This man makes a lot of practical sense in regard to exercise and how it relates to Parkinson's. I had a 15 hour brain surgery about 18 months ago and then found out a few months later I have Parkinson's. I have been an exercise nut all of my life and I really believe it has been a benefit in helping my balance and tremors control. Thank you Daniel.
Im in England and was unaware of these posts and have now benefited by viewing many, going from one to another as a newly diagnosed but late stage PD person. Each session is so valuable I can not describe. The mystery, isolation, dread, struggle are all diminished and enlighted by your expert and well facilitated sessions giving understanding and guidance. With PD each of us has to weave together the different issues we experience physically and through the mind. Thank you all
Posture, Gait, Balance . I find golf the ideal sport. I walk the course, using an electric golf bag trolley, which helps balance. 3 and a half hours =endurance, and the hand-eye co-ordination is built in. 6 golfing partners, all good fun = lots of laughs and good competition. Twice or three times a week is ideal. Lucky to stay in Scotland, so not expensive for good courses.
I really enjoyed this program. I do not have PD, however, I work w/ PD patients at our local YMCA. I just became certified in Rock Steady Boxing and my participants really enjoy it. Thank you Davis Phinney Foundation for these informative lectures.
Great encouraging video to get you moving. My watch reminds me to get up and move. As I've exercised I'm not nearly as unstable on my feet. The more I move the more stable. Start slow.
Riding my recumbent tadpole trike has improved my quality of life immensely over the last three years. By the way, I have been living with PD for around twenty years.
Any advice for lifting when the joints are twisted up from dystonia? I cant not lift because i already have herniated discs which used to cause problems before an ortho put me on weights, but now the dystonia prevents me from lifting with proper posture and im afraid im grinding up my joints. Needless to say, i already cant lift much for my age group due to the strength loss of pd, but not lifting at all would be much worse.
Hi Anton - this is a tough situation for sure. I would recommend you reach out to our Ambassador Kristi LaMonica here: davisphinneyfoundation.org/ambassador/kristi-lamonica. I bet she will have some suggestions for you!
Great talk thank-you. Exercise combined with infrared laser three times a week has slowed many of our customers symptoms. Our lasers are developed and approved for Parkinson's disease symptoms and are painless and easy to apply at home. Infrared laser therapy does NOT interfere with medication.
You should observe what happens to my 58-year-old brother almost *immediately* after he consumes cow's milk or any foods made mostly or entirely from cow's milk. He is currently recovering from medication-induced Parkinsonism in the Senior Behavioral Health ward at Beth Israel Deaconess Plymouth. Almost immediately after eating cottage cheese or yogurt, for example, my brother's severe body stiffness (especially in his lower legs) returns, along with an equally severe and sudden return of physical anxiety symptoms. Our entire family seems to prefer a very high dairy diet, and consequently many of us are prone to getting frequent leg and foot cramps, along with varying levels of anxiety. The only way we can sometimes offset the muscle stiffness is by eating high magnesium foods like potatoes or potato chips along with the milk based foods.
Phooey! Makes sense, but crashing to the floor every five minutes will bring your exercise session to a screeching halt. Not is it simply embarrassing, But has brought me endless injuries. Last time I fell, I tore my rotator cuff. I'm So SICK of living in pain!
Hi Karen - We tackle this very question on one of our podcast episodes here. You can listen to it, read the transcript, or just read through the supporting material on boxing and Parkinson's here: davisphinneyfoundation.org/the-latest-and-greatest-on-boxing-and-parkinsons/
Lots of talk about exercise for the first half. Did he ever talk about diet? From my athlete's life (cycling, running) I would say the older I get (60) the more important diet becomes.
Thanks for watching, Tim. Nutrition isn't his area of expertise, and the goal of this talk was the latest research on exercise. That said, no exercise can outrun a bad diet. We have lots of content on the importance of nutrition and living well here: davisphinneyfoundation.org/resources/nutrition/
Are we listening to the doctor or we listening to just the words of Dr Bloom? Does he have no opinions of his own? You really think that those of us are who are in our 60s to 90s are going to want to play video games which is basically what it is? Nuts
It is often hard to start a recorded interview. Dr. Corcos is a kind man, and we are grateful for his contributions. Certainly no offense taken from the way this conversation started.

Yes! Exercise is medicine. Thank you for watching.

HI Bill - Thank you for watching. I'm glad they have been helpful to you.
Good luck!

Inspiring, thank you.

Thanks for your comment! Golf is a great sport both generally and for people living with Parkinson's!
Awesome 👌
Excellent discussion and information on the benefits of exercise as well as quality of life connections for those of us that have PD

Mary Ellen - That's so great. We need more RBS coaches, so I'm so glad you get to bring it to more people now.
So well made. Thx.

I was diagnosed 2 years ago, early stage ofPD, to make my hands stronger I do calligraphy, everyday at least 1 hour, helps a lot, puzzle, walking.

The "best" exercise is the one you enjoy and will continue long term. Break a sweat!

That's great, Mike. I love your name Trike with Mike. Happy riding!

Wow. That's definitely a severe reaction. I hope he gets better soon. What happens when you all take dairy out completely?
You should try this 😅iparki❤❤

I'm sorry, Rebecca. That is so frustrating. Have you found any stationary options that work for you?
Can people with Parkinson’s strengthen muscle s
Yes! Absolutely.
What is dart exercise?
I believe it is a Pilates move. It seems it'd help with flexibility. Maybe Google "dart exercise." 👍😊
I thought he said ‘dance’
I have POTS so my heart rate is always high.....I wish that counted haha
Has rock steady boxing good
Has rock steady been studied

What’s eating the professor at the start? He seems irritatingly distracted and it’s quite rude to the lady interviewing him

Getting old -- it's not for kids!
Would you call housework activities...
Sure. Any movement is better than no movement!
