    Agreed,,some knives are overpriced but every time I buy a cheap knife that I like in pictures or video review it ends up in a junk drawer. With all of that money you spent on 2 or 3 cheap knives or more you could buy one amazing well built knife with premium materials and have pride & enjoyment in using, carrying & showing it.

    Wow! that RAT just hit the list...pretty high up on the list too, given the price point. I'd like to add a spyderco to my collection and I think that delica might be my introduction. Maybe the dragonfly, but probably the delica.
    Axis lock is addictive, I play with the knife all the time at work and sometimes I get weird looks lol.

    I've been collecting pocket knifes since I was a kid . I use to take them to school with me an got a couple confiscated by the principal XD .I've walked right into the police station with a knife in my pocket, I'm never with out one . I've got some great knifes that didn't cost me a fortune . I love them, I guess that makes me a weirdo . I guess some people will just never understand, there's so many good uses for a pocket knife . I use mine for a variety of things, it's saved me from having to find a different tool any time, and I fell naked with out one . Great video guys, thanks for posting .

    I have both the Delica IV and the Endura IV and I love them both. Endura goes into pocket when "out and about", Delica is my EDC, (street legal). Ritter MK I (S30V) rides in my first aid bag, just in case. Thanks for your efforts gentlemen.

    LOVE.my spyderco Endura and Delica Waves. Can't even bother with another style, I'm hooked (yikes) on the instant open wave design (and yes, you can take it out of your pocket without opening it, a couple days of carrying it and it becomes completely intuitive). I loved the endura, but it's a big knife with a very robust blade, it's not an aggressive looking design but maybe a little too attention grabbing for me. The Delica has been my edc for a year or so, and I can't see doing anything else, I'd love an Emerson but I'm not paying that much. The Endura and Delica wave are incredibly well made, insanely stain proof VG10 steel (I take them saltwater fishing, not even a spot on the blades), lightweight, and the price is much lower than anything else in its quality range.

    Another perpetual winner for Benchmade is the Osborne designed 940. As much as I love my Griptillian, it just can't compare to the smooth action of the 940. When I think of the axis lock system, I think of the 940. It just flies open effortlessly. The build quality is amazing, plus the thing just looks classy. It's plenty thin and comfortable to carry in pocket, and the blade shape just does it for me! I really love the reverse tanto style blade. There's plenty of S30V blade to cut with, and the tip is a perfect balance between fine detail work and strength. Plus the 940's popularity has also lead to many special runs with different colors, coatings, and blade steels. The only two downsides I feel the knife has are the handle and the cost. Like I said before, the handles give a classy, gentleman's carry type look to the knife. However, they don't provide a lot of traction. Some more aggressive gripping on top and bottom would go a long way for the ergos of this knife. Also, the 940 will run you anywhere from $170-$500+ depending on the model and features. Obviously the Gold Class knives are much more expensive and offer premium materials like carbon fiber handles and S90V steel, but most of your color options for this knife were limited production runs and are going to cost an arm and a leg if you can find them. I wish they would bring back some of those runs (i.e. nutnfancy 's gorgeous red 940 that is now impossible to find).

    I carried a Kershaw Kuro for quite a while, it's a smaller knife, probably about the size of the mini griptilian. I absolutely love it, and even though it's been replaced as my EDC knife by the CRKT Fossil, that little Kershaw will always be one of my favorite knives. Small, but feels great in the hand, lightweight, and a very smooth action.

    I grew up on a farm and a pocket knife was a tool that I always carried. I had a Camillus Boy Scout knife that I kept until my oldest daughter joined the Girl Scouts and I passed it on to her. She was in the Marine Corps and took the scout knife to Iraq, and now her son has it.
    That knife is so well made that I think it will last through great grandchildren.

    Instead of the Spyderco Endura at $70 why not consider the Byrd Cara Cara 2 (FRN handle) at about $25..? Still made by Spyderco and with reasonably decent steel (8cr13mov) - I bought one a few days ago and after oiling it a little the performance and feel are excellent. Oh, razor sharp out of the box too. I'm delighted with it. :)

    • @guitarplayabreh9445
      @guitarplayabreh9445 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      Steve Ball Hey, I have one question about the cara cara, does it rust fast? I saw a vid of a guy who carried one for two months(FRN) and it had tons of rust on the inside. I realize that I could just stonewash it or clean it regularly, which isn't too bad considering it's down to 20 bucks with free shipping on amazon. But I just want to know.

    • @sputumtube
      @sputumtube 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use mine almost exclusively indoors so it's never exposed to 'the elements' but I've heard the same thing about 8Cr13MoV. You've answered your own question really. Just clean it after a days use with an oily rag and a quick squirt of WD40 every week should give you years of use. At that price my friend, I'd just take a chance. Good luck, I doubt you'll regret your purchase.

