Opening a 30 Year Old Time Capsule

- On March 11, 1989, I made a time capsule. It has stayed sealed through all the life changes and moves. Today, on the 30 year anniversary of sealing it, I'm cracking it open!!

Awesome! I dug a time capsule and not opening in 25 years, I'll probably be married and have kids but I put a soda in there and some other cool things like notes saying what's going on in the world rn and what I think will happen, great video!

Thank you for waiting all these years, not giving into opening it & finally sharing this moment with us, Todd! ❤️ I'm going through a lot in my life right now & just seeing your smile & true happiness looking back on fond memories from your childhood makes me happy. I'm 23 & I never did a time capsule as a child, but this makes me want to do one even now at 23 for when I am in my 50's or older to look back on with my future children one day. 🙂
It was a challenge but it made it so special when I finally did it. I highly recommend it. Do it tomorrow! Don't wait. Sooner you do it, the sooner you will be able to open it.

Me too!! Mine was hiding in different attics across the different places I lived. Luckily, nobody had a roof leak! 😁
My dad did the same except he buried it in his backyard on August 14th 1980 when he was 10 years old
We recovered it 40 years later it contained a bunch of stuff it had a mix tape his brother made for him in the summer of 1980 which contained the latest hits at the time, a Star Wars toy, a roll of Super 8mm film which we still don’t know what’s on it, a movie stub for Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back, and a letter from his 10 year old self

Great video! I recorded Star Trek eps from the TV back in the 1970's and listened to them in bed under the covers at night, too! 🖖😊 And my brother had a baseball cap piggy bank as well, though his was Cincinnati Reds! 😊

I'm currently 17 I'm planning on burying a time capsule. And in that time capsule it's going to going to have a DVD with a video of me giving directions to another time capsule which has old coins from the 1940s and I buried that one in 2018. I will open the time capsules in the year 2050 so I'll be 47 year old
I put cassette tapes in my capsule but I have no way to play them today. You probably won't have a DVD player. Probably better to just make a map...

Sorry to tell you, but if the DVD contains organic dye, it probably won't last even near 30 years. If you've already made the capsule you should open it and replace the DVD with an M-Disc DVD, M-Disc Blu Ray, magnetic tape, clay tablet or something else made to last decades. Also make sure the capsule is very water tight, as groundwater can be pushed in and destroy some of the contents. Throwing in some desiccant would probably be good too, reducing the chance of condensation.
Would suck waiting 30 years only to find out the contents are destroyed, even more so than having to redo it after 2-3 years.
If you include any type of storage format (be it DVD, flash drive, etc.), include a player or device that can read it in the capsule as well.

I made a time capsule with my best friend in the 90’s but he told me 20 years later that he waited a week before digging it up and taking everything home for himself! Couldn’t he have at least buried back our letters to ourselves! Jeeesh!

Funny thing about time capsules it the person a who made it, also wants to open it later.
I just wrote a message 4 people in 2050 and put a 2020 25 cents coin in and now I’ll make a time capsule for me that I’ll open in 10 years

I made one at the end of 1999 when I was 20. I’m going to be opening it this year in 2020 now I’m 40. It’s been stashed in my mother’s loft.
Just waiting until I get a better camera, and it’s why I’m watching videos of other people opening theres.

just put it in your attic and not burried it🤔 nice..i also made time capsule but i cant burried it because our place was cemented ill just put it in a closet and sealed😊
Mine was actually in several attics as we moved. 😁 Just make sure it's in a back corner that is safe from weather and safe from eyes (including your own - aka try to lose it up there)
