I've said it before and i'll say it again, you my friend have the best painting tutorials i've ever seen. I think thanks to you alot of people find joy in painting (i know i do) and you teach them that everybody, with a little practise, can paint amazing quality figures. Awsome paint job ;-).
YES! I held off painting this mini just to see your eventual take on it and of course, you never disappoint. It looks so natural & lifelike. Now I'm praying your Blood Rage enthusiasm is renewed & you'll visit more models :)
Incredibly looking sea serpent! I love this game models a lot, even having them all already painted, (I followed your tutorials for the Fire and Ice giants to great results) I still wanted to watch this video and i wasn't disappointed. Outstanding work :)
I am just watching this video again, and it just makes me even more excited for the upcoming album. The music during the highlight of the skin is some of the best music you have ever done!
Thank you so much Henrik! I felt that piece was quite brave with its stark textures and dissonance, and it is also one of my favourites on the album :)
Mission accomplished in two days, thank you very much Sir. I'm faaaaaaar away from your experience , knowledge and talent but this Sea Serpent is without a doubt my best looking miniature ever.
Thanks so much Lucio! I did really want each to have a very distinct skin tone without getting to garish or over the top so I'm really glad you like them :)
Amazing work, I love the small details that truly bring the serpent to life (the glue between the Jaws). Will you ever do a tutorial on painting the clan warrior minis? I am a newbie when it comes to painting, so I would like to start with those before I move onto the big awesome monsters, but I can't find any tutorial as detailed, well explained and, well, with an end product of such a high quality. Thanks a lot!
@@Sorastro Super late to the party here. But am I correct in assuming you just mean GW shades in the right color? So you have brown, blue, red, and yellow?
Love the choice of skin colour and how far you managed to push the highlights without making it look cartoon like. Have to admit that I would have been tempted to give the green wash a slight pull towards blue for the water effect (but that's only due to the number of Atlantic storms I have watched) An excellent production as usual
They're pretty much the same thing; both Lahmian Medium and Vallejo Thinner Medium are matte mediums used to thin paint. They're just made/marketed by different companies.
a medium is practically paint without pigment. you use it to thin paint when you want to layer paint and to ensure it dries evenly across the model. If you use a lot of medium with only a little paint you can create your own shadewashes.
Hi Ethan! The only thing I'd add is to point out that Vallejo's Glaze Medium has some retarder built in which slows the drying time of the paint, so I often use it for wet blending :)
Usually, water is enough to thin paints down. However, if you go for 50+% thinning, medium works better as the thinned paint will flow better. With only water, due to the surface tension of the water, it sometimes tends to form droplets. I only have the Vallejo thinner. So, when I don't wet blend, I have to wait a bit longer for it to dry, but I can't afford to buy every single bottle of paint/ thinner out there 😉
Thank you Alex! I'm honestly not the best when it comes to brush care, but I do find that the Rosemary & Co Series 33 brushes hold their point pretty well, even with the abuse I give them :)
Thanks mate! My serpent is sitting happily in a cabinet so storage isn't an issue for me. I find the figure can withstand normal handling no problem, but it sure wouldn't be hard to break the strings of glue if you wanted to :)
Thank you sir! I compose all of my own music, and the music in this episode is being released next month as part of a 90-minute long album of fantasy-themed tracks :)
Thank you Franck! I usually have an idea of the kind of look I want, then experiment with some colours on a practice mini or something before committing to the final miniature :)
Wish I hadn't watched this. My attempts now look like I applied the paint with a potato and in the dark by comparison. @sorastro's painting you art an artist.
As always, beautiful paint work Sorastro. As a kind of reference for me, how long did it take you to paint it from start to finish? Im still learning to paint minis
Amazing job. I watched all of your Blood Rage videos, and they are fantastic. I own the game myself, and have been wanting to paint the minis. For someone who has an artistic background, but never done any mini painting before, do you have any tips? Also, the minis that you do, how long does it roughly take to do each one? And one last question, when you are doing the highlights, you do mention that you are doing it in gradual layers. Do you have to wait for each layer to dry first? Or can you do this while it is still wet?
Thanks Justin! Please see the videos for tips - especially the beginner episodes of each series for "getting started" advice. How long does each one take? It varies a lot, but you can spend as much time as you like depending on what you want to achieve. I maybe spent four hours or so on the Sea Serpent..? When layering the highlights it's best to let the previous layer dry (which doesn't take long if you're working in thin layers) :)
Outstanding work as always!!!. The saliva effect using glue was a stroke of genius...... The only thing i believe that would possibly have made it better is if there could be some transparency-like effect in the water to create the illusion that the serpent silhouette barely shows through under the water (as a dark figure), but i dont know if that is possible given the geometry of the miniature. Maybe i missed it but was the model primed with black and then zenithal highlights were applied using white?
Thanks a lot Abi! That's a really cool idea; might be tricky to pull off due to how rough the texture of the waves is, but I'm tempted to have a got at it on my spare serpent.. Yes, I mention in the steps overview that I've primed in black, the used grey and white for the zenithal highlights :)
Hi Sorastro. Really awesome tutorial as usual! I was waiting for you to paint this, and it does not disappoint. Will you be painting some of the remaining miniatures for Blood Rage? Maybe the Fenrir? (I know it is kickstarter exclusive :) )
Thanks a lot Henrik! I'd love to paint Fenrir, and that other giant - mountain giant? I'm just not sure when I'm going to be able to fit them in because I have so much on at the moment! :)
I didn't see my name in the list of Patrons. Maybe need a higher level for that? Not that it really matters, but I thought I'd look for it and I did not see it.
Hi John! Yes, you're just one tier too low; although I would love to be able to list all patrons at the end, I think it would make for an impractically-long list! :)
Amazing. The skin tones on all your Blood Rage minis are lovely. How long would it take you to do the skin tones on a model like this (if you weren’t recording of course)?
Thanks a lot Justin! Hmm that depends on how careful I choose to be but I reckon around 1 - 1.5 hours? I painted a complete practice sea serpent in a single morning, although I was a little more scrappy with those pesky tendrils :)
Wow a single morning?!? I’ve spent multiple day long painting sessions on a single miniature and struggle to even approach your level of craftsmanship. A job well done sir!
Hi Azrael! I did consider using a gloss varnish for the water but feel it would look odd without also varnishing the serpent (which is obviously wet too), and I'm not a big fan of entirely gloss varnished miniatures. But it's certainly an option depending on your tastes. :)
How about glossing the whole mini and use the glue idea as though water was falling off the serpent? The only issue that handling it would break the glue.
At first I didn't particularly care for the model, but I found painting it weirdly enjoyable... after painting it I used Vallejo's Metallic Medium (unmixed) to give its pale belly a subtle fishy sheen.
Hi im here again to ask you to paint some miniatures of Dark Souls boardgame please... I have to say thank you because i painted my miniatures of Bloodrage, star wars legion and descent with your tutorials... Can you please paint the Gaping Dragon or the Black Dragon Kalameet for the next video? -Sinvídet
Thanks Dani! I won't be doing any videos for the vikings, but I am producing some PDFs for them over on Patreon (just speed painting - nothing fancy) :)

