You cant even imagine how this is helping. As someone else said, I would have never though about putting a texture into the bevel radius. Works absolutely flaswless, thanks a ton !!
Using the bevel node is a really good idea. Pointiness in Geometry is very dependent on subdivision levels and doesn’t really work on multiple models with different subd levels.
i never EVER thought of plugging a map into the radius, this is genius, thank you very much, you gained a follower and a like and a comment for the algorythm, thank you so much for helping me, i hope it will help you too !
Thanks man! I've been struggling with this for a while and as a newish person to blender you made it so much easier to understand than other videos I've seen
Been going through a bunch of edge wear tutorials, this one produces the best look with the texture map and very few nodes needed. The Bevel Node is far superior to any of the AO versions. Layering Shaders with Edge Wear masking produces some great results. Hopefully a layer node is added in the future to make the layering of shaders and textures easier.
hey this doesnt seem to work at all. cant tell if im doing something differently or if its just broken on 4.0 i have the normal of the geometry node and normal on the bevel node into a vector math node set to dot product which goes into a principled BSDF node connected to the material output. im on cycles and in rendered mode and there are no black edges. any idea why?
Thank you very much for the tutorial, when I bake I can see the result, but I can't see it in eevee, what should I activate to see the result in real time?
I ccompleted the whole tutorial in evee then changed to cycles it did not work / convert do I have to start from the beginning? do over the tutorial with evee from the start?
Doesn't work for me. :( The texture appears across the entire object, not the edges, doesn't matter what parameters I change, they have no effect. I've been using Blender for 7 years... not ONCE have I found a tutorial that works like shown, I'm so tired of this. 😪
Very helpful! I noticed this technique only works on organic characters if I use "True Normal" I was wondering why it wasn't working till I used that one
This is awesome! The thing I want to try to understand: How do you even realize to plug a map into the radius? I've always been trying to make my own shaders to various levels of success, and it always feels like I go at it completely randomly. Do you have any tutorials or know any good videos about a thought process or method of coming up with shaders like this?
Thanks for an amazing idea for edge wear 👌 one question... how do I use my imagine texture for the colour of my object with this effect without it just being completely black like yours? 🤔 thanks 🙏

Everybody, remember to be in CYCLES and in RENDERED mode. Otherwise it will not work. Thanks for a great tutorial!!
I was going mad with this, I wasnt understand that. Thanks broski
TUSEN TAKK !!!
i wonder why?
@@azmihakam Something about the way shaders work in Cycles vs Evee.
How can I replicate this without being in render mode?

He didn't invent this node chain.
Thanks. Unfortunately in version 4 it doesn't work. Maybe it's just me, but they obviously changed something.
Nah it isnt working for me either.
same here. not working
Yep, not working

No problem, I'm planning on releasing a bunch of new tutorials soon!
@@diivja For some reason it doesn't work in Blender version 3.4 What should I do?
@@Sizotop It only works in Cycles render mode. It doesn't work in Material Preview or Eevee
@@diivjawhat version did you do it in? 3.4 seems to not have the mix rgb
Nvm I got it working in 3.0
This is exactly what I've just spent hours looking for - THANK YOU so much !!!
for some reason it doesnt work for me, is always white and never changes, what should i do ?
Thanks man! I've been struggling with this for a while and as a newish person to blender you made it so much easier to understand than other videos I've seen
your voice is so calming... thanks! this helped out a ton
Thank you so much!
U aren't worthless btw

This Tutorial is very useful and I am glad I found it. Good job 3Daleks!

this tutorial is much simpler than the others i have watched
Whoever you are sir, I love you!
I love you too
Best out of the all the edge wear tutorials
can someone tell, what hotkey did he use at 0:53?
exact what we need, thanks sir, amazing tutorial. imagine using another cool scratched texture, wow ! thumps up sir !
for some reason the divide node is not doing anything for me. using blender 3
This video is great: short, to the point, and filled with information. Thank you.
On Blender 4.2.2 and all I'm seeing is black. I don't get any edge coloration when using Dot Product.
Thank you very much for the tutorial, when I bake I can see the result, but I can't see it in eevee, what should I activate to see the result in real time?
for more complicated than cube object UV required?
An amazing tutorial! This was exactly what I was looking for! Thank you so much!
does this work on 36 sided cylinders? cause when i tried it nothing is happening but it works fine on my sword
how to make this work in eevee?
I want to do what the "distance to edge - voronoi" does, but with the edges of the object, not by creating them.
I don't have a bevel node for some reason
helped me alot, now i just need to know how to do such a nice looking edge wear texture just with nodes ;)
Okay, but how can i export these scratches onto a PNG?
is it possible to do this with eevee rendering engine? following this exact setup, it seems to only work on Cycles...
The only way you could get this in Eevee would be to bake the texture in Cycles and then apply it as an image
i just spent 3 hours doing this manually in armorpaint 😭
Those 3 hours won't ever come back, that's 180 less fucks in your life.
😭😭😭😭😭
How about 3 minutes in substance painter
Armor Paint is a stub - it ain't going anywhere. The only hope is that Blender will eventually have a normal layer texture painting system
@@MelvilleGi hope it will come true soon
Please support this valuable channel, the training was very useful, thank you to the teacher of this training
I want to use this to mix shaders. have not been successful, yet
idk why but doing this just crashes my blender, not cause of my pc , but for some reason i cant understand
can you PLEASE say what yu did with the Node Wrangler? What are the 3 hidden nodes you added between bevel and material output?!
can u show how can we bake it for eevee
I already have that tutorial on my channel!
I ccompleted the whole tutorial in evee then changed to cycles it did not work / convert do I have to start from the beginning? do over the tutorial with evee from the start?

