When I was a kid, we had something called “scratch art” (I think). It was multi-colored paper covered with black. To draw, you would use toothpicks or something to scratch the black off, and then you’d have a multi-colored drawing. It wasn’t quite the same, but sort of similar. You could buy the paper at the store, but my art teacher also taught us how to make it ourselves (I don’t remember how).
I'm extremely old and grew up poor so my parents never bought us art supplies, but in elementary school our teacher had us fill a piece of paper with crayons then cover it with a black crayon. It would take forever. Then we'd use our nails or whatever we could find to scratch off the black crayon wax to reveal the rainbow of colors underneath. As I said we were poor and I didn't have much toys or art supplies so I would spend hours doing this all the livelong day. Now I spend hours on social media. 🤷🏻♀️
We did it with crayons haha the colourful part did get pretty pastel if the scratches were deep
Wax crayons and black gouache yes. Doesn't work with oily paints. (TH-cam wanted me to say oily pants.)
I remember to 2000's or 90s lol
We draw on a paper with crayon, and then painted over with acrylic paint mixed with soap
I love scratch board art. The easiest way to "sketch" is by indent. Basically sketch on a normal piece of paper. When you're happy with the design. Place it over the board and use a ball point pen to trace the design with a bit of a heavy hand. You will get indents of the sketch without accidentally scratching the board or having to deal with lead transfer. It's much easier that way. I don't know if that is really the easiest way to do it but that was how I learned.
yes, that is how i was taught to do it,
I was taught that way, but also by putting chalk on the bottom of the sketch paper because it creates a faint line that's easier to see than an indent
Ashley Klaves 😭 might have to try it again
@kayl a i think so all tho print making requires more carving skills right, but it the same concept drawing in reverse
I commented the same thing, then deleted it cuz your instructions are better formatted than mine.
“Looks like there’s blood on his mouth” “Not that kinda artist”
Kasey: 👁👄👁
Lol
You mean Kasey golden?
For the 1% that are reading this, I hope you are safe and happy. You are blessed and never have to go through anything alone. Keep on keepin’ on. Have a great day!!
You have a great day to! I bet this comment made someone's day a little better.
Thank you very much 😊
Hope you have a wonderful day as well!💕

Tatimx 23 Thanks soo much :)
I love how Rin maintains her kid side and the way she's always so excited always hypes me up so thank u for keeping me happy ilyyy!💜
haha some call it immaturity. XP
@@drawingwiffwaffles if sticking with your inner child and finding joy in small things is immature, then maturity sucks eggs, have a nice day y'all
I used to get pre-made versions of these with animals already designed on them, I just had to scratch away the pattern, It's really fun.
yes! i always did these! i didnt know it was an actual art form though haha
My dad did a few, and the one I remember watching him do a part of it, was a wolf that he hung up on the wall.
Me too! I totally forgot it existed tho until this video haha
Me too!
OHHHHH I JUST STARTED DOING SCRATCH ART TOO!!! I have adhd and I find that this is very stimming and awesome. I hope you have a good day!
i'm so glad you enjoy it! i want to know what yours look like!
i have adhd i never thought to try this for stimming!! ive done scratch art once or twice but never to stim!!
Becky Mae I hadn’t thought of it either cause initially I thought the scratching would be uncomfortable but then I got started and suddenly it’s seven hours later and I was feeling amazing
I started watching waffles just before quarantine and I don’t regret it, before I started to watch her I would just draw weird stick people but then when I started to watch her I started to draw. At first I was just kind of doing it when ever and just using a pencil and some colored pencils I randomly found, but soon I started to actually buy stuff for my art and I gradually grew better, I found a medium I like and I found an art style I liked and now I understand why everyone loves doing art! A lot of fun and if waffles didn’t inspire me to start doing art I think I would have lived the rest of my like drawing stick figures. If you’re reading this waffles (which you probably aren’t) I want to say thank you and that you have changed my life :)
Sameeeeee
I recently started watching her vids too (like a few months ago) there sooo inspiring! There helping me get more into art!
Who else is absolutely in *love* with Rin's funny little voices that she always does?💖
Thank you so much Rin for commenting on my fan art video! You have no idea how much I love youuuu 🥺
Aahana Bhagat I know right it does sound like click bait but it is true 😂
Me🙋🏻♀️🙋🏻♀️
Meee
I saw your vidio of redrawing weelz I commented on it
Aahiri Girly girl aww thank u!
Me: on the verge of wanting to rip my ears off because the sound of the scratching
Also me: bears through it because waffles is making god tier art/content.
my skin has been crawling this entire episode.... But I sacrifice for the cause.. 😅🤣
I normally rewatch Waffles videos but I couldn’t with the latest charcoal one because of this same thing! The nails on a chalkboard thing is torturous
Just mute it you can still see the art y'know
I know I have the same problem with scratching noises it drives me insane.🥵
I feel odd bc it seems like everyone disliked the sound but I actually liked it soooooo :/
one time in primary school, we mixed black ink with eggs and painted magazines with it and then scratched it to create easter egg drawings. It was sort of like this
If I remember that right, there's a whole group of techniques that work more or less like that called grattage (at least in my native German) works with dried acrylics and black crayon over that, too :)
i forgot easter existed and i thought you meant easter eggs like, the hidden things in movies, games, etc
@@riotxfrosty9576 hahaha lol no we just scratched patterns and it looked interesting because of the colours of the magazines underneath
Lol who else wants to just give Rin a big hug when she's struggling? Just me? ......ok...
Nope, it's not just you, I do too.
Me tooo
M e
i miss hugs lol
hope the pandemic ends soon
@@drawingwiffwaffles When are you gonna do digital art? It's been so long.
I LOVE THIS MEDIUM !!! It's so satisfying scratching away at the paper, i like using the paper that has a rainbow gradient underneath instead of just white cuz you never know what color will be underneath heheh
yeah! we used to do that at church a bunch lol
Oh my gosh yes I love that kind 🌈
That paper is available at my local dollar store lol
I used to do the rainbow scratching thing, but I've made with crayons! You just need to make layers of random colors than cover everything with black :)just don't color with a lot of pressure or the other colors won't stick to it
Júlia M. Solti yooooo same name buddy ! i might try this thank you ^^

