Tales of innocence r has a translation patch you can add to the vita or pstv if you have it hacked to play. Easy to do and worth it, there are an abundance of games that have been fan translated because they never made it to the west for the vita.

Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those rare games that only come around maybe once a generation. It was something special that was only hindered by the Wii. So excited for the Switch remaster.

Go with the 3ds remake it's the same game with extras. And I have to say for me it is my favorite 3ds game, beating out the bravely series and a link between worlds.

I'm surprised u say tol2 and not 1. I love the heck out of 1 but hearing 2 was time travel threw me off from trying it out....along with it being a sequel since from my experience sequels usually end up failing what the original did
This is not a new game, this is the same game from 2012 running 720p with inconsistently low resolution, in addition to lowish texture quality. The remaster was disapointing they've pretty much only polished up the main character models and added a epilogue for full price
jfray G. The remaster might have been disappointing, but the game itself certainly wasn’t. It was my first time playing it and it was completely worth it for me. Even if the remaster wasn’t as great as others, the game itself is still intact (unlike another remake)
I personally love my vita as it had some of my favorite action jrpg in the form of ys memories in celceta and ys lacrimosa of Dana. Totally agree with you for ni no kuni and dq11

Also I'm a bit sad Xenoblade chronicles x (2015) isn't there instead...granted Trails in the sky is good but frankly I never liked it - unlike Cold Steel which I absolutely love - so for me it's Xenoblade all the way.
On the one hand Persona 5 to many people might be the greatest JRPG ever made. On the other hand, I appreciate so much that you have a specific amd consistent opinion and preference for RPGs.
@referral madness Because those games are very different? Persona 5 has a focus on characters and style. It's polished and appeals to everyone. SMT is a very niche game that only applies to "hardcore gamers" for lack of a better word. It's not very polished and has a stronger focus on gameplay.

Brett Mitts It is up there no doubt. Persona 5 is definitely among the top JRPGs of all time and I have played a lot of JRPGs over the years. Definitely one of the best stories. Dragon Quest 5 also comes to mind in that regard.
Persona its a waifu animu sim rpg. SMT Its hardcore philosophic demon summoning dungeon crawling rpg where you kill god and lucifer to become a god or a demon king. They have a different tatget audience but still loved both. The dating sim in persona is still anoying for me mostly cause all the girls in persona 5 are ugly for me

@@kr1me2000 That explains a lot. Three Houses is more like the older Fire Emblems on the GBA, Gamecube and Wii story wise. The only fault was the week system it bored me like Persona dose in the aspect. I find the people who only played the DS ones hate the older (better) type of Fire Emblem personally I hated Awakening and Fates. Echos was good, but that was also a remake of an older game.
2010 - Dragon Quest 9 (I wish they'd do a multiplayer game again, I loved this one) 2011 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2012 - Rune Factory Oceans 2013 - Fire Emblem Awakening 2014 - Stick of Truth 2015 - Xenoblade Chronicles X (easily my favourite RPG of the decade, also the only game besides Earthbound I really played on the Wii U for any serious time). 2016 - Stardew Valley 2017 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2 2018 - Xenoblade Chronicles 2: Torna the Golden Country (it was a weak year, but this one was good) 2019 - Final Fantasy 7, 8, and X were a gigantic treat for me on Switch (while I played these all many times before, having them on a Nintendo console is so much more sweet). I also have yet to play DQ11 because I know a family member picked it up for me for Christmas