i will cry why my cube is full white. im viewing material mode from toop right.
It does not seem to work with a displacement map though, how can I use this for PBR materials? Thanks!
I'm not sure, I'll research it later
Mind blowing! Thank you so much!
what are you pressing for the node wrangler thing. How am I supposed to know
Ctrl + T, you must have node wrangler enable in the settings
yeah a short mention about the shortcut would be appreciated lol
Well, this one is going into my favourites!
Very helpful! I noticed this technique only works on organic characters if I use "True Normal" I was wondering why it wasn't working till I used that one
Thanks for the tip, I didn't know that as well
i cant find dot product
could it be this only works in cycles ?
how can i export this as an obj file while it looks like that?
Amazing tutorial by is simplicity yet incredible result Ty man
Noice - was Wrecking my head for Weeks now xD trying to accomplish this.
I did what was shown in the video and I just get a cube which is black nothing on the edges. No idea what I am doing wrong.
You need to be in cycles render mode
where i can find the preview node
thank you I was looking for this
Hi.. Can i add my original diffuse texture on this configuration?
Yes, exchange it for the image texture
In next tutorial you may plz show the shader editor window maximized and all nodes in view (home key) and and without shrinking to icon !!
Very useful tutorial! Thx!
this is awsome man, thank you very very much
Holy crap! Your viewport handles 1024 samples in the time it takes mine to do 25.
Make sure to use GPU compute, if you are not already, CPU compute is typically much slower.
@@danielmichaud2867
Indeed. I was a few weeks in before figuring this out in the render tab and GPU settings in preferences.
first i jumped in and subtracted two bevel lol. this is niceeeeeeeeeee
simple and effective ! thank you !
This worked amazing thank you so much bro!
There's nothing happen after I plag the bevel and geo node into dot product, everything just blank, how come?
Maybe you are in Eevee or Material Preview, it only works in Cycles
@@diivja Yeah, I already tried out! Thanks!
@@capricalee If you want to use this in Eevee you can bake the texture to an image and use it that way
@@diivja I used to in Material Preview mode to get the faster result, and I missed out “the method only work in cycle”,sorry for being careless!
thank you, this helped a ton!
great i lost in the pre view node dunno whats the shortcut👍👍
You should leave the whole node diagram up at the end so we can see and make better sense of it. Thanks for the tutorial, though.
Thanks for the suggestion!
I wish every node how to vide would have a screen shot of the whole set up at end or to download. Its hard for to see on my phone lol
what do you press??????????
Real good man. Thanks.
Great tutorial! Is there a way I can get this effect on only the top edges of vertical faces? That would be great!
Maybe you could play around with Math nodes (greater than) but I would have to try it myself first. Sorry for the late reply..
very useful, thank you so much !
Nice! Thanks for sharing!
is this in cycles?
I was lost at preview. ctrl + shift+ click
Thank you this helped me a lot!!
thank you very much, works great!
What the hell is that "viewer" node? I cannot find it
CTRL+SHIFT+Left click any node to preview it (Blender adds the temporary viewer node)
Is it work on 3.4.1?
To ALL the virtuous Blender Tutorial makers: SHOW THE GODDAMN TERMINAL NODE.
I have no idea what you plugged the whole thingamabob in.
Very nice!
dont know why but this just not work at all. Set up a brand new scene and all and repeated the steps perfectly but with no results
Same here
One thing I can think off is that you are not in cycles because it doesn't work otherwise.
thanks man, it helped alot 😀
Which key do you press to pull up the viewer node?
CRTL and Shift while clicking on the dot product node, which connects it to the surface node in the material output,
s. Thank you In The setup❤️
good tut
Thank you
It doesn't work anymore for some reason, or maybe I am doing somethign wrong
I have Blender 3.5 and have the same problem. It may be cause of the change on the mixer.
Ty bro. Really the fastest install what i see.
Thanks a lot man!

Plug the texture into image 2 on the mix rgb node, if that doesn’t work try other nodes or setups.
amazing
Thank you so much
thank you very much for the video💯💯💯
Great!
This needs an update...it doesn't work anymore for 2024.
Work on 3.4.1
It doesnt work very well if you have some bevel.
This doesn't work much if the model is already Beveled
Thank you for this tutorial This has solved a big problem of mine learning, can you make a tutorial on procedural ao shader please
Thanks
