I really wish FNV wasn't rushed and the Legion's deeper goal was revealed.
If Obsidian gets a another chance to make a Fallout, they might? Hopefully.
The Legion's goal was revealed in the game. It just wasn't physically represented outside of their tactical/espionage/sabotage components.
I thought it was obvious IMO, conquer everything and then reform the legion after Pax Romana.
I love how awkward Sawyer's praise for 3 is.
If you watch "The making of Fallout: New Vegas" you can see Sawyer slightly chuckling when saying "a lot of people liked Fallout 3".
Pepper Millers Thanks ofr pointing that out. I've seen it before, but never noticed that detail.
Oh, they are well aware of how Bethesda screwed them and their washing of the RPG elements in Fallout. In “The making of FNV” they mention how FNV story is an extension of the first games, forming a loose trilogy. Also mentioning their intentions to make a game very different to FO3. I think both sides are very aware of their “disagreements” with eachother.
Fallout New Vegas was an incredible game. Fallout 3 was very good in its own right, but I feel like they didn't really capture the spirit of what Fallout is supposed to be. New Vegas really felt like a Fallout game to me.
I love hearing about the design ideas and philosophies for the New Vegas plot and player choice.. It's so interesting...
Hell yeah good to see you're a fan of New Vegas MJR! 8 year old comment, 2012 feels like yesterday
I love how vague he is about Fallout 3. He just looks and sounds all like "Well shit I better make sure I stay positive or Beth's gonna get mad at me"
***** didn't read
Toxic Enchanter typical fo3 fan
Testacles eat dog food
+Weekend Nachos Which is the smart thing to do. If obsidian ever wants the chance to make a true fallout game again they definitely need to be careful about what some of the developers say.
Not that I disagree though, Fallout 3 is garbage.
+Weekend Nachos Yup it was a very politically constructed statement :D If you read between the lines though you can easily spot Sawyer's underlying criticism, e.g. stuff like "Bethesda made a game around Bethesda", highlighting how Bethesda was (and still is) incapable of moving away from their staple comfort zones and trying to actually understand and re-interpret the Fallout IP beyond its surface elements. Meanwhile, companies like Obsidian and inXile are actually daring to vitalize the RPG genre with genuinely ambitious ideas that blend the old-school with the new. While somewhat submissive to the palette of FO3, New Vegas was a tremendous improvement in its storytelling and the recapturing of the nihilistic, yet logical, atmosphere that defined the Black Isle masterpieces. The excellent comparison video by MrBtongue on the two games pretty much nails what sets Bethesda and Obsidian apart: watch?v=wvwlt4FqmS0
Nice, was looking forward to this part featuring the newer Fallout games. This has been a very entertaining series of interviews. Kind of sad to see it end, but looking forward to the next interviewee, Matt!
Clint! :D
Clint my dude! You should do a video on new vegas some day!
fnv review when
Amazing interview. Josh Sawyer is one of my favorite video games developers.
I honestly have always loved both 3 and FNV for what they have to offer. I can't ever imagine not playing one or the other. But then again that's just like my opinion....man.
Hope to see him revisit the Fallout series in the future.
Fallout New Vegas is one of the best games I've ever played.
Never before have I really hated a non existing political movement so much as I did the Legion in New Vegas. I also love the way that the NCR exploits the evil of Legion to justify there own somewhat dubious dealings, much like modern politics in real life.
The only thing I really don't like about New Vegas is the DLC. I feel that DLC should have something to do with the core of the original game, not to be something completely unrelated that just uses the same engine. I can understand the difficulty in making plot related DLC because it is usually released after the original game has already been played. Deus Ex Human Revolution did a great job of integrating the Missing Link DLC into the original story. It was like another mission in the game that you had not seen before, but still made perfect sense.
Anyway Matt, thanks for the great shows ! It's wonderful to get some sort of inside into great games and the people who make them.
Ronald James The DLC was amazing tho
Ronald James Mostly all of the DLCs have connections to the main game. Father Eljiah, Dean Domino, Your brain etc.
Extremely late reply, but the DLCs practically finished the story of the Courier, linked it all together with the character of Ulysses as well.
JSawyer should make that alternate history game.
yeah, it sounds pretty fucking cool.
His idea for a game is so fucking cool. Maybe someday Pentiment looks like it'll be solid.
I really enjoyed this interview Matt, thanks!
I'd heard of this show but never actually saw it. This is really really good stuff. The fact that these game developers are willing to come out and speak openly about these games is amazing. I subscribed. And I actually have that Kirk vs Picard t-shirt lol.
OMG, that music during the ale part was amazing. Icewind Dale 1 or 2 if I'm not mistaken. Great interview. Being a huge Obsidian fan, it was good to see Josh in these episodes. Subscribed to a monthly donation by the way. Keep up the good work. :)
Matt, i really like your interviews with developers. You really get an insight into what the developers were trying to achieve, and some of the games short commings.