Personally Xenoblade is my RPG of the Decade. However one that I feel gets overlooked on the Wii is "The Last Story". The character designs are some of my favorites, I love the music and story, but I will admit the combat might put some people off. Still if you haven't played it I 100% recommend it.
I know you haven't done the Persona games on this channel but they kind of do deserve to be in a top 10 RPG list I think. That ever gonna change BTW now that P5 Royals been announced for March 31st? :p
Xenoblade chronicles X on the Wii u was freaking awesome btw, I've never played any other in the series but that one was fantastic. Couldn't believe how they pulled it off on that hardware
I totally agree with you. Sure it has its flaws like the story but the Soundtrack is amazing, the battle system is fluid, and the world is gorgeous. Here in Germany Xenoblade Chronicles X still has way too many haters for the wrong reasons.
Xenoblade Chronicles is hands down my favorite RPG franchise AND my favorite Nintendo franchise ( though EarthBound remains my favorite game of all time ). All 3 games thus far have been among the best experiences I ever had with a game, between the story & characters, the incredible soundtracks ( the lack of any X songs in Smash feels so very wrong ), the gameplay and the worlds we explore they can't be beat IMO. Hopefully X gets a Switch port though...it very much deserves a 2nd chance, I know I'd happily buy it again ( I did but the original Xenoblade 3 times now across Wii, New 3DS and Switch )
Xenoblade is by far my favorite game of this decade every game system intertwined beautifully for a wonderful gaming experience that I will never forget
@@michaelk639 Characters and Monster Autoattack when in Range and you get to use various skills much like in MMO's. Skills effects changes/improves with your positioning and in what order you use them. Most of the time it's a stat check really, but if you don't grind too much it's quite a challenge. Combat may look boring in vids, but I assure you it's super fun of you play yourself.
I agree about Cold Steel 3, easily the best JRPG of the year. I had high expectations for it going in and yet it fully exceeded them. Outside the fantastic story and characters that par for the course for the trails series, The battle system was improved so much from the solid battle system of the first two games (hell, I even gushed about how they improved the damn fishing) and the pacing was fantastic (I spent 120+ hours on the game but boy did it not feel like it). Glad to see you cooled down from the ending lol (though I understand, it took me a bit of time to process the ending). Also, I think I might be the only person on the planet who thinks cold steel 1 is better paced then cold steel 2. That middle section of CS 2 really dragged on and on for me, culminating in that tedious as hell Zemurian ore quest. CS 1 never dragged for me that bad personally.
Yer I can see that but I think the reason I like cs2 over 1 is cause it just feels faster maybe cause there's no thors sections to slow down the pase. Also cs2 gives me Sara and Sharon for more then an hr so yer
I mean a lot of people view CS2 as the worst trails game because its such a mess. Divertissement just fits weirdly into the flow of the story and reverie corridor is just filler to have a second final boss when infernal castle was a good way to stop with some epilogue telling us the things happening in crossbell. The entire second act also reminds me of SC chapter 8. CS1 and CS2 could've probably been 1 game if they trimmed a few scenes that weren't essential. Going from azure to cs1 and cs2 must give a man some crazy whiplash.
@@luminous3558 While agree that CS 2 is the worst Trails game, It's still a great game (that suffers from pacing issues but I also think SC also suffers from pacing issues as well). Even the worst Trails game is better than the most games (I'd personally play CS 2 over any Final Fantasy game).

+1 for should say JRPGs. There’s excellent western RPGs that have been out in the past decade. Divinity Original Sin 2 is one of the best I’ve ever played.

While I haven't played as many modern RPGs in the 2010s (I've been spending time catching up on classics) but I must say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is my game of the decade. It just captured my heart and I love its world and characters. A few others are of course the original Xenoblade, Mario & Luigi Dream Team (which I actually didn't play til this year) and I can promise you, I'll be spending some quality time with all the games on this list
Paul Hermosillo Haro never thought of Shulk as perfect, he is flawed, he also grows throughout the game and has some really good writing behind his character and amazing voice acting, I can’t say the same for Rex at all, but that’s an issue with xenoblade 2 in general, poor voice acting and story drag down a semi interesting character that at times feels like an exact carbon copy of Shulk
Witcher 3, Persona 5, Dragon Quest XI (specially on the Switch), FFXV (I love the game but I understand why some people found it lacking), Skyrim are personally my favorites
Great list! It’s funny to think that if it wasn’t for you, I, and others, that we almost didn’t get “Xenoblade Chronicles” here in America! Especially now that it is one of the top JRPG series and its sequels were important titles for the Wii U and Switch! I love the Trails series, I really hope the Trails in the Sky trilogy and Crossbell arc along with the Cold games make it to Switch so more people can enjoy them. Personally I found the first “Trails of Cold Steel” game to be faster paced and more interesting than part 2, but both are incredible games!
No love for Skyrim, Mass Effect 2 and 3, Xenoblade X and 2, Persona 5, Octopath, or Undertale? I’m a bit surprised to see 100% by the book JRPG’s, except for Xenoblade 1.
DQ XI was fantastic. I saw Octopath in your intro and had hoped to see it on your list, but since it came out the same year as DQ XI, I can see why it didn’t make the cut. Keep up the great work, man.
Octopath Traveller is a game I really wanted to like, but it seems a lot of games that bulk on up RPG battle mechanics too much tend to feel burdensome after a time. First couple of hours is the honeymoon period: "this battle system is awesome" - hour 3-8 is the denial period: "Wish these battles are over, but at least I like the battle system, right?" then over that it's either "I'm glad there's an auto-battle" or "Let's just get this game over with!" Unfortunately, because it's against what I want to enjoy, I find it is the slick and simplistic tried and true mechanics that tend to be the games I can play for dozens of hours with. Xenoblade, easy and snappy, Dragon Quest easy and snappy, Final Fantasy the same... but then Square's "B-games" for lack of a better term, but Bravely Default, Crystal Chronicles, I am Setsuna, and Octopath Traveler all have these gimmicks that seem really fun at first; but, burdensome after engaging with them over and over again.

