There are actually quite a few mystical approaches that can have that effect, it seems magic users really don't like people with higher intelligence, probably has something to do with the ability to think critically and question things, those two thought processes usually have a way of undermining magic, especially when it comes from another magic-user.

Anyone else notice how Hawkeye is just a pro? He by and large just relies on skill. I liked in Thor he considered a rifle, than grabs a bow. He's sometimes arrogant, but he earned it.
I love Cap. But Clint is the perfect soldier without a boost. I loved when Clint made a splint for Thor and then made makeshift arrows.

Nine stories out of ten, Steve's tactical mind and intellect also came from the serum.
It enhanced his mind a lot more. Steve was chosen for his heart. His bravery.
If Steve didn't have the serum, he wouldn't be an avenger.
If Hawkeye had the serum? Well, he'd gain all the same reflexes and strength as Captain America, and the same strategic brilliance.

Hawkeye never played catch up in EMH, he considered himself too good for a group he has to save every week. And he was right.
It's true in the comics... say it with me, "depending on the writer"... but in EMH, he was never out of his element. "Everyone's turned into Gamma Monsters? Who do I know who's knows this stuff? Banner. How do I get Banner out of the Hulk?" Hawkeye to Hulk "I'll beat you physically." Hulk:: "HA!" And Hulk was so amused he turned back into Banner which is how Hawkeye beat him.
Hawkeye's experience gives him cunning, his cunning keeps him two steps ahead of the other guy. Clint wasn't included in Amora's spell not because he was underestimated, I think it's he can't be broken down by one quality. "He's a supernaturally accurate archer!" Yeah... but what puts him in the most advantageous position for that one accurate shot?

    • @Genya2008
      @Genya2008 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

I think so too Iron Man allways depends on his tech and intelligence, Captain America may allways had the heart and the will but deep down he also thought who would he been without the Serum, Thor allready was good explained in the Video.
But Hawkeye he knows who he is what he made wrong in the past and what is all his good and bad behavior he knows and accept himself how he is.
You can also see this in other versions of animated Avengers Series like this one that plays in the same universe as Ultimate Spiderman and Hulk and the Agents of Smash.
In the Avengers series of this universe there is an Episode were the Avengers switch bodys because of M.O.D.O.K. and the Mindstone.
Rigth after the Body Switch everyone tried to act like the body in that they are like Hawkeye tried to use Mjollnir because he was in Thors body, Black Widow just tried smashing things because she was in Hulk´s body and so on.
At the end of the Episode Hawkeye was the very first who had the idea that assured the victory he stopped trying to copy Thor ut instead used Thors body combined with his own skills and after that everyone tried the same and they beat M.O.D.O.K. wich bye the way was in this episode in control of the Hellicarrier.

Tony losing his intelligence reminds me of the story where he had to delete all the knowledge in his mind to keep Norman osborne from getting it. While on the run you just see him lose his brilliance bit by bit until he's eventually little more than a vegetable. He was at the peak of his influence and status as one of the greatest minds and watching him fall like that, after Civil war sure, alot of people were ready to see that downfall, but its tough to read as an Iron man fan.

The shows we got in replacement just went downhill as they progressed. Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers Assemble, Agents of Smash and Ultimate Spider-man had none of the charm this show had built.

I also think they started using EMH as a template for the MCU then decided that it would be more worthwhile to not do that part way through the production of some of the movies. Powerless is pretty high on my list, I think my first time seeing it was a sort of marathon of the series they ran on Disney XD during the build-up to the series finale. And even after all these years, I am still hoping for a season 3 of EMH to happen, mostly because Disney now has direct access to the metrics regarding the viewing preferences of their shows and movies, which means they can actually see just how well-loved, and watched, EMH is, in addition to purchases of physical and digital copies of the series for the private collections of fans to watch on other platforms.
And I am with you, Powerless is a great look at Thor, Captain America, and Iron Man when they have super part of who they are stripped from them and we get to see their mindsets as characters and what the absence of these powers mean to them, they are in essence stripped down to the core of their characters. And the thing about Hawke Eye is that we know from his interactions in prior episodes, and the episode itself, with all the other members of the Avengers, especially those 3, is that even if he had been stripped of his fancy bow and assortment of advanced arrows all the way back to a more traditional medieval arsenal nothing would really change about him as a character. What makes Hawk Eye such an incredible ordinary person isn't that he had some natural talent or superior training or was born with access to resources or any innate powers, what makes him so incredible is that he knew he had no natural skills and chose to train in those skills out of necessity.
Something I think a lot of people miss about Enchantress's depowering spell, aside from what probably flew over their heads before it was explained in this video, is that the spell specifically took away powers and abilities that were granted or innate to the individual, which is why Tony's magical lobotomy happened (Tony was always an innate technologically capable individual), Captain America's powers were granted to him by the super-soldier serum (the power it granted magnified his innate personality), And Thor lost access to both his mystical abilities and godly strength (both of which were innate to him as part of his unique lineage). But that's not the way for Hawk Eye, he had to work to get to where he was, because of his background as both a member of the Circus of Crime and S.H.I.E.L.D. agent both forced him to work for what he earned and prove his skills in trying situations.

