I’m 70 now and lost considerable distance with my conventionally lofted clubs a few years ago. So, 2yrs ago I picked up a new set of PXG 0211’s for real cheap, $700CDN delivered to my door. The lighter shafts and stronger lofts have really helped my game.
Loving the content as usual. Could you perhaps do a 70, 80 swing speed with these irons. I hit my 7 iron about 130 yards and watching yourself hit it 60 or 70 yards further with your excellent swing speed doesn’t help me decide which one I should get. Thanks Stephen 🏴
I'm 58, have MS, and tons of arthritis from a 30 year career in middle and long distance running. I bought a set of Mizuno MP 64's at a huge discount to practice with. I knew I needed to hone my ball striking skills. I assumed that I'd go back to my regular irons when the season opened and I played so well with them they stayed in the bag. That was four years ago... I can't see paying a premium price for equipment that can be easily purchased for 2/3 the cost. Keep up the great work Simon!
Any Mizuno irons are a blessing. I bought a used set of T-Zoids for my son a couple of years back. I loved them so much, I kept them and gave him my Callaway XRs!
It's funny I did a fitting and got the Aerojet 4 to gap and I love them. 1/2" long and 2up. I do have the Aerojet driver too and the 3 wood and I've never hit better. Right now I'm hiting 92 to 96 consistently. Still getting used to distances but I'm really happy with them!! Been playing about 6 years
I’m a fairly young player, only 21 years, and just recently went and got fitted for the Callaway AI Smoke HL irons. I started playing when I was 16 with the clubs my dad passed down to me that he bought in 2004 and even then those clubs were a couple years old. I’m an above average height guy at 6’2 with a faster swing speed due to my age and the clubs I had been playing with were stock length and regular flex shafts. I made a deal with myself that once I could break 100 regularly I would get new clubs. After the fitting they fitted me to +1/2 inch on the length, stiff 105g steel shafts, and 1° upright lie angle with a couple tweaks with the tape on my grip. I haven’t received them yet but plan on using these clubs for the next 5-10 years and to me having clubs that are made for my height, speed, and swing make the $1000 price tag valuable.
I'm almost in exactly the same position as you apart from 2° upright, I loved the feel of them and if I can get 5 odd years out of them happy days! I'm only getting 6-pw though so roughly £650 for me
My mate just got fitted for the Ai smoke. X100 115x shafts he plays off 1 and 62 years old. So there not entirely for someone who is just taking it up like you said. He found the dispersion was so minimal and distance was way more than his other titleist irons he had. First 2 games shoots a 70 scratch and 73. So there for anyone really.
I made this mistake. Got fitted into the stealth irons when they came out playing off 26. Had a couple of lessons and had to change them as they just went too far. All my gapping went miles out.
Some players seem reluctant to play cavity back irons ever since hollow bodied irons arrived! Local pro told me that Ping cavity back irons like my G400’s are suitable for single figures players! Some paying for how cool their bag looks?
I used to buy new but since watching your videos many years ago I've only bought second hand and currently game Callaway XR irons and for me they're perfect and another great club is the Taylormade M4 for distance 👌 Keep the great content coming Simon 🏌️
Hear, hear!!! Well said Simon! Me? 2018(?) Mizuno 900 forged, which will last at least another 7 years (by which time, I'll be decrepit!!!). They're lovely off the middle, and OK on the bit I hit them on!!! Iron lofts are a con job!!!! No, "nothing feels like Mizuno"! I'm hooked now!!! Do you know of a self help group!!!??? Great video, ,sound advice!!!!
I bought a set of g425 Black Doy after just 6 months, and breaking 100 with my Burners. I wasn't fitted, and didn't hit them all that well. 90% off the toe After hitting a g430 green dot, and making 80% down the middle, I spent $40 to send them back to Ping to have them bent to green dot. They even changed the dot on the club. I am now hitting my 425's night and day better.
I played with a guy today who bought a new set of Callaway Big Bertha irons. Dude was hitting his 9I 165. He’s like 1-2 lessons from probably being more suited for a set of T150s. Honestly for the money the Wilson D9 is the best value.
I agree. I was fitted 3 years ago for the PXG 0211 DC irons 6-GW, 2 degrees flat and 1/2" short with graphite shafts. This year I took out the 6i and replaced it with a 5 hybrid. Making the game easier.
I bought a used set of Calloway XR’s. 1st off I am an older guy. I had bought just the driver to replace another brands in the bargain set I had. There was a big difference. I noticed the same inconsistency with the rest of the set. So it was time to upgrade and these will probably do it for me. I want to work on my technique not fight equipment.