I have to disagree with you about the VITA. It had “Persona 3 Portable”, “Persona 4: Golden”, “Trails in the Sky 1&2”, “Trails of Cold Steel 1&2” and then almost all the other PSP rpg’s and tons of PS1 rpg’s (like “Suikoden II”. The VITA had two major issues in my opinion: the first, and biggest issue, was the seriously over-priced proprietary memory cards. The second was not having L2 and R2 buttons. If there was a system I felt was a waste of money it was the WII U. I literally bought it just for “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Tokyo Mirage Sessions”. While “Tokyo Mirage Sessions” wasn’t what I expected or wanted from an SMT & Fire Emblem crossover, it was still a good game and I’m glad it got a second chance on the Switch. Now if only “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Wind Waker HD” would get ported to Switch also I’d be a happy camper! And “Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered” looks AMAZING on the Switch!!!
They should have made it so you could change the difficulty of DQ11 after starting the game, I just went for normal difficulty thinking it would be well balanced, 60hrs in I was waiting for it to get difficult but nope, boringly easy and to hell if I'm going right back to the start to make it challenging.

I wouldn't say people in the west won't give dragon quest a chance I think it's has more to do with square enixs track record on releases and what platforms it comes to that and the fact that it seems to take square enix a century'to not only make the games but localize them as well compare that to final fantasy where they seem able to put out more then one during a console generation
I played radiant historia in a hacked ds... yes, I feel guilty but it was so amazing. The narrative was so thrilling. Loved it. You can consider as well I am Setsuna from tokyo rpg factory which recovers the essence of the old style games.
Dont feel guilty about that! Emulation is quite the same. Loved the idea of Radiant Historia. So many improvements to older RPGs, yet it felt so full fletched

It's such a shame the ending was rushed. The Xillia cast is one of the very best in video games and the skits were consistently brilliant across both games.
Also, I'm sorry, but you're off your rocker if you think Tales of Hearts R was the best RPG of 2014. It's bar none the worst game in the franchise, with a horrible cast, ugly towns, and arguably the worst ending to any game I've ever played. I know taste is subjective, but I literally can't think of a worse pick from that year if I try.
I have to agree, it is my least favorite Tales together with Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Hearts is the only Tales where I did not really like the cast, which is otherwise always the strongest part of a Tales game. And I actually loved Zestiria and even Legendia.
First time watching your channel and it looks like I've found another person who loves turned-based as much as me because that's my bread and butter when it comes to JRPGs. I am okay with action (really depends on the game) and I don't like strategy (but am willing to give 3 Houses a chance). OMG Finally someone who likes guides! I am a completionist (generally) too and I honestly don't like missing stuff during a 1st playthrough. I really think the 2010s have been a great decade for JRPGs because for awhile, we were hardly getting any here in the west. Out of the ones listed here, only one I played (and is now one of my favs and got me to give Pokemon a try finally) was Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. This game, along with the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata, were my main reasons for getting the consul. I actually got it because I am Studio Ghibli fan and was expecting a charming story with fun chars and beautiful graphics. So yeah I love it! Loved it so much I got it again for the PS4 lol. OH! Have you heard of the Grandia Franchise? The first 2 games got PS4 ports, but you can only buy it online. I eventually plan on getting it since I have never played 1, and 2 is still one of my fav games of all time (it's #3, with Skies of Arcadia being #2, and Eternal Sonata being my fav).
Why do you keep calling them RPGs, but only have JRPGs on your channel? Like, there's nothing wrong with focusing on a certain subgenre, but there are countless other RPGs out there. One could easily think this top 10 actually covers ALL RPGs, yet it only covers JRPGs.

