    The only thing that bothers me is that it seems to be directly made as a response to the wokeness. Don’t get wrong, Disney’s adaption is a joke and these companies adapting with American ideals is annoying, but if you’re going to make an adaption it should be from a place of wanting to pay respect to the culture of it and having a real passion for the original material. Maybe it will be good but I enjoy when art is made for more than just wanting to prove a point. I also don’t know everything about the project.

    Don't be surprised about the lack of quality in historical content in US entertainment. No matter the political leaning, art directors in the US have a huge ego and everything that gets done is based on what they think looks "cool" instead of what it looks correct. Their creativity is limited.

    I think the biggest problems for Americans is that we don't really have an understanding of what Folk Lore and Fairy Tales (or Fairy Stories if you a Tolkienist) actually are. I think this comes from the fact that we have no real collection of Folk Lore of our own. Some areas of the country have a few stories here and there, but nothing for the entire country. As a result, we don't study what IS written and we have forgotten they even existed - like The Jersey Devil (southern New Jersey) or The Mothman (north-western West Virginia). Others are "tall tales" loosely based on real people, like Davey Crocket or John Henry. But we don't teach them anymore. So we have borrowed other culture's folk lore and *Americanized* it - or, as you stated, "Disneyfied" them.
    Case in point:
    Most Americans know the Walt Disney animated version of "Snow White", but that's not how the story ends. The "wicked woman" goes back to her "Looking-glass" and finds out that a prince is marrying the "fairest of all." So she goes to their wedding and finds out Snow White is NOT dead and she is in fact the bride. But luckily for our heroine, "... iron slippers had been put upon the fire..." They were put on the "wicked woman" and she was forced to dance until she died. Not only do most Americans not know this, they couldn't tell you if "Snow White" (or "Little Snow White" in my translation) is a Grimm's Brothers fairy tale, a Hans Christian Anderson, or someone else's. I find that very sad.

    What I found particularly funny about the Daily Wire Snow White stunt is that they specifically made a point about not having a controversial main actress with divisive political opinions. And then they put Brett Cooper front and center of their project. The Brett Cooper who is often called the female Ben Shapiro and is easily as abrasive as him. And Ben is famously as smooth as coarse grit sandpaper.

    • @thelemurofmadagascar9183
      @thelemurofmadagascar9183 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Cooper isn't anywhere near as abrasive as Shapiro lmao. Cooper is pretty much the average, young, modern conservative. Most of her opinions are tolerable and not too outlandish. Shapiro on the other hand is the stereotypical boomer conservative who acts like a jerk for the sake of it.
      I'm saying this as a non-conservative who doesn't like either one of them btw.

    Your point about people dressing up as vikings has low-key irked me for a bit. I'm Dutch so the earlier Germanic era of Scandinavia is part of our heritage. Seriously, whilst HEILUNG is more inspired by the Germanic era then the viking one, I really would like to put all these people in front of their music videos as they actually try to recreate the aesthetics and instruments from the time period they're trying to capture and showcase how the warpaint was actually done.

      I actually use to hate bollywood movies but when watching those films from 90s and 2000s, it's actually not that bad, sure some parts are unrealistic but that's the magic of it, is the mystery, if anything that was the golden era of bollywood, I heard rumours that Tollywood is taking over now.

      Tollywood is marginally better. I recently watched Kantara, and while I think they did a good job with the acting and the folklore bit, it would have been a lot better if they'd kept in the grit and gore. I would still like to see more realism in Indian mainstream films - at least for the movies that aren't comedies or romcoms. The romcom people can have their fun. BUT we share the same love of authenticity and folklore. So it's no surprise that Netflix and Daily Wire are two sides of the same coin. What is the largest and most important market in Hollywood? UNITED STATES. The strength of Hollywood is that they succeed (with the help of the government) in exporting their products. Products tailor-made for puritans, do-gooders, and intellectually lazy Americans. The worst part? The United States has some of the best historians of antiquity and the Middle Ages in academia, but it doesn't use them. Do you know why Mulan was a failure in China and not Kung-Fu Panda? In one of these two films, the director called on academics specializing in Chinese history and culture... Besides, Mulan was never a Han... The Chinese know that... .not the Americans...

      @@FolkWalkCZDaily Wire also spouts right-wing reactionary propaganda points which are factually untrue, and they fan the flames of non-existing culture wars by hyperventilating by 'everything being so wOkE these days', while they suck ass at producing anything else besides conservative ragebait. They don't like 'western culture' (whatever that is anyway) but their idea of it, which is a very self-obsessed, chauvinistic, pseudohistoric and downright false conception of Europe and the United States.
      I always find with these nationalist that as much as they claim that they want to save culture and history from the clutches of political correctness and the woke left, the opposite is often true: they don't seek to critically examine the past and to learn from it, but to fawn over it, worship some fantastical version of the past like a fetish, constructing myths about how great things once were and how it's all been ruined by 'others', while brushing away the unsavoury, dark and morally questionable aspects that don't paint the so-called glorious ancestors as heroes.

