- This week in the shop Trena strips and refinishes a mirrored dresser from the 1920s. She glazes between clear coats to finish.

I almost never disagree with your choice, but I am with the customer in this one. You have turned the old dresser into a family heirloom. Wonderful!!
It was purely a matter of preference. Maybe the customer was just in the mid for a lighter tone. It's gorgeous!
I know that when Trenna is given free reign, her work is never less then amazing and I would have to loved to see how this piece would have turned out with her choice. But it is so wonderful this way that I can only think that it would be like arguing which level of perfection is more perfect.
I agree I prefer the glaze the customer chose too. Beautiful job
I liked both, there really wasn't much difference to me. If I had to choose, I would have gone with the darker glaze that Trena preferred. The customer's choice was also a good look, though
I like this choice also. I think the black would have been fine but I’m not sure I liked the color it was taking the wood. This looks more true to it’s age, I think. I get where Trena is coming from though. I’m not a pro, just have a lot of old family pieces that need refinishing. Sometimes I restore, sometimes I try something new. I recently did my mom’s old 70s style octagonal occasional table. Always liked the shape, less so the 70s early American style trims and color. I mixed up a lighter stain and changed some of the design. It’s kind of a Frankenstein, and the color doesn’t really go with my other furniture, but it’s something I wanted to experiment with and I’m happy with it.
Wow, you can almost hear that poor dresser breathing a sigh of relief at having all that dark finish removed from it. It looks beautiful - not particularly my taste in furniture, but the wood is so pretty and I’m so glad your customer decided to go with letting the wood shine through. Amazing work 🙂
I agree. I think dark furniture sucks the light out of a room. Plus, my wife cannot stand what she refers to as "roachy brown." ;)
You really did it this time, you took it to the next level with one. it is so beautiful.i love the bare wood look. So light and airy.great job
Looks fantastic, The Customer chose it well. The finish was still done with the skill of one of the best furniture restorers on the internet.
Thankyou🥰
Wonderful refresh!! Magnificent job as usual. I was glad to see the casters were removed. Dislike those things immensely .😅

That's funny - I was wondering what happened to them!
Turned out great. Nice to see your Dad there with you. He must be very proud of his Daughter.
Hi Trena, Very, very often
when you have stripped a piece of furniture I hear myself saying 'please, please leave it like that' (apart from a clear coat or polish). Personally, I wouldn't have used either colour I'd have left it as it was cut from the magnificent tree. I appreciate you're in 'Restoration' business. Season's Greetings if we don't see you again this week. Lll
I know but you have to protect it it’s just dust your seeing. Not actual wood color that’s why it’s white
Trena you're like the Superhero of furniture restoration...I'm so serious.
Lol awe Thankyou
So pretty!! It really turned out so nice! You made the dresser smile again. That shot of outside was spectacular! Beautiful country!!
Hi. Glad to see you back and loving the new projects. You are an amazing craft woman and teacher.😊
Thank you so much!
Still following from Colorado. I admire your skills and opinion furniture. Another happy customer 👏👏👏
As your dad might remind you, you are not in the furniture restoration business. You are in the customer satisfaction business. I am glad that you made them happy. Great job with the gel stain over the lacquer finish. I am sure that your dad is happy to be working with you again. A double win.
So true!
Great job really happy you go with a lighter tone.
Very nice outcome on this one. I was suprised that the color came off with the finish, but it looks so much better as a lighter shade. And a great lesson on glazing with gel stains. Thank you.
Lolololol. I have to say, I agree with the customer, I loved the warm tone she chose. I cannot imagine going back to that very dark color with the very odd shading. This restoration is terrific, Trena! Thank you!
Well I'm "coming in from" Eltham (hard T, not a soft th) in SE London, England, Britain, the World. What a lovely dresser! SO MUCH BETTER than in all its days of stained ugliness. You did 100% the right thing. I LOVE THIS! You, and that beautiful timber, have made my day. (Is there anything better than wood? I mean really. Ahhhh...)
