Can I Use Kratom to Detox Off Opioids?

  • Dr Peter Coleman, who is Board-certified in Addiction Medicine and in long-term recovery himself, discusses whether kratom might be a good way to detox off of opiates.
    -Safe, Comfortable Outpatient Detox
The Coleman Institute for Addiction Medicine has been a leading outpatient addiction treatment center since 1998. Our innovative withdrawal management programs, often referred to as The Coleman Method, have helped thousands of people free themselves from addiction to Alcohol, Opioids, and Benzodiazepines. Originally founded in Richmond, Virginia, our network has expanded to cover 14 cities across the US.
    -3 - 8 Day Opioid Detoxification Process
For short-acting opiates like oxycodone, most patients complete their detox and begin Naltrexone therapy within 5 days. Longer-acting opiates like Suboxone and Methadone typically take 8 days. Our standard opioid treatment package in Richmond, VA and Wellesley, MA includes the detox and 6 months of case management and Naltrexone therapy. As a non-addictive opioid blocker, Naltrexone dramatically reduces cravings so that patients can focus on their recovery. We have a 98% success rate for completing detoxification and starting Naltrexone therapy. During the detox, we work with patients and their families to develop an appropriate aftercare plan. We also offer a convenient, 3-day outpatient alcohol detox and a Rapid Benzodiazepine Detox.
    -Caring, Empathetic Environment
Dr. Peter Coleman understands first-hand the challenges our patients are facing due to his own personal struggle with the disease of addiction. He has been in long term recovery since 1984. Dr. Coleman has dedicated his career to treating addiction patients and creating a team and an environment conducive to long term recovery for his patients.

The reason why Kratom is not recommended is because pharmaceutical companies who created methadone suboxone will lose money to a natural herb.

There's not enough research on humans but it can be addictive and cause dependence. It can also cause seizures, coma and death.
I would agree with you if you said cannabis but Kratom is a whole different beast.
It seems now that everyone has gotten over how much of a miracle drug that is safer like cannabis is now that it's becoming more legalized, they are turning to some other 'alternative' drug without really looking into it. There isn't a miracle cure for opiate addiction or most heavy drugs, just the taper off slowly and eat and drink water and apple juice as best as you can.

And here's the most important part. Being hooked on kratom is cheap and safe. We got like 250 Americans dying everyday because of synthetic opioids. Kratom is an extremely cheap and relatively safe opioid. By "relatively safe"....I don't think it's hyperbole to say it's 1000x safer than fentanyl. Probably 100x safer than oxycodone.
When you try to take too much kratom in search of the euphoric effect of synthetic opioids....you never reach the euphoria. You just vomit out all the plant material. The margin for dosage error is clear. A crumb or two more of fentanyl can mean the difference between life and death. With kratom...the body is not even capable of ingesting the amounts needed for fatal overdose.
This difference alone cannot be understated if we are trying to address the epidemic of deaths amongst our loved ones.

Poison ivy is also natural, but that doesn't make it good to ingest. A big part of the issue in the US is that no one can be sure what is actually in the substance they are purchasing under that name. Formulations vary widely and there isn't any regulatory oversight. Many of the side effects reported by the users in the US are unheard of in Southeast Asia, where someone might be able to walk directly into the forest and harvest some kratom directly, with certainty about what they are getting. We definitely see patients who tried to use kratom to detox off opioids and failed, getting hooked on kratom in the process. Not claiming that is everyone, but that is what we see.

