and they don't do anything, kids fight every day, they swear at teachers don't pay attention, and I understand it might just be my school but I've heard from teachers kids weren't like this years prior their just getting worse. @@plaguedocter4791 It's not that your teachers "don't" do anything. They legally cannot do anything, or they can be sued or fired for disciplining bad behaviour. It sounds crazy, but I'm a teacher and I personally know other teachers where this has happened. One female teacher was fired for breaking up a fight (one boy was repeatedly kicking another boy's head), one male teacher who was sued for confiscating a boy's hat because the boy was throwing it around the room, and another female teacher was sued for asking a girl to be quiet during an exam! I've personally experienced students, during an exam, sit on their desks, refuse to do the test and told all the teachers, deputies and finally the principal to "f-off". Their parents eventually got called into the school and the kids told them to "f-off", too. Then the school was not allowed to suspend any of these students because it would be "bad for their emotional and mental health to remove them from educational opportunities". It's not so much the kids, though, as it is schools and teachers not being allowed to discipline students. Parents are also no longer allowed to properly discipline children. And with social media and food culture rotting kids bodies and brains, things are just going to get worse.
Ive seen a lot of teachers on TikTok talking about how kids are significantly decreasing in a lot of areas in school. It’s so sad to see. :/

From a teacher’s perspective: we are legally required to know where our students are (this is especially important in cases of emergency). At our school site, students have been vandalizing the bathrooms, so that’s another thing for teachers to monitor. I have had a few students just walk into other teacher’s classrooms to interrupt/visit their friends. Honestly, I don’t think anything she said on her Tiktoks were bad. I think it’s missing the key element of rapport that teachers build with students.
Phone policies, desk drawing, bathroom rules are all things that teachers have to enforce from the school site/district; it’s like being upset at a cashier when they tell you to put a mask on? Of all the things teachers could be put on blast for (racism, sexism, ableism, etc.), I don’t think this teacher in particular deserves it.

I agree, as a high school student, I've noticed that alot of my peers don't like teachers solely on the fact that the teacher enforces rules. Like my graphic design and photography teachers have a great system for bathroom breaks. Its a simple check in and out system but its effective. Its really helpful for someone like me with social anxiety. But others in my class hate those teachers because they have a chart and don't just let them walk out without any notice. People also don't like them cus they don't allow us to play games on the computers!?! I don't get it. Teachers are just enforcing nessesary rules in a classroom, the kids in my high-school have no respect.

This teacher gives her students PHONE BREAKS, that's EXTREMELY GENEROUS. Kids do need to learn how to read the situation and know when is a good time to be on their phone and when isn't, that's just part of being responsible and well adjusted.

I was a student in a french highschool and we were not even allowed to use out phones during the whole day, not during breaks except in a special designated place, but for middle schoolers no phones during the entire 8h hours of school, which to me sounds normal, you are in a study and socializing environment, you can read, study, talk with your friends but phones are for when you’re at home

Never doodled on desks, but definitely on my school papers. It got to the point where all my teachers told me to stop doing that and I started to fail my classes. I had one teacher that would let me draw and I had the highest grade in the class bc of that.

I think her teaching is great because the high school I go to we can’t even have our phones and we have an 1 hour classes so hers being 45 minutes and sometimes having phone breaks omg that’s amazing. Two years too late late to this video, but when I was working at a high school as an instructional assistant, a student pulled his phone out during an exam and when the teacher walked over to the student, he took his phone and placed it in the phone dungeon and said he could have it back at the end of class, the young man went absolutely insane. He started yelling and cussing and screaming and flung the desk across the room before storming out. Everyone was so traumatized ... I don't work there anymore. I definitely learned that day teaching was not the career path I wanted to pursue.

i have anxiety and i usually just rip off a paper from a notebook and doodle on there. the only times i draw on the table is when i don’t have paper available and even then, i do it really lightly so it erases easily :p

"respect" does not mean treating someone as more worthy than you, it means acknowledging they are a person with responsibilities and not making it harder for them when they are trying to teach you. of course that doesnt apply to all teachers, theres a lot of horrible ones, but this one seems like a good one and she only asked for the phone the THIRD time she saw this person use it.

