I think this ending scene can be interpreted as fresh’s father thinking he’s giving his son real life advice (although he is). He doesn’t know that Fresh knows the meaning of everything he is telling him, far more than his dad ever will, everything his father taught him, he had applied it to perfection in real life. As his father complains about a couple of minutes and 2 dollars of his life wasted, because Fresh is treating chess with his dad like a game, he doesn’t know that Fresh lost $5,000 dollars he had saved up, put his entire life and his sister’s lifw on the line, lost all of his friends, manipulated others into killing for him, gave up everything he had, and put a target on his back, all while under the pressure of a single mistake costing him everything. He applied chess tactics in real life, under the pressure of wolves at his door, yet his father is berating him about a meaning less chess game where the only value is Fresh having some one to one with his father. The final moment, perhaps the last moment he gets to see his dad, all fresh needed was to be a kid for once, have a normal life, have his dad hold his hand, and play a fun game with his dad, his dad can’t even give him that. That’s his last straw and he breaks down.
i'll try to explain why the ending is powerful to me. First, you have to remember that Fresh is still a boy. His sister is being pimped, and he's an outcast in his own home. He watches as two of his childhood friends are killed on the basketball court, and his schoolmate gets killed too. Fresh even has to kill the dog he loves, but through all of that, he never "breaks down". It wasn't until he saved his sister and got revenge on the gangsters did he finally have time to be a "child" and cry - that was from someone else from another Fresh video
Well said. I agree with all of this except for that last part about his dad not being able to give him that. IMO it’s everything you said and then he finally is able to let go and feel the weight of everything he went through now that he has finally “won”. I don’t think he resents his dad or anything, I think he just reverted into the kid he unfortunately never got to be.
It is also very telling how Fresh's Father did not know how to react or deal with Fresh crying. He was totally caught off guard with it. It highlights the emotional disconnect he has with his own son. Fresh or any child needs a loving parent and all the emotions finally caught up to Fresh. He could not hold it back any longer he is a human and he is a child.
This movie is a classic. Fresh crying is deeper than words could ever express. He played the most dangerous game of chess ive ever witnessed and made it out alive! Checkmate!
What was the purpose of him crying at the end? I watched this movie since a kid, im 37 now and still try to figure out why. Can you explain his tears at the end? Did Samuel do him something?
@@realwayne86 As brilliant as he is, he's still just a kid. He had to execute his plan with "cold" calculation; had to hold in all of his emotions developed over the course of the film and keep them in check, including his own fear. Even his grief over the death of his girl and the other boy and over Chuckie. All that would be hard even for an adult. We can only imagine what that does to a 12 year old boy. Everything he was holding in he let out in his quiet tears with his father being none the wiser. His father's berating wasn't anything major. But it was like the one last straw that broke the camel's back.
@@gsutton78 Thank you brother!! I felt your comment fully! That made totally sense! I can't read between the lines well in all movies only because they have too many plot twists lol. I take yours as a grain of salt which is 100 percent understandable! But that end gets me emotional but it also left me hanging on a hook by wondering about his tears!
@@realwayne86 I agree, brother. The ending was really powerful! As skilled as he was, the audience had to be reminded that he wasn't some hardened criminal. He was still human, having to endure things no one should ever have to endure, let alone a kid.
This ending always stuck with me. There are different interpretations of why Fresh is crying but to me it was because he's finally being allowed to let his emotions out for the first time. He's had to live such a tough life and be so hard and bear weight his dad would never imagine that now, when it's all over, he's breaking down like the child he is.
Those tears are a culmination of all the craziness fresh witnessed in this film (his life) coming out. And the reaction from his father is knowing he left his child to deal with the world alone. He doesn’t need the details, he knows that it’s been rough for Fresh.
He was learning street chess because he was playing real life street chess, where EVERYONE was a Pawn, he even used his father to show him how to move! Damn this was a good movie
Oh the irony of his "tough" dead beat Dad who talks a big game and plays a childs game for the entirety of his existence. All while Fresh lives more in one hour and displays the bravery and fortitude of a hero.
@@Themackofalltrades A father who is emotionally disconnected from his kids is worse than a dead beat. Just imagine living or having to deal with a father that is emotionally distant and who is constantly berating you. Worse he is telling you things like "life is a chess game" which is could not be further from the truth.
Amazing movie, crying because he just risked his life and used others as pawns just to break the chain of drug users. And his Pops asking if he’s ready to be the King? He’s already The King, it was forced upon him!
Bruh 😂 are you smoking? This is a 13 year old actor who nailed this scene and you talking about Sam Jackson's reaction which could have been slightly better but was well done. You crazy. This is a 13 year old who didn't just cry he put himself in the shoes as if this really were his life. This scene made the entire film
My interpretation. Every child deserves a loving parent. Life is more than a chess game. Fresh's tears is a direct indictment on how his father has been raising and teaching him without any visible love. The worse part about it is that Fresh will have to move and may never see his father again. It is reminder to us that all children need love no matter how intelligent, courageous and cunning. It is also important to highlight how Fresh's father had did not know how to react or respond when he saw his son crying. It further shows the emotional disconnect the father has. It is very sad and painful to see.

Held all that end until the end where the only person he can be vulnerable with was his father because like himself, his father knows the dangers of chess. Hence his father knew just by looking. Notice the dad was reading the news paper before Fresh arrived. Didn’t take him long to connect the dots
I think what sells this scene. FRESH, has always looked stoic. Rarely did we see him smile or look angry. And then in this final scene, we finally see the child. Cause he's a kid😢
You white those tears had nothing to do with his father. He was a angry kid. It was over . Those where tears of relief pain joy grief. It made his father human.
Fresh was fighting a war. Can't show no fear or weakness in battle. Now the war has been won, it's over. Now it's safe to cry and process wtf just happened.
I had a perspective on the ending of Fresh. Fresh's father(Sam) represents the King as the father, and Fresh became the king when he managed the drug bust. In the game of chess, when the board is left with two kings, it results in a stalemate meaning that all the kings would do is "check" each other. When the kings meet they would not see each other due to Fresh getting out of the projects with the witness protection program. It could also be a checkmate because Fresh managed to get through the drug bust and he got was able get his sister out of crime with Esteban, something his father couldn't do for them.
I think he loves his father enough to express himself to. Throughout the movie, he rarely had any emotions. Father might have been a bum, but he is the closest person he got
I was hurt like him. I had to learn how to navigate without my father in and out the streets and i'm a female. I cry because I thought my father would teach me but instead he skipped out and cared less about raising me as his daugther and other kids. Guess he was the Star in his own world only to end up drunk outside. Why couldn't a father try his best to raise his kids despite his own demons/ drug addictions?? That kid in this movie out smarted them dope fiends to rescue his sister from a pimp and her own father who gave up on being a role model citizen. Son was street smart and understood the assignment by any means necessary, In the end, his own father realized he failed his only son. The son who had to be DAD and BRO to change their environment since his father was too dumb and drunk to care for his 2 kids. WOW . MY LIfe God Bless. Love * Light
My interpretation: Fresh had hoped that his actions would lead to a safer future for him and his sister, possibly through witness protection promised to him as a form of escape from the dangerous neighborhood. His tears could reflect the disappointment and despair of realizing that he is still stuck in the same environment, with no immediate way out; showing the harsh reality that even after his strategic moves and sacrifices, the systemic issues and dangers of his surroundings persist. His bad chess move was trusting the system that failed him.

Crying in front of his father was exactly what he needed. When it was all over, all that was left, was to cry.