rin at 4:57 : might be little long more than I can chew ... but I have experience with bubble gum

I absolutely love your artwork, you're one of my favorite artists ever and you inspire me to draw everyday, I love watching your videos and I always draw with you while watching them, I feel like I'm a little less alone when I do that, you're an amazing artist and your style is so beautiful and unique ♥️
I'm not sure if this is ever gonna get to you but I just wanted to put it out there anyways and tell you to keep up with your amazing work ♥️
Thanks for taking time to tell me that Ana! 💜💜 I'm so glad we can share art together!
@@drawingwiffwaffles omg, you're welcome ♥️ it makes me super happy too
thanks for the heart btw ✨
I got goosebumps from the scratchy noises but even that wasn't enough to stop me from watching all the way till the end!!! Great work as always, keep it up, love the channel!!!
hehe scrrrtchhh!
I had the same thought, this was a hard one to keep the sound on for lol! Beautiful art, I love Rin's style so much :) but I think this was the only video I ever muted of hers XD

Alex: No don't scratch the paper again!
Rin: Hehe paper go scrrrtchhh
I CANT STOP WATCHING!!!!
Woahhh okay this is crazy!! Im in an ink and scratchboard class right now, and we start learning on Monday! Its also my first time so seeing this vid was a lovely coincidence :))
ahh! I feel like you could give me tips!
Try copper art with inks too
you are like a fairy godmother who cures artblock
trust me every time I watch you I always get an urge to draw
p.s.you are my favorite youtuber
The sound of the strokes are asmr.
Hehehe they are!
DK getting in a car accident ASMR
The other day I realized what I liked so much about waffles and her channel (apart from the great art obviously) and it was that Waffles isn’t afraid to show her mistakes and show that she is still learning. That’s really reassuring to me because a lot of art channels feel more “perfect” and it kinda bums me out, because I start thinking that they are on a whole other unreachable level. With waffles though, I feel like I’m learning and getting better, and helps to keep going. Thank you so much for everything, Rin. We love you
Rin, you are what I watch when I dont know what to draw. You inspire me to draw every day, and I love you, your art, your voice, and your vibe. It's so calming and when I'm not watching you, I listen to your videos as I draw. I hope you have an amazing day
That is so cool! I’ve only ever done a scratch board in a kit that already had outlines. I love the ombré soooo much!!
Rin: "Does it look like a tiger yet?"
*Me every time I start drawing something* XD
Waffles I seriously don’t think you know how much you’ve inspired/ impacted my art journey, I’m currently doing and drawing things I’ve never thought possible. Thank you so much 🧇
its seriously an honor to be a part of your art journey. 💜i'm so proud of what you've accomplished! you're amazing!
I wanna give Rin a huge hug right about now
i'd take it if we weren't in a global pandemic.

