    Dear Loren , this is Dilek - Director of Sales & Marketing at Nokta. I personally wanted to thank you for this GREAT and educational video on behalf of myself and my company! This is exactly what we are trying to tell people and educate them on as well. All these detectors are good and spending 2 or 3 times more on a detector does not get you that extra performance you expect to get. If a feature of a detector is worth the price difference for a consumer, we highly respect that but what we fight for is exactly what you are saying in your video. And I will refer people to this video in my live on Facebook today quoting a few of the things you said and I hope you don't mind that! (And excuse me in advance if I do pronounce the last name wrong)

      Hi Dilek, big fan of yours and Nokta Makro. I have recommended the Simplex to tons of people new to detecting. I have a friend who swears by it and wields it quite well too. I got a chance to swing the Legend several times and was very impressed. Love the fact that you guys update and add features so quickly while other companies takes months and months. Definitely feel free to quote me on anything. I hope all is well in Turkey given the recent events.

      Live videos of the X-Terra Pro show coins reading as iron in all frequencies, air tests from other videos show its limitations of depth are approximately 11 to 12 inches even with the 12 inch coil, but for people at the beach it's still a strong contender. Using old school Whites machines I found coins from the mid-1700s at no deeper than 9 to 10 inches, so target range depth is not the most important issue for me as a Nokta Simplex and Qwest Q10 Pro user, it's that casino slot machine sound of the Minelab and serious processing delay!. Notice the sounds are heard only after the coil has passed over the target. What I love about the Nokta Simplex is the old school threshold that enables you to find the deepest targets. Nokta plans to update the frequency of the Simplex from 12 to 15 MHz which will totally destroy its depth making the Minelab the leader of the pack, so sad. Any thoughts?

    Thank you Loren for another, sane, well thought out video of the actual situation with the Equinox models, Manticore, Deus 2 and the Legend. Seven detectors that can pretty much do well in almost any detecting situation. The only big variable is the knowledge and experience of the operator along with having targets to detect. I don't know much about the Manticore, but I own and regularly use the Equinox 800, 900, Deus 2 and the Legend. They are fantastic detectors that usually tell me what I need to know as long as I get them over a target. There is no best among those detectors. They all have slight differences and slight strengths and weakness between them.

      Jeff,
      I'm sorry to bother you... I already left my own comment, and also replied to someone else's comment. This is my 3rd activity here in this video's thread. I'm probably aggravating... Sorry Loren!!! (Hopefully the additional comments add to the algorithm, and actually helps you!).
      Jeff, You said that you own the Equinox 800, 900 and The Legend. You didn't argue with Loren, so you must agree....
      I'm sure all of your machines hit all of the same targets out in the wild, right?
      I was going to buy The Legend Pro Pack because the Equinox 900 is about $400 more. I really can't afford $1100 right now. The Legend Pro Pack (2 coils and headphones) is right around $700. That seemed like the one to get.
      But then I found the Minelab Vanquish 540 Pro Pack. It's $100 less and comes with 2 coils and a Pro Find 35 Pinpointer for $600!!!
      It has multi-frequencies, DD coils, Bluetooth and USES AA BATTERIES!!! It comes with 4 - rechargeable lithium batteries, but any AA batteries will work!!!
      Do you feel the same as Loren? Will the Vanquish 540 find all of the same targets out in the wild as your Legend, 800 and 900??? I'm sure you'd be able to find some deeper targets with the 900 probably...
      I can't find any honest videos about the Vanquish series vs The Legend, vs "save a few more $ and wait until you can afford the Equinox 900" or whatever.
      I'm not asking you or Loren "Which is the best?" All I'm asking is, Can the Vanquish 540 hang with the big boys or not? I like the idea of the AA batteries, but have no problem buying the Legend, or even shooting for the 800 or waiting a little longer for the 900.
      If this isn't the place, please send a message to me. I use Google's mail service, and the first part is eldie3d. Thanks Jeff!... and Loren!

      @@eldie3d sorry I didn’t reply earlier. I just missed your questions somehow.
      I think you made a good decision buying a Legend. No, I do not think that each of these detectors will hit all of the exact same targets. They each have their strengths and weaknesses and the amount of variables for target scenarios is basically infinite. However, if they all are using the same sized coils with very similar settings while detecting coin sized objects, and the operator knows what they are doing there is very little difference in their abilities to detect those targets at the same depths. That is not the case for the Vanquish models. They are outstanding entry level detectors but they do not have the iron handling, speed, adjustability, versatility and waterproofing of those other detectors.

    Loren, you have been the most transparent person regarding the latest brands and models. Not everyone has taken the time to test all the settings of their machine in different terrain situations to say, this is better than that. Every product has its positive points, and this also needs to be highlighted, but in the sense of amplifying something that the models were not made for due to factory default, speaking of coil formats and dimensions. I have tried to do the same as you did, in various forums, in comments and videos of well-known people on TH-cam that I will not mention. After my comment explaining what they did to raise the bar for the detector they advocate in the video, my comments were deleted, and sometimes they even deleted the videos when the cases were blatant. I won't go on any longer, I congratulate you on the excellent work and dignity of exposing the truth about the "best detector." Regards.

