Matt Chat 256: Feargus Urquhart on the Fall of Black Isle

  • Feargus returns in part 3 of my 4 part interview. In this segment, we talk about the collapse of Black Isle in the wake of some questionable decisions on the part of Fargo and other execs--Interplay Sports, Engage, losing the D&D license, and some bad bets on consoles (Sega Saturn, anyone?). Despite the passage of time, Feargus is still quite emotional, and you can't help but wonder what might have happened if the leadership had listened to him.
Games covered include Planescape: Torment, Fallout 3, Baldur's Gate III, and Icewind Dale.

Black Isle didn't fall or collapse...They just bowed and gracefully saluted and flew away to the RPG heavens.

Why the hell isn't this channel more popular? I just don't get it.

I don't know. If you find out, please let me know. :)
However, if it involves a pair of scissors or a razor I'm not doing it!

OBSIDIAN WANTED TO DO A MIGHT AND MAGIC GAME?! AND THEY DIDN'T?! WHY? DEAR GOD WHY NOT?! That would be so amazing. The phenomenal atmosphere and feeling of the Might and Magic games (mostly 6 & 7 and Heroes 3) with the unrivaled writting of the Obsidian. Why didn't this happen?!

God, I wished I didn't knew that. Now I keep thinking at it.

Tell me about it! Fuck the Pirates of the Caribbean Armada of the Dead. Fuck Star Wars 1313. Fuck Silent Hills. An Obsidian Might & Magic is THE best game that never happened. I find it so depressing that we never got to see that game!

I remember being baffled back at the turn of the century when developers UNIFORMLY made the transition to 3D. I didn't understand why. I still don't. Publisher pressure? The worst gaming news I ever read in my life was the announcement in an issue of PC Gamer that Icewind Dale 2 would be the last IE game. Why? The CRPG genre effectively died then and there.

    Thank for another great show.
And thank you for making me feel ancient with your new feature! I played Elite on the BBC Model B, here in the UK, off of a behemoth 5 1/4 inch floppy disk drive. I'm looking forward to Elite Dangerous. Hopefully it will cater for old, arthritic hands.

I always keep coming back to this. The thing is, back then this wasn't merely Interplay/BIS around that time.
Origin. Looking Glass. Sir-Tech. SSI. New World Computing. Attic. Westwood. Troika later on. Even Bethesda a while ago had publicly admitted that Morrowind had saved the company. Crazy times!
And still being felt in the genre, if you ask me. The few remaining AAA devs are targeting ever bigger audiences, as such moving further and further away from the core Western RPG values back then. And then there's the Kickstarter/indie scene that really took off in around 2012-2014.
Baldur's Gate 3 could build a few bridges here. But the genre, to me, is pretty much split in two since.

I loved the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance games, I wish they would reboot those or re-release them on PC.
Those games still hold up well gameplay wise, I play them from time to time on my original Xbox.

Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3 and New Vegas are all based on an engine developed by Obsidian/Black Isle employees? WELL THAT EXPLAIN WHY IT'S SO BLOODY SHITE!!!!! :))
