Depeche mode made a bunch of brilliant songs, but this one has something more. It's just a masterpiece. Like sitting in a deck chair on top of a mountain admiring the surrounding beauty
Over the years i grew to like It's No Good a bit more, i dunno why...maybe it's because i listened to Enjoy The Silence So Much, that it doesn't feel that special to me anymore...whatever that is, It's No Good is my new best song from them now! And it's most recent discovery (i wasn't that much informed about majority of their late 90's stuff...), so i'm jamming like theere is no tomorrow! Haha Both versions vocal and instrumental are great!...
This is an anthem! It always amazes me to think that Martin wrote this gem initially as a slow acoustic ballad... but then Alan Wilder took it to an epic level by turning it into this unforgettable gigantic-genius piece of music of iconic proportions. Yeah those two were truly a golden duo 💖🙌
Violator, the album that this song is on, is very, very good. Just about every song on there is a winner. I would recommend you listen to World in my Eyes and Policy of Truth.
This song is a masterpiece. Dereck, you have just reviewed a few DM songs so far, you have just scraped the surface. They were and still are phenomenal!
The best track of all depeche mode repertory by far. Its just perfect, all things in the right place, the right ups and downs, its truly a Journey to listen. A song that makes me feel alive, a song to appreciate live, nature and, of course, to enjoy the silence.
Agree with you on Alan, he is a music genius and led to DM's most powerful masterpieces. You must check also this song, live in Berlin, sure you will go bananas with the performance and how a showman Dave Gahan is 😃
I love Depeche mode from their early songs till now, they are so original and all their songs are hits. This is one of their best. I can't tell you which one is better because all of them are great and timeless. thanks for the cool reaction.
Enjoy the Silence is a Lullaby. It is about a mother holding her baby. The father got married and left the relationship. (Vows are spoken to be broken) So the mother is speaking to her little girl. Nothing to do with the King video. Its a baby lullaby.
This song belongs on every good 80s party and on every good party at all.. There's also a good live version in Berlin on You Tube with 145 million views...
Talent through music that touches a person is true artistry. Depeche Mode has always clicked or synched with my rhythm and life, and that allows myself, in addition to all Depeche Mode listeners, to hear and feel their creations on many levels. They create through what naturally comes to them and their team of editors, producers, and members. Their music clicks with them, it makes natural sense to them, and is genuinely produced as a result. You’ll notice the multi-layers of sounds, rhythms, tones, always at least six. It has been a pleasure to have grown up with their music, music that has always sounded so familiar and falls right into place. Some Great Reward was my first cassette at 14, I have listened to them all my life, and I have listened to them live at Music For The Masses and the people that understand their music are like long time friends. This is true talent, nothing but good comes from this band.
Depeche Mode had some great songs and this song is one of their masterpieces. To hear this song in a very late night set on a cavernous dance floor was a complete and total treat for all of your senses. Everyone seemed to be floating a little bit above the dance floor when dancing to this song and the haunting nature of the vocals made it a stand out in late night sets. One of my all time favorite late (very late) night songs.
my number one clip for so much reasons.... I saw Depeche Mode in Live in Paris, 2017... It was wonderful... They played enjoy the silence. I just cried...
Great Review Actually, there is an amazing story, behind this great song. Martin originally, wrote this song as a slow ballad, with a harmonium as instrumental back-up. But Alan Wilder, came up with the idea to put a beat to it. Matin came up with the guitar riff. Then Alan and the producer Flood, took the song to the studio, and Bam. That's how you produce a simple, beautiful and durable synth pop song.
I was 7 years old when this record came out. Reminds me of a wonderful summer in 1990 and made me a fan of this band until today. Btw: This song was intended to be a ballad. Thankfully they decided to make it a dance track with influences of Kraftwerk.
This is my favorite song from Depeche Mode. I love it so much that I want this song to be played at my funeral (I'm not kidding : plus with a title like Enjoy The Silence I think it's tongue-in-cheek, ah ah). Great synth, great melody, great guitars and a beautiful music video (finally in color !) by Anton Corbijn. What's not to like ? Released in february 1990, it was all over the radios and TVs music channels everywhere (even played heavily in Russia !), that's how good this song was ! Majestic. Best song for me. Period. The official extended version the "Hands & Feet Mix", remixed by François Kevorkian is also incredible with crazy beats galore. Best remix ever. Alan Wilder is credited for not wanking to make this song a ballad (as originally intended by the writer Martin Gore) but the single/album version is actually remixed by Daniel Miller (Depeche Mode's record company chairman and original producer) and Phil Legg (engineer). I love that you say you could listen to this song forever (me too) and there is a 15-minute remix of this song too : the Quad Final Mix (and I'm not bored 1 minute too when I'm listening to it, that's how incredible this song is).