    I general I think you’re right. I’ve tried same test in the wild with D2/Legend/ML and mostly all the time they all hit the targets. We did have a situation at a fav spot of ours where we were digging really deep Civil War bullets and noticed our friend, who was using the equinox, could not hear one of the bullet signals that we were barely hearing with the D2 . Keep in mind he was using the 11 inch coil on the equinox and we were using the 9 inch coil on the D2. There were probably 8 to 10 bullets that day that he just could not hear with his machine, even after maxing everything out in the settings. Additional noise , re-balancing, etc. Interesting. However, as you know, there are more variables. Basically what I found out is when you try to test these machines this closely you will end up driving yourself nuts😂 enjoy your input👌🏼

A ton of videos on Deus 2 but nobody discusses you have to charge the coil or the cost. Sometimes, it's just easy to stay in the same ecosystem. You bring up some interesting points! I believe that 10 percent of detectorists dig up 90 percent of the good finds. They use the higher end machines to their advantage because they understand how to use them better than others - by watching videos like yours, of course. Most guys should just buy a cheap reliable detector and enjoy their time outside. I'm sure dealers don't want to hear this but judging by the groups I've joined on FB and videos on watched YT most guys don't know what they are doing and should not buy an expensive detector. Excellent video! I have been detecting for 25 years, started with a simple Tesoro, it had one sound, some dials, no screen! It forced me to learn the basics, and I found many good finds with it! My next detector upgrade was a whites spectra v3i, it was an education in how a detector thinks, the processes it runs, and how different frequencies respond to different metals. It also communicated many great finds to me. I now have a Deus2 and the equinox 900. Both are amazing! I agree that neither one is better than the other, they communicate differently, but both produce the same results in all but a few certain circumstances. They are in my opinion, a very noticeable improvement of the machines of 10-15 yrs ago, both in adjustability to suit conditions, and accurate ID at depth. I have not had the good fortune to try the nokkta or the manticore, id assume they are just as good. I will be busy for the next 10 yrs or so swinging these two, or until the next major leap in technology provides another very noticeable improvement! Keep the great videos coming!

    Your right about most top end detectors.
    The machines that are out today and the ones that are coming are a give and take on a lot of settings. You have to take a bit to give a bit here and there.
    I have thought that VLF machines have pretty much got to there limits and the only thing that people want when they buy something new is the look.
    As for newer machines and tests.
    Its important to have the settings of the machines on test as close to each other as possible. They must have the same size coils and if using them as close to the same standard headphones.
    They must have the same or as close as possible recovery speeds , if not it will effect depth and its the same for sensitivity and ground balance/ noise cancelling.
    I am biased .
    I use Minelab's a lot on my beaches but it doesn't mean no other machine is capable of finding the targets i fin. Everyone has a favourite and everyone has a budget.
    On land i tend to use the Deus 11. Mainly for lightness and it does also have the square tones which sound like Minelab's which are the ones i started out with in 2003.
    On the beach i used to use FBS machines and the X.Terra. They are quick for target i.d. but slower on recovery speed.
    Now i use the Nox 800 ( which is a risky machine in the water but finds Silver well and the recovery is very good)
    I have bought the 900 and that will eventually replace the 800 and be my main machine for the water use ( will explain in a bit).
    I still have the E.Trac, but thats more in reserve now even though its still my most successful machine and my favourite for target info. Its just not so good on Iron and the weight is hard to handle now.
    And i have the Legend Pro. Last year i found 3 nice Gold rings and 22 Silver rings with it.
    The reason is will use the Nox 900 in the water instead of the Legend? Apart from the weight difference which is minor, I feel the headphones on the Nox are better for sound. I think the Legend headphones let the machine down a bit and it seems to me that the machine picks out targets better with its own speaker better than the headphones which are quieter too me.
    When the new 1.11 update is out and not a beta i will update from 1.09 and will use the Legend again.
    The Legend is a sturdy machine and way good enough for almost all areas i search. I just have favourites for different areas of beaches and land.
    Not all machines will do everything every time. Close but not quite the full Cuban!
    As for the Manticore?
    I am not going to buy it or certainly not for some time. Its not a complete machine i feel. Its quite unstable on many places going by videos i have seen. It has unstable numbers , though so does the 900. Though it gives a good idea of the target for £1799 the Manticore should be a lot better.
    The Manticore has sensitivity to 35 but it wont go that high in many places and thats been said on some video's , even the 900 is a bit scratchy on some sites at 25 or more. I haven't seen any real evidence that it is deeper than any other top end machine. I might? be a bit deeper but you might miss those targets as they could be spitty and you might think trash or false signal.
    It might be clearer on signals at the same depths other machines can go too? But that depends if you can use the sensitivity on your ground.
    At the moment it looks to me that all your getting for the extra £700 for a Manticore above the 900 is the Target Trace. Its not bad and i wish the E.Trac had it but its not worth the £700 above a 900 yet. Maybe when the Manticore has had its foible's ironed out?
    I'm just not sure i need it too. Maybe one day when i need a new machine but then XP or Nokta or who ever might make something better and for less money?
    This year i will use the 800/900 and the Legend on my beaches. The 900 in the water out of season and the 800 too here and there and the Legend in the late Spring too early Autumn for the newer finds that are not as deep. (headphones)!
    If i didn't have the wind and the people getting in the way i would not use the phones on the Legend. I wish i could find a better set of wireless phones for the Legend but not found them yet.
    Anyway thats how i feel.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have been enjoying the Manticore, at least based on the few times I have had a chance to use it (darn winter is back!). But I do really liked the fewer TIDs that the Equinox 800 had. I just felt it was easier to remember 40 potential bins of targets, than 100 of them. The more TIDs just means any given target has more TID splatter, usually. Like on the Equinox 800 I can tell you exactly what targets a 16 could be or a 12. But on the XP Deus II, if you ask me, what are the potential targets that could display an 87, well it couldn't list anything specific. Fewer mental bins to categorize targets has an advantage, but everybody seems to think more TIDs is better. Like why not make it 0 through 1000 then, and each potential TID becomes totally meaningless and becomes a range, as opposed to a single number.

