    In a perfect world you could get a generator with remote start, then build a generator box to make it quieter, keep it warm in winter, and protect it. Then you can sit inside and just press the remote start. And feel the juice 😂

    Here are some ideas for futures builds. Build a roof to cover your front porch of your cabin, and build a bigger deck off the front of the cabin, so you have room to sit, take off your boots, etc, outside. Build a little lumber depot. Where you can mill a bunch of lumber and then store your lumber so it can season for your future projects.

      Both are excellent suggestions especially the Lumber Depot. Something like that open garage he built for his 4-wheeler.

    Experience note: I spent last winter off grid in the White Mountains of NH . In a Trailer with propane and 2 Bluetti’s and an Ecoflow mini. Down to 30 below a few times. Temperature drastically reduced the time of service of the power supplies : Until, I made insulated boxes for them ! Just plastic bins with styrofoam lining -1” around the power supplies. They are similar to your Jackery. Last 3x longer now. They generate their own heat when discharging. Stay toasty warm! Hope that helps.

    Ryan, There's a good reason why they call double male end generator cords "Suicide Cords" ! one mental slip can be a deadly mistake. by the way, my youngest daughter had a pet albino mouse as a child, that little bugger could jump out of a 10 gallon aquarium, we had to get her a screen cover to keep it in it's home. Also, keep an eye on your extension cord, the dang ground squirrels love to chew the rubber coating, maybe see if you can find some flex conduit to run it through?

    Worm: another good video. As your cabin is on blocks and pillars might be a good idea to install skirting to keep snow and wind out in the winter months. I’ve done that with my cabin. Insulated the skirting as well. Basically the inside floor is same temp as below the cabin. I also put tarps taped at seams on the ground completely under the cabin. Keeps stuff dry for storage. Just a suggestion. U would need a couple of doors for entry underneath. B Deacon Manitoba Canada 🇨🇦

    I'm working on my garage wiring right now too and using all 10/2 wiring, if for no other reason than ,,,I always over build everything, whether needed or not ! That's just how I roll and after doing things that way for many years. I've never really been disappointed with the results either , other than maybe watching my bank account dwindle a bit faster from using higher priced materials.
    A couple of my contractor friends always bust my chops though for being so fussy and over building absolutely everything I do , but the funny thing is that they all end up saying ,," man that thing is way over built and didn't need to be so heavy ,, but it sure looks good and won't likely give you any problems , anytime soon". I think there just jealous that even though I'm disabled and an amateur in many respects , I can still out build them on curtain projects. Of course I don't have to set to many cost or time restraints on myself sense I'm saving on the back end, like they have to do when they spec out a project .
    So in my case I guess even being an amateur in many respects and doing stuff myself it often pays off, even if it cost more for materials ? Overall, when you figure out what I've saved by doing all the "bull work" myself , a project likely runs 2/3 less than what it would have cost me to hire a job done from the start by someone else, even if I do over built everything .
    To bad it just takes me so damn long to accomplish anything nowadays with the limitations I have to put up with ,,,,,,that can get a bit discouraging when having to put up with constant pain and having projects take so long to finish up. No biggie, I just peck away at things , a couple three hours at a time and eventually my projects get done, even though I dub off as much as you do sometimes.
    For better or worse I've got a .22 range that distracts me quite often too Ryan .
    It's sure is nice to have no set schedule so we can take the time to protect the general population from all those desperado tin cans lurking in the woods, now isn't it ? LOL!

    @DanB-ei8br ปีที่แล้ว +5

    I get it, sometimes you just have to do, what you have to do. That being said, be very careful when using that double-ended male plug extension cord and never start the generator unless everything is plugged in first. In our area, it's known as a suicide plug because of the bare prongs sticking out that could be live.

    I used to work PT at a hardware store and it was inevitable that every Christmas season somebody would come in looking for a "double ended male extension cord" because they screwed up putting up their lights and had two connect two female ends together. I tried explaining why that was EXTREMELY dangerous. Happened every year.

    • @noyopacific
      @noyopacific ปีที่แล้ว

      It should be, especially since he'll be running it in cold weather when resistance heating of the wire should not be an issue. The overload protection on the generator should also act as a circuit breaker too. I'd probably have spent the extra $10 on a 25' coil of 12 gauge and eliminated the question but I'm rich enough not to have to worry about spending that kind of cash. 😜

    On a GFI there will be two sets of pos/neutral terminals. One set should be marked as inputs/source or high for power in. The other set is for fault protected output to other outlets. It won't work backwards or if they share the same terminals. The grounds often tie together on a single screw. And polarity is an issue. Black goes to the side with the smaller plug terminal. The screws on one side are usually a darker brass color, black wire, and the other side silver, white wire.
    Good luck.

  • @soulbreak8794
    @soulbreak8794 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Hey worm, I'm an electrician. The gfi isn't going to work like that. On the back of it there is line and load. Power source to line, then plug in cabin to load.