The fact the phone one was the one most people got mad about is absolutely crazy. That's literally such a kind policy. My 9th grader computer engineering teacher would warn you once, and if she caught you twice, would take it away for the rest of the day (day, not period). Either way, what do you need your phone for so bad that you take out your phone even after being warned twice, you're in a school.

i have generalized anxiety disorder, and it was more of a nervous tick of mine to /erase/ or /clean/ desks as opposed to drawing on them. plus whatever you draw will disappear on a desk, at least on paper you can take it with you and admire it later??

as someone who goes to school in austria, its normal to give your phone when school starts. its LITERALLY in the school rules! that you need to give your phone to the teacher, who then puts it in a desk and then in a cabinet which then gets locked with a key so the kids cant take it in the 5-min breaks. also if a teacher(at least in my school idk if its the same in others) catches you with your phone/that you have your ohone on you, they, if it happens for the first time, tell you to put your phone next to the others, if it happens for the second time, they take your phone with them for the rest of the day, and if you geth caught three times, your phone will end up at the principal office and your parents/Guardian has to pick it up. and seeing ppl get so worked up over something thats so normal for me makes me realize how intitle some ppl online think they are. and i watched this vid 100s of time and i never can understand how this teacher can get sooo much hate. like she is probably one of the chillest teacher i seen in a while online. like other teachers wont even let youe DRINK WATER and she is over here letting her students eat, be on their phones when the lesson is very long, AND isnt like one of those teachers who doesnt allow you to go to the bathroom and blames you for it. and there are many of those teacher in my school.

i had a math teacher once that was so neglectful. i figured out that if i erased the title of my homework from the night before and just put the current assignment as the title, he wouldn't even notice that the answers i wrote didn't fit the assignment at all. at least this teacher clearly cares about an effective learning environment. limiting distractions helps both the teacher and the students. she's really just trying to make sure everyone does their job well.

My senior year of high school they finally allowed us the use of our phones so pretty much after I finished my school work or was in a study hall I was on my phone or school issued laptop

Yeah the only time I was allowed my phone in school is if you were doing a class-based activity (like in French we were looking up French current-affairs articles and translating them.) or on the last day where we were just playing Kahoot and stuff.

I’m in high school and there are no punishments for having phones out. It’s frowned upon to use them in class, but the teachers don’t call you out or confiscate your phone if they see it out. A lot of my classmates use them frequently. There’s kind of a “mind your own business” mentality and if you aren’t paying attention and subsequently your grades suffer, that’s completely on you.
Where I live, there is literally a nation-wide phone ban for public schools. We originally got told we weren’t allowed to bring them to school at all, but so many parents complained about not being able to check if their child was ok before and after school that they eased it slightly. We’re not allowed them during the school day, but we can put them in our lockers before school starts and keep them there until afterwards. Unless you have an exception written by a doctor or psychologist or approved by the principal, that’s the rules for everybody. Although no one ever listens to it. If we get caught with phones, they get sent to the office for the rest of the day and we have to collect them afterwards. But usually we don’t use them in class, we just leave them in our laptop bags and use them as hotspots cause the school’s wifi not only limits us from googling certain things (sometimes even websites like Wikipedia), but is so bad and slow that it’s impossible to get work done

As a Dutch student I’m not even allowed to bring my phone into the building, if I wanted to use my phone I’d have to go off of the school grounds
as a teacher, yes we are supposed to be made aware of medical issues that require the student to be able to go the restroom without restrictions because you have to be aware of where the students assigned to you are and you have to let those students to just go without asking if its something medical.
The issue is that many school districts are absolutely shit at proper accommodations and the school board is responsible/ gets to say what they will or will not recognize and approve. So there could be students with medical issues that are legitimate but aren't on their file due to the board refusing to add it.
I went through school without any accommodations (due to a shit mother), and luckily my teachers were understanding. However, I have seen countless cases of school boards treating disabled students horribly and refusing really basic accommodations without a legitimate reason. All because the disability wasn't one that was visible or one of the "real" ones the public thinks of when you say disabled. (think being blind, paralyzed, downs syndrome, seizures, and other more prominent disabilities)

