At Feb 2009, wife and I had US$ -138K due to student loans and car loans. Today we have 2.5M invested, with homes and cars already paid for. Once we determine what kind of life style we pursue, it just matter of time. As family of 4, we set a budget of $40K per year, all the extra money we earned just become tools that we invest to make life easier for future.
Agree!! this just happened to me. I was so fixated on saving and investing that I was losing track of all of these other things in my day to day. + is was really having a toll on my mental health and making me even more emotional which is a no no when investing.
Currently I'm just being smart and frugal with my money, I'm in the green 47% over the last 15 months and l've accumulated over $700K in pure profits from DCA’ing into stocks, ETFs, dividends and futures. However I’ve been in the red for a month now. I work hard for my money, so investing is making me a nervous sad wreck. I don’t know if I should sell everything, sit and just wait.
Nobody knows anything you need to create your own process, manage risk and stick to the plan, through thick or thin while also continuously learning from mistakes and improving.
@@carolynrose1816 I agree, that's the more reason I prefer my day to day invt decisions being guided by a fin-advisor, seeing that their entire skillset is built around going long and short at the same time both employing risk for its asymmetrical upside and laying off risk as a hedge against the inevitable downward turns, coupled with the exclusive information/analysis they have, it's near impossible to not out-perform, been using a fin-advisor for over 2years+ and I've netted over 2.8million.
@@viewfromthehighchairr I actually subscribed for a few trading courses but it didn't help much, been getting suggestions to use a proper financial advisor, how did you go about touching base with your coach?

I really enjoy your calm vibe and how you look at money. Couldn't agree more about monetary value = time value. I'm on the early days of my own journey and hearing you say 4 years rather than 4 weeks gives me quite a lot of comfort and confidence in seeing this through over the long haul. Because as you say, it's really not that long in the grand scheme of things! Big respect for being so savy so early on in life!
I’m so glad I found this channel! Steve is so articulate and thinks outside the box, his vids really get me thinking I might have a hard time saving 100k considering I only work about 14 hrs a week. I might have to bite the bullet and increase my hours so I can save up
The decision to invest is an acknowledgement that it comes with certain risks. Not all investments will do well and some may lose money. However, without risk, there would be no opportunity to potentially earn the higher returns that can help you grow your wealth.
To manage investment risk, consider maintaining a broad diversification of your investments that reflects your personal risk tolerance, time horizon, and the nature of your financial goal.
Remember, diversification is an approach to help manage investment risk. It does not eliminate the risk of loss if security prices decline. Because investing can be complicated, consider working with a financial professional to help guide you on your wealth-building journey.
Can't agree more. I want to make money so I don't have to worry about making money so I can do what I want regardless of financial benefit. I don't want the need to make money corrupt what I want to do or how I want to do it.
You know the thing that makes it difficult for me to save is that I wait 2+ weeks to get paid from my job, then when I finally do, I have all of these bills to pay at once. Then with my extra money I feel more tempted to spend money on things because I waited so long to get paid and the idea of doing nothing but sitting in my home just to wait two more weeks to get paid to then pay my bills then sit at home and do nothing.. and have that repeat forever doesn’t sound as appealing. If anyone has suggestions I’m really open for it because I do truly want to be better at spending/saving money
Try getting paid once a month, that's the norm in the UK. Best advice I have is find things that occupy your time that either make you more money (sidehustles or learning to get you a promotion at work) or don't cost you much money. For example I work 5 days a week and then in the evenings I spend most of my time in my home gym then cook and maybe play a video game and the day is done. Repeat x5 and then you can do more what you want at the weekend but keep on top of spending. Depends what you like to do, I enjoy walking, exercise and visiting friends and family (all pretty inexpensive).
I'm not sure how to say I've saved, because all of mine aren't completely liquid. So it's hard to know if that's technically "saved" or just "invested". If we don't care about differentiating, then I'd say it took me slightly over 2 years to go from 8k to 100k. Debt was the only thing slowing me down, but I was able to pay that down and imvest/save at the same time. I'm REALLY hungry and motivated and believe/hope that I can be at my first million in 7 years from now.
@@stephgonzalesc Well, there are several contributing factors. The biggest one is probably savings rate though. My salary during the time, on average, has been around 59k, which is right around the average US income. However, my spending has only been around 23k a year. Very lean. So, I've saved very aggressively, as much as I can. I've contributed to my job's Roth 401k and just started maxing it out 8 months ago. They give me 5% when I put in 10%. That helps. I opened a Roth IRA towards the end of last year, maxed it out and have already maxed it out for this year. Crypto has played a small roll as well, but it's not like I had added a ton or took some crazy risk on some new coin. I only put in 5,500 total into a mix of ETH and XLM. I've made a 250% return on that so far. And lastly, I've busted my butt with my side hustle. I've been doing it for a little over 2 years now, but I STILL haven't paid myself yet. All money is being invested back into it, so my growrh can be aggressive. Next month I calculated I should probably be able to start paying myself 2,500 a month through it, which will start to put me over that 100k edge in just over that 2 year mark from when I started saving aggressively. This was rather long, but I hope this answer satisfied you. I'm personally trying to document my growth here on TH-cam, to show people how I'm doing it, along the way. I'm not very good with my scheduling (😅), but I wanted to get a start last year, because I feel like it will be more interesting to show me when I first started out. It wouldn't be as interesting, I feel, if in 6-8 years or so, I start documenting, but I'm already at that 1 million mark, with no real context or body behind it.
Congrats on the milestone! A good reminder that you don't need to hit a milestone to go after doing the work you enjoy. Re: money and happiness, I agree. Money is just a catalyst.
Totally agree with money being a motivation now, so it doesn’t have to be later. I am obsessed with saving and maximizing my corporate income now, so in my late thirties I can just volunteer on a sheep farm and live a simple, hard-working life and never have to think about money again. Just got a raise today, plugged it into my F.I.R.E. calculator and realized “Wow, I just negotiated 2 years of my life back.”
I was expecting spreadsheets and numbers. To see this as more of the psychological side of saving the first 100k is very interesting and inspiring. Thanks for the great content.

