We spend many hours a day bombarded by non ionizing radiation from light bulbs. That's higher energy than radio waves.
how dare you use logical thinking skills
This is exactly what i was thinking.....
There is an even worse thing... UV radiation from THE SUN.
Sun is a deadly laser
Exactly
sir, don't make it obvious people will start to panick. lol
I work in the tech department at Target. It’s mostly old people who hear these rumors and are deeply concerned about brain, cancer or brain tumors from AirPods. One of them lectured me for a good minute or two. I’m trying to be nice and not condescending and I understand their fears but sometimes misinformation gets out of control a little bit.
So true! When I got diagnosed with a brain tumor all I heard was my constant use of AirPods gave me the tumor 😂
It's mainly people are being gullible with the things. Although now you do have a video to prove your point.
When I worked as a bagger at a supermarket, an older lady came through my line buying a ton of organic produce, and complaining that it was so expensive. "It is," I agreed, "the conventional produce is much cheaper, if you'd like me to go exchange those for you?" "No no," she said. She insisted she *couldn't* buy conventional, because "they have GMOs and I'm allergic to GMOs."
Now, I had just graduated from uni at that point (hadn't gotten my first full-time job yet), and though my degree is in computer science, I'd switched to that from studying biomedical engineering with a focus on researching gene therapies for cancers. So I know a little bit more than non-sciency people about GMOs, and knew being "allergic to GMOs" isn't really a thing, because GMOs aren't really one thing. So I asked politely, "Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Which GMOs are you allergic to?" Her response, as you can imagine, was, "All of them! I get very sick if I eat any GMOs!"
I didn't continue the conversation, because I decided there was no way she'd listen anyway, but... it made me sad. Someone, somewhere had manipulated this poor old lady into spending money she didn't have -- money that likely went straight into the pockets of the organic producers who perpetuate such myths -- by making her afraid that any and all fruits and vegetables that aren't made by them will make her ill. They scared an old woman out of her money with modern-day Frankenstein stories. That should be illegal.
So I know the feeling of having customers think they know what they're talking about, but really don't, trying to justify their purchasing habits to themselves and to you.
Stop making ageist assumptions. I'm what you'd probably call old-as are many of my friends-and we don't harbor these fears at all.
@@laurahubbard6906Nobody said it applied all old people, stop looking for reasons to be offended
As an Electronics Engineer with background on RF and a human with common sense I can say that high volume on headphones and lifestyle changes that come usually with cellphone addiction will have a much bigger impact on your health.
Another embedded systems engineer here. If you can believe that bluetooth power level devices can give you cancer, then you probably believe that microwaving your food makes it radioactive ☢️
Fr💯
Not only that, but I'm sure more lives get saved by having a cell phone than people die from having a cell phone.
It's just risk vs reward.
Yeah, I'm an electrician and I'm in high RF areas regularly so you'd think if this were close to true sparkys would have higher cancer rates. And people working in television and radio. Thinking this through as I write, people living next to a cell tower or radio station should have clusters of cancer diagnosis.
This was my first thought - association. Maybe people who use phones more are also more likely to have a sedentary life, or eat an entire bag of Cheetos each night.
Please, please do a video about laundry and dishwasher detergents! I've heard so many claims that make it sound like their impact on hormones could be serious due to the fact these are used so often in our daily lives! Would love to know the truth! Thank you for doing this series, it's been awesome 😊
100% it will you’re wearing it on your skin and washing your body. Endocrine disruption is legit concern
I agree I would love to see a video about this as well
Esp indirect effect of dishwasher detergent on our gut health..
Also PFAS in swim suits and period panty products
This would be very interesting to look into
an episode on endocrine disrupters as a whole would be very useful to me
GASP!!! A doctor who stuck to the research without going all the way over to one side or the other and denigrating the other side just clearing stating the pros and cons of each side? Well color me impressed. Well done.

this really only takes at most an hour of research for most doctors who know where to look for the evidence they want.
i doubt dr mike read thru entire papers and probably just scanned the abstracts of some of the more highly regarded papers, then maybe looked at the "findings" section if it wasn't clear enough.