      I am not familiar with the soil type in Georgia / South Carolina. The type of soil / amount of soil mineralization is a significant factor when choosing a detector. It could be helpful to ask an experienced detectorist in your area what types of soil you might encounter. In general higher frequencies will hit most gold jewelry targets a bit better. An Simultaneous Multi-Frequency detector handles most soil types very well and is also well suited for hitting small gold jewelry targets, but are typically more pricey. The Nokta Score / Double Score seems to be a good performing SMF detector at a great price. Hope this helps a bit!

I have seen many videos suggesting the Deus is the best and some that show the impressive abilities of the Manticore. Thank you for a sane review! Unfortunately there is no Consumers Reports on detectors. There are lots of good detectors, at all the price ranges that will do a great job. Much depends on the type of hunting you plan to do, your environment(s) and your pocketbook. Consider how a detector holds up during use, since no one wants something that breaks easily. Leaking/waterproofing is a consideration for those hunt in water. Weight might be a factor and the length (tall folk). The cost of coils is a factor, as you probably need both smaller or bigger ones. Some people seem to jump to new machines without ever learning to work with the one they have.

    Thanks for the great video. I think what you are saying today regarding the top of the line detectors is absolutely true. I checked a lot of signals last year with my detector buddy and only one signal I can remember that I could hear with my Nokta Anfibio that my friend could not hear with his Equinox 600. It turned out to be a gold bracelet. I remember he was using Park mode low discrimination while I was using low discrimination. Before I dug the target ( I didn’t know it was gold ) he fiddled around with different settings and finally got his NOX to hear it relatively clearly. So you do have to know your machine and settings for what you are searching for. I think years ago, especially around 1990 Minelab did have an advantage over the top selling brands with the multi frequency machines, but there was a trade off because their detectors were kind of heavy and little more difficult to learn.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, settings can definitely make a difference. Also I have seen some people swing at the target from different directions / different orientation which can have a big affect on whether a target can be hit.

    Thank you for your sensible and honest video. I used my White's MXT for years and years in the low desert of SW Arizona when I wintered there, and up in the forests of British Columbia in the summer time. A couple of years ago I retired that machine and all the coils I have for it and bought an XP ORX with the eliptical coil. I am almost 70 and find the ORX so much lighter and easier for me to use. I also love its range of frequencies and programs. Good for desert, forest or city park, an absolutly great machine. Lately I have been wondering if I am missing anything with a mono frequency machine and have been looking at the XP Deus ii. Not sure if I will upgrade to a multi frequency machine or not, or even if it will the Deus ii, it is pricy and there is very little coil selection at this time. Thanks again, you have confirmed what I suspected.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Simultaneous multifrequency detectors can produce noticeable performance advantages in difficult ground in terms of depth and target ID. It's possible your ground in SW Arizona is that type of ground which could see noticeable performance advantages with an SMF detector. I couldn't say for sure because ground can vary significantly depending on location. But assuming the ground conditions are not a factor, the ORX is a great detector and likely wouldn't be missing things.

