I always thought the reason he doesnt have a voice was to make the player feel more like they were the character in the game.

Claude's silence has two advantages. First, you can assign any personality you want to him. The lack of a voice enables him to become you, and you can justify making him behave however you wish. I never went on killing sprees with Tommy or CJ because I felt like it was out of character for them.
Second, it makes Claude more dangerous. Few things are scarier than a quiet yes-man who will perform whatever viscous, cold-blooded task he is assigned. No moral objections to anything, just a nod or a bow.

Yep, he does indeed. As someone who's played the game since it came out, I can confirm he does make grunts when he gets hurt.
Back in the days when water meant automatically dying lmao. I was shocked when I ended up wrecking into the ocean on GTA: San Andreas, I'm still in the car like "Why isn't he dead yet?" I open the door he starts swimming out I was like "OOOOOOH!!!"

Well actually, if Claude drowns, falls, dies, gets punched or gets shot, you can actually hear grunting noises from him. Tommy did have the same exact thing in VC too but it's like they left in the pain grunting noises but took out what it'd be like for him to talk with real English, not in cutscenes but in game talking to either pedestrians or cops. But the later protagonists had screams while on fire and Claude doesn't have that. But anyways, those grunting noises are the closest thing we'll get to him talking

When gta 3 came out I was in 4th grade. I literally didn't care that Claude not speaking. Guess I got caught up playing the game and enjoying it.
but i guess also back then we didnt even think of the protagonist even talking till later GTA games came out. looking back at it now seems kinda weird since we are pretty much used to the protagonist talking
I was too caught up in the weird stuff that the NPCs were saying to care about Claude talking.

when they said he was mute so the audience could identify with him, they didnt mean like "oh thats the guy with no voice" they meant so that you see yourself in the main character more than you would if he was 100% his own person. like some 15 year old nerd might have trouble identifying with tommy and his stern and aggressive ways but could always identify with claude because he's neutral.
or simply they just couldn't find a voice actor for them so they just made him not talk case closed

I really like that Claude is a mute. Gives him a Michael Myers feel.
Some of the songs in GTA 3 may explain why Claude doesn't talk. Like the one that says "Guess I didn't make the cut, guess I should keep it shut." I'm pretty sure there are more songs as well torment Claude for following Catalina's plan and being tricked. Claude may have used to talk before GTA 3 and GTA San Andreas.

Claude Speed and Catalina meet in 1992 in GTA: SA. Catalina says she and Claude are heading to Liberty City. The events of GTA III take place in 2001. Claude was mute prior, so Catalina could not have caused his ability to not speak.
Fun fact: GTA III is the only GTA game prior to GTA IV to take place in the year of its release. GTA IV, GTA: Chinatown Wars and GTA V all take place respectively in the years of their release.

I love the fact that Claude doesn't talk at all that's what I like about him, a straight savage he don't need words he just gets the job done
It's actually a common device in writing and game design. They do it so you the player fill in the blanks when he doesn't talk. And therefore you feel more directly involved with his actions and ''Claude'' takes a passive role.
For example Squall barely said much in FF8 but the games encouraged you to take options during dialogue and events.
Dark Cloud Toan never says a word. Same for Levant in Jade Cocoon.
If Claude had a voice it would be like watching a movie. But since he does not have one everyone can fill in with whatever empathy or joke they want at the time.

I like to think that Claude is just a naturally quiet dude that actually did get shot in the throat and can't talk anymore. And through his mind runs turmoil as he goes through his quest resenting that he didn't take advantage of his voice while he had it.
I actually enjoyed some of the weird stuff that the NPC's said that I didn't care that Claude was silent.
Specifically, the guy that runs around shouting "My mother is my sister."

Claude getting shot in the throat as a reason is unlikely. GTA San Andreas takes place before GTA III. In GTA San Andreas, Claud doesn't talk aswell.

Claude probably is deaf when he was born or he is just a strong silent type that he doesn't speak too much. Maybe he is just silent.
According to the voice actors, Claude has a voice but only some grunt sounds that he has.
I always thought they did that on purpose. For Claude to not have a voice. GTA references a lot of different movies like Scarface, Point Break, and Godfather. I figured Claude not having a voice was Rock Stars way of making the protagonist a strong silent type. Like Clint Eastwood "The Man With No Name" or Ryan Gosling from Drive (who's name is never mentioned)

Very cool stuff I always felt the reason why Claude did not talk was because he was shot early in the intro of GTA 3 but thanks for making this video Zac it does clear it up for a lot of people out there who may have been confused about this Theory and it is a very possible Theory it makes sense to me cuz back when GTA 3 was being created things were different as far as creating video games goes so yes it does make a lot of sense they had no intention of having a voice on Claude in the first place cool videos Zac👍👊

I think the reason is more meta. I remember around the early 2000's, the sentiment among gaming journalism is the silent protagonist thing was old. Programmers wouldn't give the main character any dialogue because they thought it'd be easier for the player to project their own personalities onto them, but numerous "Lame Video Game Tropes" lists consistently called this out as lazy writing, right after GTA3, and just before we got treated to Tommy Vercetti.
I agree with the 'shot in the throat' theory. When I was a little kid, ( 7 or 8, when I probably shouldn't have been playing it in the first place) me and my friends thought that was why he didn't talk. We also thought his name was Fido, on account of Maria calling him that, this was before his true name was revealed, of course.

Yep, it makes sense, as back in 2001 Rockstar created a framework for open world games with storyline that has never been done before and, as every thing that is created for the first time, it had a lot of issues that had to be fixed, and they were running out of time. Therefore they focused on the most important other stuff that makes the game enjoyable and ditched the speaking protagonist feature for the time being. In 2002 they had the framework already designed from the 2001's game, so they could afford focusing on the speaking protagonist feature, which then was added to the framework.
Since then the framework for the GTA games just kept being improved (with enterable buildings, for example).

About 2 years ago, I researched the same question. If I remember correctly, Rockstar said that it was to create a relatable character for people who couldn't speak and raise awareness of the condition. Now weather that was true or someone posing as Rockstar, I don't know... However I found it interesting none the less.

Claude Speed doesn't talk because his tongue was removed. CJ mentioned angrily in a garage cutscene "That snake without a tongue!" before Claude was shot in the face in GTA 3. That's my theory! Simple as that! 😊
