I think it’s cuz he’s a realistic portrayal of the price of power. His dream was noble, but he had to do some horrible things to obtain it. In a way, a living contradiction. That and the overcoming of his own hate is brilliant.

I' subscribed because I love FMA analyses. From what I understand, though, is that those "enemies" he made were because he made Colonel so young, which makes him a threat to the generals above him. He's young and ambitious and with his track record and the fact that he's an alchemist, he could easily pass them in the ranks.

The character of Roy Mustang was definitely influenced if not outright inspired by a very real person; Colonel Claus Von Stauffenberg. A German Wehrmacht Colonel who participated in WW2 and is notorious for his direct attempt to assasinate Adolph Hitler during the July 20th plot AKA operation Valerie.
They both have a lot in common. Otherwise good men who still participated in unethical things; as while Stauffenberg was not a member of the SS; He still fought for Nazee Germany and initially even advocated for it. Much like Roy; the prosecution of the war itself disenchanted him with it all; especially after experiencing and reflecting on the behavior of his superiors. Specifically the Fuhrer. And ultimately motivated him to rebel. Just like Roy.
The defining piece of evidence comes from the original anime series of FMA; Where after his fight with the Fuhrer Roy Mustang wears an eye patch over his injured face. Just like Colonel Stauffenberg who not only lost the better part of an arm but also one of his eyes during combat in Africa.
Africa was a theater of war that Hitler sent German officers that were particularly threatening to his power to serve. People like Erwin Rommel who were almost just as popular as Hitler; but didn't entirely support the extremist views of the party. In Africa thier talent could be used beneficially; but still keep them away from Germany itself where they could potentially disagree and eventually oppose the Nazee leadership.
This is in fact exactly what ended up happening; as when Germany began to lose the war; Hitler was forced to recall people like Rommel to Germany itself.
After the July 20th assasination failed; which was by the way solely due to warm weather; Erwin Rommels tacit participation in the resistance movement was discovered by the SS and they compelled him to commit suicide under threat of torturing his friends and family. The Nazee could not outright execute Romel; as his reputation was to great. They knew were they to do so; they could lose the support of the people.
Both Roy Mustang and the Amestris coup is undeniably an allusion to Stauffenberg and the German resistance movement as a whole; and one of the deeper aspects of FMA that truly makes it a great story and not simply another cartoon.

The assasination attempt failed due to warm weather because the meeting where the bombing was to occur was originally planned on taking place in a concrete bunker which would contain and intensify the blast; thus resulting in maximum trauma.
The meeting was moved outside of the bunker to a building constructed of light wood due to the heat; which allowed the otherwise somewhat weak explosives in Stauffenbergs briefcase to be dissipated as the building exploded outward. This saved Hitler life; as Stauffenberg had taken advantage of his position to place the bomb less than 10 feet away from Hitler.