When I saw the last of the old finish wiped off the drawer I knew I would leave it natural. I was happy when the customer chose my favorite of the two great stains. This dresser is one of my top favorite pieces I've watched you refinish.
The music used in your videos is top notch. It adds to my enjoyment!
Tha kyou
You’re the only furniture repair, restore woodworker I watch. ❤
Yay! Thank you!
Spectacular…love your work
Stunning piece of workmanship. X
Looks beautiful in the natural color. More of the wood grain is visible. I’m glad you showed her pictures and she went this route.
Trena, thank you for sharing with us the joy of seeing a piece of furniture transformed into a thing of beauty. Your loving hands have done it again.
Thank you so much!
Absolutely beautiful When I saw how light the wood became I thought it would be a shame to replicate the rather strange dark stain. The finished piece is lovely.
Alder is easy to use in cabinetmaking and can be stained to look like almost anything - so it is under the "mahogany finish"and "walnut finish" of a lot of old furniture.
And it's a lovely wood all on its own.
It's always great to see the true nature of the timber a piece is constructed from. A beautiful piece that deserves to be shown off.
WELL, TRENA, YOU CERTAINLY BROUGHT THAT BACK TO LIFE! THEY SHOULD HAVE STAINED IT THAT WAY BACK IN THE 20'S. BEAUTIFUL JOB AS USUAL.
Keep up the good work! GOD BLESS YOU,
A beautiful restoration. Looks so much nicer the lighter colour! The customer must be over the moon with it…she’s a beauty! Shop Dog is looking pretty with her haircut.
I think so too!❤️
I love your rhythm when stripping old finish and when spraying top coat, harmony and tranquility, thank you for this lovely piece. Happy Christmas from Australia
Thankyou
Yay - another fellow Aussie tuning in to this skilled master restorer.....love her work.👌👌💕💕
A gem 💎 of a little dresser. So much better and friendlier looking now.
When I first saw this piece I had to keep myself from zipping to the end because I knew you were going to make this dark horse look fresh and beautiful.
Glad the customer went along with you on the up to date finish.
Your color explanations are really helping me learn and understand concepts that will help me get the colors right.
I always think that the pieces of furniture you restore so lovingly to their natural beauty are almost crying out with joy and gratitude in response to the care & respect you show them. This one really is a Cinderella, so beautiful without its awful shaded finish.
🥰
Awesome work, you can almost see a sigh of relief from the dresser after stripping the old finish
This is what I love about your channel, real wood furniture. This one is a beauty!
I think the costumer choose the right tone. So warm and beautiful. From trashy to classy. That mixed colour, does it resemble a wood type you know of? In the old days people really tried to follow the "fashion" even if they couldn't afford it. People were so inventive those days. :) Thank you for sharing Trena, it is a treat every time! Merry Christmas and happy Holidays! 🎄✨🌟
Thankyou! You too!
So much bethat colour, love you never disappoint 😊
As soon as you stripped off that first drawer at the 5 minute mark I was hoping that they would NOT replace that dark finish. SUCH a cool transformation. Lots to learn about how to apply finish, thanks!
Lovely! Just lovely!
WOWWWWWWWWWWWWW. What a big difference. You are an expert and so is John.
Trena there is so much to say about this gorgeous dresser. First I think it looks so much better then that original awful shading that his so much and loved and hoped the customer was going natural with it. As for the shading it had to be a difficult decision between the two, I was going all natural till you did the jell then I couldn't decide between the two but leaned lighter. The hardware is beautiful. I think the choices on this dresser were spot on and should have been done this way originally to show off that beautiful wood whatever it really is. Personally I think this has been my favorite finished piece you've done yet. Hats off to you and the customer for the perfect choices.
Edit: one last thing, before the appliques looked out of place and now they look like they belong with perfect harmony to the piece. Bravo Trena fantastic job on a beautiful piece.
Thankyou!