MAKE MOOOOOOOODS ! ! !
MOD IT TILL IT CRASH ! ! !
23:21 best part
wow, you picked my question on the mod! thx Matt! :D
28:10 love how Icewind Dale menu theme starts playing
I love these videos. It's like the only informative videogame related journalism left and luckily, you're covering its heritage more than its present And unlike most, not just through the rose-tinted sunglasses of awesome +1. Which is something that not even an AC of -3 can fight off. a D2 that only rolls 99 and 100 is really tough shit. Good job so far!
Great vid, Matt. Love New Vegas. I'm actually playing it at the moment. I've just got on to the Strip.
I appreciate Bethesda's work, tho. Compared to other franchises that were destroyed by many companies, they didn't go that bad. They have my thanks for not making turning fallout into another thing. But still, i prefer the Classic Fallouts more.
Not anymore jajajajaja
Nice interview
That Antebellum South idea sounds AMAZING.
That's my hometown!
Fallout New Vegas is in my books probably the best ROLE playing game of this "generation" (I think the second best in terms of actual role playing was Skyrim and Fallout 3 comes as a third best, followed by Mass Effect 1 and Dragon Age Origins). I really like how Obsidian allowed you to be a friend with even the Nightkin Mutants, if you just chose the right way to play. In NV they allowed you to play exactly the role you wanted. Skyrim is also good doing this.
5:29 wait what
The Josh Sawyer New Vegas mod to make the game more fleshed out and survivally seems to be the inspiration for Fallout 4's Survival mode. A lot of the same elements.
I'm fairly certain the inspiration would've been Fallout New Vegas Hardcore mod.
I'd love to see Josh Sawyer's antebellum rpg!
New Vegas was amazing. Great companions, a lot of love for the original games, and some incredibly well realized quests/world design. Under appreciated classic.
I bought Alpha Protocol about a week or so after release. I loved it. I played through it 4 times in something less than 2 weeks. PC version with the wired 360 controller. IMO very unlucky game and got way too much flak than it deserved. It was probably my favourite game of the year. I hope there is a sequel one day.
Dungeon Siege III (PS3) I liked it, but there were a couple of things that hurt the game for me, not enough freedom in character selection and no camera I like.
The name of his mod is jsawyer and for me it's an essential mod. Google it to see the many things it changes. Small things like not getting bad karma if you steal from "bad" people and big things like reducing the worth of the gold you can find in Dead Money. It has tons of changes.
Oh. just wanted to point out that i SPOTTED THE END TUNE. Theme of Icewind Dale 2. Good taste!
No problem. Make sure that you use BOSS, because the load order is very important.
I think Mass effect started as an action-rpg, but turned in to an action game with rpg elements as it went along, if you see what I mean.
Talk about a glow up. He went from slavic nerd to fantasy bard over the years
I'm sad that Alpha Protocol was as poorly received as it was. Sure, it was clunky as hell, but in pure roleplaying terms I found it to be even better than the Mass Effect series that it was mirroring. I love how you are forced to make game changing decisions on the fly without being able to think them through. If only the shooting and stealth mechanics were cleaned up a bit and less tied to arbitrary stats.
I wish he would make some cool alt history games
I love Mass Effect, but the role playing in that series is incredibly limited. Alpha Protocol offers much more varied, interesting, and ultimately more meaningful choices. More importantly, the roleplaying in Alpha Protocol isn't limited to the dialogue sections as it is in Mass Effect. Whether you use lethal force or not, as well as whether you sneak your way through a mission or not also impact the way the game plays out.
i recognize the Beer Theme from an old Neverwinter Nights trailer. where'd you find the .mp3?
My main problem with FO3 was the ending. I almost felt cheated.
God I love the mods in Fallout New Vegas
I am the only one that thinks the game he describes sounds fucking awesome? I'd buy that straight away.
Loved Dungeon Siege III. Played it with kb+mouse in co-op and loved it. Which may be because i didn't like previous Dungeon Siege games - i mean, I heard a lot of people criticizing it for just being "not Dungeon Siege". It was more bland in terms of the story and the loot collection for a singleplayer game, i guess, but even with a very strange choice for the camera in coop loved it. Also it looked fantastic and combat was very fun.
Awesome interview. Im sure your vids havent been showing up in my Subscription section, havent seen one in ages, yet here they are...lots of vids.
One day im gonna make a cup of tea and not offer one to YT, cause thats how i roll.
It does suck that there is not many options with the legion. On a vanilla (No mods) play through of the Legion side I found myself not really doing as many side quests as the NCR side, thus it is harder to have a high level god save. I'm level 40 on my Legion save but only because of mods and DLC. If you want a high level god save do the NCR side, they have plenty more faction related side quests.