These are very valuable rules for anybody who wants to get rich. Unfortunately, most people who will watch this video will not really be able to apply the principles. We may not want to admit, but as Warren Buffett once said, invsting is like any other profession-- it requires a certain level of expertise. No surprise that some people are losing a lot of moneyy in the bear market, while others are making hundreds of thousands in profiit. I just don't know how they do it. I have about $109k now to put in the market.
Understanding personal finances and inveesting will most likely lead to greater financial independence. By being knowledgeable about money and investing, individuals can make informed decisions about how to save, spend, and inveest their money. I know someone who made over $350k in this recession influenced market, but to the best of my knowledge, it was through a financiial advisr.
@@gagnepaingilly Yeah, financiial advisors could make a lot of difference, particularly in a market such as this. Stocks are pretty unstable at the moment, but if you do the right math, you should be just fine. Bloomberg and other finance media have been recording cases of folks gaining over 250k just in a matter of weeks/couple months, so I think there are a lot of wealth transfer in this downtime if you know where to look. I have been using an FA since 2019, and I return at least $21k ROI, and this does not include capital gain.

For anyone struggling to save money, force yourself to do it. Set up automatic deposits to a savings account. Take what your current paycheck is, subtract a significant (but reasonable) amount, like say $200-500, and force yourself to live off your "new" paycheck. It's amazing how you'll learn to adapt, and it will force you to sit down and really prioritize what expenses are really worth it and which ones aren't.

Was there a tipping point for you in terms of income or did you just dive in?
when i got out of school, i never understood how to save up for financial freedom. I never thought about it, and I was broke trying to figure out life out of school. 10 years passed, and I unknowingly saved up $100k. Half of which is currently in a savings account (probably could use some rethinking as the yield is low), and other half is for 3 things. They are emergency situations, paying daily/month needs, and most recently(~1 month ago) my dividend brokerage account. I still feel broke even with my first milestone of financial freedom.