Your restorations are astounding. Thank you,
Glad you like them!
I enjoy watching you do your job, it inspires me to try some of the refurbishments that I do attempt, thank you for your inspiration.
Awesome! Thank you!
@Trena~ Lovely! You gave that old gal a makeover that brought back her true hidden beauty .....I kind of feel like I could use one of those type of makeovers myself!!! LOL😅😅 I love the figure and colors of the Alder wood on the side panels and on the top, it's so unique and refined looking. BRAVO! Cheers to you my friend! ~~Christy~~
Thanks Christie! 🥰
It seems to be so much happier - a complete sweetheart of a piece ❤
Gorgeous piece. I go with the Client’s choice. Lovely job!
I like it better natural too. I agree with the owner about the glaze but, you are there and can actually see the true color. Thank you for sharing your fantastic work with us. Have a Merry First Christmas back home again.
Thanks for watching!
Beautiful, I agreed with you on the color for the finish, you have excellent taste
Thank you! Cheers!
The walnut was absolutely the right choice. Love it :-)
Love the lighter color. Beautifully done!
Nice! Beautiful!
It really is a handsome piece. Another great finishing success.
Thanks for another great restoration video Trenna! Many years ago I lived in Regina. One weekend we drove out to the Quappelle Valley and bought a large dresser with a "harp" mirror and 2 small drawers over 2 large drawers, quite a tall piece and painted white. We stripped it down to raw wood thinking it was Pine (those were country pine days) found BIRDSEYE MAPLE!!! Which explained the heavy weight of the dresser. Thank you for sharing your work with us. Happy Holidays to you and your family and to "Shop 🐕 " too!❤
Lovely story
The dresser is gorgeous. It would have been in the darker stain also, but I really love the glow that it has in this stain. You know, you could put together lime green and purple and have a piece come out exquisite.
It must be so wonderful to be working with your Dad. My father gave me my love of wood. I lost him 30 years ago and still miss him every day and discuss projects with him.
Thank you so much!
WOW! That really went well.
What a lovely Christmas treat for us, Trena! The reveal as you stripped off the old finish was stunning, no wonder you called your client to let her know what a hidden gem this was. The gorgeous final result really shows off the craftsmanship of the original. Thanks!
Love it great job!
Siempre Bien...Muy Bien Trenaa...Linda Restauración...Saludosss .......
So relieved you didn’t go dark ! Beautiful natural piece 🎉
I agree with your client, the warm walnut was beautiful. Good choice.
Absolutely beautiful. It always amazing me how a restoration can change and old tired piece into a gorgeous new piece.
i might add us humans! (just a very old one)
What a solid piece of furniture. So well made and the drawer pulls are gorgeous. The finish looks wonderful. Great job! Enjoy being with your dad.
Thanks so much!
I’ve never seen stripping improve a piece so much! Wow- eye opener!
12/17/23..Trenta 2day was a beautiful transformation of dark & scratchy Birch top, 3 drawer dresser w/large hinged Mirror..& very skinny turned legs...from dark brown to natural tan-sand color using your liquid stripper & light sanding. Simple routed 'oval' groves on front of 3 drawers (Brass ornate pulls) came out perfect! Much appreciate your close-up camera/lighting on those wooden (trapezoid shaped) slides for drawer edges. Also showing us the dove-tail horizontal supports for Alder exterior side pannels...like you said, this unit was very well made & now >>after your clean/strip/sand/urethene(?) & slightly darken oval groves
Thankyou!
I'm pleased the dark finish has gone. I agreed with your choice on the glaze, but hay ho, it's the Customer who will be looking at it every day. A beautiful piece.
Yep cheers
Merry Christmas. Just a great restore.
Such wonderful work on such a wonderful piece! You're AWESOME
Thank you! Cheers!
I’m glad she changed with her color. Beautiful
I'm with you on this one Trena, however it turned out to be a beautiful piece. Well done.