    • @guitarplayabreh9445
      @guitarplayabreh9445 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      paul greenwood My question wasn't much about the blade steel, it was about the liners. I've heard lots of good stuff about 8cr13mov.

    • @jrh5808
      @jrh5808 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      trever gray there is a good chance the liners are 8cr13. So the rust resistance would be the same. However if it is a 2cr steel it may rust more. Stonewashing liners or a blade will only give rust a better surface to good on to. However Polishing blades and liners can help with preventing rust.

    • @mjcusack
      @mjcusack 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know this is a really old comment, but to answer your question it is simple - Cara Cara 2 is made in China and the Endura is made in Seki City, Japan, which is known for its impeccable craftsmanship with steel. That is where samurai swords were made. For an EDC blade you might be willing to sacrifice the quality to save some money, but if you ever need to rely on the blade to survive, which would you rather trust? Sometimes you need the blade for more than opening packages.
      Also how long is each knife going to last you? If you take care of your blades you will likely never need to replace the Endura, but you damn well will need to replace the Cara Cara 2. The expression, "You get what you pay for" rings true here.

    The EDC knife I've carried for the last couple of years is actually a very cheap Chinese folder; Sanremnu 763. Bought 5 of them for about $10 a piece and shortly thereafter it went out of production. It's completely ambidextrous (important for a leftie like me), has a nice blade lock, scales are what I believe made from glass fiber resin and the blade shaves hair quite easily. I haven't found anything better regardless of price during these years.

      Knife depot.com will allow you to engrave your knife. I'm sure there are others. Some really high quality and highly rated edc knives are Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Benchmade 551 Griptilian or mini Griptilian and the ZT 566. They're all Made in the USA and will not break the bank either. Also, the Kershaw Blur, Kershaw Leek, Kershaw Skyline, Buck Vantage Pro, Spyderco Manix 2 and ZT 350 are other really good edc knives. Can't go wrong with this gift idea.

    living in the UK I love my higonokami friction folder, it has everything a person would ever look for light daily carry: the unique reverse tanto blade with a slight belly is amazing for any cut you would ever make, the friction folding makes it legal in many strict places and allows the blade to be adjusted depending on the position, it geel like a feather in the pocket, plus it takes a wicked edge.

    My favorite EDC is without a doubt the Mcusta Tactility. Excellent steel and material, excellent construction. It's easy to open and close with one hand. It's slim, and has a low-rise pocket clip. The blade has very effective geometry, and the handle shape makes it comfortable to use. The knife closed would also serve as an effective non-lethal kubaton type of self defense tool. They come in a variety as well. I have the damascus model with quince burl wood handle.

    My most pocket carried EDC knives are Spyderco Delica ZDP-189, CRK small Sebenza Insingo CPM S-30V, Benchmade 940 154CM (green aluminum handles, I think one of the first production runs), Victorinox Compact (with custom titanium scales), sometimes an Opinel n°7. The above knives generally pair with a 58mm Victorinox Manager with a pressurized ballpoint pen that I always carry in my jeans watch pocket.
    For more substantial uses: Spyderco Paramilitary 2 CPM S-30V, CRK Large Sebenza 21 CPM S-35V, and Spyderco Endura VG-10.
    For tough use, as when I volunteer as the first responder with the local K9 search and rescue unit, and for survival situations, I carry my Extrema Ratio RAO 1; a folder that can be secured opened as a fixed blade.
    Out of my collection of more than 50 knives, the above are the most carried.
    By the way, in Italy, where I live, it is illegal to carry any knife regardless of the size, if not for a justified purpose (as trekking, camping, outdoor activities, etc.). I'm always breaking the law by carrying my Manager SAK even downtown 😱.

Before getting the endura 4 I carried one for over 2 years and beat the crap out of it at work, in the woods, and around the farm. Very fast opening, easy to get scary sharp, and one of the few knives in that price range that would take 2 years worth of what I put my knives through. Had lots of kershaws etc in that price range and I never get more than 6-8 months out of them

    Wish I had the money to put into a nice pocket knife like these, but anything over $20 and I'm just too afraid of breaking it. I abuse the heck out of my knives, which is why I've been carrying the lowly Milwaukee Fastback Drop Point (48-22-1990) for over a year. One heck of a knife that I'm not afraid to really abuse and it takes everything I've thrown at it. Prying, digging, drops, dirt, mud, rain, you name it. It deploys quickly and reliably with one hand, which is a must for my knife, and the joint is as solid today as it was the day I bought it. I think some of the workhorse knives get overlooked because they (DEFINITELY) lack that sexy aesthetic, but I love mine.
    Great vid.

      Jake_Has_A_Life I lived in Texas right up until last December. Legality is one of the last factors I consider when deciding on a knife. Luckily I still live in a state that also has pretty good knife laws, so I don't HAVE to take it into consideration unless I'm getting something extreme.

      Comrade Max Good recommendation! I appreciate it.
      After looking at it, the Cara Cara 2 looks like it has a spine lock (is that what it's called?). I prefer liner locks that I can work with one hand.

