    This finally made Revolver listenable in stereo. They’ve done a great job on this. For me it’s probably the most essential of all the new stereo remixes.

    • @Jason-lx3zu
      @Jason-lx3zu ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Totally agree. Unlike prior releases I not only have zero complaints but had major goosebumps listening to the stereo mix. It's like a brand new album and I'm very pleased

    • @MichaelHattem
      @MichaelHattem ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@Jason-lx3zu They smartly mixed it in a very straight, logical way, in terms of panning, and the frequency spectrum is much more even giving individual instruments more definition especially the bass. It really is like a new album. Eleanor Rigby is a revelation and all of the Lennon songs rock much more because of the fuller sonic landscape.

    • @MichaelHattem
      @MichaelHattem ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@WeShouldAllDoHeroin Compared to the original stereo mixes? Or the mono mix? All of the original stereo mixes were afterthoughts for the band and Martin. They’re unlistenable because of the panning. Then again because the original stereo mixes were what what were released on the first CDs I guess younger people have some nostalgic attachment or at least a sense of familiarity. I only ever listen to the mono mixes and actually enjoyed these stereo mixes but I’ve seen others say similar things as you.

      @@MichaelHattem compared to either tbh, I agree with the view that giles is essentially ‘changing the songs’ and the listening experience which is fine with me when done properly. I especially love what was done with eleanor rigby and I love the song even more as a result. But she said she said is just so weird to me, it’s too different yk? I feel like he made the guitars too clear and spacious and so then it just sounds worse as a result compared to the guitars kinda muddying together.

    I already have the 2014 mono version of the album, and it sounds great, as does the new mix. That being said, I don’t think I’m going to be picking this up physically, but it’s good to finally have a digital version of Revolver that doesn’t sound like garbage

    I like how they have the opening on the left for these last two box sets. This way you don't have to pull out the entire box to pick out one record. It looks a little funny, but it's much more practical.

    • @continentalgin
      @continentalgin ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's a bit humorous how Apple/EMI/Parlophone will seem to maximize their Beatles product lines, but at the same time miss out on some potentially very profitable stuff. For example, 5.1 surround mixes on Blu-ray would be nice. They did it for the IMAX Get Back, but you can't get it on physical media for your home. Omissions like that are odd. Also, are they skipping over a big box treatment of Magical Mystery Tour? If so, why? They could do Giles & Sam remixes of the MMT material and release both the UK EP version and the American LP version in one big box, with both mono and stereo products included. I would buy it!

      I AGREE!! Not everyone can afford the whole package and most of us already have the albums, even if they are only the original Lps released in the '60s. But the BOOKS are not like anything we already have. I think too, it would be a missed opportunity for additional revenue by just selling the books, over and above the box set.

    Great point regarding those barbed sharp and rather cheap edges on new pressings including this one! New mix and box set are gorgeous. Giles Martin keeps the integrity of all the songs, but removes the Hard Panning, Bad Edits, and adds missing/low sound effects. It isn’t perfect, but the good outweighs the bad. Overall the sound is amazing. These are mono recordings and the original stereo wasn’t how the Beatles intended for you to listen to their music. Also, the younger generations listen to most of their music on earbuds/headphones so these new mixes are necessary to move the music forward for years to come.

    This is just my opinion, but I think that for a BEATLES super deluxe box set, presentation should be a bit higher on the priority list, as well as some extra goodies to make the purchase more worthwhile. For example - consider the newly released Lou Reed Words and Music Super Deluxe 2lp. It's not even a box set but it's presentation is glorious - everything has a slot/place. Replica memorabilia... a CD, 45 and cut at 45 rpm. At almost 200 dollars, I feel they could have offered slightly more - the widely wished for blu ray discs or some footage on a DVD... Etc etc. Just think presentation could go a long way.