    • @brownrusselredeemedbyblood
      @brownrusselredeemedbyblood 2 ปีที่แล้ว

Poison ivy isn’t medicine. There’s thousands of reputable companies that extensively test the kratom to insure its 100 percent organic. If you,and the FDA would actually do some tea studies into the compounds found in this plant, you could actually help people with addiction, rather than cause the problems in the first place. Choosing DRUGS such as methadone, suboxen,Librium, and all the other harmful, and deadly synthetics are dangerous. The pharmaceutical companies cause the problem, present the solution, and get rich the whole ride, while people die. Meanwhile people like you pretend to know what’s best for everyone. Courtney, I actually thought about your question for any entire night. It kept me awake, although that's totally normal for me. What I have learned throughout my journey, after almost 2 decades of pure hell on earth struggling with opioid dependency & addiction is that our best hope for this nightmare epidemic we call the opioid crisis is that harm reduction is our absolute best & really our only way to save our children & the people who are fighting for their lives, which is exactly what we are doing. Harm reduction is never a bad thing. I would be on synthetic or semi-synthetic drugs/substances for the rest of my life because I have a real reason I was on those medications. I have Stage 4 Endometriosis & Ehlers Danlos Syndrome & I am ALWAYS in pain. Kratom allows me to be a productive member of society. Kratom is not for everyone, but after watching first hand how much of a nightmare it is to come off methadone and suboxone for people I know, I am grateful I never went that route. I had PAWS, or Post Acute Withdrawal Syndrome for 20 solid months. PAWS is the # 1 reason people relapse. I thought it was all bs when I learned about Kratom, but it immediately worked. I was immediately okay. I went out of state on a 10 day vacation for the first time in years with my family. People kept telling me to keep doing whatever it was I was doing and told me so many times how much I was changing for the better. Harm reduction is everything. I get C19 on December 26 & I was really, really sick (although a million times better then my partner & it's probably due to Kratom having such amazing immune boosting properties) & I was prescribed Codeine cough medicine for the 1st time in over 6 years & I used it because the coughing was insanely painful & nothing else stopped it. When that codeine hit, I remembered why I originally loved it so much, but when I was better & no longer needed that cough medicine, I had zero craving for it. It was pretty amazing. I could not have stopped like that before Kratom. It gave me my normal life back.

Kratom is the easiest detox and here's why, if you are manually making your own capsules you will reach a point where you find the amount that takes the withdrawal away, and that will be a lot of capsules that you will be putting together maybe twenty or thirty a day or twice a day at first, but you're not getting a buzz off of it so what's the reason for making so many? Eventually you will start saving time and be tired of putting so many together and you will only take twenty one day and then the next day you'll only do 15 and then 10 and so on. My scale is not right but that's how it works you will get tired of putting together all of these capsules every day so you will start taking less on your own and get yourself off of it completely

He says this type of shut but faults to mention that it’ll be the same way for suboxone … the shit they’d give you to get off opioids … suboxone has an actual high and people get addicted to that more … depending on how long you been doing opioid … bro you take the kratom for a week … that way mostly if not all of the withdraws that are painful are gone and all the other small effects like maybe a fog feeling , sneezing and slight more cold than usual will be around but guess what ?? Those are more than bearable to deal with … now if you were in fentanyl which is very strong you probably wanna take em for 2 weeks to a month because even though the withdraws that are painful will be gone the other effects will still be in high form and will annoy you so bad you won’t be able to do anything … take it slow measure your body .. if you take Kratom and been taking it for a week one day after you hit 7 days you need to wait about 24 hours or however long it takes to wear off out of your. Body and see how you feel … if you don’t like the way you feel after 48 hours go and take kratom for one more week and try it out again…. Those who wanna be off and not dependent on anything would follow those steps because once I’ve got over the withdraw stage I’m not looking to keep taking anything … even if I still have slight very slight chills and sneezing … I’ll deal w it .. slot of those symptoms last longer than others depending on the drug and how long you used it … so please for the people wanting to get off … if you been on drugs for years w out stopping once so not expect just because the painful part of withdrawals are gone that the symptoms of not feeling like yourself sre still lingering around …. Remind yourself the high is never worth the low and that you did them for “X amount of time. “ it’ll take time getting used to being sober and to feel like yourself once again but it’s around the corner just take it a day at a time