They hardly go unnoticed. They're one of the most respected bands worldwide, many musicians name them as one of their main influences and they got inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame just recently. Their fanbase is probably just as big as those of other famous bands like AC/DC, ABBA, Queen or Metallica.
You are wrong in that Depeche Mode were not popular with this song in Europe. They were MASSIVE especially in Eastern Europe or former USSR. Even today they are adored by the children of those fans😁 But it is true that those numbers dont reflect in albums sales since 90% of them were bootlegged
As life goes on a song will strike a chord with me but nothing will ever remove this song from my top 3 from all-time just an 80's masterpiece and live in Germany OMG !!!!!
To me this is pretty much the perfect pop song ... and I don't mean that the way I write it, because Depeche Mode are obviously not a pop band per se, but the song is POPular to a lot of people and I think the reason for that is that it's not only timeless, but it's also a song that people who usually only listen to rock music can listen to and people who only listen to electronic music are into it anyway I guess and I dare say that even metal heads can dig it 😉. It's radio-friendly, but still a bit avant-garde and it's just a well-crafted tune 👍.
Wow, I'd completely forgotten about this amazing song. Thanks for reminding me of it. Another one that works to mind after hearing this is Electronic - Getting Away With It, that's another amazing song with Neil Tenant of the Pet Shop Boys as lead singer if I remember rightly.
This is one of my absolute favorite songs EVER! I bought the CD maxi-single back in 1990 when I was 12 years old and I still have it and adore all the mixes! Btw, if you have (or stream) the original mixes, you'll find the ballad version too.
This was a hit in US, and still plays on radio now/mentioned on TV so wouldn't of made sense if yuo didn't know! Also know you haven't been outside the US on holiday. This is an 80's + 90's song- was released as a single in Feb 1990-but was recorded in 1989 + also I heard this in 1989 when they played it in Germany when saw them live in 1989! 😁 + come on dereck that riff is a guitar not a synth. + also you forgot that Depeche Moe broke the US with hit single-People are People first in 1984-at least Policy of Thruth the next single was a hit in US as well as Violater being a hit album there as well! 😁
Best nighttime driving song ever! First song I heard by Depeche Mode. So then I had to go through every single album they had before this, and this album violator it’s absolutely incredible. So glad you liked it and I loved your reaction. Saw them in concert in 1993 and it was the best ever. ❤️❤️✌️✌️
It took me years (and Shazam) to find the band to this song. Very surprising result, a catchy, well written song. The biggest surprise was that this is a 90s song, thought of it to be 80s, not bad though.
Liste to policy of truth, personal Jésus, halo, question of Time, question of lust, strangelove, behind the wheel, and so on ....It's a group with a lot of masterpiece.
"04"=2004 That remix was done by Mike Schinoda of Linkin Park fame. The original balad demo version with Martin on the vocals can be heard in the HARMONIUM version that is available online (it is not 100% the demo, but it is very close). Martin was against converting it to this disco song, but fortunately Alan (the sound genius of DM between 1983-1995) put his foot down and so essentially created their biggest hit.
The video was directed by Anton Corbijn, a Dutch director who really built their image and put them to the highest level. He's still working with them, also by directing their concerts and the movies shot from them.
This music video was directed by the famous Dutch photographer Anton Corbijn and he had Depeche Mode singer Dave Gahan fly over to the most scenic places all over the world to have him sit in a chair wearing a King's outfit. Gahan got fed up with that and asked Corbijn what the concept of the video was, at which Corbijn told him that even a king sometimes needs his rest and craves nothing more than a chair to sit down in.
"Enjoy the Silence" is hands down one of the greatest tracks in music history
Yes.
It is a great song! It reminds me of driving around in my bright red 300ZX Twin Turbo with the T-Tops off!
Depeche mode made a bunch of brilliant songs, but this one has something more. It's just a masterpiece. Like sitting in a deck chair on top of a mountain admiring the surrounding beauty