If I heeded every article that presented a new study that something is bad for you I would die from either starvation, dehydration, or boredom. 😂
I'm sure there's a paper floating around somewhere that sets out how anything can be considered harmful by one metric or another! Too much of anything is a bad thing, it's all about moderation. But unfortunately moderation does not engaging headlines make 😂
Or sobriety. But that's just me. Same with the other three.

Too much water can kill you. And we're not talking about drinking a bathtub, but just an amount you could easily have too much of on a hot day with too much physical activity.
A new study shows: that continued belief in new studies can cause aids... It's true , a doctor on TH-cam said so (this is not a dig at Mike)
If bluetooth in general is potentially dangerous, I'll take it. My medical devices use it and to have better control of my diabetes and not have burn out, it's worth it as the amount of time I have to focus on my bloodsugar and giving insulin is waaaaaaaay less time consuming after nearly 30 years of dealing with it.
You can reverse your T2D with Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition. Please look into it!
The real danger of Bluetooth headphones or any headphones whatsoever is the risk of losing your hearing. We are the generation with highest risk of having lost hearing at a young age. The only reason are the heavily use of headphones with high volume.
If you want to know more about it, Vox has a very well explained video.
People don’t care
we've known about this for years. i, and many of my friends in high school, were taken to the doctor for potential hearing loss due to how much we used headphones back then (06-10). its just that on a mass scale, no one cares. we have beats to bump ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
As a graduate researcher in Life Sciences, I love how you go in depth with the studies performed and discuss much of the nuance. When I hear these kinds of claims it's easy for me to want to just say "you're wrong". But these videos help me to understand more fully the claims, why they exist, and the evidence for and against and it also helps me to be better equipped to have an informed discussion with others. I look forward to watching more of these!
I remember when I was 13 and cellphones were starting to become more common. My dad forbid me from keeping my cellphone in my front pockets because he “heard somewhere” that it can cause infertility. I haven’t tried conceiving but in the 15 years since then, I haven’t heard any research that proves that. As a nurse, I always look to solid research before touting any medical beliefs
That's one of the reasons WHY I put my phone in my front pocket!
Well, that and because I don't want to sit on my phone and have to buy a new one.
-
Actually I haven't put things in my back pockets since my military training.
Additionally, unless you are wearing pants with buttoning back pockets, your back pockets are low-hanging fruit for pickpockets.
I remember that when smartphones started coming out! I remember my best friend saying she was resting with her phone on her chest and started worrying what it was doing to her 😂 she knew it was a bit silly at the time & we laughed about it but can't deny the fears about the flashy new tech got to us 😅
(Kicker is - I've seen those phones now described as "dumb" phones! So maybe they wouldn't worry people now compared to the new ones 😂 What a time we've lived in)
I used to have that worry.
But more in the sense of "if a phone gets worn/damaged internally, what would it take for the radiation it creates to shift to a dangerous part of the spectrum?"
Especially when phones were still new, and the manufacturing processes weren't so well established yet.
(and although I'm not a product engineer, it seems very challenging to make something designed to make radio waves transition to shorter wavelengths than ultraviolet - breaking off some antenna part inside won't suddenly change the frequency)

I bought a 2002 Prius in 2020, and one day I started it up while my grandpa was on a phone call nearby. The moment I turned the key, the engine spooled up and the call dropped simultaneously.
Whenever I use bluetooth headsets or AirPods nonstop for a while I always get massive headaches and have to take a few weeks break. I'm back to using wired again and it feels better imo, unless for certain exercise or pooping then I crack and throw in the bluetooth again.
I get pain in my ear and head shortly after wearing ear buds.

It's still a crazy thing to research. We are bombarded with non ionizing radio waves literally every day. The intriguing thing about radio waves is that they can not touch our cells at all. They are either too big or do not have the crazy energy ultraviolet, xrays, and gamma rays contain to damage our cells. Some radiowaves are the size of a skyscraper.
