    I just tried this. What can I say ? Its fucking awesome. I am not the best with an airbrush and pre-shading is in my opinion just a waste of time. You're going to lay down all those panel lines then spend your time worrying about blowing them away when you start the full paint job.
    But this works so well and its so easy. Did the marbling, the blend and you can see immediately there's a nice tonal variation that's going to look great after some weathering.. obviously as my first attempt it wasn't perfect but you can just tell this is a better method straight away..
    Thanks for this.

    Good job showing the effect clearly. When paint fades from weathering, it actually shows the strokes of the application of the paint. But first we have to agree we are making accurate looking models. Historically, stylized reproductions in art, have usually appealed to our eyes, but are not accurate. It's an interesting human quirk to be drawn to stylization versus accurate representation. So thanks for helping modeling away from Pre-shading (which I admit, does look cute) and on to the next step of accurate model making.

    I tried Spitfire underside. Not perfect, I used Vallejo model air which is not thinning too well. But, I got quite nice tonal variation. I think after watching second time, I "pumped" trigger too much, while it should stay in one place. Blending was easier, and I got quite nice and natural tonal variation. Now, I will try the camo top.
    Thank a lot for showing this technique!!

    I am in total agreement with you about about the whole pre-shading thing. I never did like it and I'd thought I was the only one until I began reading your info. I've been primering model aircraft....sometimes ships....in black since the 1990's. (weathered models ONLY) as it provides the perfect canvas as a starting point to begin laying colors. We think alike brother!

    This looks MUCH better and more realistic than the panel line "pre-shading" effect does at 1:42. The pre-shading effect is okay but it never gave much of a marbled or mottled finish like this does.

    LOL, the final "just do it" was absolutely hilarious 😂 Nevertheless, I kinda liked the painted surface more before you put the blend coat 🤔... Dunno if you camera had the color saturation level a bit scrambled up, but eventually the gray looked to me a bit too much uniform and "flat". But it could be just my interpretation of your video. Thumbs-up for choosing the camo of the Italian Air force for this "cigar" 😁 (that was the nick for the legendary F104, now long gone to pension...)

    looking at the 3:00 reference picture, have you tried a "bigger" marble pattern? Because I have seen very good modellers with quite the same look that your starfighter has at the end of the video, and while it looks pretty good, I think that the subtle difference of the spots is too "small"... I think when paint fades, it fades in bigger parts if you know what I mean? It's a tad too "spotty" for my taste. In terms of "size" of the tonal variations... anyway. Good video.

    I know i'm late to the game but how would you do this for a white aircraft? I want to try the idea on my 32nd scale Intruder but I'm worried about covering the white areas of the plane over the black primer. I'm doing the "A" version where the entire underside is white.

    When you do this proceedure do you need to lighten the original color call outs? I did this on a F15E and I am hooked. Thanks for the video.

    • @DoogsModels
      @DoogsModels  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nope. No need to lighten to account for the black. However, I will often lighten where I feel a color is too dark or needs to represent a more faded version of the paint. But I'd be doing that no matter the primer color.

    A nice technique, going to have to try it on a future project. For the record, I don't think that preshading should be dismissed, I have seen plenty of photos of aircraft where preshading would be a good option.The problem as I see it is that some builders use the technique waaaayyyy too heavily and too precisely, the pic of the BF109 at the start of this viedo is a perfect example. If anyone saw the video from Chris Becker on Blackbasing vs. Preshading, you would see what I mean. The preshade lines were same all over, perfectly uniform, no gaps or breaks, same width. No fading as one reaches the wing tips. The effect is supposed to be subtle and imperfect. Let a pin wash or all-over wash do the rest.

    • @DoogsModels

    • @DoogsModels
      @DoogsModels  8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Adam Goatfish Well, that was kind of the goal with this particular aircraft. In my view, black basing isn't about getting some kind of HDR-like contrast, but tonal variation appropriate to the subject being depicted. On the final thing the variation is subtle (as it tended to be on Italian 104s save for a few specific examples for which no one makes markings), but noticeable. • @modelmakerz0690
      @modelmakerz0690 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Liam Craven, the problem with pre-shading is that it is not realistic at all. Seriously, I challenge you to actually find anything in full size that weathers with dark lines. Pre-shading is only eye candy. Like the difference between a painting by Thomas Kincaid and Frederic Church. Kincaid is far more "popular" because it is eye candy, but not accurate at all. When I was making the Enterprise 1701-D for STNG at Greg Jein's shop we painted the model so as to break up large monotonous surfaces. Compare the ships of TOS and STNG. I find it amusing that people ended up calling the style of the STNG ship "Aztec", when it was only to break up the surfaces. We would never pre-shade the panel lines and details of the ship, but break up the surfaces - yes.