  • @CyberviewU
    @CyberviewU ปีที่แล้ว

    Great job on the electric install. The generator may have a clogged main jet which is the screw on the bottom of the carburetor bowl. Clean the tiny hole in the jet with a piece of stranded wire, then disconnect the fuel line from the carb and drain the dirt out of your fuel tank and into a bucket. This is best done with just a little gas in the tank.

  • @leebernardo1000
    @leebernardo1000 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    The cover, you bought, for the outdoor receptacle is designed to be mounted on an electrical box and on a wall. You wouldn't need to do all the under the cabin mounting - this unit could be mounted right below where you want your indoor receptacle and the wire runs right through the wall instead of through the bottom plate. Also, it's easy to fish a wire up a wall if you feed it between the insulation "Paper" and the wall boards. Remember Black wire to Gold Terminal, White wire to Silver!

  • @shockburn
    @shockburn ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You should have used a legit generator inlet plug instead of the suicide cord. The inlet will handle up to 230v 30amp. They have them at home depot by the the distribution panels. The gen inlet are male so your extension cord end is female making it fool proof for not zapping yourself or curious others. Either way, nice install and it will get the ob done.

  • @stevewalters4565
    @stevewalters4565 ปีที่แล้ว

    Your basically making an extension cord with a outlet. I would have spent a little more for 12gauge but that’s me. If you’re really worried feel the cord running from your generator put a load on it if the cord gets warm stop and get some 12 gauge. But your correct if you’re pulling more the 15 amps your gfi and the breaker on the generator will trip. If you put one on the other side of the cabin definitely use a 12 gauge. I’ve made this mistake before in my earlier years. Bigger is better. My rule of thumb is whatever I think go bigger gauge!!!!!
    Ryan I always enjoy waking up on Saturday make some coffee and I you’ll know by 06:00ish Ryan and Ringworm is ready to go!!!!

    Ryan, I know you dont care.. but just in case one of your viewer does. A GFCI purpose is to protect you against electric shock, only, it dose not provide over current or thermal protection. Thats why they are required in wet locations where the risk of shock is higher, like bathrooms, kitchens, near pools, outdoors (standing in a puddle. lol) so inside your dry cabin not required. Unless you install a indoor pool... maybe your next video??? Lol...

      So long as he doesn't get a generator that is rated for more than 15 amps continuous there is no issue. That generator also has overload protection that is basically a circuit breaker. Adding another circuit breaker is not a bad suggestion but it would be somewhat redundant here. I'd have probably spent another $10 on 12 gauge wire but #14 will work for 15 amps.

      @@noyopacific what about a friend or the next owner who doesn’t know that. Uses a different generator. There is a reason every circuit has a breaker.

      @@RexMoore1984 I said it was not a bad suggestion. Sorry that isn't good enough for you. You come across as a rigid type of guy who is unable to consider a perspective other than your own. BTW, lot's of circuits that are run off of generators don't include any circuit breaker other than the overload protection.

    They make a power inlet plug that would be the male end of your extension cord in place of the GFCI. HD does sell them basicly specifically for this purpose. I'm not sure if that GFCI would even work back feeding it like you are.

    I might have just drilled up from underneath to run the wire up into the space between the studs to whre you want he outlet. Thus not having to tear apart the shelves and wall.
    The way you did it lets you check for moisture.
    On your weather proof outlet cover, it is designed to work with a weather proof box. Should have been right next to the cover. Often come as a kit with both the box and cover and an outlet.

    May I suggest a few things? I'm a part time "know it all" (lol hardly) anyway maybe for future reference or consideration; PVC schedule 40 conduit (grey in color) and fittings are generally fused together and the conduit ("pipe") is easily cut with recip saw or hack saw or even some product specific lopping style cutters are available. You can really get on a roll with this type of material. If installed as intended by manf it is also at a minimum water resistant and also rustproof. It does get a little bit brittle in the cold, so don't beat on it with a hammer or such. Unless you're into that kind of thing. Finally (if you even read any of this, dang I should have put it on an audio format like a podcast or sumpin) even as much pain as it would cause; look up a table for "ampicity of conductors" to safely size wire and really to protect wiring, fuses or circuit breakers at the panel or source is highly recommended. Simple circuits really are simple just use your google machine for some pointers. Good luck and be safe.

    Mice can jump up to 24 inches with a running start. Look it up. Don't think the flashing will help. 13 inches from a standstill.

    My biggest concern is the exhaust from the generator under the cabin

    hehehe, GFI Ground fault interupter. Get rid of it and thing, and stuff will work just fine, but run the electronice through a surge protector.

    Wouldn't it be nice to have the solar panels close to the cabin and be able to plug the batteries directly into the panels while the batteries are still in the cabin?
    Next thing you'll know you'll have running water. Thanks for the video.