    I agree. The biggest factors for me are the weight of the detector, its sensitivity to EMI and how effective EMI cancelling is!
    Also a machine that works on the beach is essential. The D2 is light but very sensitive to EMI and can be unusable near power lines and buildings it also has only 7 micro frequency shifts which are not enough.
    It depends on soil conditions as well.
    With no EMI in the wild I would expect similar results with the top machines. But in difficult conditions one machine may be better than the others.
    The way forward is to make detectors much lighter. So rather than add many more features designing detectors to be lighter in weight would be what most detectorists actually need. Lightness in weight reduces fatigue and allows a faster swing speed.
    The best test is to detect with different machines then compare finds after 6 months.

    love the videos, keep them coming. I wish I could have filmed a few targets the other night, but I don't do video really. My buddy runs a Equinox 800 and I'm running the Manticore, he had dug two wheat penny's in a whole and the depth was already at about 12'' deep in the hole. He asked me to come over and swing to see if there was anything more in the hole... He was getting only an iron signal as there was iron also in the hole, I swung over the hole and picked up one deeper in the hole. Yes I had an iron signal also but it was showing a wheat in there with the iron. Twice this happened on this field, I also own the 800 and love it but this is the first time its been clear for one over the other... But I also totally agree that other than the fact I can move a bit faster with manticore there is little difference I can tell over the depth in which I can truly hit targets...if it is anything it is more the fact that it seems to be able to pick silver out of iron better than the Nox 800.

    All these detectors are pretty much neck-in-neck for general detecting. Features, ergonomics, and brand loyalty are the main drivers for potential customers. This doesn't apply to gold nugget hunting. I wasn't impressed with the Legend's performance in gold country last year with the v1.09, and the EQ800 in videos didn't do exceptionally well on nuggets either. I'm looking forward to going back there with the Legend with the V1.11 update and my new EQ900 to test gold nuggets in the wild. My current go-to VLF gold machines are the Deus 1, Gold Kruzer, GMT, and the Fisher Gold Bug II. It's interesting that Brass Medic brings up the CTX as a gold nugget machine. I'd never even heard anyone else ever mention that possibility. I think that's a lost marketing opportunity for Minelab.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I actually think small nugget detecting might be where some of the differences are more noticeable, but if that is what you are primarily seeking, there are some more niche detectors for nugget hunting that I would consider. However, it should be noted, that is just what I have been able to glean, there are no nuggets to be found in my location so I have no actual experience in that regards.

  • @drinkely8235

    I think the reason someone like myself ( noob to detecting ) watches videos in regard to functionality is to discern IF their is a clear advantage from one detector to another. I’m about to pull the trigger on a detector in 1-2 days and my head is spinning because one person says legend , one person says eq 900 etc. etc. and as a guy that cares about quality and functionality along with my money, i want what’s best. With that said my price range is legend to eq 900. I can’t get a straight answer and apparently their is NOT a straight answer. This vid helped me BUT i still can’t decide between legend and eq 900. I don’t want to spend money i don’t need to however if the differences are so slight that a noob for sure would not recognize. However i have noticed chatter differences between these two detectors. In my very limited knowledge ( never swung a detector in my life ) only these vids bring light to this chatter i speak of. I would prefer a stable machine over one that chirps over a ton of trash in the ground. Help please !

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว

      There is no wrong choice between the Legend and the Equinox 900. Both are very good machines, and will likely produce similar chatter in trash and high EMI locations. The Legend does have a stabilizer setting that you can turn up for ultra stable detecting if that is your preference (though doing so on any machine comes at a cost when searching in environments polluted with iron).
      Make sure you include a hand held pinpointer and shovel / findings pouch in your budget. Also something to consider is that the Legend is cheaper and would allow you to buy these essential accessories, or even an extra search coil if you already have those.
      If you are looking to save money, the Equinox 700 is also an option, especially if you have no plans to search for tiny gold nuggets (the lack of goldfield mode is the only meaningful difference between the 700 and 900). If you aren't in the right geological location, there is likely no gold nuggets to be found anyway.

    A problem with a test garden where you have objects buried: The first Metal Detector that you test will “charge” the metals with its electro magnetic pulsess, so the next Metal Detector you test over the same objects will have a different situation because off the first tested Metal Detector. Could this be a problem or am I misunderstanding the physics?

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is a great question! Fortunately the eddy currents induced in the buried objects dissipate almost instantly when the time alternating magnetic field of a detector is removed. So there won't be any residual effects in a test garden. The magnetic field / current induced is rather weak and will have no impact on the object. If the object was exposed to a much, much stronger magnetic field it could re-align the electrons making the object more readily permeable to a magnetic field. E.g. when you rub a magnet against an object like a nail, and then the nail becomes a magnet.

