  • Great 1962 Ford Galaxie Commercials!
The Ford Galaxie is a full-sized car that was built in the United States by Ford for model years 1959 through to 1974. The name was used for the top models in Ford's full-size range from 1958 until 1961, in a marketing attempt to appeal to the excitement surrounding the Space Race. For 1962, all full-size Fords wore the Galaxie badge, with "500" and "500/XL" denoting the higher series. The Galaxie 500/LTD was introduced for 1965 followed by the Galaxie 500 7-Litre for 1966. The Galaxie 500 prefix was dropped from the LTD in 1966, and from the XL in 1967;[2] however the basic series structuring levels were maintained. The "regular" Galaxie 500 continued below the LTD as Ford's mid-level full-size model from 1965 until its demise at the end of the 1974 model year.[3]:401-42
The Galaxie was the competitor to the high-volume full sized Chevrolet Impala.[4] [TAKE FROM WIKI]

While in college, I owned a white 4 door 1962 Galaxie 500 with a copper interior. Huge tuna-boat with a 352 CI engine. Ran like a charm and only had to replace the battery and brakes. What fun it was, and stylish too.

Back in the day we owned a 1962 Ford Club Wagon. (Minivan built on Falcon Chassis with a 200 CI 6 cylinder engine) Family took a vacation and had to drive through the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. Maximum up hill speed 20 MPH. (No interstate highway). After vacation dad drove straight back to the local Ford dealership and traded the 1962 “SLED” for a 1962 Galaxie 500 XL with the 390 CI engine. White exterior with black bucket seat interior. Ah,the joy of real horsepower on the open road.

Great ads, loved them! However, I did notice that all were two door models, not one sedan or wagon. While I understand that the XL models were more than likely only two door, it seems like all of these were some of the first stabs at 60s youth advertising by Ford. One line stated "don't be square"...

Mine was a '63 Fairlane. Black with gray, 2 door, 13 inch wheels, 170 CID engine with a 200 head (no idea why, it was like that when I got it), 3-speed upstairs, AM radio. No A/C, no power brakes, 4-wheel drums, no power steering, nothing extra. I miss it every day. But back then, lol... it was just another 20+ year old saggy ass machine that, on the best day of its life, couldn't get out of its own way if it had to. I would just about bet that I had the slowest car out of all the other kids in school, but it was also the coolest. Everyone else got their parents' hand me down 10 year old mid 70s whatever it was that they had already replaced with a new one. I got to buy mine. Which was precisely why I didn't beat the hell out of it. For some reason, it had chronic generator problems... like every few months or so it needed a new generator and a voltage regulator. None of that mattered though, it was still a fun car and easy to drive, even without any of the power accessories.

Promoting 6000 mile oil changes, Ford must have sure been caught off guard the next year when Chrysler offered a 5 year 50,000 mile warranty. Ford wouldn't dare do that with 6000 mile oil changes.
