  • When I was 14, I locked himself in my bedroom and tried to overdose on cold medication and beer. I attempted suicide again in his late 20s. My case was far from unusual. Depression is so common among young people that it's fair to call it an epidemic. But it's an epidemic that can beaten. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

The personal experience shared about depression and suicide attempts is a powerful reminder of the mental health challenges that many individuals face. It's crucial to acknowledge that mental health is an essential aspect of overall well-being and must be a priority for medical professionals and society as a whole. Medical ethics require that healthcare providers prioritize the well-being of their patients, including their mental health needs. The stigma surrounding mental illness often prevents individuals from seeking help or receiving the support they need, and this needs to change. Increased access to mental healthcare services, public education and awareness programs, and early intervention and prevention strategies can help address the epidemic of depression and suicide attempts. It's inspiring to hear that depression can be overcome, and we must continue to work towards creating a more supportive and understanding society where individuals can seek help and receive the care they need without fear of judgment or ostracism.

Such as great message Dr. Ono - thanks so much for sharing. Stories like yours give a strong framework for discussion in classrooms, amongst friends and elsewhere. Services are needed but role models are needed to make it safe for some to use them.

In California, hospital emergency departments are dealing with an ever increasing influx of mental health patients. ER wait times are getting longer and longer, and people suffering mental health crisis who are put on "5150 holds" are kept in intensive observation rooms until Crisis Social Workers can find them a bed in another facility that specializes in psychiatric issues.
The mental health system here in California is terribly inadequate. More kids are on cell phones all the time instead of being outside playing, eating processed food and soda pop, or they are now dealing with cyber bullying & confusing gender identity issues that lead to depression, self harming (cutting) and suicidal or homicidal ideations.
Nurses & Doctors have to do more & more charting and increasing paperwork, leaving them with less time to spend actually taking care of patients, especially those in mental crisis.
Most patients blame the hospital staff for their long wait times without understanding this.
That makes the medical staff seem uncaring and disorganized. ER nurses are some of the most talented "multi-taskers" in the world. (Almost like a busy Mom :))
Until some serious revamping of the healthcare system, this crisis will only get worse as increasing homelessness, drugs & alcohol all add fuel to those already suffering mental issues. Next time you're in an ER, look around you, and you'll realize this to be true...

Thank you Dr Ono for sharing your story of trying to take your own life at 14. Thank you for having the courage to speak up and share your story of mental health struggle. And, thanks for sharing some different organizations that are standing up and getting loud about mental health. I'll have a peek.