I think Dungeon Siege III is a painfully underrated game. It has a good balance in difficulty giving it a stimulating playing satisfaction. I just think it lacks a main character variable. I liked the race selection and divercity from its older succesors.
And just in a fit of nerd levity: Kirk may have 10 reasons to be better than Picard but Picard has like 50 reasons to be better than Kirk. =p
Yes it is. I'm using Project Nevada, FOOK and jsawyer and these mods work together fine. They make the game very hard though. Jsawyer hides the weapons and the armor you get from the Courier's Stash (so when you start the game you have no weapons or armor). It also reduces the amount of XP you get, so it will take longer to level up. The enemies are stronger and take longer to die. If you use it next to mods like Monster Wars and New Vegas Bounties (like I do), those mods will be even harder.
Oh yeah and the dialogue part was completely gone. You could just go through the entire speech tree without any repercussions. In Fallout if you said something wrong - discussion over and maybe they would attack you.
I am playing Dungeon Siege III at the moment on the PS3 (and have not played the previous ones), so taking it in isolation it is not too bad, although I will say the items/loot seem fairly pointless. I have been sticking with it though, so it can't be that bad and I have played Diablo III recently.
Oh, and New Vegas is one of the most unstable games I have ever played in my life. Crashed endlessly.
Ain't that the truth... Man, what a game. I know some Bethesda fans will see this as blasphemy, but I thought it was far more memorable than any of the Elder Scrolls games. I loved it.
You left the gametrailers watermark in your DS3 footage, you might want to remove that...
Do you want some cider for the drinking horn ?
I also think that this idea that there are "a lot of game companies" .. truthfully the $1 iPad game doesn't pay the bills...
A lot of people (Especially XBOXERS & PS folks) are screaming and drooling for a remastered version, like with SKYRIM on the X-1. It also seemed to me there is a lot of left over map, and some places where it seems like something should BE. The Cazador nest near El Dorado for example - that may have been put there for more content to be written for it. Possibly the jump-off point for yet another DLC... Who knows? But there is definitely a lot of room for added content THE MOST STRIKING THING about FNV is that there is such a huge appeal about the whole game just as it is. I can sum that up by saying that: "Some games just never get old" and any game, really, in the FALLOUT continuum is like that
also keep in mind there would be no new vegas if it wasn't for fallout 3
picard > kirk
suddenly i have a urge to make mods
Make mods... Make moooods... Make mooooooodss....
Hypnotized O_O...
You mean my red shirt of extra death + 3?
haha true!...i was like wtf is that?
Oh, sorry, I forgot, that Witcher 2 is also on my "best ROLE playing games of this gen". :) How could I forgot?! :)
You just inspired me to reinstall it and give it another shot. Although some of the mechanics were poorly executed, it was a wonderfully unique game. It's a shame it did so poorly. :-(
Nailed it about Mr. House, blowing up the BOS is a no-no for me.
MAKE MODS... I dunno, I made mods for Doom, not a minute spent working in that industry. Though I think I did have a chance when I talked to John Carmack ; but I'd rather talk to him now that I have nuts and bolts.
23:22
I had already destroyed the BoS by the time House had asked.
:D
it was better than ME1 and ME2 (can't speak about ME3) much more fun and interesting.
I like the interviews, but Kirk is not better than Picard.
They're making that game, it's called Wasteland 2.
Bethesda are way better world builders than Obsidian, but Bethesda's writer's just seem to miss the mark on RPGs. If only there could be a compromise - a game designed by Bethesda and the story and character's written by Obsidian. I know it'll never happen, but it's nice to dream.
I'm sorry Matt, but Picard is better than Kirk
Unfortunately, blowing up Megaton was pretty much the only choice in the game that had an impact like that. So that's why I say NV has better choices, because they do kind of add more to the game as they're consistent. It isn't like there's just one situation that's good and everything is shit.
I need better elaboration skills.
I now have a new mantra.
Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods Make Mods
Why do you call Avellone and Urquhart rotten to the core bastards? What did they do?
Nah, it's clear that Picard is much better than Kirk.
I have said.
You see i can't agree with you FNV is consider by me to be THE best Fallout sense F1 F2, it had a soul of the first 2. F3 for instance was bland and FULL of LORE holes if you will....Fnv the story, lore, chr. DLC they were all TOP notch! your choices had real meaning as they were morally gray, your perks had actual impact on very mature dialog ,tho TBH it becomes easy later on but its norm when you get high lvl chr.(in ANY rpg game). i can say this as i have finished it few days ago.My opinion.
I love Fo3 Sense it was pretty much my first Fallout game and sense it's in the urban area. I love Fallout NV because of the game mechanics, aiming down sight, more guns, mods and such. plus more enemies than just raiders and super mutants.
