Dear Casey, i am so glad you reacted to my recommendation 🥰🥰🥰
Russel Allen is a full range veteran and is considered one of the "manly" voices of rock music in general. Allen is not about the extraordinary notes, but the memorable and emotional singing. His consistency is impeccable for the last 20 years straoght and you can see their latest live shows, most comments are about this fact. He sounds the same or better in live shows. You can hear his "rock" voice mostly in his project albums with Jorn Lande, another great singer.
Since you loved this song, i strongly recommend their another ballad hit "Paradise Lost".
Anyways, hope the best for you and i hope you stay true and listen to what you desire and not going with the "trends".

Russel Allen has massive amounts of range! Though he did get more "gravelly" as he got older. Early Symphony X put more emphasis on the "Symphony" part. "The Odyssey" is the peak of that range.

I think the increased grit in his vocals, especially on Paradise Lost and Ionoclast, was a decision he made, because the music got harder as well. He can still sing clean and nail the ballads, as shown in this song.

I got the honor of buying Sir Russel a beer before a show in Kansas City on the Iconoclast tour with Iced Earth. Sadly, I also did the same for Jon Schaffer as well ( their bus got to the theater in KC (drove overnight from Denver) way early so no hospitality/catering was ready yet in the back of house and the AMC Midland is just , block from a Flying Saucer taproom and I was the only fan camped at the entrance (GA show) and saw them and Stu Block hanging looking for something to do. Stu declined joining us.
I rode the rail all show and Russ gave me the oh so awesome personal acknowledgement head bobs through out the set. Near the end when they started into the intro to When All is Lost I belted out that shit as hard as I could and added some ornamentation and a big gliss going down into the start of the first verse.
Actually saw his eyes bug out for a second and Romeo gave me a thumbs up while finishing the opening links legato.
One of my most cherished concert memories.

lol i saw that about the husky gravely. i knew you would come back into the fold after hearing a bit of gravel brought back into the sultry lyrical composition of russell allen.

After the guitarsolo, they are using polymeters, they are playing different patterns, but in the same tempo.

If you like this song, i would definitely recommend Paradise Lost (The song, not the album).

Waooo!!!....Congratulations my friend Casey!! ...I want invite you to give us your opinion, like vocal coach, reacting to who is considered the best singer of the world...His name is Dimash Kudaibergen, a young singer who handle 7 octaves and 3 semitones of vocal range (An alien)...He has been singing since he was 5 years (he is 28 now) and he can sing in more than 15 languages...But if you decide to react to Dimash for the first time, please don't do it with his most recent songs ... I recommend that you go to the year 2017 and react to the song that made him a global idol ... I mean the performance he did of the famous French song called "SOS D'un Terrien en Détresse", when he participated in the famous Chinese reality show The Singer in that year 2017 ... With that performance Dimash earned the reputation of being the best singer on the planet, so I recommend you start with that one...You have to be prepared because you are likely to receive a flood of views, comments and new subscribers....And I have to give you a warning: Never react to The World Best videos, because they deceived him and treated him very badly.!...I hope to see you first reaction soon and if you don't mind, I'd like you to mention me as the person who recommended reacting to Dimash....Here you have the best high quality video of Dimash performing S.O.S. Live 2017.....th-cam.com/video/bDX3FhmyNac/w-d-xo.html

It´s from the newest album (2015) but he had always this range. You just must have listened to a song where he didn´t show off on that level. The album V: The New Mythology Suite is the one where he sings mostly clean. Whereas his grittiest vocals are on the albums Ionoclast and Paradise Lost.

I think "The Accolade" is both one of their best songs, maybe their best half-ballad, and it shows Russells full range. At least his full higher range, not his deepest tones. And it´s an earlier song, 1997

What vocal style does Russel Allen sing? Anything he wants to! (LOL)
Their style shifted over the last few albums and became a lot more aggressive and heavy. The older albums had vocals more like this. Personally, I prefer the newer stuff, but I am sure you will get some old-school fans commenting who are total haters on the new stuff (LOL).
I suggest Walls of Babylon next.

I know this was a few weeks ago at this point, but this vocal style isn't on a ton of tracks (title track of Paradise Lost & the Odyssey would be others to listen too).

The older albums are better to introduce Symphony x... this new albums are less symphonic, i like it but don't touch the Odyssey, Lost Paradise, and the others ..

Thats just like your opinion man. Underworld is a fantastic album in my opinion.

    • @ClifftopTragedy

I feel the opposite way. I first heard SymX on Paradise lost and I love Iconoclast and Underworld. The old stuff is good but sounds very dated to me -mainly because of the sound and imitation strings which weren't as good back then. They take me out of the music like bad CGI in a movie. Romeos playing back then often sounds like a Malmsteen tribute band. I get it but I wasn't there at the time and I think that's kind of how it works. I would love them to do the odyssey again with a real orchestra or even just update the synth sounds with the same playing if they have the midi files for it.