    • @minmax5
      @minmax5 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Budsygus Oh, also you can close it one handed if you push the spine lock and press the blunt side of the blade against a hard-ish surface. But that's not particularly elegant.

    I don't understand the obsession with what are really just ridiculously overpriced penknives.
    If you want a folder, a dirt cheap Opinel or Svord Peasant knife, or even any one of the Victorinox Swiss Army Knives as a multitool, will do fine, and are better than most of the EDC and "tactical" bling costing five or ten times as much, or even more.
    For anything more serious than your Opinel was designed for, fixed blade is the way to go:
    Real tactical knives(including really small SOE concealment knives) of two World Wars and numerous smaller conflicts were fixed blade for a reason: instant deployment during massive adrenaline dump, when gross motor movement takes over.
    Real bushcraft and survival knives are also fixed blade.
    Folders are slower, more fumble prone, weaker, by design. Less safe doing things better done by a fixed blade. Nice for sharpening your goose quill(and more modern domestic/small tasks), hence "penknife".
    A steel clip bolted onto the knife ruins the feel in your hand. I suppose the best thing about such a gimmick is that it is easy to remove.
    Just an ol' codger's opinion of course:).

    • @Lycosa
      @Lycosa 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree that Opinel+SAK is great. Victorinox. SAK is love is life, BUT... SpyderCo Delica 4 I could buy..... 100-150€ in my country. Very solid good quality knife.

    • @jgreystoke
      @jgreystoke 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Full flat grind Delica sounds great. I've carried a TDI in various versions(std, large, ankle, in the pocket) for years. The first thing I do is put the bolt-on accessories in a drawer. That leaves you with something flatter and lighter in your pocket. The first thing I do with a folder is remove the pocket clip:). I'm really old-fashioned like that, even for an old fart:).

    • @whogavehimafork
      @whogavehimafork 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      j greystoke I can agree with you folks a little but man yall are picky about pocket clips. I'm 20, been using pocket knives since I was about 10 at least, never once sat there and thought to myself "man...I hate pocket clips." Of course that's your preference and if it bothers you I won't judge you at all, I've just never once thought about that.
      That said, I prefer mid-range knives. You know probably between $30-40. It ought to be made well enough to last a good while but cheap enough that you won't be heartbroken if you lose it. Anything that requires a more substantial knife you should invest in a good fixed blade. My dad gave me a Benchmade Nimravus not too long ago. Fantastic fixed blade but definitely not something I would buy myself because of the price.

    I loved your comment on desk jobs. I'm no outdoorsman by any means, but I really enjoy blades just for their beauty and ergonomics. The feel of them and the function. I get light EDC use out of them at best. I spend the majority of my days behind one desk or another, and I would say the number one thing I do with any knife is open and close it -- a lot.
    One thing I've been kind of looking out for when browsing knives is ... "what looks like it would be an incredible amount of fun to just open and close..." and I also settled on the axis-locks. Just ordered a mini-grip (on the way still). Couldn't help but laugh at your comments on it, as that's my take exactly.

  • @EssenceofPureFlavor
    @EssenceofPureFlavor 11 ปีที่แล้ว

    Get the mini. Full-size griptilian isn't huge, but you can definitely notice it. And like they said in the video, you can even customize it in the colors you want, with the blade shape you want, satin or black finish, several blade steel options, etc. If you just want a good working knife to carry around with you, there aren't a lot of better choices for the money.

    I love the knives shown as well as my new carson design crt, M16-01s knife.. Handles are shaped and contoured in the same confident grip M16 style, but are crafted of a retro flavored stainless steel. Handles are all finished in a classic black oxide finish. These folders are available in several blade style options including cutting edge configurations, each with their own user advantages to offer. Blades also feature the Carson Flipper for quick and convenient blade actuation-and the flipper doubles as an effective blade guard in the open position. Blade lock up is secured through the traditional frame lock mechanism all I can say is what a knife.
    The M16-SS EDC Series is a straight up, "no frills" every day carry folder design that kicks butt in pure performance and value.

    The part at the start is so true I retired my Para 2 after 4 months of carry 1 because the G10 was wearing through my pocket and 2 it put people off when I used it due to its size so I was at Cabelas recently and I made the mistake of going to the knife area... I love Benchmade my first quality knife was a Mini Barrage but the steel wasn't perfect for me so I saw this lil knife with gorgeous G10 scales and a really nice blade shape and it just pushed all my good spots... with a $149 price tag being the only downside but after handling it for a bit and walking around for about 30min I walked back up and asked If I could have it turns out it was the last Benchmade North Fork that they had in stock It opens so smooth and it has a great S30V blade and it's super comfortable in hand BUT the important part to this lengthy story is the fact it may only be a little shorter that the Para 2 but it looks smaller and it seems to have been received a lot better.