I am curious do you pay these people for their time? or do they just love the chance to speak?
Top 10 reason Kirk is Better than Picard....have you had that shirt since the late 80s? Hehe! And are you sure that drinking from an animal horn doesn't affect the taste...I hope you wash it! Did you by chance have some cereal in it earlier before drinking the ale?
ha. Good questions.
+The Batman hello batman
Small World!
Why was it so buggy? I've never ever played a game as broken as F:NV.
+Kousaburo Rushed development, released before it should have been, etc.
18 months*
Fallout NV had much more choices, but I have to say there was nothing there with as much impact as blowing up Megaton.
new vegas was great but i think fallout 3 gets an unfair wrap by new vegas fanboys. exactly like josh sawyer said.. they weren't trying to copy fallout 1/2.. and they did a great job of making a new game imo. fallout new vegas does a better job of capturing 1/2.. but 3 is still very good in its own right.
i think 3 and new vegas are almost equally as good in their own ways.. but i'll give the nod to new vegas because of the iron sights built in :p
being as stable as any comparable game ever is did nothing to stop dungeon siege 3 getting absolutely trashed for being yet another buggy obsidian pile
i kinda hate bethesda now i just wish they took there time and didnt use the crappy engine that was for f3 like i dont care if it took 10 years or 15 years just as long as it was a good game
Fallout: New Vegas was indeed much better than Fallout 3. =)
Guys I prefer New Vegas over 3, but don't act like the game was the worst thing ever. It had many good things despite it's terrible writing.
I love these guys, but DSIII was really bad. It was awful for the PC, bad controls, awful save system, atrocious automap. Moreover, it felt NOTHING like the previous 2 games, they destroyed the simple yet nicely done and balanced character system, and pretty much everything else. Consolified in all the worst possible ways. I was interested to see where the story went but i couldn't put up with the game.
No... Fallout 3 just isn't. Atmospherically, it's better, but the story is mediocre and doesn't allow for as many choices as NV's does. It's buggier, has inconsistent quality regarding voice acting with seemingly 6 voice actors, less interesting quests, a bunch of annoying, unlikable characters (with the exception of James, John Henry Eden, and pretty much Fawkes), etc. Oh, and it fucked up the lore, big-time to where NV had to go behind it and fix it for them. F3 is just an inferior game.
Fin.
Aedan Clarke I agree with the gist of what you’re saying but I still feel like F3 gets a raw deal. I enjoyed it immensely and it is the reason I even played NV. I really couldn’t dig Fallout 4 though.
Dungeon Siege III was very weak.
Wow this game truly looks like ASS on consoles.
If you think New Vegas is bad, then Fallout 3 simply must be a horrendous game. Because, objectively, New Vegas is simply a better game mechanically than Fallout 3. And the thing is, Fallout 3 is Bethesda's best game since Daggerfall.
Obsidian's problem is that they're consistently fucked by publishers. But you don't do your research or are too stupid to understand the impact publisher's can have on a game, so whatever.
The romanninjanazis were a really good idea in New Vegas. Na.
I finished and liked Fallout 3, but kept replaying and quitting New Vegas shortly after getting to Vegas. The Vegas "city" felt small and confined. The side quests were boring to me. I got bored of repeatedly being attacked by the Caesar's Legion and hauling tons of their heavy stuff to sell. I thought the Legion seemed kind of hokey. I didn't feel very invaded by them. The NCR was always sitting on their butts doing nothing. I never bothered with the addition of hollow point and armour piercing bullets. There is too much stuff lying around to worry about ammo. I actually found Fallout 3 to be more intimidating because the buildings were bigger and felt like they were going to collapse on you at any moment. It was a bit of a frustrating hedge maze at times, but I get that they were trying to lead you to areas in a certain order. New Vegas was trying to lead you in a U shaped trail, but I didn't want to follow it. In general I thought the characters in these games felt bland compared to the original games, which actually did more with less. I liked Liberty Prime, however. Another reason I liked Fallout 3 better was that I preferred the retro aspect to the cowboy crap! Finally, both games DON'T NEED ORCS! Mutants are not Orcs! Every time I see them my sense of believability goes out the window.
Lorenzo SD Uhh, in my opinion, I think New Vegas is better.
But the Super Mutants in NV were not orcs, they were actual characters like in 1 and 2.
And the Metros in 3 were even more awful compared to the New Vegas walls.
I seriously can't see how you found the cast in NV bland, despite the fact that 3 is full of bland and uninteresting characters.
New Vegas had no soul. The story was stretched way too thin. Get to A get B get back to C. Most of the NPC's were boring cardboard types. But the Fallout universe is hard to fuck up completely so I played it to the end :)
"No soul" lol! Ok....get lost you idiot