😅literally just bought a set of cobra Aerojets yesterday for 440.00 5i-Aw. 7 clubs delivering hopefully tomorrow. I’ve had a 13 year break from golf. Purchased some fake 790,s phantoms with KBS stiff shafts from Ali express for 253.00 4i to sw. Been hitting on range only and thought they went too high! Have lost distance over those 13 years and with the addition of Trackman I can now see what distances each club travels. I was averaging 104yds with the wedge and 142yds with a 7iron. So I decided to buy some demo 7 irons off flea bay to compare. Callaway apex with KBS 90 shaft. Callaway paradym x and the Cobra Aerojet. Now I’ve started to compress the ball better this week my launch angles are getting more consistent and the wedge has jumped up to 112 yds average . My fake 790,s averaged 146yards. Callaway Apex 139yards. Callaway paradym 155yards and the cobra 155yards. Cobra would have been longer but I was getting tired and hit a fair few bad ones. Longest was 178yrds with paradym and Aerojet . The problem then lies with stopping distance. My fakes can’t stop within 2-6yrds with wedge and 7 iron but the 2 stronger lofts roll out 10-13 yards. Personally I preferred the Callaway Paradym as has less loft than the Cobra 7 iron but can’t find a new set at the price I paid for the Aerojets. Be interesting to get new distances per club. Another point is with these one length clubs. Bearing in mind I find the 7 iron really easy to hit to 170yrds with 3/4 swing and it goes as far as my 5 iron which is so much harder to hit, I think I would have bought the one length if not for one reason and that’s because the wedge shafts are 7 iron length. Very strange.
Great Video, very thoughtful. If you are just starting out, don't even go out and get fitted before you develop your consistent swing. Buy affordable game-improvement irons, groove your swing, then get a fitting and buy some very nice second-hand clubs and have them shaped for you. If you get fitted and your swing coach changes your stance and swing path, you may have wasted money on the wrong lie, shaft and loft.
Love your videos Simon. I'm about to move on my srixon zx4s, as they go an absolute mile now my swing is getting sorted. Plus you need about 4 wedges to get the gaping right. 😂
As someone who was a machinist for many years seeing the price of clubs these days is just an absolute face palm..... On what planet do these companies live on because slap their brand on it and it turns 200-300$ worth of clubs into 1500$ clubs.
Marketing and consumerism is contributing to landfills. My personal opinion is that the majority of these clubs belong in the dumpster. The price of putters is a sick joke. If you do your homework you will find out where a lot of this money goes. If I cannot enjoy the game, I don’t want anything to do with it. Just look at the attitudes of these new players tells me a boatload.
R&D to an extent but Sponsorships is probably top reason. How else can they afford to build/customize on the spot and give so many clubs and balls away for free each weekend? Buyers subsidize the ability to say they play the same irons their heros do. Same reason an oven mitt (sorry, a sliding glove) costs $100 for little leaguers. They have to look like the pros in order to have fun out there.
For shorter older players that can still middle the ball but could do with help combatting slower swing does a modern lofted 7 iron (previously known as a 6 or even 5 iron) with a traditional 7 iron length shaft help this scenario. Height is not a problem. Hooks with huge offset is not unheard of. Any suggestions Simon ?
I have Taylormade Stealth irons but don’t launch them very high. I’m 68 with slowish swing. Thinking of the TM Stealth HD…..ping a better option? Many thanks 😊😊
I am returning to the game after 20 years away, was seriously considering the stealth range and the Paradym. Then I started looking at some older, 2nd hand irons. Managed to buy a set of cobra speed zone irons for fraction of the price. Now the money I saved I can invest into time at the range and lessons to help improve my game. Don’t think I will buy new irons ever.
@@SASGolfcheers. I told my friend who had just bought brand new Callaway irons, that I had only paid a total of £325 for the 5-PW and a rad speed driver. He was spitting feathers. 😂
I just started a little while back and had no illusions that a $1,200 set of irons would help me be the next Tiger Woods. A set of Ping G30s although older fit the bill and I didn't have to sell a kidney to get them. 😂
I’ve purchased taylormade burner 2 and M6 irons years ago, both new, but a few years after they came out. In California, roger dunno or golf galaxy will have them at close to 50% to get rid of them after they’ve been replaced by the newest sets.
I’m literally in this boat, looking for my first set of clubs, using my dad’s old Ben Sayers. Been looking at the Callaway Warbird full 14 piece set. Just don’t like the bag lol. But I’m completely lost which what to do.
