I love how on board you were with this one.
The game came with a 20+ page manual. More than half of that was dedicated to explaining the movesets of each piece. It also explained all of the rules, the spells each side could use, the conditions of the different battle arenas, and the two win states: defeat the opponent's army or occupy all five flashing squares at any one point. There certainly was some depth to this thing, more so than just a quirky battle chess.

This was the most underrated game imo. I loved everything about it. Even the music. I know Dr Dre liked it. Listen to Dre Day.

Beyond learning what each piece does, you also need to know that the light side pieces are stronger on lighter/white squares and dark side pieces are stronger on darker/black squares. You can win by eliminating all of the opponent's pieces, or by capturing the five flashing power points. Which is also why you shouldn't move the wizard/sorceress off their home square unless you have to.

I had this on the Atari 1200XL. Graphics were more primitive than the NES version. My friend and I played against each other a lot when we were in high school. When I saw it for NES a year or so later, I had to try it. Since it came with a manual (I never had the manual for the Atari version, just the disc) it was only then that I learned about the dark and light squares affecting how much health the pieces started out with in a fight.

The commodore 64 version of this and Archon II are both spectacular.

One of the games that defined my gaming life (yep, i'm that old and I played it on the Commodore 64). An amazing mix of statergy and skill. The second game is just as good and there was a spiritual succcessor of the original Xbox. I can't remember the name of it though.
Edit: The game on the Xbox was called Wrath Unleashed

I also grew up playing this on the nes. I just bought it again and I'm getting my ass kicked lol. Couldn't remember how to play so I looked it up on TH-cam. This is the first video I've seen.

@@silverpandaws6230 Yeah, games back the didn't mess about. I remember the Basilisk being a right pain in the butt. Fast as hell and could hit quite hard. One of the reasons It had such replayability was learning all the pros and cons to the sides. You had to get quite good at most of the characters to win a game. Every piece on the board played differently, best look online for stats for the pieces. You can go from stupidly fast with zero DPS one round to slow as Hell but can hit like a truck the next. Can't say I'm not jealous of you having a copy. Enjoy

@@RaceForFadio thank you, I'm actually a collector and I love playing all these games since I've played most common consoles during my childhood and collected them all and now I'm collecting everything at this point. I tried finding the second archon called archon 2 adept but you can't find it anywhere for a console that's obtainable. I've found one copy for an apple 2 lol. But I did buy the spiritual successor that you mentioned. Thank you for that lol.

@@silverpandaws6230 I used to play Adept on the Amiga 500. If you fancy that just have a good look for a decent emulator. Also, I could never get into Wrath Unleashed. The concept was sound but the 1 vs 1 battles were slow and boring. I would love to see someone do a retro-esqe version of Archon now, though. With light RPG elements for your pieces when winning a match. Fast and tight controls with good online play and matchmaking. Would be amazing if given to the right team.

I just stumbled onto this game. This was one of the first games ever created in 1983 by a company called Electronic Arts. I know of many versions, but until today, I did not know it was also ported to the NES. I historically played both Archon I and II on the 8 bit Atari computer and the Commodore Amiga. Very cool to see, but I don't know if a pad works well for a game like this compared to an actual joystick.

I used to love this game. Light pieces are stronger on light squares. The wizard and the sorcerer have spells. Lots of other things I could tell you but this game came with a multipagemanual explaining everything. It doesn't take long to understand and after awhile you'll find that it's just too easy. That's the biggest problem.

That's because the color of the square that you fight on affects how strong each side is. Lighter squares benefit the light side and darker squares benefit the dark side. All of his fights were on dark squares, so the computer had the advantage. If he had fought on light squares, he would have had the advantage.
Some of the squares are permanently white or black while others cycle through six colors, from pure white to pure black and back again. Choosing when to attack an opposing piece is a big part of the strategy.

This game is the best party game I've ever played and I'm not even kidding. The single player is meh but get together with some friends and throw down and its better than smash.