Kratom is nothing like heroin. The rehab industry is out biggest opposition in the fight to keep Kratom legal. Harm reduction is a good thing and most of the people in the rehab industry only care about keeping their money coming in and they know Kratom is a major threat to that. If you truly cared about the patients in rehabilitation, you would not be against something that is so beneficial. I tried to paste the letter to the comments my Mother wrote regarding my recovery from opioids, but for some reason I cannot. Kratom is nothing at all like heroin and the majority of people who DID come off opioids and other drugs and then suddenly stop Kratom too soon experience PAWS from their drug use prior to Kratom. For the first 2 years after I stopped my 16 years opioid use, I would go into withdrawals. They were not fun. Right at the 20 month mark, I abruptly stopped Kratom due to a family emergency and I had already started to notice that I was going longer in between Kratom servings during the day and it was getting easier, although I was still consuming quite a bit daily. The day I stopped suddenly, I was 100 percent fine. Absolutely fine. I stopped cold turkey and decided to just not consume any Kratom for a few weeks. I did start again when my family confronted me about how crabby I was getting because all my ailments pain wise were resurfacing. I have stage 4 endometriosis & EDS and am in pain almost 100% of the time. It makes me grouchy. I was in pain management for a good reason. I am so grateful I am out of pain management and that I never had to go on suboxone treatment. I have seen first hand how severe and long the withdrawal from that is. More than once. And I am NOT against suboxone or methadone if it's helping someone. Because harm reduction is always a good thing. Please do actual research, sir. Please, please listen to the scientists who have studied Kratom for years, sometimes for decades and do not believe banning Kratom will do anything other than cause a much, much worse opioid crisis. @@williamwinn948 yes, a few times. And my family is trying to plan a trip to Sweden next year, so I will have to stop as it is illegal there. I usually taper down. I have also stopped cold turkey a couple of times. I had some issues with dehydration and anxiety in November of 2020 and again in January 2021 and stopped suddenly and it wasn't exactly pleasant, but it wasn't just from stopping Kratom. The part that really sucks for me is the brain fog. It's the most pronounced issue I have when I stop and I try to make sure I am off work when I stop because it gets overwhelming. There is a vast difference between detoxing and withdrawing.
For lack of a better term, the human brain catches on to the affects of Kratom very quickly.
Ive never met anybody who could gain a favorable reaction after 3 times use. without taking a substantial break from it.. The first time is the best you will ever get from it. Even after two month break it still never works the same. and taking more wont help. Yes it greatly reduces the symptoms of opiate withdrawal, but only once or twice. Then a long break is needed.

Glad to hear you are making progress. FWIW tests of red vein vs green vein kratom show no chemical differences. Just like many people drink alcohol and only some get addicted, undoubtedly people react differently to kratom. One of the biggest concerns with kratom is that, sold as an unregulated supplement, there isn’t certainty around consistency, potency, and ingredients, which have been shown to vary widely in the products sold in the US. We treat numerous patients who tried to use kratom to detox off of other opiates but became dependent on kratom. Best wishes!

Please, if you think you need it and it helps, stop using it ASAP. I didn’t and now, years later, I’m taking WAY to much and have withdrawals similar to those of subutex. I believed everyone who said it would be like quitting a caffeine habit. It’s not, it’s much worse! It’s very similar to the subutex withdrawals, just not as intense. Looking back, I wish I’d only taken it for a couple of weeks, possibly a month and deal with the lingering anxiety and occasional restless nights. I’m in a world of hurt right now and starting a new job in a few days. I’m going to taper and try to quit completely over the Christmas break.
I know I’m just a random stranger on TH-cam but please, stop using as soon as possible. You will save yourself from another debilitating addiction.
My beliefs, kratom can be an extremely useful tool to detox if used wisely and sparingly. But just like most other things, it can be dangerously abused.

I tried Kratom when I last relapsed in 2015. It did not make the withdrawals from IV heroin any less miserable or intense. It was also expensive, and tasted terrible.
It did give me a bit of energy, kinda like an “extreme” cup of coffee, but it didn’t really do anything to stop the heroin withdrawals. Kratom is not an opioid, that needs to be made clear.
Eventually I came to like the energy boost and started using it daily, and then multiple times a day.
About two weeks in, I realized I was taking it too much and spending too much money on it, and stopped.
I couldn’t really tell if the withdrawals afterwords were directly from Kratom or if they were still from the insane $400 a day IV heroin use still, but it definitely wasn’t fun.
Maybe if someone is just using smaller doses of pharmaceutical opioids, Kratom could perhaps help them taper. But if you’re an IV heroin user and your tolerance is so high that even buprenorphine won’t take the withdrawals away, don’t waste your time or money on Kratom.