Sometimes, the most harmful thing that gets into our skull is misinformation.
Sure, a high-velocity piece of rebar is bad for the skull it hits, but misinformation can be contagious.
Yah, there's at most mild heating at the site of impact but they don't go farther in than maybe an inch. If surface heating was enough to secondarily cause brain cancers, we'd all have already died from baseboard heaters or furnaces. You *can* get burns from malfunctioning radio towers (if you're a worker standing right next to it) or from idiots that pull out the magnetron from a microwave and use it unshielded. But that's levels several orders of magnitude higher than anything normal.
Microwaves are radio waves and they heat things up. The frequencies of phones and Bluetooth will heat cells up. It’s also about proximity. The local intensity of Bluetooth in your ear canal is very different to ambient radio .waves.
Back in my community health classes when I was finishing my bachelors degree someone had mentioned this in the preventative medicine class. The Doctor Who teaches the class who was an MD who specifically researches health trends said that there are so many other carcinogens that are much more dangerous that we’re exposed to on a daily basis, and that for the average person, the connection between severity and potential for actual cause of cancer is so low that there are other things that should be focused on like stopping smoking, decreasing pollution levels in the air, dealing with micro plastics and chemicals that are in hygiene and personal care products as well as chemicals in cosmetics. In addition, there is the problem related to antibiotics in the food we eat. There’s a lot to unpack here, but basically there’s other things we should be worrying about.
Which is hilarious bc farmers don’t sell antibiotic filled meat and animal products: they literally get in trouble for detectable levels. A test that reveals antibiotics in a truck of milk the ENTIRE TRUCK goes down the drain
@@spazzyshortgirl23 Yeah, but it still doesn't change the fact that people believe it exists. Even if something is wrong, if the public believes it is true, it is public health's job to combat that misinformation and ensure people know the facts.
Yeah, but we could decrease risk of ALL of them. I'll stick to wired earphones, turning off WiFi at night, using 4G, minimizing use of plastics, natural shampoo and body wash, Whole Food Plant Based Nutrition, and so on.
Many people experience sickness being around large levels of EMF. I feel sick if I put my phone to my ear for more than a couple seconds, I’m gonna listen to my body over studies.

There was a youtuber that did pull up the worldwide reported cancer rates since 1990 or so and it clearly showed that all cancer types are on a rise. However, the increase rates have been almost perfectly proportional to the population growth rates. More people = more cancers.
Then, he pulled data of worldwide cellphone use which is a graph that skyrocketed, comparing it to the cancer growth rate brought no matching rates. Also, cellphone usage wouldn’t promote certain types, but, if having an effect if at all, promote growth of other cancer types. No link visible here either because no type of cancer had a higher growth rate than others respectively.
The order and the way that the information was presented was done so well, not giving the viewer enough time to jump to conclusions before the actually information was given was done very well.
Read the difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation. That grandpa that we know, who smoke all his life and lived besides the radio died at 102; really doubt the radiation of the radio was the cause. The main danger is for people who hear at a way too high of a volume, damaging the tympanic membrane. Maybe something relating with cerumen but that's more for an ENT doc to explain more.
I was just diagnosed with breast cancer, could you do a video on invasive ductal carcinoma? This type of breast cancer is on the rise and it's also the type that affects men as well as women.
Dr. I know something is wrong with me I'm very sick. But recent doctor, an Oncologist, examination and CRT showed no sign of cancer. Name of doctor that have EMF patients in DC, Maryland, VA, or any state locations I may contact please advise ASAP. Thanks!!
As part of a course I was leading a seminar on, last year I read a recent paper on effect of prolonged EMF from cell phones and headsets being used to make phone calls on stress and cardiac health using a very large British sample: Cell phone use was quantified based on ~2010 levels of use, not present day, to look at the downstream effects of high exposure. And it found headset use to make phone calls 15 years ago (not likely to be Bluetooth) was associated with present day worse health. Specifically usage to make phone calls over 30 hours a week, in people with lower SES. The main flaw (imo) in this study was that it didn't take into account why the cellphone use was so high, and it is more likely that what the study found was that having a JOB where you have to be on the phone all day (e.g. call center, operator, dispatch) is stressful.
