This is correct. Remember Ten Hag said himself before the season even started that they weren't ready yet... maybe that's what he meant
Maybe... just maybe.👍🏼
This comment needs more likes 👍
Can remember that indeed was that in preseason?
@@stephenmcguire8545before Community Shield
Wait until they can do this to top 6 teams on a regular basis.
I’ve been watching United since Best,Law and Charlton. People used to talk about players being in or out of form or being 100% match fit or not. Now people talk about tactics as though nothing else matters. We had one outfield player against Spurs who had a full pre season and he (Rashford) was horribly out of form. That Performance was littered with individual errors. We will get better as the players get into top physical condition. Garnacho’s best performance of the season coming after he missed the trip to Argentina was no coincidence. Hoyland is also coming into peak condition. Ugarte needs a few more games to get there . We’ve still got a lack of depth in midfield and forward positions so we need luck with injuries but we are better than the results so far would suggest. I think we will get stronger over the next month or so. Top 4 will be tough but not impossible Onwards and upwards.
Yup.
In 2 weeks they will get that sharpness playing with each other. Then we will get a sense of what they’re capable.
Spot on Ste. It feels great when we win so I understand why people get carried away. But people need to understand this isn’t a tactical issue, it’s a performance issue. The players are coming to terms with the system and I believe these players can beat anyone when they’re all on song. That’s a bit when.
1st szn already shown we can beat anyone, we shouldn’t let the media tamper with us being united as a whole.
Playing Martinez at LB helped from a structural standpoint. Opposing teams know that if their RW or RWB press Dalot when he has the ball in LB, he has no choice but to go inside to midfield or backwards. The left footed pass down the line to the winger just isn’t natural for him. Mbeumo is an excellent presser, and part of the reason that Brentford score early goals, so for Martinez to have that one or two extra passes at his disposal whilst being pressed made a lot of difference - which resulted in Mbeumo doing very little.
Agree totally pal
In all honesty, you're very correct 💯
🎯
I think Licha at LB can genuinely be a solid option for us, especially when Yoro joins the rotation in the middle of that 3
Facts bro
Ste when Brentford were winning 1-0 the pundits were saying they were playing well. When Utd won 2-1 the same pundits and reporters were saying that they were a very poor Brentford side , NOT that Utd played well in the 2nd half , so another negative statement about us just to keep the pressure on . Fluffin winkers the lot of em 😅
Totally agree. Was a much better version of what we’ve already seen. Big difference for me this season is the possession/ball retention. Think Martinez needs to stay at left back with Yoro coming in to partner DeLigt. Tides us over until we can get a reliable left back in one of the forth coming windows.
Shaw and Malacia will be back soon.

People slagging Ten Hag off are annoying AF. If the players haven't lost faith in him, which they clearly haven't, he is doing something right!!!
So are you happy with our league position

@@jonathangallagher3137 did you listen to anything Ste said? Ten Hag himself said, everyone on the team is angry with the league position. But if you look at our stats on the flip of our record, we're a better team than our results.

Hojland seems to be wrestling with defenders less and creating half a yard for himself instead, and it looks promising. Bro looks dangerous!
Well said Ste
Couldn't agree more
Great video 🙂
Well said Ste👍
Ste tells no BS, only facts 💯didn't know i'd ever find a united fan channel this legit
Completely agree that mostly it was better implementation of tactics, but certain tweaks were clearly visible for example Rashford was playing narrower and Bruno was occupying the left half space rather than the right.
Exactly and dalot wasn’t used as an inverted full back that went into the midfield leaving rashford isolated
Or maybe the reason Dalot had to play inverted all this while was because he is predominately right footed.
Spot on👍🏻
GGMU❤
Agreed
The biggest difference I'd seen in the Brentford game was that the players had more fight in them, going in hard on those 50/50 challenges & duels was good to see. So many games lost because we not getting that 2nd ball & lack of effort
Yes, Ste. I've been preaching this exact message. Happy to hear it!
Spot-on Ste
I agree. I did think rashford played that right hand side much better. Got much narrower. For all the stick he gets. He is needed he is our best longpasser in the team. Hoijland had his best performance since joining united and Martinez was much better at left back. I still believe if you play casemiro and erikson in the mid. United will beat any team outside the obvious top teams. When we play the better teams or in tricky away games. You will need running power. I think the extra experience in the team executed the tactics to a higher standard. The stick casemiro has had is a joke you can clearly tell he wants to win.
2nd half was literally the entire sway game vs Palace with the finishing being superior.
Agree we played better in second half but this was a typical one half performance from us!
We’ve been described by many as a team that does well in moments. This game was one those moments games!