Nick, I was up to around 300 10mg Norco in a week when I jumped straight to Kratom. Did you try more than 1 kind? And you can wrap the powder in oblate disks or cap it (caps are less effective, but some people can't take it any other way) & you have to rotate strains/vendors to avoid tolerance. It took some hard work and time to find what worked for me. You're right, it doesn't stop all the withdrawal symptoms, but it helps a lot.

@@daniellebetz7175 I tried multiple kinds, extracts, blends, tried putting the powder in caps from a vitamin shop, tried pressed pills from Jackson Kratom, etc. They all basically did the same thing, which was a minor energy boost, but didn't do anything at all for any kind of withdrawal symptoms. Nothing at all to take away the lightning under the skin feeling, or the constant pain and anxiety, nausea and diarrhea. If anything the additional energy boost, however minor, caused even more anxiety during withdrawals and more nausea. However...I don't support the recreational use of kratom. It's more addictive than cocaine. The withdrawals from kratom will last much longer than withdrawals from cocaine or ecstacy. Unfortunately many patients come to us for help getting off kratom after they have used it to try to self-detox off of opioids, and ended up getting hooked on kratom. The kratom sold in the US comes in varying forms, with unclear additives, and unvalidated potencies. It is less reliable than evidence-based, FDA-approved forms of Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) like naltrexone, buprenorphine, and methadone which are manufactured, tested, and sold with transparent, accurate labeling.

I have always said that before anyone gets a license to prescribe opioids ,that they should have to take them to dependency and then go through withdrawals, otherwise there will never be a humane treatment for getting people off opioids and they actually have a method but it’s kept hush hush. You have to have money and they can put you under and flush your system while you’re unconscious and when you wake up, you have already gone through withdrawals at a highly accelerated rate using antagonists and you’re given like a mild dose of benzodiazepines for a week or two to help restart your circadian rhythm. It’s all about the benjamins and it’s only successful for people that got hooked because of failed surgeries and the only treatment was pain treatment until they could safely go back in . If I could afford it, I would be on a plane to Colorado (that’s where the clinic is) and go through the process so I can finally move on instead of this slow, torturous, painful and depressing period for longer than most can imagine. I am seriously considering kratom since I have been lowering my dose and I can get to 20 mgs per day without too much pain but from there it’s just pure torture. And I don’t want another chemical shackle like suboxone either. I will deal with my physical pain myself, without opioids because it’s the opioids that are the source of almost all of my health issues excepting the physical ones it’s prescribed for. I just think I can treat it without opioids and that’s my goal.

If your using daily, 3-6 times a day to keep from being sick.
Then Kratom can help some people and doesn't do much of anything for those who are really, really using. Because their tolerance is already so high.
I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY recommend NOT getting on methadone or suboxone or subs, your trading heroin, which has a a very short half-life, for "medications" that have a half-life of 30 days or more, depending on your metabolism, which means you WILL eventually have to withdraw from those medications and pain is much worse and much longer.
While heroin withdrawal does suck, methadone withdrawal will literally make you cry for several days.
The best thing I can tell someone who's addicted to heroin is to just try your best to kick with kratom, GABA, Melatonin, Magnesium and zinc filled drinks like Biolyte IV in a bottle, water and what helps the most is sunlight, so your body produces Vitamin D naturally, hot showers and the one thing that will make you feel better faster is to get up and be active, if you lay in bed, your mind will CONSTANTLY race and you will dwell on using again and because you dwell, your pain will be much worse, if your actively doing something and at the same time listen to podcasts, your mind will relax much, much easier, you will sweat, you will have chills, but you'll find that they come and go and if you can just get through the day 30mins to 1hr at a time, you'll find the pain and symptoms come and go and it helps you learn that you can get through it
