    I just want to give you guys a shout out. Matt for everything you did after your accident for the guy who was involved in his own tragic accident. Tim I just watched a 20/20 special “In an Instant” about the valley fire. When I saw the segment with you in it I was like I have seen that guy before. Great job on getting those people to safety. You two are the definitions of hero’s. Keep up the good work. Hopefully you will be back to your homes soon. We have not been able to go to our summer home due to ranch fire and I have missed fishing in Clearlake all summer.

    Matt, thanks bro for all this information. I am in northeast Kansas and am a pond fisherman at heart. For some reason I’ve never had luck and actually have never caught a single fish on a jig. Like you said, it’s all in my head and I put them up too quickly. This year, I’ve dedicated to frogs and big worms but next year is my jig and chatter bait year I can feel it. This year has been fantastic by the way. The popping pad crashers and 12” June bug worm have taken most of the glory. I’ve caught more big fish than ever in my life. I LOVE your channel and am glad you’re doing well. Hope the fire goes out soon. You and Tim truly help guys like me. Keep it up and keep em coming. Thanks!

      defintely the most informative channel. They should have 500K subs, not those other channels out there. Too bad its mostly kids watching fishing channels who want nonsense challenges and V-Logging. Tactical Bassin should have more than those "Googan Squad" memebers except Lunkers TV, I like him.

    Brother no joke, I get very interested in hearing history behind lures and such just like you did with the swim jig if you could throw some videos out and just put a little bit of History behind what you're talking about but still teach us about the Bates themselves would be a rockstar Channel I've tried so many times to contact your office to go on a guided trip but I never get an answer or they're too busy and I get a call back but I haven't received a call back I hope one day I can meet you and we can go fishing I live in Nebraska and we have a lot of cool lakes here thank you for everything you've taught me because it's worked out here. I've been praying for you through this whole car accident with you and Tim also with your friend that got crushed by the vehicle you give me so much inspiration, I had a drug problem for almost 10 years and I got clean do two fishing and learning fishing and working hard and everything you teach me helps me stay clean so I just wanted to say I love you like a brother and thank you for changing my life around and being a part of it

      It's kinda like a bad movie. Just gotta force yourself to remember all the bad that came with the addiction. We tend to block out negatives and just like a bad movie that you happened to like a few scenes from, over time you end up watching it again because you start forgetting the bad and only remembering the good. Just keep remembering how horrible the waiting was both feeling miserable and the time lost on the hunt, hang in there!

      Bass Nazi thank you so much I really enjoy the community that bass fishing has brought me I tried Narcotics Anonymous I've been in and out of treatment centers, you name it I've done it and the thing that is helping the most is bass fishing or fishing in general and all most the people I meet through the community of fishing are very understanding and not judgement, every time I had a slip is because I got complacent and remembered the fun times I had well in my addiction and didn't register all the negative that came with it and the people I've hurt and the destruction I've done to myself so I appreciate your reply and your advice because it is like a poor movie and I need 2 think about the negative and the misery that comes with those bad decisions thank you everybody for your help and your support I've been clean now for three years and I owe a lot of it to this group of people

    Jigs opened up my bass fishing in ways I can’t even describe…swim jigs as “finesse spinner/chatterbaits”, working docks, hopping the bottom, dead dropping timber, it’s just endless. What I did was say “I *need* to get good with a jig…all I’m going to fish this week is a jig”. The first dock I flipped it under, I noticed my line was moving sideways instead of falling, set the hook and BAM…you couldn’t write something that ridiculous. By the end of the week, it was a top 5 confidence bait and in the last ten years, I’ve massively expanded…I now make my own jigs and my most expensive combo (metanium/conquest 844c) is a dedicated jig combo. If you’re still on the fence, just get black/blue and a sunfish pattern…finesse if you’re impatient…or a 3/8oz swimjig/paddle tail if you’re big into chatters and spinners. Once you discover the possibilities with a jig, it expands your horizon tenfold.

    That Luke clausen casting jig in go to has been money for me. Many times I have caught fish flipping it, swimming it and dragging it all in the same day. That is where most of my days on the water start now just tie it on and go to work. Thank you for turning me on to dirty jigs. I love supporting my home state company.

    I started jig fishing as a kid years ago back in the days of Frank Gardner and Dee Thomas who I know you're familiar with. My first jig fishing lesson was being dropped off on a secluded island in the delta with a empty paint can and no fishing gear. When the can was full of craw I was told I could squeeze back on the boat and fish as long as I didn't say a word, make any noise or ask any questions!! Lmao... 3 hours later my paint can was full of Crawdads and I knew how to work a jig before I even dropped one in the water.
    Still play golf with Frank weekdays here in Manteca. He's 85, carries his own golf bag and walks the course and he's still fishing the delta!! I just finished rebuilding his 1967 9hp Mercury and he's pissed that I won't tell him how much it cost and won't let him pay me lol.
    Btw I never take my day box of jigs out without taking my box of tubes along too :-)

    • @bassnazi4713
      @bassnazi4713 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mr. FatBasstard actually glad you mentioned the crawdads. Richard Gene the Fishing Machine uses them in several vids with a great technique for keeping them alive on the hook and it always surprises me when someone my age and younger acts shocked you can use live craws lol.

