    While your approach to installing the crank pulley is the only practical way to do it, when I taught classes for Ford, we had a two sided hot plate to warm the gear and gloves to transfer / install it. It was recommended against heating the gear with a flame. Great job and thanks.

      That sounds like a great method! Thanks for the info!

    I used a harbor freight heat gun to evenly warm up the gear when I removed and installed it. Did the job. No idea why people feel the need for a torch

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The torch just works a lot faster. Either one is fine, just the torch works better and a lot of people don't have heat guns but do have torches. But it doesn't matter either way.

    Add locktite to cam bolts

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's not necessary. If you torque them down to the proper setting, they're not going anywhere.

    I think you have the timing marks mixed up. Both cam and crank should have the dots at 12:00. You have the cam at 6:00 and crank at 12:00

      Not really sure where you are getting your information, everything I've ever seen has always said to line them up with the cam at 6:00 and crank at 12:00, including the instructions that came with the timing gear set used in this video.

    Just before reinstalling the timing cover, did you place the black rubber tab at the bottom of the cover?

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      My timing cover actually came with the seal pre installed. But if you put the cover on an even surface and then use something flat like a block of wood, it’s relatively easy to press the seal into the timing cover.

    Got a question...I'm putting a sbc back together....I set everything up just like on this video (heads off, #1 up) but needed to take cover off to change for a better one (had turned motor w crank socket) and noticed the dot on crank clog is straight up but cam cog is now at top instead of bottom. The lifters and pushrods aren't in yet but was wondering, do I put it back w cam dot at 12 or move it back to 6? Heads are on and #1 is up again. Thanks

      @TheBurnoutShow  ปีที่แล้ว

      You'll want to make sure you line up those gears before you move forward with anyone else.

    What's that doing to the thrust bearing?

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not much. The crankshaft doesn't really move much during this process and even if it did, still wouldn't really cause any problems.

      As far as I am aware, every source I have ever seen, including the instructions that came with this timing gear set, say to line up the gears in this configuration. If all of my sources of information are incorrect I'd love to know.

    I can’t get mine to go all the way fully back . I can stick a .010 feeler gauge in between the crank and gear

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sorry to hear that. Unfortunately that could be caused by a number of things. If you could provide me some more info about the problem like exactly what you did. Is the engine in your car or is it on a stand like mine? Are you manually trying to turn it over and it won't or are you trying to start the engine with the car key and it won't start?

    what do they mean by being 180 degrees out on a timing chain?

    • @eramirez198121
      @eramirez198121 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It mean that cylinder one is at its exhaust stroke and not at its intake stroke. So picture a circle is 360 degrees. The camshaft turns only 180 degrees when the crankshaft turns 360. So you might need to turn the crankshaft 360 with the change on both gears so then your camshaft turn 180 degrees and that should put you were your need to be. Please if I am wrong someone correct me.

    • @jonathanlawson4667
      @jonathanlawson4667 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Can't really be 180 out on the cam gear if you line up the dots lol however you can be 180 out when you put your distributor in

    …ummm…why not just turn the mallet?🤔

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Because the mallet isn’t designed to be used that way and that’s the fastest way to ruin/break your mallet.

    Why do you call the sprockets gears? Very misleading.

    • @TheBurnoutShow
      @TheBurnoutShow  ปีที่แล้ว

      Because they are effectively the same thing. The words are practically interchangeable. A sprocket is just a type of gear. And the timing gears are commonly referred to and known as gears not sprockets.