Just got a set of Dark Speeds 6-GW for $500 Australian. They are basically brand new so I’ll be able to sell them for the same or even more in a year or 2 when I get better.
I picked up the tour edge c522 irons for 250£ out of American golf 2 months ago they was such a bargain in pricing I couldn’t pass them up and I’ve gained so much more confidence in myself as a 29 year old returner of the sport when I last touched a club when I was 15 my dad plays and he alone made me not enjoy It because he can’t teach and gets frustrated too fast!
What is your opinion on being fitted at 20 handicap, swing speed has increased so shafts need changing and lie angle needs changing would you steer clear of these irons even if recommended?
Can you voice your opinion on the cobra fly z+ irons. I bought a set 2nd hand. Excellent condition kbs stiff+ shafts 125g shafts. Brand new lamkin crossline grips in standard size with 2 layers of tape and they feel heavy very forgiving and very soft off the face for a forged iron and I hate to say it. They feel a million times better than the p770 Taylormades the caley01t’s and even the callaway apex irons. I paid 120quid for them and I can see them lasting me for years ! Believe there 2015 or 2016 irons
As always great advice, you've really got to have money to burn if you're throwing money at clubs when your swing probably changes every shot! I went the other way and got a stiff set of very cheap Honma TR20V which probably hurt my game but damn if I'm not going to try and grow into them through hard work and lessons 😅
@@AnttiSavolainen-c3d waiting on takamo 301 combo coming. I started of with an old ser of blades my first year seve ballesteros slazenger so going back to that style
What would you recommend for someone who launches it high but fails to get really good distance? Im using the stealths and hit my 7iron 150-160. But it goes so high.
I need help... I recently got back into golf. Used to play a lot (~10 hcp) but due to family and job haven't played much in about 10 years. With the help of a friend I am in a semi-updated Driver, 3 wood and wedges, but i need to look into getting some irons. I'm currently using a set of Taylormade RBZ's. I know right now I am a hi handicap, but I've been practicing multiple times a week and the swing is slowly coming back and handicap is coming down. I want to avoid game improvement irons, I just feel like distance control is too different between a flushed shot and a miss hit. Plus I want something I can grow into as my swing gets better. Does anyone have a recommendation for some irons, even some a couple years old, that are somewhere in that happy medium spot. Something that has OK forgiveness but aren't the typical "game improvement" irons?
I’m a 12 handicap that learned to play with secondhand Callaway rogue pros 5 years ago. Upgraded to the ai smoke irons this year with the hopes of gaining a little more forgiveness. What’s honestly wrong with a little more distance out of each iron if you’re a slightly better than an avg player?
Hi Simon. Would love to hear any advice you might have for someone selling a used set? I recently changed my clubs, so am looking to sell a set like the ones your describing in this video - TM MCGB irons: 5 - PW. Wondering would eBay be the best route, or sell/exchange via a retailer? Any insight you could offer would be great (if you don't mind please)?
None of these clubs makes you hit the ball further loft for loft. Unless the shafts are longer and you gain 1 or 2 mph like the drivers with 46 inch shafts. Strongest 5 iron now? It's got the loft of a 2 iron. Stupid. People are going to buy that set and find that they can't hit the 5 iron or 6 iron and perhaps even a bit dodgy with the 7 iron. It's time for an industry standard. Agree with the Mizuno. It's still a strong loft but not as crazy as some of the others.
Great advice. If I was a beginner/newer golfer looking to buy a new set of GI irons I'd buy the Ping G730's. The Ping G710's have held their value better than any iron I've ever seen, I'd expect the G730's will do the same,
If anyone is looking for cheap light and pretty damn good stix is crazy good. It’s my first year playing and my driver hits 300-310 with room for improving my swing and technique so I’d imagine it goes even farther, the irons are super light and feel pretty good and are just as if not more accurate than any other clubs I’ve tried out. Recently went to try out the p790 and the new MC ones or something like that and my stix irons were better and more consistent. Now for sure I will say the putter didn’t feel as good as a Taylor made hydro something I got as a replacement because my putter went missing 🤦🏻♂️. All in all after testing some irons wanting ti upgrade I realized I don’t need an upgrade I just need lessons to see where I need to improve my game since I’ve just been winging it this entire time. STIX is definitely an extremely good set of clubs for a decent price!
would like to know what complete set of clubs you would recommend for a 64 yo that wants to go back to golfing after 20 years of not playing any more, i am 5 foot 10 tall right handed
Blessed to find a set of Walter Hagen Ultradyne ii (1975) stainless steel w/a twisted shaft...wild man, crazy 😜 Very lite, easy to swing and the control is great. Face has like double amount of grooves, one bounce bite stop 🛑 🙏🏻😎🙏🏻
As an over 60's beginner, it all sounds like a complete minefield and a bit of a lottery. I'm loathed to go for a fitting currently as I really don't play enough to warrant anything new, but then I'm left with just guesswork from You tube videos and advice I suppose?
