I hope to be getting the new Qashqai this year. I think the flappy paddles are a bit of a gimmick on a car of this kind, as the xtronic gearbox, doesn't actually have any real gears inside of it, just a system of belts. The fact that you can only use them in sport mode, doesn't make them very practical for snow, I would suggest. I think they are for budding Lewis Hamilton's, who would like a more spirited drive along twisty country lanes. Like you; I would probably keep the car in Drive and let it select the fo gears for me. It seems to be able to do that very well. Thank you for your insight, it was very entertaining.
I have an older auto and my low milage driving flattens my battery quicker so I use the paddles to hold a lower gear at higher mph to increase the rpm and recharge the battery quicker.
I was driving my new Qashqai it was in drive mode I tried using the paddles I could feel the car changing gear, when I came to a roundabout I had to stop, took off and it went round the roundabout screaming its head. i had to use the paddles to change gear don’t know what I did wrong can you help???
John, just try not to use them. one side drops down the other side up. id you keep pressing the down shift you will get stuck in the gear. If you move the drive selector again to Drive the car will go back to its auto setting

Wrong you have to double shift d twice will change it to ds(manual) mode
