I've read that people who accidentally breed brown plecos get in trouble because it's hard to find fish stores that want them, since they're too common, but a more unusual colour like red might be easier? I'd check with a store if they're interested in buying.

In a community tank he gets what everyone gets - a healthy mix including algae wafers.