  • @MrSirFluffy
    @MrSirFluffy ปีที่แล้ว +5

    To be fair they are Saxons and not Vikings haha, jk
    As far as the "pretty" fairytale look, its supposed to be clean and pretty. I get why you'd want something more grounded, but Snow White in America is supposed to be whimsical and idealized.
    Its supposed to be a fantasy that every little girl would want to live in... and they don't want to ve dirty. They want to be in a beautiful dress singing in a clean vibrant forest without somehow getting dirty.
    As for the Pendragon Cycle, it includes things like Atlantis and such so i imagine its going to be not historically accurate at all. Its more about the story than a historical documentary, as long as they don't have cars or a smart phone it should work.
    I "interned" at a studio once, it was a few of us and all we did was manage some set electronics for a few bucks. I remember talking to the costume department often.
    One of the girls told me she KNOWS how to make accurate attire, but they would run into the issue of everyone looking to similar.
    So the industry slowly developed archetypal "uniforms" so the groups will be easy to differentiate for viewers.
    Their are the imperial types (shiny armor), royals (fancyeather armor), rag tag (civilians with random armor), and barbarians (vikings and such with furs).
    Doesnt matter the setting or story, they try to implement the archetypes. There is plenty of play room but this is what they try to do for the most part.
    For instance, the set was for a movie that never aired about a fantasy world. It was a test project for a company. They had "viking" like people, but they weren't Vikings. They just used the archetypes. It works. People like fantasy nations to be in thematic boxes.

    • @inferiorinferno8859
      @inferiorinferno8859 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You do know that Snow White doesn't originates from American culture, as this video points out numerous times. You cannot make a fairytale from our cultures from our lands and tell us how it's supposed to look. That's highly disrespectful. Listen to the actual cultures when we say we want it to be depicted realistically. You can still have pretty dresses and be more realistic.
      For god's sake, look up 'De Varkenshoeder' as that comes from a German TV show that adapts one fairytale per episode with De Varkenshoeder being the Dutch dub for the Swineherd by Hans Christian Andersen. It literally has the princess wear beautiful rococo inspired pieces that make that cheap looking costume Brett is wearing to absolute shame. Yet its more realistic and shot in a way less glamorous way. We Europeans know how to make it work.
      As a woman, considering your username is very male coded, your comment about girls not wanting to get dirty is highly insulting. Please, girls absolutely play in the dirt just like boys do! Perhaps American girls don't, they're generally way weaker of spirit then we European women as even our richest, most peaceful countries have survivors walking around of a literal genocide and we still struggle with either being at war or taking in everyone's refugees. European women are far less coddled, and again, its our story.
      Also why do you people even need to differentiate between armors?! It's not like people care to create entirely different outfits when portraying the military so its unnecessary to do so for historic European warriors. You guys don't even know how offensive they are!
      You yourself are describing Vikings to be amongst the barbarian class, but none of you even know what that actually meant! Barbarians originally referred to anyone who wasn't Roman or Greek, however in the context of costumes and what you refer to isn't kept exclusive to Romans and Greeks in movies, is it? Because the modern definition of barbarian is to be uncivilized and whilst they could be brutal in battle, by the modern definition of barbarians the Vikings AREN'T one.
      Vikings literally had the first parliament in history and our common ancestor the Germanic tribes were the first European culture were men started wearing pants underneath their tunics before other European cultures did. Did that costume designer who you said knows how to make it all accurately, actually know that?!
      Stop telling us to what you want to do with our stories. It doesn't belongs to you Americans and your entitlement to other people's cultures is revolting.

    • @MrSirFluffy
      @MrSirFluffy ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@inferiorinferno8859 I'm talking about the American archetypal "princess" fairytale. This was popularized by Disney. ALL modern princess tails in the US are clean and pretty. Also, when I say "girls" I mean little girls and not women. The princess fantasy is tailored to the feminine girly girl part of their imagination.
      I am a boy, and I can ALSO enjoy all sorts of themes and even feminine stories. However, sometimes I watch "manly" things because it appeals to certain parts of me. Like big trucks, muscular heroes fighting monsters, and apocalypse films with guns.
      A girl who likes to play in the dirt is not in that mode all the time. Many girls love horror and murder stuff, but not all the time. Sometimes they want clean and pretty, and that is OKAY. I have young siblings and they love the outdoors but they ALSO love the girly princess stuff. Do you know any girls who wear fancy dresses and purposely get them dirty? No. They wish they could frolic in a magical forest in a dress without getting it dirty.
      I get that Snow White is European, no duh. What I am saying is the reason US princess movies have this look is because that's what young girls tend to like.
      Also, I am just using the words the wardrobe people told me. The Vikings aren't barbarians, but CHILDREN don't want to waste time differentiating groups of people looking at details.
      They want to see shiny armor group vs shirtless people wearing furr. Or perhaps leather armor people vs fancy gold armor people. Just VERY clear distinctions.
      The viking don't HAVE to be the shirtless furr people, they could be the leather armor people or whatever. The point is they have a handful of categories and stuff one group from a story into one of those categories.
      Also, chill with the "viking were civilized" crap. No one cares. Cowboys also didn't all wear cowboy hats and have shootouts on the daily in the middle of a desert. You don't see me crying about it every time I see a western.
      Cinema vikings are what people like, cinema Cowboys are what people like, and the same with pirates and other glamorized groups.
      No one cares too see a boring Vikings do paperwork in a damn parliament. No one wants to see a cowboy go to the bank and return home to do his job as a smith, never running into an issue that involves a revolver.
      We wanna see Vikings raid and do legendary battle stuff and cowboys shoot each other and smack other men around. We want to see Greeks battle and fight in arenas against lions and not care if it's getting mixed up with Roman stuff lol
      If I want accuracy I'd watch a documentary. Turns out being a cowboy was just a basic life of moving cattle, BORING. Outlaws and Western legends actually only shot a few people, BORING. We want ridiculous, Outlaws who wipeout a whole gang in an afternoon like it's nothing. Vikings who slice people in half with a sword on the weekends and takeover lands on weekdays.
      FANTASY!

      Disney is NOT Disney anymore. The talent is gone, the vision is gone, and the magic is gone. Disney died, what's left is its nametag.
