- In this episode Mark will show how some cameras offer the ability to fire the flash at just before the second curtain closes. This is called rear or second curtain sync and it is used to freeze motion at the end of the exposure. When making long exposures while firing a flash rear curtain sync creates the effect of motion blur trailing the main subject.
Mark NEVER disappoints!!! like ever. Watched about 10 vids on this rear curtain thing and no one made it this simple!!! LEGEND!!!
This is the first video that broke it down and explained it so well. Thanks for this Mark!
instablaster...
After watching numerous videos on rear curtain flash thankfully I found yours, great tutorial
Thanks for providing detailed instructions on how to use rear curtain sync with both Canon and Nikon cameras. Great examples.
Your tutorials are some of the best on youtube! Thanks for the tips!
I'm a photography student but I find myself looking for your videos for every assignment I have since you seem to be able to explain things in a way that is easy to grasp. Thank you so much :D
@jsc974 You're doing everything right. The first flash happens before the shutter opens. It's called the pre-flash and it's used to meter the light from the flash. It's perfectly normal.
Many thanks for answering all these questions about photography to folks like me who didn't even know what shutter speed was!!!
i just want to say, i love your channel. Great tips and perfect demonstration.
very well explained and illustrated again Mark thanks so much
This was one of the Photography concepts that I never understood. Thanks to this snapfactory
Mark you really broke it down. Your videos are so informative and well put together bro.
@TheCodenameHSK
The flash that fires at the beginning of the exposure is for metering. It is called monitor pre-flash and happens after the mirror comes up, but before the shutter opens. The flash that fires at the end of the exposure is to make the image.
@Val Mirov - the first flash is before the front curtain is raised and allows the camera to meter the amount of flash that will be used before the rear curtain rises (2nd flash)
I love this technique, I really used it a lot and it gives you spectacular images! Very good tutorial !
What shutter speed do u use for this?
@@aiming2shoot that would depend on the efect you want to achieve and the iso settings. Best is to experiment a lot and then finish it in your photo edit program. I am sure that you will love the outcome, just go over the top with all settings, that will teach you the boundaries. Good luck & fun
Great demonstration Mark!
Great tutorial, can't wait to try it out! Thanks Mark.
Very nice Mark. Thanks and keep positing good stuff
Well done! Great content!
Mark, thanks sooooo much for sharing your genius. Amazing
really well explained best i've seen so far cheers
I bet all those cars think theyre getting a speeding ticket! lol
I bet he made a few cars crash
RED LIGHT camera = ticket, yep!!!
Mark this helped me so much, and I'm a boudoir photographer looking into some light painting, thanks so much!
WOW!!! unbeliebable!! have got to try this!!!!! thanks alot!! quick question!! this works with off camera flashes??? like with a trigger?? so i can use light modifiers?? if it does!! posibilies are huge!! thank you so much!!
Thank you sooooooo much! I'm in love with second curtain sync...
Thank you Mark & ADorama
excellent video. i want to take pictures with my canon 5D mark iii and i have a canon flash gun 580 exii what setting would you use so the action is still but not too blow out.
keep uo the good videos
Firts of all let me to congratulate you for all ur videos they are awesome. Have a question the normal flash thats in the camera can be synchronize to rear curtain and make this effects?
hi, i always watch your tips which perfect and understandable. bcoz you speak continue and perfect.. I understand all this episode.. could you tell on which mode we should use..?? If we do this on A..then what would be aperture seting ?? if we do on S..mode what would be shutter speed..? or what would be on P..? i understand here only about rear setting of flash and ISO 400.. mode setting you did not tell....hope you understand what i wanna know. best regards.
@snapfactory YOU ARE A GENIUS! you've just put my mind at ease with this, i'd been using 2nd sync but the flash that fired before was so confusing too me. so in essence, is that split second of exposure "ignored" by the camera as such and once the flash is over, then the photo begins, if you get me?
GREAT explanation, I am going to get the most of my 480EXII Canon flash. Beautiful model
Very cute, I mean helpful !!....I was wondering what effect rear curtain sync would have but never tried it. Is That the same as using the focal plane sync flash input on a film camera?
Thanks for the video. Are you suggestion that when you use flash, you should use rear curtain sync?
Awesomely presented, thank you!
Hi Mark,
Thanks for these amazing videos, but I wanted to to know what were the camera setings on the pics you took of brenda? also have they in any way been retouched? just because they look too good.
Thanks
thanks MARK for this educative video. please i will like to know the fnumber you used for this video?.
God bless you. Very effective explanation!
Thank you!
Wow I've been learning a lot from your videos. I'm going to be buying a canon 5D Mark ii in like two months
@ahlincoln you always would want to invest on the fast 2.8 lenses. If your looking for an all around cheap lens you can get a Tamron 17-50 2.8 it will allow you to shoot from wide landscapes to cool portraits and the 2nd lens that you may want to have is the sigma 70-200 2.8 this will allow you to take cool far portraits, macro, wild life and sports. Both are also great for night photography and is very versitile. hope this helps! =)
fantastic video
You are simply amazing, really helpfull video!
great explanation & tutorial!
What was your shutter speed when shooting Brenda? Also what would you recommend for shooting in a bar with little to no light?
Thanks
and awesome and very educational lesson that's clear to understand. thank you
It seems like 2nd/rear curtain sync is the best way to shoot every time. Are there any benefits to shooting flash photography without rear curtain sync? When is it a good time to not use it?
Tops! Thanks for a great video!
So is it possible to get your model razor sharp, or is there always going to be some element of blur? When I try doing this, the movement that happens before the flash at the rear curtain shows u in the photo, which you mentioned and said we could get away with...
awesome mark this explains a lot. thank you
Great tutorial! many thanks!
Can u apply this setting by off flash camera?