    Thanks for the video, waiting for my box to arrive. But as someone who has the 2014 mono LP I think the choice to not go w. flap back construction on the new mono LP is a good one, as the flaps result in huge white borders surrounding a cool black and white photo! I prefer the solid black look. SGT Pepper managed to colour-match the flaps to the gatefold album artwork. Also, on the remix artwork, would have preferred to see the Emitex ad on the back cover gone; you’d have to scour eBay to buy that that record cleaning cloth

But if the remixes I've heard on TH-cam are any indication, my money was well spent. Rumor has it that the 2022 mono surpasses the 2014 pressing. Can't wait to find out for myself! If they had made an insert in the book to hold the 45 then that would mean they would have to have made a separate book for the vinyl and cd box sets. It appears that unlike the Let it Be release, the size of the box for both sets were made exactly the same in order to hold an identical book for each set, most likely a way to save more money this time around.

    I wonder if your thing about the edges is more a luck of the draw sort of thing than anything to do with the pressing plant. I felt most of my discs and while disc 2 of the sessions has an edge on it disc one is a bit better, the Stereo is pretty smooth and the Mono isn't too bad either. My stereo mix of Abbey Road has a pretty rough edge as well though the one which I got as a stand-alone is smoother. None of the Let it Be discs felt particularly sharp but they did have a slight edge to them. Though one thing about my Revolver box is that one side of the Sessions disc one has a slight warp to it and I wonder if that is because of the 45 that is stuffed into the middle of the gatefold.

  • @lifeisagifthorse

    Your "nitpicking" is my favorite part of your reviews. Besides, after making an investment in a "super deluxe" product, expectations should be met--if not surpassed...I had the same reaction to the same track-after-track listing. I would have preferred that the alternate takes ran in the same order as the original track listings, however, as you noted, it does make it easier to compare the differences...I also agree with the folded outer sleeve. Not only does it keep the look of the original, but when the fold is on the outside, the paper sleeve of the LP has nothing to tear or catch on, and the outer sleeve seems less prone to splitting...And yes, not having a definite placeholder for the 45 guarantees that it will be the first item separated (or damaged) from the set...I did notice that a Lennon demo for "She Said, She Said," where he sings: "He said" instead, is missing. Since it was a tripping Peter Fonda who inspired this Beatles song by going around in Lennon's earshot repeating, "I know what it's like to be dead." This annoyed Lennon at the time but eventually inspired this song (a fact that Peter Fonda was always proud of)...I expected more isolated tracks--particularly vocals. Yet with the demos and alternate takes that have not been bootlegged, and the new mixes of these classic songs, there is much here to celebrate & enjoy...I can't wait to hear your take on this unexpected release that seemed to catch everyone off guard, but in plenty of time for Christmas!

    Thanks so much for this. I have Revolver on CD, a version I bought at least 20 years ago. I am into vinyl again, so I would buy the new stereo mix and have the book as well, which looks great. I don't know if you can buy that combination. As for the quality of the pressings, and I know I am going off-topic, I bought the 2018 remix of Animals a few weeks ago and that was really sharp and rough around the edges, and it was pressed in the Netherlands. I hope the Beatles vinyl LPs don't pop, crack and jump like (allegedly) 40% of the PF album.

    I'd like to agree with the tracklisting: I believe with the White Album and Abbey Road remixes the outtakes I believe are in order of when they were recorded, so it's weird to have them revert to the Sgt. Pepper's remix outtake tracklisting when the songs were first recorded.

    The reason it’s “backwards” is, it’s designed to be like a vintage book and honored like a book!

    I wonder if the sharp edges has something to do with the razors the machines spin the record along to spin the excess material off. Maybe the razors haven’t been changed in a very long time, or maybe they aren’t shaped the same as they used to be. I have a few modern records with nice smooth edges, but all my vintage records have round, smooth edges.

    I'm curious if anyone else had a scratched vinyl when their's arrived. When my copy arrived the Paperback Writer/Rain disc had a long scratch across the stereo side going all the way from the label through the vinyl. It even messed up the ink on the label. I don't know how it ever got past quality control. I also had the same issue with my Let It Be box set. The vinyl was warped. I must have bad luck or something.
    Oh, and another complaint, lol. I bought this set from the Beatles website, not from Amazon, and they still haven't responded to my return request, five days later. I definitely won't ever buy from them again.