Exactly the ones I was thinking about. I'd also removed the tales of hearts game. And maybe DQ9 too. I liked Bravely second, but let's not get overboard either and call it one of the best game of the decade. Aside from that I tend to agree zith the rest :)
@@AndreGuesh I'm currently playing Zero no Kiseki Evolution on PSVita. So far it's amazing, and that's after getting the platinum trophies on CS1, CS2, and the Trails in the Sky Evolution trilogy. And from what I've heard, Ao No Kiseki is the best of the franchise. I'm looking forward to facing you know who in Ao no Kiseki. I already fought and beat her on Nightmare in Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution. Then I'll get to fight her again in CS3, which is sitting on my desk waiting to be played.
@@nickmaestro ahaah you won't be dissapointed with the fight, but be prepared to a lot of grinding if you want to do it in your first playthrough, she's a beast! There's actually a lot of non mandatory win battles in this game and they are all hard as hell! Ao no kiseki is also the best game if you're looking for a challenge ;)
I didn't know Studio Ghibli had anything to do with Jade Cocoon. I never played it as it looks like a Pokemon clone, but it also seems characteristically very different from typical Ghibli material.
@@acidwizard6528 While not directly involved with Ghibli the character designer for Jade Cacoon also did Castle in the Sky, Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, The Secret World of Arrietty, Howl's Moving Castle,My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service.
It's funny, but I think I got into JRPGs because I love anime. I am just a huge fan of the art style and the stories these Japanese creators come up with.
@referral madness Lol I know what anime means. I've always found Japanese animation to be aesthetically pleasing, more so then most current American cartoons, so I am always going to prefer it. However, since I hold it to a higher standard, I tend to be VERY picky, especially since I've seen so many types of themes over the years, so there are just some I am going to prefer over others.

DQ XI S is easily my favorite JRPG of the decade. Coming from someone that started with VII,and has played every DQ game to date,I'd agree with what you said personally. V still will always be my favorite DQ though.
Mine for each year, including WRPGs: 2010: Fallout: New Vegas 2011: Radiant Historia 2012: Xenoblade 2013: Ni no Kuni 2014: Divinity: Original Sin 2015: Pillars of Eternity 2016: Dark Souls 3 2017: Persona 5 2018: Dragon Quest 11 2019: It'll probably be The Outer Worlds, but I haven't got to play it yet because of Epic Games and their bullshit exclusivity deals. Other games I can wait, but I'll probably get it for the PS4 soon. For now, it's Fire Emblem: Three Houses.
Man, 2017 has to of been my favorite year of rpgs. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the winner for me, but there were plenty of other games I liked. Tales of Beseria, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, and Digimon Next Order hit in January. Whilst not what one might call 'RPG,' March had Nier Automata and Legend of Zelda: BotW, which I would like to mention. The Switch obviously dropped then too. April brought major attention to RPGs with Persona 5. June had FFXIV: Stormblood expansion for MMORPG fans. September had Trails of Cold Steel 3, Ys VIII, and Danganronpa V3 (Also not an RPG, but notable). Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon in November. And obviously, to close on the year, Xenoblade Chronicles 2. 2017 just had so much to choose from.

I have played 3 of the games on these games Nino kuni ( great game and loved nino kuni 2 just as much) Tales of Berseria (love all the tales games from vesperia onwards) Dragon Quest 11 (loved it)

But there's no Megami Tensei game :/ It's a good top. But sadly not that good. Seriously, SMT IV is one the best jrpgs I've ever played. It introduced me to SMT series which it's now my favorite one. Most of the games in the top are outstanding too tho.
Dragon Quest IX was still an amazing game in its own right. Taking advantage of the connectivity of the DS really added to the experience of the game being able to play with friends. Exchanging maps and others things was also very satisfying. Plus it has the best customization of any Dragon Quest game out there...something as a long time Dragon Quest fan feel they should have continued. While not as good as VIII or XI, IX still did allot of things right and was overall a very enjoyable experience. Its a game I'm glad we got, and really wish they take notes from.
JRPGS do nothing but disappoint nowadays. Octopath Traveler was horrible. Bravely Default was cringe. The one tales game I played Xillia was cringe. I finally played Lost Odyssey, it's boring. Final Fantasy 15 I could spit on unfinished piece of shit made 13 better in comparison. It's that bad. NI No Kuni was amazing though. Only game listed. Persona 3 was kinda repetitive and boring. So not sure if 5 will be up my alley. I have it though
what makes that dragon quest game hard to pick up is the monster design for me. I only made it about an hour or so and the silly blue meanie look makes it hard to take the game seriously at all. Same goes for the NiNoKuni stuff. Just looks too kid orientated though I did recently pick up the sequel that looks better.

