  • Pilots from 617 Squadron have taken part in the US's largest training exercise of the year, with the training being described as "the pinnacle of combat air in the Western world".
The Dambusters, with their F-35 Lightning jets, have been working with American and Australian counterparts in Alaska as part of Exercise Northern Edge.
Wing Commander Stew Campbell, 617 Squadron, told Forces News the training in Alaska sees personnel "exercising at the pinnacle of combat air in the Western world in the large ranges available in Alaska".

UK, Australian, and US F-35s all automatically networked together, providing a common operating picture to Allied air, land, and sea forces is a game-changer.
    Great work, Allies.

As child, after seeing TOPGUN I dreamed about being a fighter pilot, and once I’d been to the fleet air am museum and learnt about the harrier jump jet, that was it
I was totally hooked on fighter planes
Unfortunately I never became a pilot but still so intrigued

I wonder how the training area in the Alaskan exercise compares to the Nordic fighter jet exercise Arctic Challenge Exercise (ACE), which will take place from the 29th of May to the 9th of June. Around 150 aircraft and 3000 persons from 14 countries are to train across the host countries Norway, Finland, and Sweden - mainly over the countries' northern regions.

The Typhoon Force (only 5 front line squadrons and one joint squadron with the Qatar Emir Air Force) is rather busy at the moment with UK Air Security, Op SHADER, NATO Enhanced Air Policing missions, British Forces South Atlantic, as well as it’s own training to ensure that it’s personnel are trained and equipped to continue to meet these tasks. Whilst our our combat air aircraft (Typhoon and Lightning) are incredibly capable platforms, they can only be in one place at one time.