It is really hard to do this kind of population level study and I'm glad they could put the data out for others to see.
people really forget that visible light is radiation
Probably the same people who say the earth is flat and 5G causes cancer 💀
I'm pushing 70, so I've been around for a good while. Because of health issues I've had more xrays, ct scans and mri than I can count + mammography and dexa scans. At this stage I should glow in the dark. That said I still use plug in headphones for no other reason than that I haven't found a pair of Bluetooth ones that I find comfortable. 🤷♀️
The bottom line is that both cell phones and bluetooth headphones are in mass use in years and decades. If there was a cancer risk it would be noticeable by now. The rates of brain cancer would be surging as compare to the rates say 30 years ago. Any electromagnetic wave can be described as radiation. Phones usually emit milliwatts (can go to several watts) of RF power at around 850MHz to 5GHz (for 5G). Those frequencies are orders of magnitude lower than those of sunlight. Yet, conspiracy theorists aren't afraid exposing themselves to a high energy radiation with typical intensity of 1KW/m2 when they go to the beach, but at the same time are terrified of a cell phone or bluetooth headphones that have much lower energy, and they transmit it with much lower intensity.
7:52 Now I wonder what SAR my hearing aids have.
I recently got a BT connected HA. I'm super sensitive and have some neck/head pain - cervicogenic headaches. The HA connected to BT was making my headaches worse. We have been surrounded by radio waves since the 20s. Visible light has many times more energy than radio waves. A TV remote emits higher frequency radiation than a cell phone. Radio wavelength is measured in kilometers. Way too long to do anything to a tiny human.
Pretty sure the Soviet over the horizon radar (i forget the name) was so strong that it interfered with radios all over the world (wookpecker frequency??). Yet we’re all still alive.
The wavelengths discussed here are Bluetooth, which straddle the line between microwaves and radio. Obviously something intended to send a wireless signal inside a room's distance is not going to have a wavelength of a kilometer. But nonetheless the odds of it having any kind of significant influence when it's way less powerful than a light bulb are practically nil.
@@ULTRAOutdoorsmana lightbulb ina tiny volume inside your ear would be dangerous. Don’t forget local intensity and location. I doubt it’s a worth a worry but the video made it clear…there is a slight concern that it’s possible

This dispels many misconceptions about Bluetooth headphones. As with many things, moderation is key. Awareness about the potential risks and taking preemptive actions should be done.
I been watching you for five years and learned so much thank you dr mike 😊
The real shame is so many companies are removing headphone jacks left and right so most people have a extra step of buying a dongle if they want to use wired headphones. Even a small barrier like this turns countless people to the ewaste battery powered wireless earphones.
E-waste wireless earphones? As opposed to e-waste wired earphones?
I know it's popular to complain about planned obsolescence, but the two most recent wireless head/earphones I purchased have lasted longer than any wired set I ever owned. I remember going through many pairs of wired sets, where especially the wire itself was prone to breaking.
Bluetooth headphones caused headaches ,those over the neck ones caused for me . Then I switched to Sony xm4 1000 in ear one , regular gym usage that’s it . One thing to add would be that if you look at the light (RF) spectrum, from low energy to high energy, it goes:
- non-ionizing: radio waves, mirowaves, infrared, visible, UV
- ionizing: UV, X-Rays, Gamma-Rays
Hence, radiowaves and microwaves have lower energy than visible light! Yet, somehow, no one is afraid to turn on a lightbulb at night and i have seen no studies checking the effect of visible light on cancers.
While they cannot bump electrons from atoms at these wavelengths (wavelength (m) or frequency (Hz) ~ energy; different from emission power (W) ), the thing that they can do is heat tissue (think microwaves at 1000W or ~10000x the power of a cell phone; or think a magnifying glass concentrating visible light to heat something and burn it). This is why we have VERY conservative power limits with built in safety margins (cellphones max is about 0.3W; cell towers max ~20W; microwave heats at about 1000W for 1-2mins in a cavity designed to keep everything bouncing around so as to use the waves multiple times until they dissipate; think cats' eyes).
