It's a funny story, how I first discovered Billie Eilish. At the start of the year I dyed the tips of my hair a nice loud green on a whim, and then in March (before lockdown started) I was playing at an open day for a wedding venue, and someone came up to me to chat and commented, "oh I really like your hair, it reminds me of Billie Eilish!" At the time I had heard of her just from seeing interviews and things appear online, but I hadn't heard her music, so at that point I thought, let's find out what this is all about then... turns out, I absolutely loved it! And it was all because I fancied dying my hair green. Life is full of surprises. Earlier this year I was commissioned to write a pop arrangement of Bad Guy for RNCM Young Harps, which is a youth project run by the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, UK, that provides workshops several times a year for harpists between the ages of 5 and 18. The arrangement was scheduled to be workshopped and performed at the Edinburgh Harp Festival, a big event in the UK Harpist's calendar, but sadly that was cancelled due to Covid-19, so RNCM's wonderful Head of Harp, Eira Lynn Jones, approached me with a new idea - to create a video workshop for students based around my arrangement. I made this music video especially so that workshop participants could play along with me from home, and also to (hopefully!) show young harpists that the harp can sound like all sorts of things, not just the traditional things I came to expect from the harp when I was growing up. You can check out my workshop for Young Harps on Facebook if you want to learn more about how I arrange and use percussive effects: facebook.com/watch/?v=542843689745852 Every element of this audio recording was created with harps, and has been treated with real time effects processing - so in theory this arrangement could be performed live (if you had 4-5 players available to perform together - here's hoping that can happen someday in the not-too-distant future!). This video also marks a milestone for me as my first video featuring the Delta Harp, made by Salvi, my first purely electric harp! I really think the sound of the two harps blends well together - what do you think?
Your videos are inspiring ! I really like your percussion and want to learn more Harpinhankhogan at gmail dot com please send a link to your patron page
Amy, you are magical! I got so excited when I saw you were on an electric, of course you would kill it. Someday, I'll be a millionaire and will absolutely need you at my re-do wedding 💗❤ (the first one was rained out!)
I love hearing modern songs on the harp too, but I'll argue whether this is how she showed how capable a harp is. The use of harp in classical music is way complicated than how it's used in pop songs' covers- way more techniques, and more things such as phrasing, articulation, dynamics, musicality etc are needed to be expressed in a piece of music. Anyways not to be nitpicky, i like her performance too and i am happy that classical instruments such as harps are more popular and performances are more accessible in the audiences' eyes.
@@1-vivi Respectfully disagree re: classical music requiring more things. All music requires those things. The harp has been a primarily classical instrument for a few centuries, and the only thing stopping harpists applying the full force of their technical knowledge to other genres right now is inclination. Plenty of my pop covers apply techniques which I have worked long and hard to be able to achieve. I don't believe the genre that music falls into devalues the performance and I hope that in time, other people will see that too. With regard to this cover in particular, maybe this isn't the best example of how "capable" a harp is in a modern context, but that's because I created this arrangement to be played by students, so it had to be more accessible as well as well-known so it'd be fun and recognisable.
I've heard it before and I don't feel it, but when you play it on the harp, I like it very much. I think you sound better than the original. You're so cool.
This is amazing! Thank you for showing the world that a harp is not as limited as people grow to see it, this is truly inspiring for young harpist like me.
This is actually designed to be played by four harpists live - most of the way through there are two independent parts that change over the backing, so slightly too much for a looper, but all the effects could be added live... if I was four people.
I would love to see more videos on how you arrange or how you get ideas and successfully turn them into a song. I’m in the process of writing my first music video album for the harp and have my own Kickstarter going, but I want to look at how other harpists arrange and see if anything they’re doing can help improve my own methods of composition and arranging.
This is just fantastic Amy, I absolutely love it! I only know the original because it's used on an advert and my husband always does excessive head bobbing to it when it comes on, so I sang it to my niece and she told me what it was. I personally think it's a great song.
I mainly come to see, Amy Turk and how she looks. Then, I think about the music. Unless, it's Zelda music, and then it's the best of both worlds! I didn't know there was an electric harp! That's so cool! Do you ever, or have you ever thought about playing some Tchaikovsky or classical music? Just a thought. How's your fingers? I hope they are healed, Amy. Thanks for uploading.
That could sound amazing on a harp, but the background "shimmer" sound would probably need to be left out. Curious if that part is 100% electronic or instrument derived.

nice story. :D
Imma be honest...I didn't expect the harp to go this hard.
Ahhh I love hearing modern songs on the harp! You are really taking this instrument to new levels and showing how capable it is!!!!!
Modern music is new levels? It’s a funny song and a welcome differentiation but nowhere near the great composers of the 1700 - 1800s.

She really is one of the things I live most about Amy!
Following in the footsteps of Alice Coltrane, Dorothy Ashby, Brandee Younger, and others
Using blutac putty thing for that constant pizzicato sound is peak prepared harp genius omg
This deserves the same 900.000.000 views the original video clip has.
ok queen go off
I've heard it before and I don't feel it, but when you play it on the harp, I like it very much. I think you sound better than the original. You're so cool.
this is the most badass harp cover I’ve ever listened too
This is cool as heck, it really works well in this arrangement!! The little "I'm the baaad guyyyy" drop off sounds really cool on harp! Great work!
It just works so well 🙂
This is amazing! Thank you for showing the world that a harp is not as limited as people grow to see it, this is truly inspiring for young harpist like me.
What a cool sound is this! I cannot help dancing whenever I hear the sound. I want to get a DELTA harp.
Great music as always, I like how you "dress the part " ha
The percussive elements are amazing !🤪 Hope you'll continue to show how versatile the harp can be. Super performance, bravo!

I’m a huge fan of a lot of bass, and not usually this type of instrument sound, but as soon as I heard the fairy fountain, I love it now 😂
The "cymbal" is ingenious

What a great version of the song you made! With a looper you could perform the whole thing by yourself on stage.
This is actually designed to be played by four harpists live - most of the way through there are two independent parts that change over the backing, so slightly too much for a looper, but all the effects could be added live... if I was four people.
Just excellent...👍👏🏻

HI Andrew, check out the full list of Amy's videos. She plays all kinds of music.
I dont know any anyone can dislike this, this brilliant
Well done!
Can you play "In space" from "Röyksopp"?
That could sound amazing on a harp, but the background "shimmer" sound would probably need to be left out. Curious if that part is 100% electronic or instrument derived.
I' am the firsssssst guy