Thank you! I'm so happy to hear your Sea Serpent turned out well 😀
Excellent job. I have been holding off on my own Sea Serpent to see how you tackled yours first. Lot of great ideas and really well executed.
Thanks a lot! I'm glad you found it useful :)
Amazing! After binge watching all of your videos and a bunch of others on here I think i have a new hobby. Thank you!
Thanks James! That's nice to hear - welcome to the wonderful hobby! :)
As usual, spectacular highlighting...
Thank you buddy! :)
Love the music.
The serpant turned out fantastic as well!
Ha ha - thanks Chris! You'll find the music on my next album which is due out in July :)
How does this video not have so many more likes. It's incredible work
Thanks so much Rob 😀
Outstanding! I might have to buy one of these as well.
omg almost like it is alive....what an excellent paint job!!!
Thanks so much Thanasis! I'm glad you enjoyed it :)
another great tutorial painted a very successful color scheme, congratulations
Thank you Victor - for all your kind comments! :)
Very good Sorastro!!! Love it. You seemed to pull details from the sculpt that I did not think we're even present.
Thanks a lot Adam! I was meaning to ask if you were planning to attend the UK Gaming Expo this year or not?
Sorastro's Painting I certainly am. Yeah. Driving down on Thursday. Staying till Sunday. Yourself?
Will u be here today?
Great looking mini love what your doing with Blood Rage
Thanks a lot! I really appreciate that :)
so great! looking forward to the rest of the miniatures from the board game!
Thanks a lot Petros! :)
Yeeey! Finally Blood Rage again! Like always awesome job. Waiting for the clans now :D
Thanks Maciej! Glad you liked it :)
Another great tutorial
4 different monsters, 4 different ideas for skintones, I like that
Well done Sir :)