She just seems like a normal, caring teacher. She’s not insanely strict she just wants her material to be the focus and it honestly sucks to see tiktok comments ragging on her when she’s not doing anything wrong lol
The problem is that tiktok is full of kids who don't like school, and since they wouldn't ever talk to their actual teachers like this _in person_ they leave anonymous comments on the internet.
Except that one unfortunately phrased "blatant disrespect against me, your teacher" everything I've seen looks about right, even nice. There are lots of teachers who wouldn't ask once to put your phone away, they'd actually demand it and you wouldn't want to get on their bad side.
As a teacher, I can tell you that there is NOTHING you can do to force a student to pay attention to your subject. If the students are showing a total disinterest that speaks more of YOUR teaching style. If even after doing your best to make the class interactive the students aren't paying attention, there's NOTHING you can do. Take away the phone? They'll doodle. Tell them to stop doodling? They'll play with their pencils. Tell them to stop doing that? They'll at this point be so agravated by the constant telling them what not to do that they won't be able to concentrate at all, especially teens who haven't got the emotion-regulation thing down yet. A much better tactic is to understand that everyone has their off-day, and if they can't pay attention that day, hopefully they can use your hour of class to reset, calm down, self soothe, so they can at least pay attention to the lesson after yours. Surely they can ready up on what they missed later. This will make students respect you and like you more for being understanding towards them and their insane workload that CAN cause burn-out, and also allows the OTHER students who ARE paying attention to have an uninterrupted lesson.
It's usually the nice teachers that get called nasty things and get hate in my experience as a former high school student.

I truly don't like how one sided your statement feels. teens are always gonna be emotional and crap, so what? other teens listen. other teens were raised with respect or innately listen and see the value of not using their phones even if they can't pay attention. an effort needs to be made. and not every teacher has teh energy to baby and do make up works or remedies for a student not trying. like teachers have a workload as well, and they are also adults with outside lives. they often have bills to pay and adult responsibilities unlike students, and they need to constantly find workarounds and alternatives? no. for the few amazing teachers I had that went out of their way to do those things, I appreciate them. because I know it wasn't each investing so much effort in something that doesn't always work out. thankfully, I always utilised their opportunities so I didn't waste their efforts.

@@NorthernGreenEyes idk how it is in ohio but i live in texas and there’s a big homeschooling community in my hometown and a lot of the parents ran in similar circles and would take turns teaching different subjects so maybe you could look into a group that’s maybe doing that? the education system here is really subpar and i honestly wish i was homeschooled
@@NorthernGreenEyes hmm, are they? I mean I grew up homeschooled in Ohio, and I dont remember there being a super scary amount of regulations. But maybe things have changed. I will say though that there are some large homeschooling communities in Ohio, depending on where you live.
@@kaleighm993 also homeschooled in Texas and can attest to this. There are a lot of co-ops and homeschool groups where people collaborate. There's also a program called k-12 where homeschooled kids essentially do school online. I knew a few people who did this at least part time.
I think having phones in class seem soooo weird. At my school every student have to turn in their phone at the beginning of the day and they keep a list of who turns it in and who doesn’t. A lot of people still don’t do it and use their phones obviously but the beach’s of the phone ban they hide it from teachers. I honestly think it’s great because you can focus more but also cus it kinda forces you to do something, especially during breaks. If I had my phone I’d probably spend all day on it but now I’ll play cards or stuff with my friends which is way more fun
As a teacher-student and substitute teacher in Sweden we have a no phone rule in the classroom (with a dedicated bin) they hand in the phones at the beginning of class and get them back at the end. If I catch anyone with a phone I get the bin and let them put it in themselves since it is their property. The only exception is if a student have to take a call and I just remind them kindly to keep the phone away while waiting for the call. Never had an issue…
The restroom brakes: I remind everyone that if they are leaving for the restrooms/ getting a snack/ refilling their water bottles give me a heads up and return as soon as possible. Sometimes I catch maybe 1-2 student slacking or playing table tennis which gives them 5min absence.
And since I have a bit of a streak of dark humour within me, when I have to get coffee/ go to the restroom or get supplies I tell the class “Don’t kill anyone and don’t burn anything down” and when returning 2-3 minutes later “Oh great, everyone is alive!” + when the students inform me about their restroom break I also say “Don’t die” which is either met by confusion or a chuckle and the reply “I can’t make any promises!”
i absolutely hate the "let them draw on the desks! they have anxiety!" argument. no, the desks do not belong to you. doodle on something else. a sketchbook, perhaps. if the teacher was getting mad because the kid was doodling in their sketchbook during class (which can be a valid way to deal with adhd/anxiety as long as you can pay attention at the same time) i think that's unreasonable. but there's really no reason to draw on the school's property.