Something about Rins voice reminds me of the really nice aunt that calls you babes and helps you with personal problems. I love it

Your ability to create amazing art no matter what the art supply never ceases to amaze me
"Eh, doesn't do quite what it promises. It'd make a good political candidate" R I N , TELLING YOU STRAIGHT FACTS WHILE DOING STRATCH ART IN 2020 HAHA
welp. lol
It's so cool to see the drawing in black and white and THEN in color. It makes the color so much more striking
I did these when I was younger at a youth group night! we were waiting for our tie dye shirts to....finish, or whatever, so our youth group leader gave us this little boards except instead of white, it was rainbow when you erased. baby me was *very* impressed ngl
Am I the only one who just CAN NOT get over Rin’s funny voices and jokes while she’s drawing?
I love your videos Rin and it would make my day if you would heart this. 😊✨
Okay so even though u don't know anything about the art supply....u end up making a masterpiece......dat not fair 😂. Love you so so much Rin. Keep up ur amazing work❤️❤️❤️
A bit tired since I just uploaded a video today so having a new video from you is a blessing after a bit tiring day!💜🎨 Love from Philippines!🇵🇭
Am I the only one who runs to grab some paper and pencil everytime a DrawingWiffWaffles video drops? Somehow, her voice sparks the art muscle in my body. I just finished drawing a character. You inspire me to draw😁
I got goosebumps from the sound
I love waking up on Saturdays to some delicious waffles 😊
Can i just say, I love that your videos have subtitles, and not just the default ones. Great for not native speakers but also for ppl in the Deaf community ❤️🤟
😂 I’m trying to watch and draw with the video but my dog refuses. She wants to play NoW.
Sadie M :D thats how my pup always is. I rescued her four months ago. My sketchbook is barren. Oops.
rin is that one youtuber that I will NEVER unsubscribe from
Rename this art supply as “lottery scratching but art”
The amount of SHEAR PUNS in this video is amazing and you can’t convince me otherwise
I had these when I was little! You'd have a little wooden stick and when you would scratch it off it was rainbow underneath I was obsessed
You could also get ones that had a picture on it that you had to scratch off the ones I had were metallic under
I really love reading all the comments and learning that you can DIY this and also there are sooo many methods to go about making this. I had no idea. I’ve only ever used the ones marketed towards children where it’s already a rainbow gradient under the black material.
Me: Having an art block and no idea what to draw
Rin: Posts
Me: (gets a million ideas of what to do) TIME TO DRAW!
omg thats awesome! let me know what you end up drawing!

I ended up drawing a girl based on sunflowers! She’s more like a gardener than like a flower girl, but I really like how she’s turning out! Thanks for the inspiration ;)

The best sound ever totally
This is basically the scratch off stuff from when you were a kid. Anyone remember that?
Lol yeah I would get them as valentines or little activity books
Nope- haha... that’s what happens when you live in a rural area, but you’re lucky to have tried it!!!
I remember
Omg yeah
“This is so against everything I know.” Then you crushed it! I love the tiger 😍

Yeah, know nothing about scratching art that is not already precolored underneath. Fascinating to see Rin adapt so fast to her art supplies, some she has no experience with. Thanks for experimenting for us Rin! 🤗♥️👍🏾💯
I remember these were how I got into art ... the kids rainbow ones anyway 😂
I like how she gets straight to the point. 🥰

Oh, it's really cool to see a better quality version of these for original art! I've always enjoyed the engraving art kits, but they're generally pre-printed, and I've never seen any that came with correcting ink. I've made homemade variations with crayons when I was a kid.

