I appreciate the feedback. Yes it was long video haha. Thanks for watching. I'll be adding a third sub and doing it all over again. Stay tuned for another video.
Good stuff Corey, I use 4 subs and found that listening while adjusting the delays in each channel by ear with music was the only way I could dial in the lowest frequency rumble, experimentation with inverting the phase on individual channels is a must, so many variables to allow you to get the sub frequencies right, using the REW to get the smoothest response curve is great, but the final tweaking for me had to be done by ear. The minidsp 2x4hd is an incredible product, nothing even comes close for multiple sub users.
hey Thanks Josh! Ya I tried inverting my subs too but it did not give me the smoothest sound. If you can do it by ear is great, but it's tough lol. I love the minidsp I think it even works better with more subs. I only have 2 subs but will be upgrading soon to 4. Thanks for watching.!
The alignment tool built into REW within the controls tab would've saved you a ton of time doing this. Input sub 1 and sub 2 and adjust the sliders and it will give you a predicted frequency response based on the delays. Really powerful tool! I used to do what you're doing and it was VERY labour intensive! Try it out next time you're doing a calibration. Yes, I appreciate this video is over 2 years old. 😂

The "LR" and "BW" designations in the crossover settings stands for "Linkwitz-Riley" and "Butterworth". Basically an "LR" filter is comprised of multiple Butterworth filters. Linkwitz-Riley crossovers are flat, whereas Butterworth filters have a 3dB bump at the crossover point.
@@coreyskinner I'm learning as well. Putting a 7-channel active system in my truck and am learning how to use REW. Your video has helped me get some clarity.

Corey, I noticed you ran you sweeps at -21dbfs. I’ve seen the defaults are usually -12. I’m struggling with this step (level matching). At what volume was your receiver when you ran at -21? I know it’s always room specific
Is it just me or is there so little on YT in the way of measuring a pair of nearfield monitors less the sub(s) Thank you for sharing by the way. Much appreciated
Hello, Corey! I have some pair of speakers and they aren’t straight, they are as straight as a roundabout! So I wonder if I could connect these to a stereo speaker. I’m thinking to put in a stereo rca cable and then go through the miniDSP and a rca cable as output that connects to the amp, could I do that? I’m sorry if I where unclear, English isn’t my first language, what I wondered was if I could for example connect left Chanel to input 1 and then configure output 1 as output for just that Chanel so I can use a equlizer and then for example I connect the right Chanel into input 2 and then use output 2 for that Chanel and use equaliser for that speaker. (I don’t want them to interfere) Great video btw!
Nice Work. Should have worked REW on your mains as well, at least to tune for delays and flatten the frequency. Then X-over with your subs and see what you got. Dont need to tune beyond 8 or 9khz. Some say dont need to tune beyond 1khz. The X-over filters you were working with were Butterworth= BW and Linkwitz Riley= LR take your pick.
Yes thats true I should have but I wasn't worried about the mains at that time. I just upgraded to 2 Monolith M12s V2 and will be videoing installing them with Anthem ARC. Also upgrading to Martin Logan mains.
I agree but the miniDSP doesn’t have XLR inputs so if you wanna integrate the subs using that device it’s the only way. Or upgrade receiver with better room correction like separates.maybe MiniDSP has a different product with XLR inputs idk
After running REW. My subs were to loud for Audyssey to run. I lowered the gain on the minidsp to get it continue. When it was all said and done the setting for the sub was -12. I ran the pink noise on the Denon using the spl meter and umik-1 to put everything at 75db including the subs. Was this correct?
Hello Team, I need some help darling in my subwoofers, My question is should I add a house curve in the mini DSP and then run anthems ARC room correction or just use the mini DSP to flatten the response and then add the house curve in anthems ARC room correction? I’ve tried letting the anthem do everything but I think incorporating a miniDSP will achieve better results. I can’t move the subwoofers around my room to improve their in room response as I’m very limited with space.
After you were done tuning the subs, you said you were hooking up your mains. What did you mean.? I've never used rew, but am thinking on spending the 450 cnd for the minidsp and umik. The minidsp is only for tuning your subs, right? Since you only gave the two inputs from the sub outs on the receiver? I'm sorry, I'm a total newb with this.
Awsome 🤘🤘🤘 I will try highpass only cause my neighbour is mad 🤪 Subs rated to 11hz, measured to 8 hz 😁😁 Btw, neighbour is a different house, 80 meters away 🤪
Awesome vid, thanks heaps, one thing i cant get past is in the setup, in minidsp my reading of is -99 dBFs where as yours is -75, am i missing something?
That is correct. The miniDSP is going to be the EQ for the subs not your AVR. You can look up the miniDSP guide and it can walk you through it. Its very helpful. But I used only 1 sub out on my AVR
@@coreyskinner ok So I set up the mini DSp and now have to re run Audyessy will Audyessy not ask me to level adjust the sub level , and this would trow of my setting after gain matching ect , or do I just skip sub set up in Audyessy??
It's personal preference. Some people use Audyessy after and some don't. I have YPAO for Yamaha and I did not use it because after gain matching my subs and using the miniDSP it's far more accurate than the auto calibraion.
Hi, Thank you for sharing, I learned a lot. So my subs are Rel 1508, and they are stacked on top of each other. So when I take individual measurements, they are almost exactly the same. And then both at same time, are just louder all around. So I guess "delay" is only for when they are on different locations? Thank you!
Even though they are stacked on top of each other both of there gains should be set to the same (about 50%) and make sure they are out putting the same db level before using the REW. No delay is to flatten the curve out. So at every Hz level the same level of loudness is the same. For example you here thunder at 30hz it should be at 90db and slamming a car door which is around 100db should also be at 90db and so on. Even though both of your subs are in the same place I bet if you run REW you will have a bunch of super low and super high levels. thats where you need the delay.
Great subs, but moving them apart would significantly improve the smoothness of the bass and give you the ability to really dial in the lowest frequencies with the Mini delay option.
Bro those delay settings are huge. I don’t know what your setup looks like but if this is the way you’re doing it, I’d try like .5 .6 .7 etc.. 9ms is like 10ft in distance. Also something small like a .2ms could be the difference between peak output and a huge dip.

Did you gain match your subs before you did this? I heard gain matching should be done with REW first. And since you use front corners like me, you should pick whatever corner that gives you the best bass and use it with both subs to get them properly gain matched (don't SPLE the subs where they are already. For me that is the right corner)
Yes absolutely I gained matched both my subs so they were putting out the same level around 75db as with all my other speakers. I checked each speaker individually. I have a spl meter video on my channel that you can refer to if you are interested.
As far as I've seen from other tutorials the crossover for the mains should be set to the highest it will go on the AVR and then after all subs are properly eq then you set the crossover for the mains to whatever setting is best for your room and adjust from there.
First off, many thanks for the video Corey, quite informative. Would it not be beneficial to try to gain match you subs to your mains? At 43:07 it seems like your subs are running a bit high compared to the mains (I mean that drop after 100 Hz).
You are welcome! Yes it would be beneficial to gain match your subs before as I did. I may not have mentioned that in the video. Yes they are running a bit high but that's because I like my subs to be a little louder so when I watch something in low volume I can still hear the bass.

As far as I've seen from other tutorials the crossover for the mains should be set to the highest it will go on the AVR and then after all subs are properly eq then you set the crossover for the mains to whatever setting is best for your room and adjust from there.
I kept my mains crossover setting to 80db in the AVR