I’m still massively unconvinced.
Well said Ste, I think another observation I took from the game is that the players are now more comfortable with the 3-2-5 that we saw us doing in preseason and we can play that to a higher standard than the 3-1-6 we have seen for a long time previously
Quite right. Often experts don't emphasize the role of players in performance. Coaches get blamed most of the times. But definitely there are problems with ETHas coach (buying choice of players, selection, changes etc).
You have to admit both Dalot and Rashford have been on the left all season and Martinez a left footed player was playing in the left. It’s completely different to the whole season so far. Bruno played deep eriksen played ten we had a fit Hojland so you got the Danish connection. Rashford gets double marked which allowed Garnacho to be free and boy did he exploit it.
He did change things a bit
Off the ball shape is more compact
Two central midfield playing closer to each other , Erickson and Casemiro
Also the build up play Onana being used as a third cd with evens and de light playing on either side of Onana
But just a lil bit of tweaks, not a tactical revolution
exactly what ive been saying, having dalot at LB is such weakness because hes so poor at defending so having him not in his usual RB position was just a bad decision by ten shag
Nice analysis. Crazy thing is that there are only like 10% left handed/footed people in the world.
How hard it must be for clubs to find suitable players on the left side...
Ste this is the reason why I watch your podcast as soon as I receive the notification. You tend to speak with logic unlike other so called United supporters on other channels (United View casts) who tend to make it a habit to go on our rivals podcast to bash our manager then celebrate whenever we win a game. Keep up the good work bro.
Good to see Ste managed to find the rest of his body. Was getting a bit concerned about the floating head 🤣🤣
Ste, I disagree. If you look at the game vs brentford we lined up alot in a 4 4. 2. Especially when we dont have the ball. Rashford switched with bruno alot. There was changes made.
When it's good it's really good. In fact when it's good, it's sometimes breathtaking, and by far the most attractive football in the PL.
most attractive football my arse 🤣
@@sg500-o8xbitterness can kill. Heal your heart of pain and anger
I thing you are right @stephenhowson. It is same stuff only that the missing part (execution) was missing and we got goals. Man Utd is a news seller which is why media gets obsessed with anything negative or positive that Utd does directly or indirectly.
You are so right. It was a mental thing all the time. Rashford perfect assist on Carnacho and perfect finish from Carnacho like players in control and thinking. They are able if they work together making it easy for the team.
Love the level headed way you analyse games. You are the only one i see among the media who does this so really appreciate it. Its a process and we need to be patient. People just want easy answers and get carried away easily. Please lets back the manager. GGMU
They just need to play with aggresion more. I remember hearing something about Liverpool listening to heavy metal pre-match during Klopp's time, not sure how true this is but you could see it in their play. And what are the rules around stimulants prematch because I think if we had a squad of Vardy levels of energy, we could be so dangerous.
Hojlund definitely dropped back and got involved more instead rushing to the box, he was much better the second half.
Absobloodylutely.
The underlying issue has, for a long time, been the effort and execution that the players put in. When they turn up, stick in a shift and execute the plan, results have been favourable (cup final last season for example), but far too often there have been too many going missing out on the grass.
Coasting on the coat tails of past success is not good enough. It's time for the players to roll up their sleeves and put in some graft if they want to get this once great club back to the successes it had.
Players actually executing tactics? We barely seem them trying. But seriously having someone left footed at leftback and a proper no.9 was more tactically fitting.
Good video Ste this is a slap in the face to all the people moaning that ten hags been here 3 years and still not style of play… waahhh ten hag out waaahhh.
I think Hojland played with his back to goal much better than previously and we were able to break a lot quicker instead of facing a 10 men behind the ball.
There was a match going fan on Talkshite after the game, saying he wont go bk to OT until the manager is gone.
Honestly, ppl have lost the plot.
Fortunately there are thousands of people waiting to take his place
We won that game playing exactly how we've played against midtable sides, except we scored our chances
Hey, what is Ste using for the tactics manager?
Thank you, Ste! Agree.
I take your point and you're right. To a degree. You're understating (not intentionally) the intentional selection of Licha at left back and Johnny at CB and Dalot at right back. Those tactical selection choices had a big impact. Not revolutionary, for sure. But it IS revolutionary for ETH because of how fucking stubborn he is.
Injuries didn’t leave a lot of options there. If Shaw or Malacia was healthy, do you think ETH would have made a tactical decision to start Martinez at LB?