I really like FF 13-2, I think the soundtrack is so good. I think it is better than FF 13-1 and Lightning's return. The soundtrack has some metal, rock, and fusion stuff added in which I thought was cool. I rate it 8/10. I still have not played a 10/10 rpg recently. Earthbound, Pokemon Emerald, and FF 9 are all 10/10 games to me that come to my mind right now. I have played many Rpgs in my time. Some people don't like the typical RPG fighting style games though which I can understand. There are games which some categorize as being Action RPGs including Terrinigma and A Link to the past. Aren't all video games with actual characters technically RPGs because you play a role as a character? 🤯😹 Ahh well.
I think it's great that I've either played, and beaten, or want to play most of these! Except the 2 Tales of games I guess, I've never been much of a Tales of fan. I do have Tales of the Abyss on 3DS, but most the time I don't care. I'm pretty much 100% in agreement with you about Dragon Quest! I love Dragon Quest IX, and the series in general, but I probably wouldn't put it as my number 1 just because of some games we missed. Edit: OK sorry I forgot to say this earlier, but Awesome video! Only 2 games I'm not interested in, maybe 3 I'm a maybe on Ni no Kuni, but still great video!

Tales of innocence r has a translation patch you can add to the vita or pstv if you have it hacked to play. Easy to do and worth it, there are an abundance of games that have been fan translated because they never made it to the west for the vita.

Xenoblade Chronicles is one of those rare games that only come around maybe once a generation. It was something special that was only hindered by the Wii. So excited for the Switch remaster.

Go with the 3ds remake it's the same game with extras. And I have to say for me it is my favorite 3ds game, beating out the bravely series and a link between worlds.

This is not a new game, this is the same game from 2012 running 720p with inconsistently low resolution, in addition to lowish texture quality. The remaster was disapointing they've pretty much only polished up the main character models and added a epilogue for full price
jfray G. The remaster might have been disappointing, but the game itself certainly wasn’t. It was my first time playing it and it was completely worth it for me. Even if the remaster wasn’t as great as others, the game itself is still intact (unlike another remake)
I personally love my vita as it had some of my favorite action jrpg in the form of ys memories in celceta and ys lacrimosa of Dana. Totally agree with you for ni no kuni and dq11

SMT is a very niche game that only applies to "hardcore gamers" for lack of a better word. It's not very polished and has a stronger focus on gameplay.

It is up there no doubt. Persona 5 is definitely among the top JRPGs of all time and I have played a lot of JRPGs over the years. Definitely one of the best stories. Dragon Quest 5 also comes to mind in that regard.
Persona its a waifu animu sim rpg. SMT Its hardcore philosophic demon summoning dungeon crawling rpg where you kill god and lucifer to become a god or a demon king. They have a different tatget audience but still loved both. The dating sim in persona is still anoying for me mostly cause all the girls in persona 5 are ugly for me
Don't forget the Digital Devil Saga series so under rated. By the way Persona 3 was way better than P5

@@kr1me2000 That explains a lot. Three Houses is more like the older Fire Emblems on the GBA, Gamecube and Wii story wise. The only fault was the week system it bored me like Persona dose in the aspect. I find the people who only played the DS ones hate the older (better) type of Fire Emblem personally I hated Awakening and Fates. Echos was good, but that was also a remake of an older game.

Personally Xenoblade is my RPG of the Decade. However one that I feel gets overlooked on the Wii is "The Last Story".
The character designs are some of my favorites, I love the music and story, but I will admit the combat might put some people off. Still if you haven't played it I 100% recommend it.

I totally agree with you. Sure it has its flaws like the story but the Soundtrack is amazing, the battle system is fluid, and the world is gorgeous. Here in Germany Xenoblade Chronicles X still has way too many haters for the wrong reasons.
Xenoblade Chronicles is hands down my favorite RPG franchise AND my favorite Nintendo franchise ( though EarthBound remains my favorite game of all time ). All 3 games thus far have been among the best experiences I ever had with a game, between the story & characters, the incredible soundtracks ( the lack of any X songs in Smash feels so very wrong ), the gameplay and the worlds we explore they can't be beat IMO. Hopefully X gets a Switch port though...it very much deserves a 2nd chance, I know I'd happily buy it again ( I did but the original Xenoblade 3 times now across Wii, New 3DS and Switch )

@@michaelk639 Characters and Monster Autoattack when in Range and you get to use various skills much like in MMO's.
Skills effects changes/improves with your positioning and in what order you use them.
Most of the time it's a stat check really, but if you don't grind too much it's quite a challenge.
Combat may look boring in vids, but I assure you it's super fun of you play yourself.