The last thing is that we typically have the emission power (power emitted at the source) and also have a formula to calculate the power at a certain point and distance away (reception power), with the emission power being the maximum, and decreasing with distance and directivity. This makes it so it wouldn't matter if the source is right next to your ear (airpods) or in your pocket (cellphones). 1W of received power next to your ear is 1W of received power no matter if the power was greater when it left the cell phone in your pocket, the cell tower down the street or your neighbour's the wifi router.
This is the reply I wanted to write, but couldn't figure out the wording. Thank you! So many people forget how the EMF spectrum actually works and just shout bullshit into the ether.
So what you’re saying is that MKBHD can spontaneously combust at any moment now. 😂
I used to wear a Bluetooth head set almost daily for about a year and a half. I started to get what I thought were really bad migraines. I started seeing a neurologist, lots of tests. Then he told me to stop wearing the headset for a while and see if it helped. After three weeks with no headset the headaches stopped. It's been a year and I haven't had a really bad headache since.
They were a headset that sat on the back of my neck with wires that went up to my ears or used a speaker, very light weight. I won't ever use a wireless/Bluetooth headset or ear buds again.
I believe some people are just more sensitive to things like that than others.
I have been told about this stuff many times. People wanting to shut their WiFi off whenever possible etc. But I’m glad you mentioned the thought I had initially; even if I shut my WiFi off or don’t use Bluetooth, there are so many satellites and cell towers etc bombarding us constantly anyway. And if the cellular download speed from the tower is near the download speed of your WiFi router, you’re getting hit with as much emf’s. Good luck asking them to turn that tower off as well. Of course if we truly discovered this was very unhealthy, that would be sad. But I even heard someone criticizing sound waves since it’s a similar type of science. I was like well we need to hear things you know
This was very informative. Please do one for air fryers too. I've heard many times that they could cause cancer. Thanks

Thank you for this. I sleep with a Bluetooth eye mask and soothing sleep stories/music. I was worrying about this a lot as my mum died from glioblastoma, but I cannot sleep at all without it. 😢
Yes please keep doing these they are so good at dispelling information
Great video and fascinating stats! Shouting out our audiologist colleagues, who I know are screaming: "But where is the mention of noise exposure risks from listening at high dBs?!". What we SHOULD be fearful of is people developing sensorineural hearing loss secondary to prolonged exposure to loud headphones.
I remember, when growing up, that you did not want to live near power towers as people who did so often got very sick (brain & blood cancers?). Only the very poor lived there.
Who else threw their phone away after watching this video 😂
I assume you're posting this from your desktop PC, where you didn't watch the video
Hey Dr. Mike! Thanks for the video, I've been wondering about this from some time.
I'd love to hear your thoughts on long-term ear health as it relates to headphones, earphones, and other audio devices, because that's also something I've been thinking about as well.
I love how all videos ultimately helps us understand what scientific evidence means, and what it does not!
Only People who are Watching this video with AirPods can like this comment
i didnt expect i would ever write such a basic comment, but this video is very informative and interesting! u got a new subscriber
DOCTOR MIKE!!! Doctor ER is copying you on TH-cam. His thumbnails copy your style and his profile picture, it’s literally just a cheap knock-off of yours.
I had a physics teacher in middle school who tried to convince us about this myth and the cherry on top is that he is now my sister's head teacher. Glad you made this video!
Thank you. My mom told this to me when I was like 12 and being a kid didn’t know how to do my own research, I’ve been trying to find videos and articles that are actually professionals
Phone addiction is definitely a real thing I definitely have it and thanks for telling me to take air pod breaks definitely needed to hear that but I’ve noticed changes in my sight and hearing not good because of my phone and headphones so I’m trying to stay away as much as I can and limiting myself to a small amount, a day of cell phone use
your vision can get worse even without a phone. if u think its the blue light then use night shift
I wear my AirPods Pro 12 plus hours a day. I’m driving an extremely loud FedEx truck, so the noise cancelling saves my ears. I’m usually listening to a podcast or music when I need an extra boost. So.. I guess I’d rather get blasted with radiation than hearing loss.. maybe lol. Thanks for this video Mike! Love your educational videos.