Accumulating the first $100k took me 15 years. The second $100k an additional 8 years. Each additional $100k takes less time. Compounded growth is a winner!

Congratulations. I am 24 right now and I’m sitting at right over 40k I can’t wait to hit the 100k mark! Unfortunately I am returning to school so my journey will be quite slow till I am about 27! 125k by 30 though let’s get it!
Been working since I was 13 years old. Mom drilled into my head how important it is to save my money. Now I’m 28 and I have 2 rental properties and a house my wife and son live in. Hoping that within 3-5 years I can reach financial independence and finally quit my job. Definitely a long journey but don’t get discouraged, it’s not a race what counts is crossing the finish line.
I look at each milestone as another race against the hedonic treadmill. I am sure that as I look beyond FI I will continue to set certain goals. I get inspired by cases of FI in videos like this. Quite honestly knowing that I can afford to support myself without a job offers all the peace of mind and motivation to pursue it. Perhaps after, it will become the excuse of why I should upgrade my living standards, knowing that what has been and continues to be invested can grow and build over time to support it.
Wow, lightbulb moment. I always look at the number when we would be financial independent and it’s so daunting. I’m going to break it up so it’s more manageable. 10k in investment accounts, here we come!
Wow, you can buy a lot of McDoubles with $100k! Now all we gotta figure out is how to store them so that we can hold McDoubles long term against inflation xD

Once we determine what kind of life style we pursue, it just matter of time. As family of 4, we set a budget of $40K per year, all the extra money we earned just become tools that we invest to make life easier for future.
Such a great video! I sent this to my siblings. Great advice and I love that final quote. Thank you!!!
Agree!! this just happened to me.

"Money is a representation of frozen time." Then you buy stuff with that money. Then you're house is full of stuff you don't want. 😄
Steve is so articulate and thinks outside the box, his vids really get me thinking
I might have a hard time saving 100k considering I only work about 14 hrs a week. I might have to bite the bullet and increase my hours so I can save up
Investing in the stock market is the most common way for beginners to gain investment experience.
Unlike consuming, investing earmarks money for the future, hoping that it will grow over time.
I have been trading with TAMARA DIANE HAGAN and her strategy works perfectly for me as a beginner.
Wow, how did you do it so fast?!
What camera do you use?
Thanks
very proud to say at 25 just reached my 100k goal 😭🙏🙏
i forgot to ask, when you save 100000, does that include mostly retirement like 401k or is it liquid like stocks?
When you save 100bands and become a philosopher 😂
"Money is the motivation so it doesn't have to be" - that hit different, well said
Congrats on the milestone! A good reminder that you don't need to hit a milestone to go after doing the work you enjoy. Re: money and happiness, I agree. Money is just a catalyst.
Thanks man! Yeah, catalyst is a great way to put it
Totally agree with money being a motivation now, so it doesn’t have to be later.
Seriously. I don't even know what to be in awe of most: your honesty, the wisdom, the video editing?! Great work! 👍
I was expecting spreadsheets and numbers. To see this as more of the psychological side of saving the first 100k is very interesting and inspiring. Thanks for the great content.

In which city was it shot? Perhaps someone know?
To answer your question - it does resonate with me. It's good to know someone like you exist in youtube.
@@baileymclean8186 Is there any chance you could recommend who you work with? I've wanted to make this switch for a very long time now, but I've been very hesitant about. I'll appreciate any recommendation.
@@svengrot7943 I really don't like making such recommendations, because everybody's situation is unique. But there are many freelance wealth managers you could check out.
That´s why I follow you! Passive income and a slow path that you are going thru. Thanks for your words and videos.

Great video. To contrast, I was pretty thrilled to hit six figures - but the feeling was fleeting. After hitting the first $100k I relaxed a bit and am enjoying life (though I am naturally frugal). Interesting to find this video because now I’m at the nexus of quitting to focus on growing my side hustles into full businesses.

I like this guy. Its refreshing to hear a young person speak about finances with a healthy long-term perspective. Spot on.
Accumulating the first $100k took me 15 years. The second $100k an additional 8 years. Each additional $100k takes less time. Compounded growth is a winner!