I agree about Cold Steel 3, easily the best JRPG of the year. I had high expectations for it going in and yet it fully exceeded them. Outside the fantastic story and characters that par for the course for the trails series, The battle system was improved so much from the solid battle system of the first two games (hell, I even gushed about how they improved the damn fishing) and the pacing was fantastic (I spent 120+ hours on the game but boy did it not feel like it). Glad to see you cooled down from the ending lol (though I understand, it took me a bit of time to process the ending).
Also, I think I might be the only person on the planet who thinks cold steel 1 is better paced then cold steel 2. That middle section of CS 2 really dragged on and on for me, culminating in that tedious as hell Zemurian ore quest. CS 1 never dragged for me that bad personally.
Yer I can see that but I think the reason I like cs2 over 1 is cause it just feels faster maybe cause there's no thors sections to slow down the pase. Also cs2 gives me Sara and Sharon for more then an hr so yer
I mean a lot of people view CS2 as the worst trails game because its such a mess. Divertissement just fits weirdly into the flow of the story and reverie corridor is just filler to have a second final boss when infernal castle was a good way to stop with some epilogue telling us the things happening in crossbell.
The entire second act also reminds me of SC chapter 8.
CS1 and CS2 could've probably been 1 game if they trimmed a few scenes that weren't essential.
Going from azure to cs1 and cs2 must give a man some crazy whiplash.
@@luminous3558 While agree that CS 2 is the worst Trails game, It's still a great game (that suffers from pacing issues but I also think SC also suffers from pacing issues as well). Even the worst Trails game is better than the most games (I'd personally play CS 2 over any Final Fantasy game).

While I haven't played as many modern RPGs in the 2010s (I've been spending time catching up on classics) but I must say Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is my game of the decade. It just captured my heart and I love its world and characters.
A few others are of course the original Xenoblade, Mario & Luigi Dream Team (which I actually didn't play til this year) and I can promise you, I'll be spending some quality time with all the games on this list

Paul Hermosillo Haro never thought of Shulk as perfect, he is flawed, he also grows throughout the game and has some really good writing behind his character and amazing voice acting, I can’t say the same for Rex at all, but that’s an issue with xenoblade 2 in general, poor voice acting and story drag down a semi interesting character that at times feels like an exact carbon copy of Shulk
Witcher 3, Persona 5, Dragon Quest XI (specially on the Switch), FFXV (I love the game but I understand why some people found it lacking), Skyrim are personally my favorites
Great list! It’s funny to think that if it wasn’t for you, I, and others, that we almost didn’t get “Xenoblade Chronicles” here in America! Especially now that it is one of the top JRPG series and its sequels were important titles for the Wii U and Switch! I love the Trails series, I really hope the Trails in the Sky trilogy and Crossbell arc along with the Cold games make it to Switch so more people can enjoy them. Personally I found the first “Trails of Cold Steel” game to be faster paced and more interesting than part 2, but both are incredible games!

DQ XI was fantastic. I saw Octopath in your intro and had hoped to see it on your list, but since it came out the same year as DQ XI, I can see why it didn’t make the cut. Keep up the great work, man.

Octopath Traveller is a game I really wanted to like, but it seems a lot of games that bulk on up RPG battle mechanics too much tend to feel burdensome after a time. First couple of hours is the honeymoon period: "this battle system is awesome" - hour 3-8 is the denial period: "Wish these battles are over, but at least I like the battle system, right?" then over that it's either "I'm glad there's an auto-battle" or "Let's just get this game over with!"
Unfortunately, because it's against what I want to enjoy, I find it is the slick and simplistic tried and true mechanics that tend to be the games I can play for dozens of hours with. Xenoblade, easy and snappy, Dragon Quest easy and snappy, Final Fantasy the same... but then Square's "B-games" for lack of a better term, but Bravely Default, Crystal Chronicles, I am Setsuna, and Octopath Traveler all have these gimmicks that seem really fun at first; but, burdensome after engaging with them over and over again.