Thank you! 😊
I really like the glaze the customer chose. I was with you on the glaze choice until I saw the finished result. Gorgeous job. Thanks for sharing.
It could have been better lol
The natural beauty in this wood has finally been given its chance to shine. Your way would have been just as beautiful, maybe even more, given your skills and sensibilities. This is truly a beautiful piece on its own, and especially fortunate to have your amazing attention 👏👏👏
Wow, thank you!
Ok, I have not forgiven you totally yet, for moving, however, it is so nice that you are back with your family. You sure have not lost your touch to do such exemplary work. In case you are wondering, it is 44F here today ( I still don't use metric, I'm old and have enough junk in my brain without that).
Very nice finished product!
Thanks for sharing, Trena!
You are so welcome!
I/we don't have access to such beautiful 'proper' wooden furniture where we are, but just love and admire the beautiful magic you weave in restoring/refinishing some, ALL of these gorgeous pieces. Super workmanship👌👌💕💕
Thank you so much 😊
Your green gloves added to your red apron presented A special festive flavor today. The gift of a gel stain highlighter is a dramatic idea I hope to use soon.
Lol nice!
I love how this came out!
The before pictures look like landfill material; the finished product is, no doubt prettier than when it was new. You do amazing work.
Excellent!!! I was so glad your customer didn't go with that old painted look. It is a beautiful piece now. Love it. You have Skills.
I love this dresser. Beautiful work.
Thank you! 😊
4:30 The heart shape here, with the sad eyes and open mouth, reminds of Munch's _The Scream_ .
20:06 As to the warm over the neutral color: It may also have to do with the other furniture this piece will wind up sitting next to. :)
23:35 Wonderful result! My compliments to the chef! ;)
So much cleaner looking with the glaze and clear coating. Just beautiful!
Thank you! Cheers!
Love the nature finish with the pop of color in the grooves.
I haven't watched the whole thing, but the light wood looks SO good ...
I agree with the customer on this one ! I like the warmth it gave it.❤
so lovely now! That old finish hid all the charm!
Watching the before and after transformation of this dresser reminded me of the old story “ugly duckling to beautiful swan”. Love the tint that the customer went with. Makes the entire dresser POP!
Love the glaze really put a nice touch!
Beautiful job. I’d have liked the darker stain too. But the customer is always right 😁
Beautiful job as always. i didn't realize gels could be so forgiving in terms of subtlety. Thanks for being a great teacher and inspiration. By the way, i love when your dad photo bombs your videos. He must be so proud of you.
❤️
I liked the client's choice of finish.
Yes love the crispness of the black it was good funny how I hate the fading stain of the original piece as your refinishing just leaps out at you what a great job just love it
Im not really a fan unless it’s what the customer wanted I would have to do it
Beautiful job Trena. Although both choices were beautiful I too preferred the customers choice. Amazing job beautiful piece.
I absolutely love the way this turned out! It’s really a beautiful dresser that was hiding under that awful shaded mess!
Yes I wanted a bit more definition and contrast
It’s beautiful. I loved the darker glaze as well but it is 1000% better than the original
What a difference a refresh makes! Such a beautiful dresser.😊
It really is!
Lovely piece of furniture! I enjoy seeing the drawers and other pieces before and after stripping as well as the staining comparisons. Nicely done, Trena! 😎👍🏻
Thanks!
As soon as you removed the old dark finish, I was like..YES...that's a hidden beauty right there! So glad that the client went with the natural finish and I have to agree with her brown glaze choice. Sorry Trena! 😁Anyway great job once again!
That ok it still turned out beautiful
Very nice Trena
I agree-the more natural look is so much nicer!
Im glad the costumer picked the warm tone… so much nicer
A beautiful old dresser in need of re finish and you have made it so much better and a super nice dresser that will be beautiful for years to come
Yes, thank you
I lean towards a darker tone personally but if your customer wants it lighter then that's what they get. The designs on the drawers are really pretty. You did a fantastic job. Thank you for sharing.👍
Great work as always Trena.
