    That's wonderful! The hens get to roam free and enjoy the sun. I give full support to organic egg farmers and I don't mind paying a little bit more for the eggs.

      MZhris They call it free ranged once the chickens can move around. They still can be kept in cramped conditions where it sometimes can be of worse conditions than caged farming. Sainsbury's and Waitrose use this as an tactic to deceive people into thinking that the conditions the chickens are kept in are similar to these.

Cuz she did get one to eat at the end :) :) Never could figure out how she digested shell and all.

    In the United States this is actually not considered free range. It is called pasture raised. Free range gives hens far less space inside an outdoor enclosure connected to a hen house. Egg producers commonly use the term "free range" deceptively to make people think it's pasture raised.

    Nice video. Would like to have seen how the inside of the caravan is set up for roosting. How did the eggs make their way from nesting pots to the treadmill, in other words. Is inside designed so the belt is under the nests? Someone inside picking eggs and putting them onto the belt? Looks like a really nice and sustainable operation, as well as makes for really healthier chickens and eggs. Reminds me of my youth growing up on mini-farm, and being responsible for chicken house. They had about 10 acres to wander around on freely, along with the goats and an occasional pig.

      I think they raise the dog up with the chickens. One of the best breeds are Great Pyrenees, they protect the chickens and even sometimes think they are a chicken. They are very common for free range chicken properties, and will save you a fortune in you live stock (Chickens). Good luck with your quest for a free range chicken farmer. Also where do you think you will set up? Great places to set up are near industrial areas, or areas that are just out of the city. This is because they are close to a large population that you can supply your eggs/chicken too. Transportation is quick, easy and cheap. Also land in those areas are cheap, also setting up on a rail way line can help for transportation of Feed.

    • @ashmacc7868
      @ashmacc7868 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      sajid SIDDIQUI You don't want to keep broilers and layers together because depending on your source for the broilers, they usually carry diseases that your layers don't need exposed to. Broilers are also bred to be biologically different than layers in that they have much shorter life expectancy.
      They are bred to mature extremely quickly, to the point where if allowed to live too long, they will develop leg and heart problems problems because they cannot support their own body's rapid growth over an extended period of time. You will need to slaughter these every so many weeks, while your layers will be productive for up to 3-4 years.
      If you are careful, and maintain healthy "breeders" that will supply the chicks to make up your broiler stock, that'd be great. But it's not easy for a newcomer and they have to be kept on a restricted diet to keep them alive to breeding age.
      The egg laying in your layers may slow after 2 years- not always. It will be rather easy for you to maintain your own layer stock given their life expectancy is much higher.
      Providing greens and a healthy diet as well as sanitary conditions are all necessary for healthy meat and eggs no matter what size the operation, and are the most important factors in keeping your poultry disease free. This needs to all be taken into account when you are making your housing plans for these birds. Good luck :)

    • @gregdubya1993

      sajid SIDDIQUI meat birds and laying birds will have different feed needs also. You will need to keep them segregated to feed them properly.

      I saw a dog there. That's good enough. But I'm not so sure about the aerial predators. As long as the nasty raccoon is away he'll be fine. Raccoon kills (all of the birds at once) for pleasure, while the rest just takes one and leave.

      Harry Everett I actually respect those predators as they only kill and take what they need. Raccoons are mass murderers.