I have to disagree with you about the VITA. It had “Persona 3 Portable”, “Persona 4: Golden”, “Trails in the Sky 1&2”, “Trails of Cold Steel 1&2” and then almost all the other PSP rpg’s and tons of PS1 rpg’s (like “Suikoden II”. The VITA had two major issues in my opinion: the first, and biggest issue, was the seriously over-priced proprietary memory cards. The second was not having L2 and R2 buttons. If there was a system I felt was a waste of money it was the WII U. I literally bought it just for “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Tokyo Mirage Sessions”. While “Tokyo Mirage Sessions” wasn’t what I expected or wanted from an SMT & Fire Emblem crossover, it was still a good game and I’m glad it got a second chance on the Switch. Now if only “Xenoblade Chronicles X” and “Wind Waker HD” would get ported to Switch also I’d be a happy camper! And “Xenoblade Chronicles Remastered” looks AMAZING on the Switch!!!
They should have made it so you could change the difficulty of DQ11 after starting the game, I just went for normal difficulty thinking it would be well balanced, 60hrs in I was waiting for it to get difficult but nope, boringly easy and to hell if I'm going right back to the start to make it challenging.
I hope you try it with stronger enemies sooner or later. It makes the game legitimately terrifying.

I wouldn't say people in the west won't give dragon quest a chance I think it's has more to do with square enixs track record on releases and what platforms it comes to that and the fact that it seems to take square enix a century'to not only make the games but localize them as well compare that to final fantasy where they seem able to put out more then one during a console generation

I played radiant historia in a hacked ds... yes, I feel guilty but it was so amazing. The narrative was so thrilling. Loved it. You can consider as well I am Setsuna from tokyo rpg factory which recovers the essence of the old style games.

It's such a shame the ending was rushed. The Xillia cast is one of the very best in video games and the skits were consistently brilliant across both games.
I never finished it, but Persona 5 was a great JRPG. And I loved Final Fantasy XV and spent over 100 hours to complete it with the Platinum Trophy. :)

Also, I'm sorry, but you're off your rocker if you think Tales of Hearts R was the best RPG of 2014. It's bar none the worst game in the franchise, with a horrible cast, ugly towns, and arguably the worst ending to any game I've ever played. I know taste is subjective, but I literally can't think of a worse pick from that year if I try.
I have to agree, it is my least favorite Tales together with Symphonia: Dawn of the New World. Hearts is the only Tales where I did not really like the cast, which is otherwise always the strongest part of a Tales game.
And I actually loved Zestiria and even Legendia.
First time watching your channel and it looks like I've found another person who loves turned-based as much as me because that's my bread and butter when it comes to JRPGs. I am okay with action (really depends on the game) and I don't like strategy (but am willing to give 3 Houses a chance).
OMG Finally someone who likes guides! I am a completionist (generally) too and I honestly don't like missing stuff during a 1st playthrough.
I really think the 2010s have been a great decade for JRPGs because for awhile, we were hardly getting any here in the west. Out of the ones listed here, only one I played (and is now one of my favs and got me to give Pokemon a try finally) was Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch. This game, along with the PS3 version of Eternal Sonata, were my main reasons for getting the consul. I actually got it because I am Studio Ghibli fan and was expecting a charming story with fun chars and beautiful graphics. So yeah I love it! Loved it so much I got it again for the PS4 lol.
OH! Have you heard of the Grandia Franchise? The first 2 games got PS4 ports, but you can only buy it online. I eventually plan on getting it since I have never played 1, and 2 is still one of my fav games of all time (it's #3, with Skies of Arcadia being #2, and Eternal Sonata being my fav).
Why do you keep calling them RPGs, but only have JRPGs on your channel? Like, there's nothing wrong with focusing on a certain subgenre, but there are countless other RPGs out there. One could easily think this top 10 actually covers ALL RPGs, yet it only covers JRPGs.
Way better titles for those years than ni no kuni and xenoblade. Both had more cons than good you had to sloth through just to get that sweet story and beseria ugh
Missed three big ones: Persona 5, Ys Lacrimosa of Dana, and Nier Automata. Disagree on Tales of Hearts R, that thing was a snooze fest for me. Good list nonetheless.

Oh and Ao no Kiski (trails of azure) should definitely be in the mix. Best kiseki game for me.
@@AndreGuesh I'm currently playing Zero no Kiseki Evolution on PSVita. So far it's amazing, and that's after getting the platinum trophies on CS1, CS2, and the Trails in the Sky Evolution trilogy. And from what I've heard, Ao No Kiseki is the best of the franchise. I'm looking forward to facing you know who in Ao no Kiseki. I already fought and beat her on Nightmare in Trails in the Sky the 3rd Evolution. Then I'll get to fight her again in CS3, which is sitting on my desk waiting to be played.
@@nickmaestro ahaah you won't be dissapointed with the fight, but be prepared to a lot of grinding if you want to do it in your first playthrough, she's a beast! There's actually a lot of non mandatory win battles in this game and they are all hard as hell! Ao no kiseki is also the best game if you're looking for a challenge ;)

I didn't know Studio Ghibli had anything to do with Jade Cocoon. I never played it as it looks like a Pokemon clone, but it also seems characteristically very different from typical Ghibli material.