gonna be honest a phone is essential its 2021 as a college student I don't use my phone in class, but I have my phone on me, school shooters, break ins, my covid pass, if any sort of disaster happens your phone should be in your pocket you don't need to give your phone to your teacher just keep it on vibrate in your pocket. Not too mention I use it as a calculator in math.
I only disagree with the bathroom one. I always struggled with the bathroom, but never got diagnosed with anything until this year, even though I’ve been complaining to doctors since I was 11. I’m now 20.
I was always looked at as “trying to miss class” or “skipping” but I was in a lot of discomfort and pain.
At my school we sign a paper that says if we get caught with our phones more than once the school is allowed to keep the phone for 24 hours and a parent has to go with you to get it. Teachers have taken phones for them falling out of your bag. If they are in a really bad mood they take it for it being in your pocket.

as a former 'bad student' who would constantly ignore the teacher, draw on desks and go on my phone, i honestly have to agree with her tiktoks. the delivery isnt the best but the rules of putting their phones in the box when they have been asked multiple times to stop using them is completely fair, its disrupting the rest of the class when the teacher has to keep stopping to tell them off.
as far as drawing on desks goes, its illegal and considered vandilism; teachers will be told off and sometimes even charged if their students vandilise school property while under their care, they have enough work as it is, and so do the janitors!

Me and another kid used to write in pencil on our science desks (they were black slab tables, rather than wood desks). I used to leave messages for another kid and vice versa, never found out who they were lol. My teacher knew about it but since it could be easily wiped away, she never told me to stop. It was never particularly destructive.
For the most part, I agree with this lady. Depending on the teacher, sometimes you'd get your phone back at the end of class or have your parent pick it up at the office. Not to be this guy, but its better than a teacher raging at you or "giving you the ruler" like in the "old days." These rules are pretty standard lol

She'd make you wipe the desk. No phones unless allowed in her class, no gum, no snacks. She was kinda strict, but I actually loved that lil lady. She was my homeroom teacher all 4 years.
Another harmless case of vandalism: my lunch table used to leave a decorated apple for the janitors regularly (we cleaned up otherwise)

If you can't put your phone away for a 45 minute lesson then there's obviously something wrong, unless you have autism, ADHD or a mental health condition that stops you from being able to focus properly then there's literally no excuse

Maybe if she didn't call the cops Over a phone which is a risky thing to do for multiple reasons and is just insane, there would be less negativity towards her. One getting cops for not necessary situations has gone wrong many times, And 2 when that cop is distracted by the entitled teacher, some kid could be doing something worse.

Yeah, as someone that was a student recently (I graduated, thank goodness), that teacher was one of the cool ones.
- If you're gonna draw on the desk, get a sketchbook. All but one of my teachers in my entire life was ever bothered by me having a sketchbook and drawing near constantly in class (turns out I have ADHD so that's why)
- A good chunk of teachers made you put you phone in a shoe cubby thing. I didn't like it too much, I actually forgot my phone once or twice because it was in one, but the cool teachers will let you have them when class finished early/there was work you could listen to music while doing. The coolest teacher had put power strips on either side of shoe cubbies so students could charge their phones during class (which I find to be a great bribery idea. If only that wasn't the class I forgot my phone in- also being my first period class. Luckily got it back at the end of the day, but still)
- I'm torn on the bathroom breaks thing. My French teacher was really cool and would let students go get snacks/lunch if it was the morning or someone didn't have a lunch period, so surely some teachers would let you go grab a snack if you asked politely. But I also know there's those kinds of teachers that would pull a "why didn't you go to the bathroom during break?" kind of move, which is extremely disconnected and 100% a surefire way to immediately get students to drop social points with you. But I also get that some students, teachers don't trust- from first hand experience where I would be going to the bathroom daily in my Junior year math class, but the teacher would always let me go but almost never this other boy that would ask. It just rubs me the wrong way tbh.

