We check out a Westinghouse Igen4500 generator that the customer brought in when it would start but would light up as an overload and die right out
We show the full diagnostics and how to repair the issue we find
We also show how to check oil and check / replace the spark plug
If your generator leaks gas, new generator will not restart after fueling, starts then dies out, surges, generator will not start after putting fresh gas in it, Westinghouse generator surges or bogs down when under a load, flashes overload after starting and then dies out and will not restart
We have a lot of questions from customers during the hurricane season wanting to know why their generators will not start back up after putting fuel in but they do not realize they are at the bottom of the tank where all the moisture and inferior quality fuel is. Make sure to use ETHANOL FREE fuel for best results

The grit / sand, is deposits left over from gas being left in the bowl and evaporating away. Non ethanol gas tends to not leave that.
Thanks for the video, I was too cautious about removing those motors on carb. But after seeing you do it, I felt brave and finished the job👍🏻
Thanks
Glad to help! Hope it goes well for you!
Thanks for doing this video! It helped me get my generator up and running smoothly again. The only problem I had was the 2 screws that hold the main air filter together would not come off, they would spin with no way to secure the back of the screws so the nuts could come off. I had to cut through to plastic around the screw to get the air filter off so I could get at the nuts that hold on the carburetor . Great job!
Awesome job! So glad to assist!
Thanks Martin, subed and liked your page--We lost power up in NE TN due to the hurricane. I have one of these mounted on back of my camper and luckily have it in my driveway. Fired it up and had surging problems all day night (never shut off but wasn't happy) cleaned the jets after watching this video and that was the problem.
Awesome job! I am glad to assist you!
Well done, Martin! I think most people would probably remove the case to get at that carb. Your patience and expertise is commendable! 🔧👍
I agree, most may remove the case but I can not see spending all the time taking it all apart when it is accessible this way. At least they left the minimum room to get at it! Thanks for watching!
Good clear video. Far too often issues with generators not running are simply due to owners not doing maintenance and leaving fuel in the carburetors to go bad. That unit even has the ability to turn fuel off while running which will run the bowl dry.
I appreciate that! Lack of any maintenance of any sort is the number 1 issue we see
Martin you have become a TH-cam video pro! Well done!
I appreciate that! Have been trying to improve but don't have any video background, just learning as I go. It makes it easier to help if the videos are somewhat good. Thanks for watching!
You can use a guitar string to clean some of the holes in the jets also
Great tip!
Tks alot for such a detail video!
I appreciate that!
Another excellent video. Thanks, Martin.
Thank you for your words of support and for watching!
Very nice work!
Thank you!
Another good video. Thanks
Thank you for that!
Excellent!
Thank you
Was waiting on you for my utube fix
Lolol 😊
Haha! Glad to help you with the dose you needed! Thanks for watching as always!!
Where are you located?
Bloomington, Illinois
Next week it’s supposed to be extremely hot in Texas so I’m testing generator to night and getting extra back up fuel in case power grids go down 😢😢😢
Definitely have heard that a ton right now! I help with generator technical questions, especially during this time of year after hurricanes hit. People really don't understand how important it is to have power during those times until they are without it!
Right around 8 min, you mention a fuel shut off valve. Where is that located?
It is directly behind the switch at the front right panel of the generator
A friend of mine has one of these generators. It was running as of it was getting a little carboned up. He changed the fuel filter and air filter. Then we checked that the choke was working properly. That was fine. We then proceeded to remove the bottom carburetor bowl to see if any dirt made it's way in. Found a little and cleaned it out. He took the throttle stop screw out and pilot jet. Made sure that was clean. The generator runs smoother now, but he's getting a serious pop from I think gas getting into the exhaust and exploding as it burns out. Very quick explosion but shouldn't be there. Any ideas on what's causing this and a fix for it? Thank you!
Check the oil make sure it does not have fuel in it. Normally won't get popping unless the valves are adjusted too tight or there is too much fuel
@@IndRepair Thank you for the reply. I'm wondering if the throttle stop screw has any affect on the amount of gas getting through. That may not be adjusted correctly, but I'm thinking it may not be that critical if it's close. I may be wrong in that assumption.
@@ufoabove It would just run faster, the fuel would all be consumed if proper fuel mix was achieved no matter the speed
Thanks again for making this video available to us. I helped my friend do it right today, taking the carburetor off the engine so we could really clean it. He took the mounting black plastic piece off and needles to say, springs everywhere. Using this video as a reference we were able to figure out how and where they go. A lifesaver!
Awesome news! So glad to help!
Not a bad looking system.
I been wondering what was under the skirt of these machines.
Definitely a tight fit, I do like that they give you just enough room to work on it. I really despise a lot of these that you have to completely remove everything to work on
I realize from my motorcycle days that bad gas and gummed up carbs are a real thing.
All that being said I have been researching mid-size generators since being badly affected by Hurricane Beryl and a lot of things I am seeing on TH-cam are problems with Westinghouse generators.
Are these things a pass or are they a decent generator?
I see many problems with the Westinghouse generators. I would say spend some more money and go with a Honda instead of the complications of the fancy features on the Westinghouse myself
@@IndRepair Thanks.
So, the old saw applies and that is, Buy once, cry once.
@@myvenusheeler Definitely so!
Do you have one for the dual fuel version? It’s surging just at idle and when it revs up sometimes
I do not, pretty similar process if surging you can pull the carburetor bowl and clean out the main jet or remove it completely. Likely some debris in there
Hey there so I cleaned my carb like yours and it didn’t fix it. I realized I forgot the pilot jet so I removed and cleaned that and now the surging is 95% gone but when I run it and a little load hits it it will rev up a little but if I try a big load it totally falls on its face and dies or wants to die. I’m stumped… the carb looked near spotless when I opened it… the emulsion tube and pilot jet had a few sprays thru it before they cleared out but they seem good… I’m changing the plug now but it looked fine too. Any help would be appreciated!
Edit: replaced the plug and it’s surging a little again. Then evens out and surges again.
@@bounderchris I would give the carburetor another look has to be some clogged jets somewhere or the fuel has some moisture in it or is not great quality
@@IndRepair thanks I am going to give it another look in the meantime I’ve ordered a brand new one.
@@IndRepairwell opened it up for like the fourth time while waiting on the new carb and cleaned everything out extra good and it idles very nice now but it falls flat on its face when I try to put a load on it… any ideas? Thanks! Leaving day after tomorrow and the new carb won’t be here in time
the gel stuff is fuel stabilizer.
You think that is what causes a lot of this gelling?
WHERES ALL THE BLOOPERS ....LIKE PPL FALLIN ON ICE ..OR TRIPPING OVER MOWERS ...OR SOME MONKEY JUMPIN ON A DEERE TRYIN TO GET THE PTO OFF .... GOTTA HAVE SOME FUNNY STUFF ... I KNOW
Lmao, I think you are right. May be helpful to some views but not my kinda thing