I feel like my art has improved SO MUCH because of your videos, so yeah, thx so much drawingwiffwaffles!!
Also ive never been this early so, hi!
oh my god this gives me nostalgia from my childhood and those like rainbow scratch off things-
did anyone else just scratch of the whole thing and make a rainbow paper
I used to do this all the time when my sister was in the hospital for a burn I had to go with as they would be there all day and the man in the fun waiting room gave me a Christmas set of it as in it literally had santa Claus and a reindeer and you had to scratch it out with different techniques
Oh no... this is just like the chalk art video... The scratching noises literally send shivers up my spine 😭
Haha first youtube video I'm going to watch today. 😂😂💜
wahoo, i'm first! XP
Same
@@drawingwiffwaffles 💜😂
I used to love doing scratch art, but I never used one where you add the color at the end! I used to always use chalk transfer paper to transfer drawings to the scratch board and then I would scratch around the black parts and leave the chalk lines. You can wipe off the chalk lines with a slightly damp cloth.
hewo do you have any tips to draw semi realism? I've always wanted to draw in that style!
use references and just simplify some parts. thats like the most broken down answer but its true. other then that it takes time. stick with it.
@@drawingwiffwaffles ok thank you so much!
Your art is sooooo good, each time u draw something I immediately get inspired to draw even when I am having an art block- much love from a human across the world!!💜
Use this as a "watched all the way through and didn't skip anything" button
You are literally the best person to watch during this quarantine you never fail to brighten up my day! You are a big inspiration while I'm drawing
Thanks so much Rin!
I always say I'm going to draw along but then just end up watching all her videos I haven't watched yet....
When i was a kid, I used to do something like this with crayons. I would draw a rainbow, then layer it with a black crayon. When you scraped away the black crayon, you were left with a rainbow drawing. :D
Me: this is the first time I'm....* looks at comments*.....early? Nah nvm😂😂
i luv how i only have to wait like 13 seconds before you start unboxing instead of like 3 minutes! straight to the good content i love it and i love you, waffles 🧇
Hey Rin, love this vid! Whenever I’m looking for new art supplies to try, I always come to you. Hope you’re doing okay during this pandemic❤️❤️.
Edit: Could you possibly make a video regarding how you sketch eyes and the different shapes? Everyone like the comment so she can see! 😁
I just love the energy rin always give in her videos, and ofc the beautiful art👍🏻
Rin: “Now it looks like there’s a ton of blood on it mouth. I’m no that type of artist!”
Kasey: Well you know, I really like it!
this is so pretty! i love and admire how you can just look at another artists' work and just copy it for a study! you really inspire me and i hope you and your family are doing well!

Getting constant chills from the scratchin sound, watched the whole video still because rin is awesome❤️
last time i was this early i was actually able to go outside
I really needed this video today. My depression is rearing it's ugly head today, I had a bad PTSD flashback today, and just in general, today has SUCKED! So thanks for providing me with an escape today, Rin. You never fail to make me happy. ❤
I thought my notification bell was on ☹.
Me late ;^;
Yes new video! I hope everyone is having a great day so far!
Love your style ❤️ owo
I love drawing wiff waffles.... that’s all I have to say.❤️
I did this in art class in middle school I drew a bunny very fun and I still have it, since I know you struggle a lot with inverted colors try googling or editing a photo for reference that’s already inverted that way you can follow it more naturally and pick up on the little stuff over time! You got tons of skill n it’s nice watching you struggle because it encourages other artists to not give up and teaches that talent isn’t everything and even the best need to practice.
I had a teacher in middle school that had us make our own scratch paper by coloring the page with crayons and then painting over the crayon with india ink. Then you can scratch the india ink away and the crayon color was still left underneath. Fun to do, I can't imagine getting good at it though O_O
is it just me or does rin sound like an absolute sweetheart? i'd love to be friends with someone like her 🥺
Wahhhh! I'm 5 minutes late!
Where I'm from we call that early XP
@@drawingwiffwaffles As long as I'm in the same year, I'm still early-- lol
I love when you and other artist say " oh I don't know what I'm doing .. this looks crazy " and then it ends up looking fantastic .. like this for instance
Hello Waffles! You are such an inspiration to my friend and I! We love coloring your coloring pages with Ohuhus that you recommended to us! Any chance you will make more coloring pages? Love you!
It's easy to make your own: Use Oil pastels. First paint the color gradient, then black on top. Then you can scratch. It can be a little messy, so it's mainly for practice, but you never know, a masterpiece may appear!
This was reminding me of something- and then I realized like halfway through.
Did anyone else have those little scratch books, where it was solid black, but you’d take a wooden toothpick like thing and scratch away to reveal a rainbow fairy or something. Like I want to say, early 2010s is when those were a thing. I had them when I was like seven or smthn, and this just brought back memories that those were a thing. I can’t remember for the life of me what they were called, and I don’t know if anyone else had them. I don’t see them at all anymore, but that could also be because I’m not looking.
Does anyone have any ideas on what they were called? Did anyone else even have them as a kid?
"Engraving Art" is what the packaging says for one I have. I think I found it at Target or Michael's a few years ago. I bought some because I remembered doing them with my nieces when they were in grade school.
Catalie mew early 2010s?!? I used those all the time with I was a kid in the early 90s!!! I’m feeling really old now 😂
Amy C. Well I’m a teen, so it had to be early 2010s or late 2000s for me, but they were probably around much earlier than that.
Her work is so amazing.... She inspired me to open up my own TH-cam channel recently with anime art content in it.... But I don't have much people engaging yet so that I can start up making a fun community