Unfortunately, at this time you need to know who performs a study and whether or not that person/group has any financial conflict of interest with the possible outcomes. Including the major medical journals and governmental regulation organizations.
Honestly these videos help my anxiety so thank you dr Mike ❤
❤ This is really helpfull to me as a healthcare student. I had to be already a graduated but that is it! Amazing info. 🙏 Much respect to you Dr. Mike.
Manufactured foods and Plastic are more like to cause cancer. Unfortunately. 😢
Sugar, Carbohidrates and BPA are more likely to be harmful for people.
We're only aware to know if It can cause cancer is when We all get old.
Doc Mike, thanks for your comprehensive info on this topic. This is a concern since airpods and the like are positioned near the brain. Now I’m curious about Bluetooth wireless speakers. You gave good resources to look help do research; much thanks!
I’m pretty sure my hobby of “touching grass” is gonna kill me faster than Bluetooth.
Would be cool to do a video about the cancer risks of aspartame and zero sugar drinks for example
Most people still can't hear "possible link" without thinking that means "confirmed" and don't bother digging into how a study was limited, flawed, or had no statistically signifcant findings if they think that study supports their view.
And people still use studies to support their own conclusions on seperate matters entirely without considering how they may be different, such as bluetooth headphones emitting 10-400x less radiation than cell phones.
Something that wasn’t mentioned though, is the slave/master mechanism that a lot of earphones use to sync audio and communicate with one another. Earphone like AirPods are also able to switch slave/master.
Love this video! Very informative and transparent.
It would be really interesting yo study the low frequency on communication devices and it's effect on mental heath. Does it alter the chemistry or way our neurons work? For example the increase on diagnosis in TDAH, Autism, Depression, and so on.
Can u do a video addressing this topic? Thanks ❤
Bluetooth devices are incredibly low power transmitters. Risk factors for RF exposure are frequency and power output. And RF power levels drop rapidly with distance due to the inverse square law. Bluetooth is near a semi-dangerous frequency. Remember that microwaves operate at around 2.4 GHz just like wifi and bluetooth, but they operate at VERY high power levels(1000-1500 watts is common), while consumer devices are operating at very low power levels(topping out around a watt or two for cell phones, varies by model, and milliwatts for bluetooth).
In other words, you're going to feel the heat before your body is actually damaged.
It's important to dig deep to determine who funded the studies.
I'd be more concerned with the volume on those headphones and the risk of hearing loss rather than radiation.
It's funny how people tend to single out single threats while ignoring the worst ones. The wifi router is probably the strongest radio wave emitter in most homes. Bluetooth is one of the weakest signals. Also radio frequencies have less energy than visible light, so probably less dangerous at similar exposure levels.
People panicing with Bluetooth, while their WiFi is on 24/7 so they can browse TikTok ....
My mom was worried airpods would send signals to each other through my brain causing damage due to the radiation lol
For sure cell phone usage can be dangerous. Based on my experience and some others that have questioned it on the internet, having it in my pocket caused the skin under my clothing to become a different texture, shiny and extra smooth, but not in a good way. My grandmother had to stop putting her phone up to her ear when taking calls cause the same thing was happening to her skin on her face where it would rest. Aside from that, I can hear a ringing in my ears + get sick before a phone call comes in and when around cell phone lines. Also it’s been proven the frequency in our phones can disrupt our sleep. So it’s definitely doing damage, we just haven’t figured out 100% how it fully affects us.
Nah. Your phone isn't the cause. Go check a doctor, psychiatrist or dermatologist.
Its not only wireless devices. The electrical wiring inside your walls emit EMFs as well.
Every weird thing I think .. can this kill me this channel automatically have a video on it lol