    I'm not kidding, but sometimes I use sandpaper on the edges before I clean the record. so that inner sleeves do not damage.

  • @ianz9916
    @ianz9916 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of my inner sleeves was already split when I opened the box due to those sharp edges. The inners are very poor quality and don't fit back into the sleeves very well, especially on the gatefold. The covers also seem poorly made and, when not in the box, have a noticeable bow. This probably is part of the reason the inners don't fit in the sleeves very well, but the poly lined inner is not particularly well secured either.

    (His answer): "I don't know. It's no big deal. It's par for the course." From looking at this, I get the impression that the albums and the format wasn't to his expectations. However, what I think he enjoyed was the book.

    I've got my trusty 2014 Beatles in Mono box and that is good enough for me. I personally couldn't see how or why anyone would spend the type of $$ it takes to buy any of these super deluxe versions of Revolver or the other one's that have been released. I love Revolver but have always giving the very slight edge to Rubber Soul as being a bit better. Having said that, as always, an intriguing video from an excellent channel! Well done!

    I checked it out on streaming. Pretty cool, but I have so many albums on my wishlist right now that I'm not going to buy this. My go tos are a 70s Japanese pressing for stereo and the 2014 mono. I also think anywhere above $125 is milking the fans, most of whom already own this album. I have this on cd at least 3 times, a bunch of bootleg cdrs of the sessions and about 4 vinyl pressings already so I'm maybe a little bit peeved that they want so much for this - even though I do want it and will probably buy it if I see it for what I saw Let It Be on sale for.

    I can see where your coming from! Having grown up in the 50s and 60s, albums from back then had great quality control. The edges of the album were were always smooth, the hole in the center was always on dead center and most all were not warped like many LPs are today. Today when I buy a new album, most are 180 grams, I'd say maybe 1 out of 5 albums I buy today are defective in some way. Most have some warp to them, on way too many albums the hole in the center is off center and/or the label on the vinyl is not centered on the album either. Also like you pointed out, the edges on the LPs are is not finished or smooth way too often. The only albums I've bought in the last couple years or so that were as close to perfect as physically possible were the new Jimi Hendrix studio album releases on 180gr vinyl put out by the Jimi Hendrix estate, "Are You Experienced", "Axis Bold As Love" and "Electric Lady Land". The vinyl albums on these and the packaging are beautiful, perfect. About the cleanest and prettiest albums covers I've seen made today, stunning in it quality and quiet, unwrapped vinyl, plus the sound quality on these LPs are better than the originals IMHO. In fact the "Are You Experienced" LP put out by the Hendrix estate on 180gr vinyl is every bit as good as the one put out by Acoustic Sounds, I got both copies and I literally can't tell the difference in sound quality, none! One was $15.00 and one was $125.00 and both were 100% quite when played. Anyways, love your channel, oh my friend growing up had a fireplace in his house that the same brick layout that you have in your studio or your living room. Good call!

    I'm really surprised that hardly any of the TH-camr, which introduce this new record Revolver, talk about the elephant in the room and this is the incredible price. 190$ is totally exaggerated and pure rip-off for me. The white album Delux with 4 discs has cost 70$, which makes 17$ per disc and was completely ok. Now you pay almost 50$ per disc at Revolver just for a bigger box, a 7 inch and a book. Not justified.

    15:56 - This is what annoys me with the book. Great black and white session photos, which were most likely taken in black and white - but these photos were taken in color and used in some countries as photos on 45's and EP's so why not use color prints?

    Watching @parlogramauctions unboxing this it turns out that none of the vinyl discs is 180g! It varies between 164g-178g (if I remember correctly).
    Worth mentioning since it said 180g on the hype sticker 🤔
    And off course I baught both the vinyl box set and the CD box set… 🙈 💵