    The top-tier detectors are top-tier because their capabilities and underlying technologies are convergent. Differences are there but go unnoticed because the haphazard testing is too grossly performed. A well-designed test would reveal variations in how the post-processed signal is presented audibly and visually to the user. Fringe targets appear ferrous, severely averaged into the soil matrix, or may appear nonferrous when the target is ferrous. The detector's two transmit frequencies might be well suited for stimulating deep weak conductors that another detector, or penetrate a bit deeper in mineralized soil, but not be inherently as capable of separating iron and nonferrous side-by-side. The minor difference is there, but the rough-shod testing I've seen is too uncontrolled. There are so many other variables left unchecked that even the assumptions on performance hold little merit. Too often, the testing appears purposefully flawed to support individual biases, not to mention all too often exposing a general ignorance of suitable detector settings. Yet, warts and all, it's all anyone has to judge relative performance.
    I'd propose a test garden with buried targets of unknown depth, type, or location in various soil fill undetectable from the surface (from mild soil to highly mineralized, to damp course salt-laden soil, some soil compacted others loamier, some iron contaminated and some inert) with no EMI present. Each detectorist passes through alone, making adjustments in whatever way they think is best. Each tester records where (on a grid reference) and what they think the detector is finding. Each participant records whether the target(s) are ferrous or nonferrous (possibly conjoined ferrous/nonferrous, double or single targets, on-edge or flat), the expected depth, and the target ID. The final hit, miss, false alarm stats (and correct rejection) would become the basis for compiling the detection accuracy. This is only after a statistically representative number of each detector type with different users has run the gauntlet; only then can a legitimate scientific consensus form on the capability of each detector. That would be a challenge, but it would be enormous fun to build and do, and the results would be shocking.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, I totally agree. Also the smaller the margins of difference between the detectors demands better, more accurate tests to extract those differences. Most tests I see are sloppy and haphazardly executed.

      I actually don't own a Legend, but I got to swing somebody elses a handful of times. A buddy swapped me his Legend for his Deus II, and we compared a handful of signals. I was very impressed with the Legend, felt sturdy (which I really like), and over that small sample size, each machine hit all the targets quite well.

    I used to have a permission on a local farm,and I found some nice finds including several silver Celtic units and hammer coins a nice vesica seal and a massive finger ring that proved to be a merchants ring that would have been guided and worn over a gloved hand. Also found a Celtic quarter stater. Was over the moon with that lol. I think as detectorists we are always looking for the holy grail. If I had a more expensive machine I would find more. Don’t think in reality it works like that it could mean you missed something you have to be over it to find it. I am looking for a beach detector as I have been out of metal detecting for maybe 6 or 7 years due to life getting in the way, I still have the deus 1 but I am looking at a multi frequency machine for the beach as I visit friends on the south coast.and am impressed with the legend. So I think I am going with the legend maybe the pro pack so I have the little sniper coil.

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  ปีที่แล้ว

      I have my biases too, personally I am not a fan of the audio mode on the Simplex, I like more musical tones which means I have a bias towards Minelab products. When I use the D2, I prefer to use the square tones as well, the more musical the better for my ear. I don't like the grindy, whiney sounds of PWN style audio. I also think there are some real advantages to having SMF on a detector, but honestly for the price the Simplex is pretty top notch.

    Just answer one question....
    You mentioned the Deus 2, the Manticore, Equinox and a friend's Simplex.
    You didn't mention the Minelab Vanquish - probably because you've never experienced it....
    But considering everything you said, all of the 'name brand' metal detectors should be able to hit the same targets out in the wild.
    The Vanquish series is multi-frequency and has the DD coils. The 440 and 540 even have Bluetooth. Shouldn't the Vanquish 540 be able to find all of the same targets out in the wild?
    I did watch a video about and old Aussie that calls himself a Bush Kid or something. He had a video titled "Equinox 900 vs The Legend" (or something like that). He didn't show any of the girl/Legend. He only showed his findings with the Nox 900. He was hitting targets 12" to 15" deep.
    If someone is looking for depth, then there is a BIG difference between which metal detector is best, right?
    I'm just asking... or, I'm just saying...
    I had an old Bounty Hunter single frequency (basically a kids toy). I used it on construction sites to find excessive nails and screws that fell to the ground. That cheap piece of crap actually found a few small treasures. It sparked my interest in getting a professional metal detector (professional beginner), like a Vanquish, Simplex or Ace.
    In my shopping for an entry-level detector that's not crap, I learned about multi-frequencies and DD coils. So I've increased my budget a little. The Simplex went to Legend and Go-Find went to Vanquish.
    Now I'm wondering if I should step up a little further... I can't afford the Manticore. I doubt I can afford the Equinox 900...
    I'm still at the Legend, the vanquish, the Equinox 800 and maybe... just maybe the Equinox 900...
    I'm going to be on the Mississippi Gulf Coast beach, I'm going to be in parks, I'm going to be on old civil war sights... Basically, I'm going to be everywhere... I'm going to be by the Lake Pontchartrain (brackish water), on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, and everywhere in between. I'll even be out in fields and out in a Bonnet Carre Spillway. I live in New Orleans. I'm sure some beach finds are going to be deep, and I'm sure some civil war relics are going to be deep....
    Considering your video I just watched... You said they all will hit the same targets in the wild... But I'm sure they not all going to hit 12 to 15 in deep...
    Do you still have no opinion if someone was to ask, which one should I buy?
    If you can answer this, I will become a subscriber with all notifications on! I'm a man of my word and I promise you!
    I think you're going to say...
    "The Vanquish 540 WILL find all the same targets, but the deeper you want to detect, the more money you have to spend".
    Therefore the Equinox 900. (It's $1100 with 2 coils). If depth isn't an issue, do you think the Vanquish 540 could hang with the Legend?
    Thanks!!!