@@davidgriffith1552 Fair point. Maz was selectable and that wouldn't be unlike ETH/the med team to bring him back too early. But again, fair point
@@DuskPatrol I thought (*heresy*) that Jonny and Licha played really well, and we looked solid at the back. I kind of wish it was a tactical choice…I’ve never wanted to see United in a three at the back setup, but it might suit our personnel (or lack thereof).
@@davidgriffith1552 Yeah, same here. I want to believe ETH made the tweaks because he's adapting. But stumbling on the solution is almost as good as coming up with the solution I guess? Here's to hoping we keep looking solid.
Videos like this are the reason Ste’s is the only fan channel I watch, only one that talks with actual common sense
How many great performances have we had under ETH? City in the cup final and the Liverpool win? 2 games in what? 100?
We’ve been poor since he walked in the door. Can’t wait until he’s gone.
Decision making on the pitch keeps us back.
I said 3-4 games ago to put Lissa into the Left back position, I feel vindicated, lol
Spot on Stephen
It’s about new young team trying to gel and that’s all it is. All of sudden we will click and we will start tearing teams apart. As fans we need to be patient and the back them, The proofs in the pudding it takes time and consistency will come.
While I get that’s its down to the players too but you can’t say that in defence of Ten Haag and then say Southgate is such a bad option. Because like you’ve said dozens of times “People over estimate the managers impact”
They do... but I can also say whatever I like about Southgate being a bad option. Because I've never seen Ten Hag set up a team so obviously incorrect as I have Southgate.
@@StephenHowson I agree Ste 1 million percent about Southgate. Obviously the Fa cup win was great but feel the impending doom of a Southgate taking over played a small part in some people backing Ten Haag too. I know the stats don’t back it but the eye test for Ramus seemed like he tried to link play up more, even playing a few flicks around the corner. I’d like to think Ten Haag is trying to change the tactics because since the turn of last year it’s been pretty terrible in the league
hear me out, I know this sounds mental. But because it was sunny day - the forwards were encouraged to shoot more, which stopped some of the 'tryiing to walk it over the line stuff' we often see. The impact was we were more direct.
????????
Re-read it and ask your mum to help with any difficult words
Thank you Steve finally someone sees it 🫡🇾🇪 been saying we be playing well this season all season roll on 21
many awful performances this season
Nailed it Ste. Now, can they do it again, that’s the tough part.
Will we see De Ligt, Yoro & Martinez back 3 with inverted RB? Is this why we haven’t pushed to sign an experienced LB?
I do think it help having a right footed RB and a left footed LB
The thing we cannot accept is : United can beat anyone...then tmrw...United can be beat by anyone. The winning consistency is wat is needed.
It's obvious that Rashford can't play anywhere near as well without an attacking full back.
The new tactical switch seems to be fitting our available personnel much better. Need some convincing results from now on to make it tick better.
For years we have been poor at execution. When players hold the ball up well and do not give it away so much then of course the flow and tactics look better. Not rocket science.
United in full flow, like on Saturday, is a joy to behold ❤
Totally agree 👍🏻
Well said Ste...🎉
It’s a bit of both, but more in execution and I’ll deliberate with the disclaimer that I’m just a regular fan.
There are small tactical tweaks that are actually significant and they’re mostly in the patterns of play. The up-back-through adage actually clicked, because it was simplified. There were rotations, but definitely not so many, players job is a bit easier. Dalot is obviously better at RB, but him inverting at LB was actually very useful in buildup - problem was it taxed him so much to invert, over/underlap and defend that he struggled with it and made mistakes he ordinarily wouldn’t.
We’ve been talking about how in ETH’s case it’s not about being clueless as often stated, but being too smart for the team’s good. He overcomplicated things. With fewer rotations - they were still there, just judiciously used - and more natural work for (mostly) everyone involved they looked better, because they could do their jobs. I’m not slating ETH here, I just think him and Ruud and Rene realised they are better off with a slightly more straightforward style. System is the same.
Plus, people are getting fitter and are adapting, so they perform better individually.
And an overlooked detail is Onana. He’s getting more confident and actually played as a ball-playing keeper. Offered us so much in the buildup.
I thoroughly agree with your message though. Let’s not get carried away either way. We did not suddenly turn into an unstoppable juggernaut. We weren’t really crap before either. Fans are fickle. Look at what the Chelsea fans are doing to Sancho now, same people boasted how they robbed us.
Yeh Ste, more tactical breakdowns please. Cool to see.
I actually agree with howson the players just played their roles to a decent level. People love pver index performances and go over the top with a positive result nothing revolutionary was done 😎🙌🏿.
UTD major flaw is that we allow Bruno to play
Dalot is woeful at left back we have to sign one as a priority
The only difference this game had, was Hojlund doing a better job than Zirkzee.
