Studying the masters is how people have been learning to paint since the beginning of time. Internet call outs have made young artists scared of copying anything but it is absolutely okay to do studies. It’s only plagiarism if you try and claim the artwork as your own

I agree. I’m an animal artist and never really drew people before.
I started drawing humans recently because I’m in a lot of fandoms with humans and I want to be able to do vent art AND it’s very in-demand.
I started looking at and copying some stuff my favourite artists drew to help see how they did it. I did this in a sketchbook but I wouldn’t claim those drawings as my own as they’re purely for practise. They’ve helped me a lot and I’m considering doing the same with backgrounds but that’s a lot trickier.

I wanted to say every time you mention your channel name, I correct you saying "The Above Average Artist"!
I believe you did a wonderful job with your construction of these Studio Ghibli scenes! When I did some Kiki's Delivery Service paintings, using some of the movie source imagery, I also had trouble matching colors. I know part of the problem was I did not have the same medium as was used in the making of the film! I know that was part of the problem you were facing too! I even looked into getting the watercolors from the Ghibli museum, yes they sell the custom set, but it is quite pricey! SO I think we both need to give ourselves a break!

nah cause this is the average artists thought process and work through art this is how we do it and we arent like super amazing but we can create and our processes are very similar. I would consider myself average as well and i have 15 years self practice and a art degree. I'm still just average and watching her process is very similar to my own

Absolutely gorgeous! And the great Masters always copied works of the artists before them...they thought of it as the best way to learn techniques to use in their own artwork.

So happy to hear TH-cam has been a good force of motivation for you. I remember when you were feeling a bit down from the book trolls. I'm thankful that you make these videos, Steph! I think these are amazing. I gasped when I saw the thumbnail!♡
Also watching you recreate these Ghibli scenes reminded me of concept art for animations. The ones I've seen (for classic Disney films) were done in really different styles from the final animations, so it's cool to see all the different interpretations. Thanks for my weekly dose of artistic inspo♡

My elementary school is (was? Idk, just finished 8th grade. Never going back there) an "art school" but they focus more on music and dance. They had 2 art teachers (one of them found a better job) so they had two art courses. I unfortunately didn't get into the better one.
My teacher brought in his paintings to class and told us to copy them. When we weren't copying paintings, we were drawing portraits or landscapes.
The other teacher let his students do whatever they wanted as long as they were using the materials he told them to use. (one of his students painted a very beautiful Joker portrait)
All the drawings i made there are bad. (Except one. A graphite still life. That looks good)
We were always using gouache, but i never learned how to mix pretty colors or blend things together. I'm trying to do that in the summer break so i can do something in 9th grade (I'm going to an actual art school to learn animation)

I love these so much!! I agree that painting studies from sources that inspire you is such a good way to learn techniques/see things in new ways :)
The first scene you painted from Spirited Away is probably one of my favorite scenes of all time - it makes me feel so nostalgic/sad but I have no idea why lol. If you ever have the chance to visit Helsinki, I would 100% recommend going on a ferry to Suomenlinna because there are so many tiny islands along the way that have just one house on them. It reminds me of a real life version of that scene!

You are right, you always learn when you spend time with your art and style. Sometimes a little push is very helpful, that's why I like challenges like mermay or inktober.
I totally love these images you painted here, I loved your style so far, this slightly wonky, light style with wonderful colours, you are so good with colours and creating atmosphere! And I love how you take your art to a more impressionist style, losing a bit (or all?) of the wonkyness.

These turned out SOOOO good. I absolutely love the backgrounds and artwork of Studio Ghibli. The first movie of theirs I saw was The Secret World of Arrierty. I loved The Borrowers as a child and pretended they lived in the wall next to my bed, I used to put my ear to the wall and listen.... (basically eavesdropping whatever my neighbours were up to, but pretending it was Borrowers). It was such a treat seeing it animated, as an adult ❤️
