Yes, his genuine empathy for his mother made me cry. It takes a huge heart and soul to not to get caught in resentment or blame. (Of course, it probably helped immensely that he had a happy childhood, even though she left.)

I’m not a Scot but my daughter is half Scot and I have fond memories of sitting in the lounge room with my Scottish in laws listening to Billy Connolly comedy sketches on record! It was one of the many greatest Scottish things they introduced to me. I absolutely adore Billy as much as he is a part of my own family. I get a big lump in my throat when I think of him not being around one day. What a gift he has been to this world. This humble, kind and hilariously funny man who has filled millions of peoples lives with joy. What a life well lived. I just purely love him.
He said when his grandmother came to visit it was like "the sun coming over the mountain." 💜 What an amazing guy! 💜
The Scottish accent is the warmest sounding one I've ever heard. I adore it so much. My uncle is a Scot and I have no idea what he says half the time :)

@pooja350•Irish is even more confusing I think it depends where in Scotland/Ireland your from or if your with Family Members (Glasgow is very strong accent I have family from Scotland surname is Mackenzie my brother has gone back to 1500’s !Some where in the workhouse they all but one emergrate to USA !My brother just had DNA test done we have Balkan /North East European 42 % English 12 % Scottish /Irish Welsh my red hair I am getting my sons done as he wants more details on his S/Lankan DNA which clearly is not going to be 50% Sri Lankan he is only 15 Years Old half a Family tree on my side we have met his close relatives but he was kept a secret for a decade?People still behave like this they live with you plan a child then want a refund don’t even tell you and dump you with frying pans thinking that it’s perfectly fine only problem was It was eating his conscience for a decade and made him actually ill -We have all the family names -But no real contact..Only contact they wanted was my son to live with them which under no circumstances is happening-I would never get him back they are lawyers /Political I ended up changing my phone number when they wanted his passport number legally they have no rights,they can reach out to him but alas I don’t actually think a father figure sets a good example when as my sons said (Rejected ,then he was divorced had two affairs two little girls?)With his ex wife .Now he is with a third wife so doing a family tree 😂that’s honest I am expecting my son might find half siblings anywhere in the world

Just the most human of human beings, with every vulnerable particle here in public view. Billy remains open to whatever is revealed to him. I have met this wonderful man twice and he is the most genuine example of a megastar who has remained untouched by his fame. I love this man. ❤️

Sometimes when people explore the family history, they’re in for a surprise. Case in point here, Billy always thought he was a Scot with Irish roots, now there’s a bit of India thrown in too.
I remember when the Big Yin came to Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I went to see him, it was the mid 90's, Och Eye Tha Noo :)

I was stationed in Holy Loch, Scotland in the late 70's and went to Glasgow quite a bit. Great place with great people. Being very tall and quite wide, I got a lot of stares and people asking how much it took to feed me. :) I'm planning a trip back there in a few years. I hope I run into Billy :)

My grandfather grew up in the tenements of Glasgow in the early 20th century. He said it was as bad as the worst ghettos in the US.
Not all the tenements were slums. However, look up the Cowcaddens tenements in Glasgow. They must have equalled any slum in the western world. The pictures are very, very depressing.

He described his neighborhood in Glasgow as I have related here. In the US he worked hard and became a home owner and sent his son to college. My parents had a modest home and income. I went on to start a company, buy rental properties, a large boat and luxury cars, and other investments. I sold my company a few years ago and am semi-retired.
I wish he could see his family now. Immigrating here and working hard paid off for the family.
My granny's sister died a few years ago. She came to the US as a lady's maid in the 1920s and died owning a million dollar plus beach house.
The US has been good to us but we never forget our Scottish roots and we long for the culture of the old country as it was passed down to us.

Listening to him talk gives me happy memories of my grandfather who was born and raised In Glasgow🥰 one day I hope to visit this place. I did ancestry and come to find out we have Irish ancestors as well.

Holy moly, I'd totally forgotten that show and that the great Billy Conoly was the 2nd teacher on that show! I use to watch that show. I remember my dad took a real interest in the show, only after Billy came in.
Billy went to the same school as me. St Gerards in govan. And worked in the same shipyard as my grandad and uncle new him from Fairfield shipyard Govan

I'd give more credence to the 1901 census saying 'Ireland' - someone living in Scotland *might* lie to the census enumerator and say they were from Scotland [in 1911] but would be much less likely to claim they were an immigrant if they weren't. I have lots of cases in my tree where the place of birth varies from census to census. I usually find the earliest records are the most likely to be correct.
And wasn't the reaction of the Glaswegians to seeing Billy in the street wonderful? Let's face it, he *is* very recognizable LOL.