I’m homeschooled now but when I was in public school, this teacher would have been totally reasonable and even a teacher I would have loved. With the doodling on the the desks, it’s not like she’s just completely banning doodling like some teachers do, she just doesn’t want it on the desk because it can damage them, she even offered paper to draw on instead. With the phones, I was never allowed to be on my phone during class in school. I would keep it in my backpack because I had a class that was far away from my locker and I didn’t have time to get to my locker and then to the bus. It’s awesome that she allows her students to use their phones at all, and it’s understandable that she doesn’t want them out during class. If there is a reason why you may need your phone at certain times for family issues for example, she seems like the kind of teacher that would be really understanding about that. For the bathrooms, her allowing the student to use the bathroom without question is already better than a lot of teachers, and she needs to know where the students are at all times because she’s legally responsible for them. I think the way she asked about the medical issues was a little blunt and could have been approached a little differently (“hey, I’ve noticed you’ve been taking really long bathroom breaks, if you’re having some bodily troubles, could you have your parents send in a note confirming that just so I know that you’re actually in the bathroom during those times and not just messing around?). But if a kid is just fucking around, she can actually get in trouble for that. Once again, she seems like she would be really understanding if you told her that you do actually have a medical issue, and she also seems like she would let you have a snack if you asked. When I was in school, some of the meds I took would make me hungrier throughout the day and that could be the case for other students, which she would likely understand and happily accommodate. Overall, she seems like a great teacher and the way people are shitting on her really shows how students are treating teachers. Also, as someone with anxiety since childhood, at the worst of my anxiety, I would freak the fuck out if my hand slipped and I actually drew on a desk and I would be cleaning that shit up immediately because I was TERRIFIED I would be in trouble with the teacher.
As a person who draws to cope with my anxiety, it really isn’t that hard to pull out a notebook or have scratch paper on hand to draw on when I need it. I think the teacher is in the right. It’s a different story when they don’t let me doodle at all, but they’re just looking out for the school property, and they don’t get new desks or chairs often so they have to make sure to take care of the ones they get.

As someone w/ generalized anxiety disorder, I understand doodling in YOUR notebook or papers. But like, vandalizing the desks which others have to use/clean is just rude. Then using anxiety as an excuse? That's low for people (which is a lot more than you'd expect) w/ anxiety who need outlets to ground themselves back to reality
I'm 99% sure the "anxiety" of the teens drawing on desks is self diagnosed.
I draw on the desks when I'm super bored then I erase it sometimes or make it small. Its usually just shapes like stars or diamonds, nothing too graphic. I do it for other people to see some history on the desk. If there are drawings that are inappropriate I erase them, but their always by other students so it doesnt bother me too much. It's just digusting on my desk though. I sometimes do animal drawings to cheer people up since most of my classes are so boring and our desks cant have anything on them. Or they sometimes dont allow drawing at all so I cant have paper on my desk at instruction time.
Exactly! I'm 27, and many people doodle in meetings and zoom calls on their notebooks all the time in every office I worked in. But if a grown adult with anxiety started to draw on the office desk it would be so weird 🤣 I think a lot of things they tell you in school that "prepare you for the adult world" is BS, but this is fair enough.
I never had to clean for other people so honestly I don't see why some people here (the com) make such a big deal out of it as long as it's not like carved in the desk ( which I've seen happen), written in non erasable marker or something inappropriate I really don't see the problem

i think shes a pretty good teacher from her videos. she seems passionate and kind about teaching and she also doesnt get paid very well (if she was doing really rude things, that may not be a great excuse lol) and taking away phones because youre using them in class instead of paying attention is pretty normal (at least in my past schools, thats what they would do) but yeah i dont really get the hate idk

Cool teachers annoyed tf out of me. As a kid with misophonia, anxiety, and all sorts of other issues i always preferred teachers that were strict because at least there was some structure to keep me from being overwhelmed and having a nervous breakdown because everyone was doing whatever they wanted (ik it’s selfish but i can’t help it lol)

In general I find it very comforting to listen to videos like this, because it makes the "quite masses" speak up louder a bit more and let someone know, that there are still people out there with a moralic stable view on the world other than many people on Tiktok.
I do have social anxiety and I never use the bathroom at school unless it is recess or lunch (or I can not hold it anymore). It is just something that your body gets used to I suppose.

I feel so bad for this teacher. She genuinely sounds reasonable. High school teachers are not there to pamper and spoil students, but to teach.
My teachers get in trouble for doing a bad job as basically doing their job and teaching. Test results from one class gets compared to other classes on the same level and if one teacher is seriously not doing well they tend to send other authority figures in schools to check there teaching okay

As a person who goes to school in the UK we get a detention if we’re even just checking the time on our phones, we’re not aloud to go to the bathroom in lessons and if we’re even a minute late to class then it’s also a detention. All these detentions are an hour long btw.. so her rules sound absolutely amazing 😅

At my school not only do you get detention, but it gets taken away for a week. My teacher said that at the school he used to work at, your phone would be taken for the whole year.

Dude in my school if our phones are out for like one second we get campus cleanup (filling a bucket with trash around the school then sorting it into the right trash cans) and if their out again we get Friday school (basically detention but on Friday) she’s very chill honestly