It's funny, but I think I got into JRPGs because I love anime. I am just a huge fan of the art style and the stories these Japanese creators come up with.

@referral madness Lol I know what anime means. I've always found Japanese animation to be aesthetically pleasing, more so then most current American cartoons, so I am always going to prefer it. However, since I hold it to a higher standard, I tend to be VERY picky, especially since I've seen so many types of themes over the years, so there are just some I am going to prefer over others.

DQ XI S is easily my favorite JRPG of the decade. Coming from someone that started with VII,and has played every DQ game to date,I'd agree with what you said personally.

Man, 2017 has to of been my favorite year of rpgs. Xenoblade Chronicles 2 was the winner for me, but there were plenty of other games I liked. Tales of Beseria, Gravity Rush 2, Yakuza 0, and Digimon Next Order hit in January. Whilst not what one might call 'RPG,' March had Nier Automata and Legend of Zelda: BotW, which I would like to mention. The Switch obviously dropped then too. April brought major attention to RPGs with Persona 5. June had FFXIV: Stormblood expansion for MMORPG fans. September had Trails of Cold Steel 3, Ys VIII, and Danganronpa V3 (Also not an RPG, but notable). Pokemon Ultra Sun/Moon in November. And obviously, to close on the year, Xenoblade Chronicles 2.
2017 just had so much to choose from.
BotW is not an RPG. It's Action Adventure. The only exception was Zelda II: The Adventure of Link.

But there's no Megami Tensei game :/ It's a good top. But sadly not that good. Seriously, SMT IV is one the best jrpgs I've ever played. It introduced me to SMT series which it's now my favorite one. Most of the games in the top are outstanding too tho.
It was pretty BS that they went to the DS with the main line Dragon Quest series. To me, DQ11 is the true next DQ after DQ8 on the PS2.
Dragon Quest IX was still an amazing game in its own right. Taking advantage of the connectivity of the DS really added to the experience of the game being able to play with friends. Exchanging maps and others things was also very satisfying. Plus it has the best customization of any Dragon Quest game out there...something as a long time Dragon Quest fan feel they should have continued.
While not as good as VIII or XI, IX still did allot of things right and was overall a very enjoyable experience. Its a game I'm glad we got, and really wish they take notes from.

JRPGS do nothing but disappoint nowadays. Octopath Traveler was horrible. Bravely Default was cringe. The one tales game I played Xillia was cringe. I finally played Lost Odyssey, it's boring. Final Fantasy 15 I could spit on unfinished piece of shit made 13 better in comparison. It's that bad. NI No Kuni was amazing though. Only game listed. Persona 3 was kinda repetitive and boring. So not sure if 5 will be up my alley. I have it though

what makes that dragon quest game hard to pick up is the monster design for me. I only made it about an hour or so and the silly blue meanie look makes it hard to take the game seriously at all. Same goes for the NiNoKuni stuff. Just looks too kid orientated though I did recently pick up the sequel that looks better.

I really like FF 13-2, I think the soundtrack is so good. I think it is better than FF 13-1 and Lightning's return. The soundtrack has some metal, rock, and fusion stuff added in which I thought was cool. I rate it 8/10. I still have not played a 10/10 rpg recently. Earthbound, Pokemon Emerald, and FF 9 are all 10/10 games to me that come to my mind right now. I have played many Rpgs in my time. Some people don't like the typical RPG fighting style games though which I can understand. There are games which some categorize as being Action RPGs including Terrinigma and A Link to the past. Aren't all video games with actual characters technically RPGs because you play a role as a character? 🤯😹 Ahh well.
I think it's great that I've either played, and beaten, or want to play most of these! Except the 2 Tales of games I guess, I've never been much of a Tales of fan. I do have Tales of the Abyss on 3DS, but most the time I don't care. I'm pretty much 100% in agreement with you about Dragon Quest! I love Dragon Quest IX, and the series in general, but I probably wouldn't put it as my number 1 just because of some games we missed.
Edit: OK sorry I forgot to say this earlier, but Awesome video! Only 2 games I'm not interested in, maybe 3 I'm a maybe on Ni no Kuni, but still great video!