With canon TTL flash .. you can
But with Nikon speedlight you can't
Great as always..
Good stuff, Mark. But, how do you setup rear/2nd curtain sync when using PocketWizards? Do you have to hook them up to your laptop and program them?
that is a great video ... im a beginner ... can i know what is the shutter speed used ???
I think this is the pre-flash guaging the distance of the subject just before the shutter opens i.e. TTL metering.
Mark can you tell me what camera settings you would use on a Canon for rear curtain sync? Is this good to use for low lighting indoors for a party?
Always wondered what that icon on my speedlight was lol Thanks for explaining.
great video again! thanks
Thanks for video. It is clear. May I ask if thee second curtain sync shoot is possible in daylight using filter big stopper 10 stops darker.
I had too watch this video three times to understand how it worked exactly, but I have gotten some great shots by using this technique. Thanks.
So nice vdo Mark
Thanks! 😃
Thanks Mark sir, for explaining 2nd curtain Synk....
Please can you explain how to take multiple exposure and other topic is ev setting....
im sick of people who say that photgraphy is easy and just one button..
It's called marketing. People want to believe it.
You can do the same thing with an iPhone ... what's the big deal? ;)
@@sjbadalamente you just proofed its value by watching and commenting a video about dslrs instead of being somewhere taking pics with your iphone.
Great Video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Hi mark, I dont have a on camera flash only the pop up flash built in. My question, in the camera settings i have a setting that is called 2nd flash and when i take a picture it flashes once and then again right at the end..... Does this work the same way as you demonstarted in the video?
So for Canon users, the only way to achieve rear curtain sync is to use a Canon flash? Is there any way to do it in-camera with a third-party flash?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Mark, can I used my built in flash to be able to used a 2nd curtain sync on my Canon XS. Thanks for any reply you can give.
Thanks for this tutorial, I learned a lot.
Great video tutorial! '2nd curtain flash for dummies!'
Thank you Mark !
HI, i want to buy a lense for my dslr but not sure which one i should buy so that i can do different things with the same lense... would you please give me some advice
@snapfactory Many thanks Mark.
love your tutorial. I'll try it out. Thank you so much
I noticed the 2nd curtain the pic seems better underexposed where the 1st curtain over exposed the shot. Thanks for the examples.
You live in Phoenix 👏
Why does rear curting setting always fires two flashes? One at the start and the final one right before the 2nd curtin closes? Doesnt that kill the purpose of freeze at the end??
The first flash is to meter the exposure of the flash. It happens before the shutter opens. If you set your flash to manual mode (not TTL) the first flash won't fire.
@@MarkWallaceVideos actually if set to ttl it only fires the first flash when set at 2nd curtain. If set at 1st curtain and ttl the first flash wont fire. So what? It doesnt meter at 1st curtain? Im confused
Mark = genius
hi bro nice tutorial i have question the rear curtain sync is it perform on off flash using trigger ?
Great tip. How do you meter the subject? Usually at night it would be quite dark and if I have a slow shutter, it might produce too much light and camera shake wouldn't it?
+trinhk In this demo there are TWO exposures happening--background and flash. You only have to meter (expose) for the background. The TTL will meter the flash for you. You can adjust both exposures independently--background with exposure compensation, and flash with flash compensation.
Hey Mark, i've tried using second curtain sync, but in Tv mode, but for some reason the flash fires twice, once at the beginning and then at the end.
Am I doing something wrong?
PLEASE MARK...show us how to photograph the milky way with some foreground in the pic....either using stacking or whatever...as long as we dont have to buy expensive mounts.
I've noticed that if I shoot a shutter speed of over a sec, the subject begins to look faded, creating this "ghost" looking effect. Is there a way to shoot longer without this, or is the second curtain flash only effective up to a certain shutter speed?
Thanks alot! Keep em coming pls!
@championssportsbar look into a lens with aperture of 1.8 or less and shoot at about 1/50sec at 800 or 1600iso. i bought a nikon 35mm 1.8 received great night pictures without flash.
nice job flashing the drivers lol, good tutorial :D
"Frozen Brenda on top of Blurred Brenda" :-) Gotta love that explanation.
What are the settings for the rear curtain flash? Is this a long exposure? What is the minimum timing I need for a second curtain use? Thx
does it just work with an external flash? can I do that with my eos 60d without external as well?
OMG Now I finally understand EVERYTHING !!!!!
What are your camera setting, iso, shutter speed and aperture for the pic of Brenda @ 5:00 please?
+BooYaa69 ISO 400, f/3.2 in Aperture priority. Shutter speed is irrelevant.
+Marckymarc71 I am using rear sync flash and aperture priority mode still getting subject as blur don't know why.also rear sync is not available in manual I am using Nikon d3300
The flash should freeze the subject IF the flash is providing ALL the light that is falling on the subject. If the flash is only acting as fill-flash you will get some blur.
+Marckymarc71 thanks for quick reply. my settings are aperture priority, focus mode : single servo AF , AF area mode: single point AF, flash mode : slow rear still getting primary subject as blur
+Marckymarc71 I got it right this tym .thanks a lot
Any help in finding most affordable flash for T7i that can do High speed sync, Second curtain flash, and Ettl?
Is there a way I can do rear or second curtain sync with strobes?
Well that looked like a great way to piss off drivers. Good thinking, there.
Mark M you could be right
Great tutorial, thank you! :)
Glad it was helpful!
why are there two flashes going on in a rear curtain sync?
Great explanation :)
What shutter speed did you set??
Thank you so much! It really helped me
thanks Mark.
Hi Mark, I have a Sony a99 camera and the Sony HVL-F60M flash. Do you know if there's any way for me to use rear curtain sync?
wow that was a great tip !!!! ... Thanx.
thanks for the great video :)
