I'm a pilot. I've also been happily married for 11 yrs; 6, as a professional pilot. What she says is true (I love your rant, it's very funny). Our secret with my wife is to ALWAYS COMMUNICATE. As soon as I know my schedule, I post it on a shared calendar. I do mostly 4 day trips. I call her every night to check on her. I tell her when I go out with the crew for dinner. I make sure to spend quality time with her when I am home. Communication is key. I acknowledge that I am gone for about 15 days of the month, so I make sure to maintain our relationship when I am home, or by phone when I am on the road. Also, I live in base. This means I don't have to commute like I used to, hence, I don't have to leave the day before a trip that starts early in the AM.
From the pilots point of view: I choose to live in the city YOU are from so you can be close to your family. I commute from there to whatever major city shit-hole my airline bases me at. I stay in a crashpad which basically means I'm a homeless person living in a homeless camp full of sky-gypsies... I work all hours of the day, sometimes all night, sometimes 16 hours in a single shift, multiple time zones and different climates. Oh and "big brother" is the one who decides that for me. The little control I have is calling in Fatigued if they push me too hard......I am flat out exhausted from the stress on my mind and body when I arrive back home.... Now, with that said, you can see what most pilots come home to when watching this video..... cheers

I get where you come from because my wife says alot of the same things you do.... sacrifices by both is a definite..... on the pilots side I do everything I can to make it better, but I'm sure you see the same thing we see: small steps forward and then a giant leap backward.... I'm on reserve with my airline and about to go to 3 months of training to switch aircraft to get a line and better schedule.... i hope she understands it's for the better in the long run
I am a flight attendant and it was my dream to marry a pilot since i was a little girl. I decided to make this dream a reality this year, and i am literally so excited to experience everything you just talked about even though it was meant to be a rant 🤣I guess because i am a flight attendant, it is different for me, as all of this seems normal to me, because i am never home for 4 days too 😅 I wish you all so much joy in your relationships 💓
I wanna cry 😭! You made it funny but everything you are saying is true: I think I’m on the resentment side already and I’m just 4 years in to my marriage! It’s like I get jealous of his job because they are always calling him to go fly somewhere. People admire me for being married to one but it’s not a bed of roses. With two toddlers and a baby, the worst thing you can hear is “baby, I’m not coming home tonight” or when he is on his “day off” the worst thing to hear is “ oh baby, Um, I have to go fly because an emergency came up and the other pilots are not available for the flight. Man it’s like you can’t plan ANYTHING! Plans always get screwed up and thrown off! Sometimes I sit and wonder what life would of been like if I had kept my job as a Doctor. It’s like our kids would of hardly ever seen us. That’s no way to live, hardly seeing each other. My rant is done. I admire you though for how clam you are as a pilot’s wife. I aspire to be like you, someday.

This is why I want to choose the Medevac life. Move to the middle of nowhere, but my job is basically to sit at home all day and then at random points leave for four hours a day and come back. Doesn’t pay well, but good if you don’t want to get divorced.

I nearly drove my wife mad when on ExTO during COVID. However, she has health concerns right now, and I need to be with her and the kids. The living I made as part of a hustle culture airline has made it possible for me to be by her side. I can’t think of my other profession that would tolerate our situation.

We are a military Family so in some ways we can relate. Never know what today brings or where we are moving or if I will deploy. I think many woman married to pilots will appreciate this video! I think that is going to depend on where he is at and how is schedule is vs yours (think time difference, zones, etc.) but if you haven’t heard from them in a couple days it doesn’t hurt to send a text just to touch base. I’m always texting even if I know my pilot isn’t going to read it until he lands or until he wakes up. Eventually he gets back to me. There are some places they may not have great service also...lots of things can factor in how much you are able to communicate. If it is bothering you though, I would definitely talk about it next time you’re able to and express your concerns or your insecurities and maybe come up with a plan to at least try to stay connected. I really hope that helps and welcome to the world of aviation! 😘
The guy could be a bigamist who secretly has another wife and kids in another country. He could be living a double life. There was a movie on TV about that back in the 1980's, supposedly based on a true story. This pilot had like three different wives in three different cities. They all thought he was such a wonderful guy. But of course in the end he gets found out, and man do they get pissed! Great comedy movie, lots of non-stop laughs! Classic.
Scott Johnson sounds like a book I read by Anita Shreve called the Pilot’s Wife. The pilot ended up having a whole other life/family which she found out about after he died! Anyways, that movie sounds like one I should watch! Thanks for the comment!
