The BEST SONG off Darkness. The most creative…the last of the Bruce Springsteen of the first 3 records. Everything about it is great. Original sounding. Adam Raised a Cain is the other track that had a good share of that quality. A song doing something, going somewhere, where you don’t expect it to. Doesn’t sound like anything else he’d done or what anyone else was doing. You could argue that all of Darkness had that quality…Badlands…Prove it All Night…Promise Land…you might say the whole album sounded nothing like his previous records. I could give you that. But for me, I found those songs musically uninteresting. But CANDY’S ROOM…that was ALWAYS a gem to me. What hooked me on him. I love this clip… it says it all.

Bruce was a blue collar man when he made this album, his best album, Darkness on the edge of town, the only album I ever bought where every single song was great! Bruce has shifted further and further left as he ages but I forgive him because Darkness is my favorite album of all time! I have no choice but to forgive THE BOSS!

I can't tell you about the tone but I can tell you I'm pretty sure he takes everything a whole step up, so 2 frets up from the normal tabs if that helps at all
Maybe there's some compression going on? Also he used to use pretty high-gain pick ups. Not sure about the Darkness ones but for instance in the 80s he used Seymour Duncan QP. So yeah my bet is high gain pick ups + amp driven quite loud + compression. Hope that helps.