Judging Zirkzee's 20 minutes performance 😂
Maybe it's because Fergy's influence had been removed
Ste, this is all absolutely spot on 💯
So, we need a fit left footed left back. Roll on January if the other two aint happening.
Think you’re being majority optimistic about the state of the team and season so far. Which is good because I’m a miserable prick most of the time.
Man this team is awesome idgaf what people say❤ETH all the way
You weren’t wrong using tactical masterclass. Its what gets the clicks
someone explain why Stephen has a lot of U of Oklahoma merch xD
Agreed
Show this to ronaldo that muppet.
Excelleny stuff Ste. As much as i hate the 4231 formation that we start with it isn't always represented when in possesion of the ball and at time out of possesion. As a result we have (the normal intelligent United fan not the reactionary glory hunters or the press and media) have noticed an improvement in performances on the pitch in many of our games, not all of them but deffo better than last year. Unfortunately some results and performances have been poor or very poor because of the players. They just have to do better, much better when on the field of play. Our consistency of good player/team performances will determine our attempt at glory this season. By that i mean whether we win trophies or not. For me, much more important than league postion at the mo. ETH trying to instill a winning mentally into the squad is, again for me, our main aim.
The difference was that Brentford were crap
I keep saying it your not gonna learn that style of football in 10 games or even a season and a half, I seen what they have been trying to do since day one when ten hag took over! United have been a counter attacking team for years and to get away from that into this new system with take some time not to mention new players. And Ineos knows this because they football people
Ten Hag stays
We're 11th on xPts you melt ☺️
Apt
Rashford has seldom played (narrow) RW this season and wasn't playing his natural game, although he did well in the 2nd half. Rashford has been playing LW mostly and played reasonably well this season from a creative perspective.
So it was different in some regards and the 1st half wasn't good overall from the team.
It helped Bruno was running around like an headless counterproductive chicken. Which may seem tactical tweak. But I guess Ste has to do his usual of spinning things to EtH's favour
The problem I have with Dalot is, he makes big mistakes and they're often costly. The ease of which Pillock disposed of him or ill go to games against Liverpool, where Trent constantly exposed his lack of awareness. Big moment costly.
I like Hojlund. Quality. I defended Ten Hag in amongst the shit show. When these boys click, theres a good amount of talent there. Once he gets some idea through these guys, he can evolve his ideas.
Im the first to pick up a bad game from Bruno, but he looked much more composed and threatening. He needs to be that player. Composed and threatening. Not sporadic and reckless.
Dalot takes on more responsibility than most so of course he's going to make mistakes. No defender is perfect.
I hate we don’t have a fun playing style. Honestly games are a bore and every time i’m left disappointed.
If what you say are the truth, that Ten Hag is not the problem, then all we need are 11 World Class players and full bench of top star players. Either from the training progress or new signing. Congrats, Ste ... you just found the way for United back into title challenger. Now the question, how you train Rashford and Garnacho play like Diego Maradona and Ronaldinho? ... how you train Bruno play like Rui Costa? How do you train Hojlund play like Didier Drogba ?
trash manager average players
You’re right that the system didn’t change but when you have a team of international players even a crap system can be made to work for a half. Terrible first half then we were fired up by a perceived injustice. Scored 2 elite finishes, which papered over what was just another chaotic 90 mins. He’s had over 120 games to perfect his approach and yet we’re still scratching around for a home win against Brentford and calling it progress! 🤯
To be honest, someone who wrote about this win as a lucky win or a win that came out of nowhere is much closer then you saying its a tactical masterclass. Good Lord, our players two decent halves this season.
First time ever I'm first 😂
First of the losers posting meaningless drivel.
First of the lovers posting meaningless drivel.
Foxtrot Oscar FascistTube.
Nothing has changed with United, the difference was we scored 2, Brentford scored1, the next game will be the telling story, football is a simple thing, don't give away stupid goals, and score more than your opponents, Ten Hag and his tactics will be undone again soon, and watch the comments, the euphoria will dissipate again, there is no consistency in tactics and no plan B, Saturday plan b worked, up the ante, get out there and fight for the badge, we cannot lose another home match, that was the tactic, no players did anything different other than press more aggressively and actually fight to be first to the ball.
So Ten Hag wins and it's nothing to do with tactics because his tactics are shit? And when he loses it's "Ah see I told you his tactics were shit", good grief black & white thinking at its finest.
I strongly disagree.
If it did not come off, but now it it has. Something must be different, whether it's attitude, tactical or mindset.
No go back and watch the other games
Ten Haag has had a lot of time already, I will be stunned if he manages to turn United around
He 100% will