First time I saw Powerless was on my first viewing of EMH on Netflix. I guess I was just one of the lucky ones.
Anyway, as fun as the episode was when I watched it, I will admit to having some beef with it on my second viewing. The entire episode seems to have a point of Thor learning to be humble, but that never seems to be much of a problem before this episode? The one with Spiderman and Captain America was one I really liked because it built off the Skrull Invasion episodes a few episodes back, and that's one that I think worked really well as a character driven story, but for Thor learning humility, I just felt it was done better in the episode with the Malekith episode.

I think if you watch how Thor acts before this episode with ‘powerless’ in mind, you can see a little bit of a superiority complex in him. Not a big one by any means, and he deeply respects his teammates, but I think given his previous attitude, it’s reasonable that having his godhood stripped away would destroy any sense of self-worth he has. I rewatched Earth's Mightest Heroes a few years back and Powerless was one of my favourite episodes. I love the occasional episodes that go into the characters more than plot. Plus the theme song of the whole show was what kept me returning back when I was a kid and made me go looking for it as a teen at the time as I had never fully watched the series, or believed I hadn't anyway.
And I wish they continued on with this series instead of Avengers Assemble. I could not watch more than 3 episodes. And it's the last episode of season 2 of Earth's Mightest Heroes is probably the only one I dislike, mainly because it felt rushed as they had to wrap up the series.

by the way, comparing what if with Ehm is something that has been happening to me since I started with the series, and I don't think it will stop, because there is still enough left.
I don't remember all of them now, but a couple of examples would be (spoiler)
-When at the end of episode 3 Loki is speaking to humanity and telling them that he is going to be their king and all, it reminded me of, obviously, the epic Captain Skrull speech
-the end of episode 4, where the protagonist realizes that everything he did so far for love led him to madness and uncontrolled power, so he ends up heartbroken and isolated from everything, and then the credits begin and end silently. That describes what if episode 4 and Michael korvac episode perfectly

I’ll be honest, I’m not a fan of this episode. Nothing personally against it, but the concept of the “losing losing their power and learning humility” is something I’ve seen again and again before. While the ending makes me wonder if the Destroyer armor will ever be used again, this isn’t one of the episodes I’d watch like Yellowjacket or Masters of Evil. When I do watch this episode, it’s mostly to see Hawkeye and the Enchantress.

Or what if after an experience with losing his power that turned really bad, the godlike character is now even more condescending towards normal civilians because he experienced and know their powerlessness.

I think you might have some facts turned around.
EMH was produced by Disney as a way to promote the Avengers before the movie came out. Some execs were worried the audience wouldn't know who these guys were and why they were fighting together. Remember Phase 1 was only connected by a cameo here or there and a post credit scene. EMH followed in the mold of B:TAS, X-men and Spider-Man. Do what was fun to prime kids and adults to buy tons of merchandise.
Once Avengers blew away Box Office expectations, they wanted a series more in sync with the movies. But EMH didn't fail. It succeeded in what Disney wanted out of it and moved on. A bit cold-hearted, but something familiar to fans of Gargoyles, Goof Troop, Mighty Ducks, Aladdin, Ultimate Spider-Man, and Clone Wars can emphasize with.

Actually, this has always been my least favorite episode of the show. It feels like a lazy retelling of the first Thor movie for no good reason. Loki and the Destroyer seem to be in it just because they were in the movie - I can't fathom why Enchantress and Surtur would need Loki's help with this, and the Destroyer is never mentioned before or after.
Also, the show has established that each of the heroes were active for some time before joining the Avengers, so I would have assumed this version of Thor has already been through some kind of test of humility - he never came off as particularly arrogant or haughty before this.
The spell also seems wildly inconsistent. Why does Tony get to keep his Mark 1 armor? Can you really get rid of Mjolnir with just some magic? Why does no one else ever do that, then? It seems to work the way it does because the plot needs it to, rather than having any logical basis.
You also said that this episode sets up the plot with Surtur and Ragnarok, but I'm pretty sure we don't learn anything here that isn't established in Acts of Vengeance and the Ballad of Beta Ray Bill.
I do think that the concept at the core of this story - stripping away the powers of the Avengers and examining who they would be without them, focusing on who they are as people and their interactions with each other - is the base of a really strong and powerful narrative.

    • @PillarofGarbage
      @PillarofGarbage  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It's not perfect, but I think there's enough of that interesting core concept to make it a really interesting one. AFAIK, tentative plans for Season 3 had Loki attacking the Avengers again at the behest of Surtur - so Enchantress' and Surtur's subjugation of Loki in this episode is at least one new thing we learn.
And maybe less so in Season 2 (although Skrull arc Tony does spring to mind here), but Season 1 Iron Man is often very arrogant IMO!
