  • I made another scraping plane, but this time a little bit smaller :)
    To build this tool i used boxwood.
    The scraper was cuted from an old laminated plane blade and sharpened by Bill Carter's BLUNT CHISEL TECHNIQUE:

    On this small scale you can really appreciate the fine texture of the boxwood.. it looks like butter!

    I both love and hate these videos of you working with boxwood
    Love because of the lovely tools and handles you make with it
    And hate because seeing the creamy color of the wood and it’s shavings makes me hungry lol

    Jak zwykle duża precyzja wykonania. Im mniejszy strug, tym więcej pracy trzeba poświęcić i uwagi. Kąt osadzenia noża powoduje poprawne struganie zarówno zgodnie ze słojami drewna, jak też "pod włos". Tego jeszcze nigdzie nie widziałem i dotychczas uważałem, że to niemożliwe do wykonania, gratuluję 👌.
    As always, high precision of workmanship. The smaller the stream, the more work and attention will have to be paid. The knife mounting angle causes correct planing both according to the grain of the wood and "against the grain". I have not seen it anywhere before and so far I thought it was impossible to do, congratulations 👌.

    This is amazing on so many levels. I can totally see how this could be a primary tool on my tool chest. The process, the video, everything is amazing. BTW, I have rescued a plane iron from among the ruins of an old blacksmith workshop that you have in one of your planes, the one that has tiny points in a row. I understand it was used for prepping board surfaces before gluing on the veneer. No idea how to sharpen it though. The squirrel is both cute and mighty. Thank you, Gakos!

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you! If toothed blade have deep grooves the blade will be serve long time yet, if not nothing can help. If the back of the blade is rusted clean it with steel brush, don't flatten the back as normal blade (you can do few moves on high grid stone to check how the tooths looks but not too many times because you will make the tooths lower).
      Next grind new bevel until you feel little burr on the back of the blade. To remove the burr hammer the cutting edge into end grain of some wood. After that the blade should be ready to work. Regards!

    I'm not familiar with this tool. Is the bevel towards the handle? Do you sharpen it by drawing a burr going forward, just like a #80 cabinet scraper? So, is it a little cabinet scraper on a handle that cuts on the push?

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It is sharpened as "blunt chisel" (90 deg bevel). Check instructions in the descripion to see how it works. You can also wath my 013 video how i do that kind of scraper. Regards!

    Speed and aesthetic design on such a tiny job.
    What was the cutting angle and bevel angle you used?
    Reminded me of the squirrel hurrying and scurrying around before winter. Must be quite an inspiration.
    Thanks for all the nice videos.

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Glenn, cutting angle was 105-110 deb (i don't remember) and the bevel was not the bevel because there was 90 deg, it was sharpened like blunt chisel / card scraper. Regards!

    Hey man, I like your hand plane. Do you do different types? Also, what would you charge for your planes in (IRONWOOD)? You could use instead of the high carbon steel you shown using here in this video for some old wood chisels. Just cut the handle off, or you could leave handle on so you would have the use of the chisel and fit it to your base. Might be a cheaper way of creating a blade for the base. Just my opinion. I look forward to hearing from you. Thank you for this video mate.

    • @StavrosGakos
      @StavrosGakos  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! Actually i don't make it for sell. Ironwood is beautiful, but i don't have any piece of that wood.
      Making plane blades from old laminated blades is the best way for me. Old laminated plane blades are tapered (thinner above, thicker below), that helps adjust the blade. Chisels are tapered inversely, that's not good for it. Regards!

    At first I thought the mirror on the bench was there to make the video more visually interesting.
    Then the penny dropped.

    This is an amazing looking plane, could you provide the dimensions of it and the blade inside? I'd love to attempt to make one of a similar size, Thank you in advance for your kind reply. You do amazing work sir! To niesamowicie wyglądający samolot, czy mógłbyś podać jego wymiary i ostrze w środku? Chętnie spróbuję zrobić taki o podobnym rozmiarze. Z góry dziękuję za uprzejmą odpowiedź. Robi pan niesamowitą robotę, proszę pana!

      Dziękuję! Ostrze ma 15 mm szerokości, pozostałych wymiarów nie zmierzę bo jest zbyt nieregularny żeby je podać. Pozdrawiam

      As blunt chisel. I just tap in the wedge from the bottom. Regards!