    • @LorenLemcke
      @LorenLemcke  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi, based on what you said, I'd actually recommend The Legend over the Vanquish 540. While their performance is likely very similar, The Legend has an internal rechargeable battery which is way better than having rechargeable AAs. Also you said you might do some beach hunting, The Legend is waterproof while the Vanquish 540 is not. In terms of general performance, they are likely very similar, though I would give the edge to The Legend in terms of versatility: can switch to single frequency, has different SMF weightings, and has depth-audio which is good for finding deep targets in isolation (e.g. on the beach). I didn't include The Vanquish series in my discussion because, while they have good performance for the value, the general feature set is lacking compared to other similarly priced detectors, as of present.
      It's true that in general the higher tier detectors are deeper, and cost more, they actually aren't that much deeper than some of the midrange offerings, e.g. the Vanquish series. You really pay a lot of extra dollars for those few extra centimeters. Even the Manticore, when set at commensurate recovery speeds, is only marginally deeper than The Legend and the XP Deus 2, but depth is a blurry metric. E.g. if the Manticore gave a somewhat clear tone on an ultra deep target, then maybe the XP Deus 2 / Legend would still hit it, but would give a much more choppy tone. Both could still be dug, but one machine is hitting it just a bit better might do a better job at catching your attention and convincing you a deep target is present and its not just background noise.
      I hope that helps out!

      I originally thought, "Loren said they're all the same, and all find the same targets, so just get the Vanquish 540, save some money and go do some treasure hunting".
      But from your reply above - and because you didn't include it in your videos list, now I'm thinking the Vanquish is not really in the same class as the others. I'm now thinking the Vanquish is either a high-tech expensive toy, or a basic bottom-of-the-line cheap beginner detector for a new part-time hobbyist looking to get into detecting for the first time, and wants to try it out before spending a lot of money.
      I used to MD a lot! But was forced to stop in 2005 when Hurricane Katrina wiped out everything my wife and I had.
      It took us about 8 years to rebuild. We were back to being pretty stable, and I was planning to purchase another MD around 2013 to 2014 - when my wife got sick. It became terminal and I stayed by her bedside the 5 months trying to make every moment count. She passed in May of 2015. We didn't have life insurance and we were way behind and I didn't work 5 months - or maybe a little longer... Anyway, I lost everything and became homeless. My first night in the homeless shelter, someone stole my bag and I no longer had an ID and couldn't stay in a shelter anymore. I was on the streets of New Orleans. While somewhere on the streets of New Orleans, the retirement home couldn't find me to tell me that my mother was sick and not going to make it. My mom passed in 2016 without me seeing her for the last time, telling her I love her, telling her goodbye, and I missed her funeral services. In 2017 I was working odd jobs trying to get back on my feet and somebody robbed me and shot me in the chest. The 9 mm hollow point went downwards through my intestines fraction my pelvic bone and into my back side waistline. The bullet destroyed my intestines and I had a colostomy bag. I had a second surgery about 6 months later to reverse the ostomy. The Staples didn't hold, the incision reopened and I could put my four fingers down into my abdomen - I could see my intestines. For most part of 2018, I had to wear a wound vac. A thin membrane grew over the opening... Eventually, my intestines stretched them thin membrane pushed through and caused a 12 cm stage two incisional hernia. In October of 2019 I had to have a third major surgery to repair the hernia. I recovered from the gunshot and all three major surgeries on a hard steel park bench - sometimes in the intense sweat-drenching heat and sometimes in the freezing-cold rain. Recovering from getting shot and three major abdominal surgeries where the incision was from chest to pubic area was tough to recover from - especially with no food, no fresh water, no clean bandages or other medical supplies and no money! It took me 5 months to recover from that last surgery in October of 2019.
      5 months from October of 2019 brought me to March of 2020 -Right when the COVID-19 pandemic started. It was the pandemic that pretty much saved my life. Every man has his breaking point, and I reached mine with the colostomy bag... And suffered even more after it! The reversal was awesome, but the hernia made me look like I was pregnant for 5 or 6 different sized boulders. A friend said it looked like I was giving birth to an alien like in the movie Alien, and a little creature's head was trying to push out.
      Like I said, it was the pandemic that saved my life - from my breaking point. The New Orleans government put all of the homeless people and hotels and motels. I now had an address and used it wisely. I filed for food stamps, Medicaid, pandemic unemployment, and the two stimulus checks. Most other homeless people that were taken off the streets didn't do that much - and the ones that did use the money for drugs and alcohol. I use the money wisely! I bought a used car that was only 2 years old, I rented a home - a house, not an apartment, And I bought a couple grand worth of tools and started my own business. I'm now run a handyman service. I'm semi-successful, but not where I want to be. I'm a lot better than I was 3 years ago, but not where I was 10 years ago - or even 20 years ago... I'm still very lonely and work 12 hours a day 7 days a week. I need a break. I need a vacation. I need something therapeutic and something fun and relaxing for a change. I've been really wanting to get back into metal detecting, so that's what I decided to do with the pennies I've been saving every week. It's taking me 3 years to save up $800.
      I want to try to start my own TH-cam channel. Maybe call it, "Rags to Riches" and use it to spotlight 'beating homelessness and becoming successful". I could show some of the work I've been doing building custom closets and doing emphasis on my metal detecting treasure finds. I might not get a lot of viewers or subscribers and I might not make any money with it, but at least I'll be documenting the last few years of my life to leave something behind from my kids and grandkids to watch in the future...
      Maybe some other homeless people might find it and give them strength and hope with my experiences.
      I'm rambling and you're probably rolling your eyes! Lol My apologies to you sir!
      From your message above, I just locked in on The Legend. I've been banging my head on a wall between the legend and trying to save up a few hundred dollars more to get the Equinox 900, but all of the reviews I've read... And like you said with your wisdom...
      But in other words....
      The differences in quality = grains of sand. Each grain of sand is $100. You can get a few millimeters deeper with one grain of sand, $100 please! You can get just a few more millimeters deeper for 1 more grain of sand, $100 please. You can get better sound separation on multiple targets for two grains of sand, $200 please. The next thing you know.... you just spent $800 on 8 grains of sand. You look at the 8 grains of sand on the kitchen table, think about the $800 you spent and wonder if you made a good purchase...
      I get it.
      The Legend it is!!!...
      Thanks Loren!
      I'm going to go ahead and subscribe now and put on all notifications - because of my man of my word! Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedule to appease my questions and I hope you have a great rest of your day and a safe, healthy and happy life!
      Edit: All the above probably sounds like a made-up story. I just reread my small book, and I started thinking... This guy's not going to believe this crap! But it's all true and can be proven with documents, photos, articles, videos etc. Two of them can be searched now. Actually three...
      You can do a Google search for a "Missing person Eldon Ladner in New Orleans", From when the retirement home was trying to find me to tell me my mother was sick and they couldn't find me anywhere.
      You can do a TH-cam search for "removing a 9 mm hollow point from myself"
      And you can also do a Google search for "New Orleans man shot on March 10th 2017". It happened in the 17th Ward on the corner of hickory and Hamilton near Monticello. Anyway, I have all that documented. I even have the mugshot of the guy that shot me, pictures of the gunshot wounds, pictures of the surgery, obituaries from my mom and wife. Everything can be proven... I just reread it and it sounded like a bunch of BS to me so I said let me try to confirm this before he thinks I'm a delusional nutcase! LOL
      Thanks Loren!!! Now go back to your staying safe, healthy and happy and have a great life!!!

