He’s a docker from Glasgow. We have more in common with the Māori than we do our own upper class.

He did an interview/therapy session with his amazing wife, for her tv series “Shrink Rap”. He tells a beautiful story of visiting a Native American tribe and their sweat lodge. He spoke with total reverence for the people, how they treated him, how they treat each other etc.

I lived in New Zealand for a few years and was sung on to a Marae. I howled my whole way through it. It was the most unexpectedly moving exquisite thing I had ever experienced in my life.

I can imagine. I can imagine how powerful it must feel in person, to feel so welcome, I teared up a little watching it and can't really explain why TBH

Hello Billy Connolly I remember meeting you up north at Waikiki landing and my mum and dad were mangering the place you let me and my mum help film your trike ride from waitiki landing to Cape reinga.
So awesome to meet you I was 9 years old then now 26 and remember it like yesterday as it was my first ride on a helicopter

I loved this series and seen it many many times. New Zealand is a place I want to visit one day. I know the words to Pokarekare Ana off by heart and most of the song Hine E Hine. I have cousins in New Zealand who are part Maori. Also my 2nd great-grandmother on my dads side was from Glasgow.

I bought the album which compliments the series, but unfortunately it did not contain the moari tunes on this clip
(which I wanted).... but it does have the theme song sung by billy pokarekareanna..... which I was suprised that my mother knew off by heart as she had a kiwi teacher in rural Durham in the 1960s!.... and the album played a part in introducing me to the music of Kate Rusby.

I have found that. I have cousins who are part Maroi. They are related to ancestors on my mums side who first came from Scotland to Ireland (Ulster) then in the mid1800s some of their descendants emigrated to New Zealand and through them, one of their great-granddaughters married a Maroi man and had a family with him.