Beautifully phrased. And yes, it's in another league of music, a pure classic.
A mix of the guitar and synths made it literally timeless. Sick.
I just love Dave’s voice 🥰, I will never get tired of listening to Depeche Mode
This is an anthem! It always amazes me to think that Martin wrote this gem initially as a slow acoustic ballad... but then Alan Wilder took it to an epic level by turning it into this unforgettable gigantic-genius piece of music of iconic proportions. Yeah those two were truly a golden duo 💖🙌
It’s definitely the kind of track that leaves you awestruck beyond description.
“ Punch my pony and call me Susie “ !!! Omg that was hilarious. I loved that !
🤣🤣🤣 that's a new one!!!
@@mariaJ3105 I had to rewind it three times cuz I wanted to hear him say it over and over .
Ah its brilliant, he's the best out there 😂
If you like this kind of instrumentation, you'd like New Order as well.
this is my favorite song and i never get tired of it ! 😍
Violator, the album that this song is on, is very, very good. Just about every song on there is a winner. I would recommend you listen to World in my Eyes and Policy of Truth.

Very very good? I think the word you're looking for is....EPIC.
This song is a masterpiece. Dereck, you have just reviewed a few DM songs so far, you have just scraped the surface. They were and still are phenomenal!
"Enjoy the Silence" is in the team : « Immortal Songs ».
Such a brilliant band with SOOOOOOOO many amazing songs behind them ❤️
Undoubtedly, their best Hit 🤩
The best track of all depeche mode repertory by far. Its just perfect, all things in the right place, the right ups and downs, its truly a Journey to listen.
A song that makes me feel alive, a song to appreciate live, nature and, of course, to enjoy the silence.
it's my favorite song of Depeche Mode
One of my favorites by Depache Mode💯💯💯
Hehehe i'm the 101 liker 😊 funny for a DM fan
Excellent choice excellent reaction. This song is a must. Indémodable
Agree with you on Alan, he is a music genius and led to DM's most powerful masterpieces. You must check also this song, live in Berlin, sure you will go bananas with the performance and how a showman Dave Gahan is 😃
The DM live in Berlin is, for me, the most beautiful show of the band, a kind of best-of of all the musics of DM...!!
That live in Berlin version takes the song from a 10 to 11. Just so good.👍
My favorite band!!!
the most beautiful song ever made !!!!!
I love Depeche mode from their early songs till now, they are so original and all their songs are hits. This is one of their best. I can't tell you which one is better because all of them are great and timeless. thanks for the cool reaction.
F....... M.A.S.T.E.R.P.I.E.C.E !!!!

Enjoy the Silence is a Lullaby. It is about a mother holding her baby. The father got married and left the relationship. (Vows are spoken to be broken) So the mother is speaking to her little girl. Nothing to do with the King video. Its a baby lullaby.
One of my Mum’s favourite songs!
I adore it too! That guitar sound is pure euphoria.
One of the best English band. Love it 🥰
One of the most profound songs in all pop history. Beautiful, haunting, and timeless.
I can highly recommend seeing them live in concert. Seen em twice, and every time amazing!

A monument since 35 years!!!!

I know what you mean although this track is technically the 90s. February 1990 exactly!
@@natree9088 No, its not. It was already done in late 1989. But it was released in 1990.
Depeche Mode is brillant and they are one of the greatest !!! They are my favorite, all of their albums are masterpiece

Everyone has heard this and loves it without knowing it.
This song is so beautiful and hypnotic it has sent me into several seizures since childhood. Sad I hv to be drugged up to listen to perfection!
Wilder was the sound and creator of depeche, they never were the same after he left.

Yup, 10:10 “…go unnoticed” they’re criminally overlooked in the UK despite huge success abroad. Long overdue more respect.❤️
As life goes on a song will strike a chord with me but nothing will ever remove this song from my top 3 from all-time just an 80's masterpiece and live in Germany OMG !!!!!
It's a masterpiece!!! Approved!
Plz react to the live version! Even more amazing when the entire crowd sing along.
Good one! More of D.M. please, especially from the Violator album.
@François Quand j'ai vu cette chanson, j'ai pensé à toi d'un coup, je sais pas pourquoi! 😉😄😆😅
Depeche Mode are the most succsessful Synthpop Band of all time
Agree , Kraftwerk , Gary Numan / Tubeway Army close runner up's

This song put them on mainstream radio.
Yum. That is all. From the Violator album, do listen to it.
The remix was done by Mike Shinoda from Linkin Park (RIP Chester). It is really good, clearly Mike is a fan. He rocks it up a bit
It's something to behold in live
DM simply the best

"Punch my pony and call me Susie. Get the flip outta here!" 2:09 Hahaha
Best produced song of all-time. (Arguably, of course...)
I have seen them live here in Sweden 3 times and they lift the arena. You cant sit still and its a totally magiq to see them a live .

El video refleja claramente un refrán que dice: Uno es REY de lo que calla y ESCLAVO de lo que habla
Por eso invitan a disfrutar del silencio!
Así es; eres el único rey de tus propios silencios.
You are the only king of your own silences.
My favorite song from an amazing band (and they have plenty of good ones). Their music might not be joyful but is true to life and still danceable LOL
The video was directed by Anton Corbijn, a Dutch director who really built their image and put them to the highest level. He's still working with them, also by directing their concerts and the movies shot from them.
The Live-Version in Berlin is epic ❗️ Maybe you want to check it out too. Martin L. Gore at the Guitar, real drums and a real Party with their fans
Totally agree… the Live in Berlin version is epic. Gahan and Gore at their best. Oh and those contortionist backdrops are like omg!
Live is the best, best best...mmm
You would like the live version even more.
My favorite Depeche Mode song is “I Want It All.”
You are adorable, Dereck! I enjoy going bananas with you. Love these guys : )
personal jesus and master and servant rom the same band , are masterpiece as well , good night derek
Blasphemous Rumours, Policy of Truth...
Fun facts - the long shoots in the videoe is Anthon Corbijn's assistant. Dave took the helicopter down to the hotel...