    Loren,
    Another excellent video. I agree with you that all of the top detectors will find most of the same stuff. However, there are some differences. User interface for one. I personally find the Deus II menus confusing and The Legend, due to its large number of updates, has a lot of shortcuts buried in their menu structure. The Equinox/Manticore user interfaces are super easy to use.
    I'm also curious as to your thoughts on certain detectors being better at locating specific targets. For example, and I have seen this time and time again, the Deus II seems to see nickels better than the other detectors. My buddies who have swung Equinoxes for years have been astonished how many nickels they are finding in areas that they have previously hunted. It would be cool if you could take a look at that.

      I agree with the interfaces, the Manticore has the best interface in my opinion. As far as the Deus II hitting nickels more often, I couldn't really confirm such a thing here in Finland, but if there is merit to the claim, it's likely that the Deus II's fundamental frequency simply excite nickels better than the prior machines used :) Somebody did send me some nickels to do some testing with, I will see if I can notice anything. So the CTX-3030 didn't make your list? 🤔 Better is a pretty neat word but if we all go into a site that has never had a detector swing over it and you give everyone 1 hour to detect. The CTX-3030 is going to dig far less trash and quickly cherry pick a site, at the end of that hour the skilled CTX operator is going to have more quality targets and will have dug less trash. Granted the CTX might miss a very small percentage of targets co-located in Iron over a "faster" machine. As you may know I own and use every popular machine made in the last 20 years. Find it odd that you and many others discount the CTX in your best of videos. I have done a similar video or two but have been careful to make sure the video was a head to head comparison discussion, have not done a shootout of the entire group of the current elite offerings. I know you didn't actually make a declaration here and I completely agree within the scientific approach. I think what it comes down to from a psychology perspective is majority of the prospectful buyers are asking us content creators for our opinions as they do not already own all the current offerings, don't want to take the time to read owners manuals on machines they don't already own, may not even have the spare time to invest in research, therefore they trust in a content creator or two and look for opinions whereas the content creators become influencers. I used the word majority and I do believe it's a significant majority. The level of understanding that you have of this technology puts you in the very top percentile of this group. I like your warning here but it since you never told them which machine, many will just go find another video to hear what they want to hear. Lastly, I wouldn't consider the CTX-3030 "old technology" just yet as out of all of my machines it's still the machine I will grab this morning as I head out the door to a new site we have never detected before. My "bias" comes from conditioning over the years as all of the experiences I have had with all of my machines. Another big factor for me is the reputation of the manufacturer as well in regards to build quality, repairs, updates and pricing. Always look forward to your videos and words of wisdom but I have yet to see the CTX-3030 mentioned in any of the best of videos and feel I should at least make a comment. Cheers, Mark