Thanks a lot! I actually just did a monochromatic speed paint of my warriors by throwing some Shade over zenithal highlights :)

Absolutely outstanding!!! Your work is top notch!!
Thanks so much Josh! :)

Thank you for this fantastic video. I have been waiting for this. Great!!
Thank you Rammson! You're very welcome :)
Wow! Good job!
If I could I would give you 1000 thumbs up, this such an awesome paint job !
Thanks Stefan! I'm glad you liked it :)
That glue is the best thing ever. Thank you.
Thank you! It's a pretty neat trick eh :)
So smooth! Amazing!
Thanks Jeff - I wanted quite an organic look :)
Yeah! More Blood Rage. Can you explain what lahmiam medium is and what the different Vallejo mediums do?
They're pretty much the same thing; both Lahmian Medium and Vallejo Thinner Medium are matte mediums used to thin paint. They're just made/marketed by different companies.

Amazing paint! Just curious, if you had wanted to make the serpent look wetter, what might you have done?
Thanks! I guess you could brush on some thinned gloss varnish perhaps..?
Magnífico trabajo.- Congratulations !!!
Thank you very much! :)
Another amazing video from an amazing youtuber x
Thanks mate! :)
this is beautiful!
Thank you kindly Jake! 😀
Amazing job as always and finally Blood Rage again ;)!
Maybe there will come a time you will paint the clans or smaller monsters ;) :)
Fantastic work!
Thank you so much Herr Moriden! :D
"Will you be watching this painting tutorial?"
"Is it doe by Sorastro?"
"It is."
"Then you already have your answer!"
Ha ha - thanks Nortic! :)
Stunning work! How do you manage to keep your brush to such a fine point all the time? Mine always tends to splay when in contact with the model.
Thank you Alex! I'm honestly not the best when it comes to brush care, but I do find that the Rosemary & Co Series 33 brushes hold their point pretty well, even with the abuse I give them :)
Your video are outstanding!
Thank you Marco! I really appreciate that :)
Looks awesome! Do you find the glue saliva holds up to handling and storage, or is it quite fragile?
Thanks mate! My serpent is sitting happily in a cabinet so storage isn't an issue for me. I find the figure can withstand normal handling no problem, but it sure wouldn't be hard to break the strings of glue if you wanted to :)
Beautiful, spittle is great. Will you also paint individual clans?
Thank you! Yes, although I might do a monochromatic speed paint on them 😀
Amazing work again. Really helpful commentary. I would absolutely love to see you do Rising Sun work (Hint, Hint)...
Ha ha - thanks Milo! I'll see if I can squeeze some Rising Sun in at some point :)
Wohoo! Finally something else than Star Wars! Can we expect to see some KD:M monsters painted?
Ha - thanks buddy! Yes there's more KDM coming soon: goo.gl/qyXz3K :)
It´s really awesome, as your other videos!!!
Thank you so much! :)

Thank you sir! That holder is the Rathcore which I Kickstarted but I think you get in their store: rathcore.com/
fantastic!!!
Thank you Lionel! 😀
That glue idea is great.
Thanks! It's an old trick but still a nice feature :)
Wonderful as usual . Just a question: how do you work in order to imagine the mix of different colors of paint to obtain the final work?
Thank you Franck! I usually have an idea of the kind of look I want, then experiment with some colours on a practice mini or something before committing to the final miniature :)
very good painting work on the figure, I will follow you to see your next videos. Regards my friend

Probably would be improved with some high gloss for at least the water portions before the final white touches.