    • @mr.fatbasstard648
      @mr.fatbasstard648 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Bass Nazi back in the late sixties there was a lot of live bait being used. We used newspaper rubber bands much like we do nowadays with the criss cross o ring wacky rig hook to help keep them alive. We didn't put the hook into the crawdads. You could actually feel the bite and the claws getting pulled off and then that live craw got annihilated on the next hit lol.
      We use ball jigs back then and skirts tied like a fly with rubber band streamers and shredded balloons. The balloons streamers look terrible and shriveled up out of the water but when they hit the water they had great action.
      The old boys didn't send me in the water to catch bait for that day they sent me in the water to learn the defensive and fleeing movements of crawdads.

    • @bassnazi4713
      @bassnazi4713 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Mr. FatBasstard exactly. That's one of the reasons i usually recommend his channel. It's like Realistic Fishings, in the sense he isn't really pushing that you need a rod for every single lure you throw like the companies like people believing, and shows more about the knowledge. I know how tough it can be to track down crappie this time of year here in Alabama and the knowledge, not some new expensive thing you can buy, is what he has because he can go out and make it look easy lol. That's one thing great on here is that when they are recommending the luxurious, expensive stuff, they usually also offer more affordable options as well. I really hate how people have turned fishing into a shaming thing over the gear people use. No matter what they use, they are out there enjoying the sport/hobby/lifestyle we have all come to know. Would rather someone be out catching something on a Zebco 33, which worked great for many years and you can still luck up and buy some from the 60-70's, than be stuck sitting at home thinking people will make fun of them for being out there with cheap stuff.

      Howabouthetruth have ya tried out the ProTi yet? I know we've talked about Lew's before, if not drop the money on one, it's a place here in Alabama that usually has them significantly cheaper on Ebay.

    Great great advice Matt. So many considerations, but you made it easy! Here in Canada, brown or white work a little better for smallies and pike, but those 3 colours...you can't go wrong. Quick story - I was throwing a black and blue football head one day with a black and blue trailer and getting no bites. Out of sheer frustration, I switched to a green pumpkin trailer and the difference was night and day. 6 fish in like 20 minutes. Sometimes, you just never know with those colour combinations. Hope you guys make it back home safe!

    I live in the northeast, and the majority of our lakes are pretty clear water. Green Pumpkin / Green pumpkin craw typically works very well but I've caught a few on brown jigs too. I thought it was funny how in one of your older jig videos you talked about how guys who've never caught a jig fish think it's impossible to get bit on it, but then when they do they stick to them. I could never get bit, but earlier this year I finally got a fish on one and now I always have one tied on 😂. I love your guys' videos, I probably wouldnt have started using jigs as much as I do without watching them. And I'm keeping you guys in my prayers, I'm sure that between the fire and recovering from the crash that everything will work out.

      good ol' Manny Jigs are a super fun way to catch them. What I do to build confidence in a bait that I'm not sure about is to tie it on and keep it on until I've caught a bunch of fish on it. I was the same way with jigs a couple years ago. Now, however, I have a huge box slam full of them. My favorite is throwing swim jigs. So much fun! Keep trying and keep one tied on until you catch em'.

    Hope you guys get back in your homes soon, it's been a nasty summer for fires here in the west for sure! So, couple of questions.
    One of the lakes I frequent is basically a filled sandstone canyon. So the cover is mostly shelves, ledges, and big boulder fields. What's my jig option here? Seems like the water is usually 10-30 feet deep where I fish, and the smallmouth love this cover- I'd just like to start seeing bigger fish.
    Second scenario, another nearby lake is small and shallow- probably ten feet at the most. Being in the desert heat and sun, the grass gets thick and tall around this time of year, growing almost to the surface in spots. I suppose that flipping style jig is still the answer, even from the shore? Sometimes it feels like Texas rigs don't even get through the stuff well.

      The second lake sounds like the river/gravel mine ponds I fish. Heavy heavy grass. No jig goes through that stuff. The only option is swimming over the top or something weightless Texas rigged that won’t fall through to the bottom.

      That's about all I usually muster up there too. Curious though cause I know there's big bass in there, just haven't caught any since spring...

    When u were talking about the stouter hook on the football head jig in the summer because the fish fight harder in the warmer water you should also mention that in places like Florida where it doesn’t get cold the fish actually fight harder in the fall when the water is slightly cooler and they aren’t boiling in the hot water fighting for shade and more oxygen I fish south Florida and our finesse bite is that super hot time of year when the fish are moving slow and want slow easy meals like a jig

    Thanks for breaking down the different types of heads. Could you share some thoughts on line tie orientation and angle? If you go to TW and click on "Flipping Jig" there are jigs with horizontal line tie and ones with vertical line tie. Then there's 0 degree, 30 degree, 60 etc. How/Why/When does this matter?