I think anyone spending this kind of money for clubs is nuts. Buy a used set and enjoy your savings. I but a set of irons for $200 and sellthem later for $100- no big loss or outlay.
I am only 46, but I am a disabled veteran. I lost a lot of yardage. I went back in February for an iron fitting. It kept coming back to the QI irons. Were they the most expensive? No. I was hitting irons like the Callaways and Titleist that were way more expensive. I hit irons that were cheaper than the QI irons. I was hitting the QI irons the best, and I liked them better than others I hit similar. So, for me, it was worth the investment. I have also played gold for years and by no means a new player.

7:09 please explain in more detail how better faster players don’t need long irons?
What about wilson dynapower?
I’m a 12 handicap that learned to play with secondhand Callaway rogue pros 5 years ago. Upgraded to the ai smoke irons this year with the hopes of gaining a little more forgiveness. What’s honestly wrong with a little more distance out of each iron if you’re a slightly better than an avg player?
Buy what you want. 😮
Si, do you not rate Srixon irons?
Would also like to know
I´m new to gold and i have a 3 iron. (which ocasional hit very well) why should I buy a 4 and 5 iron club and some of this sets?
None of these clubs makes you hit the ball further loft for loft. Unless the shafts are longer and you gain 1 or 2 mph like the drivers with 46 inch shafts. Strongest 5 iron now? It's got the loft of a 2 iron. Stupid. People are going to buy that set and find that they can't hit the 5 iron or 6 iron and perhaps even a bit dodgy with the 7 iron.
It's time for an industry standard. Agree with the Mizuno. It's still a strong loft but not as crazy as some of the others.
Ha, bought 2nd Callaway XR's two summers ago and now wanting to upgrade.
Apex irons. Cavity back. Easy to hit. Forged. Length too
Still playing my year 2000 Titleist 681’s. Best irons ever …
P790 are the best clubs I’ve use
I have been through most of the brands but these are the best in my opinion
Great advice. If I was a beginner/newer golfer looking to buy a new set of GI irons I'd buy the Ping G730's. The Ping G710's have held their value better than any iron I've ever seen, I'd expect the G730's will do the same,
Love my AI smoke max fast. Love them
Very informative and useful as always
WHY are so many NEW irons Offset?? Why arent there better shaft options for iron sets??
What about Wilson?
What do you think about the Wilson Dino power?
Did a video on them recently mate. Good irons, D9 great value however. 👍
Good points.
i dont know if im slow but its hard to follow your basicly just saying buy used or last years model?? everyone already kniows thatr
would like to know what complete set of clubs you would recommend for a 64 yo that wants to go back to golfing after 20 years of not playing any more, i am 5 foot 10 tall right handed
Blessed to find a set of Walter Hagen Ultradyne ii (1975) stainless steel w/a twisted shaft...wild man, crazy 😜
Very lite, easy to swing and the control is great.
Face has like double amount of grooves, one bounce bite stop 🛑
🙏🏻😎🙏🏻
Lucky you. I had a set of Haig Ultra clubs many years ago when I played off single figures . Great clubs , but now I could not hit them .
I just paid $799.99 for TaylorMade Stealth Iron Set 4-P KBS Max MT Steel Shaft Stiff Flex +1" LH and now I feel stupid haha
Me too! But hey at least they look good.
Brilliant video. Great helpful information 👍
Love this
Spot on Simon 😊
I am only 46, but I am a disabled veteran. I lost a lot of yardage. I went back in February for an iron fitting. It kept coming back to the QI irons. Were they the most expensive? No. I was hitting irons like the Callaways and Titleist that were way more expensive. I hit irons that were cheaper than the QI irons. I was hitting the QI irons the best, and I liked them better than others I hit similar. So, for me, it was worth the investment. I have also played gold for years and by no means a new player.
Please tell me you don’t normally swing like that
26.5 degrees for a 7 iron 😂😂
That's my 5 iron 🤯
Thanks Simon that explains an awful lot
Sorry, I dont understand a thing you said.
Hola, dumbkopf, he speaks inglish. You learn inglish from a book. 😂
Overthinking, for insomniacs.
Blah blah 😂