    • @LorenLemcke

      I actually would add the CTX-3030 to my list, the only issue is that I have never used one so I couldn't really in good conscious recommend something that I haven't at least had a chance to play around with. I guess another hesitation with recommending the CTX-3030 is that Minelab is supposed to releases a new iteration of it pretty soon, and I would personally recommend holding out for the new one :) I really do wish I had a CTX-3030 and the possibility of a new iteration right around the corner has been the only thing stopping me from getting one.

    • @williampaxton871
      @williampaxton871 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Mark,
      Your reply is interesting in that it validates the concept of "user expertise." You obviously know the CTX 3030 very well. I have no doubt that in your one hour test you would do very well. But that all depends on who you are going against. The CTX, like the Etrac it was based on, was a beast in its day and you can still do well with it. Shoot, I can take my Explorer II and give you a run for your money because I know that detector inside and out. But if you want to go head to head with a skilled Equinox or Deus II user you are going to get smoked, as will I. When the Equinox came out I did a similar test with my Etrac and the simple fact is that the Equinox will see targets that the CTX/Etrac will not.especially in high trash. So while I agree with you that a CTX will still find good stuff, I really don't see the point in suggesting to Loren to include it in his list. If he does that, then he will have to open it up to every guy who knows an older detector well.
      Just my two cents worth, no criticism intended, just a different point of view.

      @@LorenLemcke This is a valid point but it's still currently for sale and their flagship VLF machine, albeit . . . getting old. 😜 It definitely belongs in all talks of best of even for 2023. I am aware of the new project they are calling "The Ultimate" which will replace the CTX-3030 likely within 12 months but even then it's still a very capable machine that has to at least be fairly compared to a $500 Nokta Legend! Your video here was very good advice to those who are here looking for recommendations. 🤠

      @@williampaxton871 Hi Bill, yes I was trying to understand how the flagship multi-freq machine from Minelab which is still being sold (with the warranty) could not even be considered in the talks when the $500 Nokta Legend is considered. The CTX is showing it's age a bit but still absolutely one of the better machines on the market. My statement about the 1 hour hunt was very carefully worded to indicate a short window in time as the CTX would cherry pick a site quickly where very little trash would be dug but as soon as the cherry pick was over it would get beat hands down by the better target separation of the more modern machines you mentioned. In my example it would be best to go against myself as I have countless hours on the Equinox 800 and the Deus II as well. I know all of the machines well and simply because of "my" experience(s) the CTX would be "my" machine of choice in that short 1 hour hunt. In a site with limited or no iron trash I would again give the CTX enough respect and consideration that it should be a candidate for a "best of" talk. Your last sentence is exactly what I mean . . . Yes it is an "older detector" now but it's still the flagship machine for one of the top manufacturers in the industry. Doesn't deserve to be in the same discussion as the Explorer or Etrac as the CTX-3030 is still being sold and marketed! Someday soon we can put it to pasture as it's successor is well in the works. Btw everyone who knows me and has detected with me (or has watched my videos for the past 12 years) would know that I also had many countless hours on my beloved Explorer II and the Etrac. So again, because of my own personal experience(s) with all of those machines, I simply stating that any list of best in class (today - Feb 2023) should have the CTX-3030 in the discussion. Kind of beating a dead horse here. But I do appreciate your comment, in this case we will have to agree to disagree as you have said you "really don't see the point", whereas I do. Nothing wrong with that! Loren has always been very pragmatic in his videos and I thought it inviting to make my comment to him. With others, I may not of even wasted my time. No criticism taken and always enjoy others point of views!! 🤠

      @@BrassMedic The Flagship CTX 3030 is not nearly as versatile as far as its ability to be used by people of all sizes, detect a wider variety of target sizes, a wider variety of target conductivity and most of all a wider variety of ground conditions as the Manticore, Equinox, Deus 2 and Legend. Hopefully the next version of the CTX will be a much better detector for high iron mineralization, small low conductors and especially more lightweight.

    Trending now is the most factual reality: What is the measurable difference between the leading detectors on the market today? 1.) Nokta Legend. It will do everything all the other VLF detectors will do! The measurable difference is approximately ($1,000) one thousand dollars! 2.) Costly. 3.) Extremely costly! lol R O F L This is a parody Ergo, this will cause one to recall an age-old adage: A fool and his money will soon separate! lol R O F L On the good side: One is able to maintain bragging rights! I paid (3) three times more for my metal detector than you did! lol R O F L
