There was an interview on radio years ago with Steve Perry. He said he was looking and looking for work with a band, and was about ready to pack it in and go home....then he got a break. My God that would have been a loss to the world. It would have been as bad as Hendrix deciding to take up pottery instead of guitar. Perry, best voice in rock history.

One of the MOST BEAUTIFUL ballads ever written. To think it is the first Journey song that SP and Neal Schonn wrote together is so cool. Neal goes from Acoustic to an Electric guitar 🤯. I love this song and the history it brings to Journey. In an interview Perry said it was instant kinship between the two of them.....

I see and hear so much of the love he had for his mother in this song. She was the one who got him his first break. She was the one who told him to keep on trying when he was going to quit singing. She was his first manager and he adored her. The lyrics, "Your song inside of me", I think refers to her, and her encouragement to share his unique gift. And its also the appreciation he had for his fans. Journey was not only blessed with the Neal/Steve combination of raw talent, they also had THE BEST front man in Steve because he had the ability to connect with the audience through his emotive voice, but also the way he drew them all into the fun of each and every gig.

Steve's voice is perfect here! This tone was his normal singing voice, which it seems he rarely used, preferring to sing in his upper register. But this is just beautiful. Steve was the total package! He had the perfect teeth, hair, angelic face, body, charisma, showmanship and of course, THE VOICE!!!

Rolle was an excellent member of the original Journey. I truly love what Jonathan Cain has brought to the group, but the early songs where Rolle sings a part then Perry sings a part are just magical. Everyone, regardless of profession, has the urge to move to a better place. In Rolle's case, he admitted on the VH1 documentary how he was so sick of the road. I believe his quote from the show was, "you couldn't of paid me a million dollars to pack another suitcase".

Yes, but...he joined this band and when he realized he had the power he could not handle it well. Journey literally switched gears (listen to the first 3 LP's). He toured too much for his voice. He was a mama's boy which means he did not "hang w/t guys well" and isolated...Elvis has left the building. No doubt Journey would have broken up because the label was going to drop them. When J Cain joined, he was in the same situation w/t Babys...band over w/no hits so he paid his dues. Perry never really paid his dues for years and like a trust fund kid, you don't know what you have because you didn't have to work hard for it, it was given to you.

Yet their best album by far is Infinity, the first album after Steve joined. It still retains the brilliant progressive rock of early journey. I just wish they had Perry's vocals for some of those earlier albums.
This song was on Infinity. IMHO Journey decayed rapidly after Gregg Rolie left a couple of albums later. Steve basically took over and turned them into a candy pop machine.

I, being a massive Journey fan, here is the biggest take-away. Throughout the intro while Neal is playing the acoustic, he is constantly amazed by Steve's voice- he glances down at the fret board several times and grins....he knew that Steve was goddam amazing even singing a song that they had just wrote 2 months prior.
The worst part is Gregg in the background-- he knows that Steve is "taking his jobbbbbb"

This is DREAM material! I never got to see this years ago on T.V. I would've been eleven and my ears would not have been fine tuned to this.
